"Reference only": 'The Librarian' and Archives in the world of 'Hilda' [Part 3]
Continued from part 2
Tumblr media
Alfur’s help is needed to read the tiny print.
The next scene in the library, in the same episode, shows her invisible labor has manifested. Before that, there are some great lines, one by Hilda who declares haughtily that her enchantment isn't dangerous because is from a "library book for goodness sake." Seriously, Hilda, you think all the books in the library are good? Because it sounds like that is what she is saying. Yikes. Anyway, I loved how Alfie of the overly-bureaucratic elves, which reminds me a lot of the Vogans in The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, criticized Hilda for not reading the footnotes, adding "Never, ever, ignore a footnote." When they enter the library, Frida expresses her surprise that the special collections room existed, making it clear it really is hidden, while Alfie declares that "Libraries are thrilling temples of the unexpected." It is then it is shown that the book has been re-shelved and the librarian is nowhere in sight. If that isn't invisible labor, I don't know what is. I also loved this discussion of footnotes as a person who loves adding as many sources as possible and research, sometimes too much:
Frida: “Ok, let’s find out what it says in the footnote.” [She finds the footnote, Frida gasps, adding:] “It’s a whole page of info!” Hilda: “It's probably a lot of blah, blah, blah, right? Who would print anything important in a footnote?” [Alfie is aghast, says:] “Whoever wrote this book, that’s who!”
Reprinted from my Wading Through the Cultural Stacks WordPress blog. Originally published on Sept. 23, 2020.
Later in the episode, as they continue to read through the book, there are even more hilarious lines:
Hilda: “Is there another footnote?” Alfie: “No, but [looks at page:] there is an asterisk!” [Frida turns to appendix 1; After Frida says how small the print is, Alfie pulls out his glasses, saying] Alfie: “It’s a masterpiece of confusing clauses, for sure.” [Hilda realizes that she is a witch by enchanting her friends and Alfie continues reading the fine print:] “There’s a footnote to the asterisk of the footnote!”
After Alfie continues reading, they produce a plan to lift the enchantment and save her friends.
Then there is the episode "The Ghost." Hilda, David, and Frida travel to the Trolberg library to get information on ghosts. The librarian helps them, with some reticence, and continues a macabre conversation. [2] After she recites the location of the ghost, from memory, which is amazing, she decides to double-check herself, scoffing at Hilda's remark she "memorized every grave." In order to do so, she grabs climbs a ladder, then grabs a book of Trolberg city records, and ends up reciting the same thing she had said earlier! After that, she gives Hilda the right materials so she can raise the dead, which she happens to have on her. This raises the strong possibility she is a witch and/or has magical powers. The use of the city records is the only archivy element of the episode, while her ability to serve her patrons is a quality archivists often share as well. As the SAA points out, archivists should "expand access and usage opportunities for users, and potential users, of archival records," while serving various stakeholders and constituencies.
Sadly, the librarian doesn't have a role in any other episodes and neither does this special collections room. However, we do see the librarian walking across the streets of Trolberg in the show’s last episode, "The Black Hound," and according to her voice actor, and other previews, she is entering (and within) a cave in the show’s upcoming season for an unspecified reason. This lends credibility to the theory she is a witch who is teaching Hilda how to use magic/be a witch, who has some goth vibes. I think it's less likely she is a vampire, like Marcy or Hilda from the future, but sure, we can say she gives off "gay vibes." [3] I personally think the latter is a little presumptive only because her screen time has been very limited, and she is a very mysterious character at the present. In any case, I remain excited about the upcoming season this fall and hope she gets a bigger role than she has in the current season. As always, I look forward to your comments.

[2] This includes lines like "...the good thing about loved ones is they eventually die too. Then, everybody’s together again. That’s why the hardest thing about dying is leaving all your stuff behind.” It makes me think of death positivity and the resident death positive genealogist I know, Becks Kobel, who runs a blog known as The Hipster Historian.
[3] I mean, two animated characters I can think of who have multicolored hair are either bisexual (Glimmer in She-Ra) or lesbian (Amity in The Owl House).

Welcome!
Recently, the wonderful (and dedicated) Becks Kobel from Washington State, a death positive genealogist (and historian), asked Italian genealogists to name their surnames, noting that she was working "on an Italian line." Many people, whether family historians like Chris Russo, Josh, Wendy L. Callahan, Renee Pizzo, Ina Neugebauer, Zoe Krainik, Ashley Senske, and Chris Ferraiolo, professional genealogists like Derk Doran Wood, and other individuals (Olivia Meikile, "Ms Redacted," and Florian Straub) shared their surnames. But, for me, the idea to create this blog was born, along with the sharing of various resources on immigration in the 20th century (see here, here, and here), writing that "I've been thinking abt a new genealogy blog that focuses on my dad's side of the family, including one on my Italian ancestors." This is that blog! I've already briefly mentioned this before on Twitter, noting how "my great-grandfather worked on the S.S. Grand View Point Hotel (otherwise known as the Ship Hotel) with an Emilio Rosso," adding that "it's so important there us [sic] even a Wikipedia page on it (which I made extensive edits too, of course)." I've also tweeted a photograph of my ancestor, Annetta Rose "Nita" (or "Anita") Baccarini, who was born December 20, 1909 in Kiskiminetas Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, and went to college. However, her life was short-lived as she died on August 31, 1932 in Avonmore, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, of pneumonia, after she had graduated, at the age of 22! Here's the photograph:

I then shared a photo of my grandmother, Lena Adelaide (Franci) Hermann (1922-2005), who was 100% Italian, considered "second-generation" (I'll talk about that in a later post) and sent the following photo to my grandfather when he was building bridges in the Republic of Korea (ROK) in 1946-7:

And with that, the blog is off!

Tamberlane and the thorny issue of adoption in roots work
Tumblr media
Clearly, there are different types of roots, beyond what the teacher in these panels from Tamberlane is telling her. This is NOT what you tell someone about their roots. Teacher, you are doing this all wrong!
Reprinted from my Genealogy in Popular Culture WordPress blog. Originally published on March 8, 2021.
One of my favorite ongoing webcomics, Tamberlane, hits you right in the face with an issue which often faces genealogists: adoption. Tamberlane, the story's protagonist is told by her teacher, Ms. Callie. that they will be learning about "their roots." [1] This worries her, as she first thinks that it means she literally has roots growing out of her, and later when she learns that roots make you for "who you are." She is concerned because she's from the far-off place known as "Abroad" but her friends comfort her, reminding her that her roots are in Treehollow with the rest of them because she lives there. Cur later challenges Ms. Callie, asking about students who don't know their roots and starts making a scene. Later, the teacher is flustered and doesn't know how to answer questions about "Abroad," with Jentzen kicked out of the classroom as a result, just because he asked a question! This becomes a plot point later in the series, as Cur blames Tamberlane for Jentzen getting fired, even though it isn't Tamberlane's fault, leading Piper to get in a fight with Cur. [2] As it turns out, not even Tamberlane's guardian, Belfry, can adequately explain "Abroad" to her. [3]
Ms. Callie was wrong about roots. As Becks Kobel, a death positive genealogist [4] wrote in October 2017, "we are placed within families, whether biologically or through adoption, that have a long history with all sorts of experiences." Roots are not only based in your blood, but are wider ranging than that, including your chosen family, those you surround yourselves with, and your circumstances. They can be your roots. There are even some Italian surnames, like Esposito, which were given to children in Italy who were given up by their parents or were adopted! At the same time, a surname may be assumed because of an "unofficial adoption, taking on a stepfather’s surname and so on" as was the case with one of my ancestors, Robert B. Mills II (originally Robert Barnabas Packard). Some genealogists even warn about not being "lured into sympathy research via an adoption story" while others note that DNA tests can be helpful for those with ancestors who were adopted or those looking for their birth parents. Sure, you could say that the "standard" family tree wasn't made for adoption, but that doesn't mean it is invalid, as adoptees can be heirs to estate from time to time. Some stick with the so-called standard tree, as "Geni cannot record adoptions" but that doesn't mean that records of it doesn't exist. [5] Russian genealogist Vera Miller talked about this:
Many adoptees become curious about their birth families and hopeful their questions about their separations from their families will be answered. The challenges of some adoptees from the Russian-speaking world is facing that their Russian language skills disappeared or were never developed. Thanks to the Internet, these adoptees can find their families with just as much success as adoptees from the English-speaking world.
That brings me back to Tamberlane. She was, at the beginning of the comic, found in the woods by the citizens of Treehollow and while she isn't always good with communicating verbally, she knows a bit of pidgin Trissol (Silver Sage Sign Language). She calls herself "Tamberlane" when meeting Belfry for the first time in Chapter 1, with Belfry wondering where her parents are, and who left her there. As such, the other stuff I said about adoption isn't applicable here, although it is still worth noting. Hopefully, in the future, this is explored more in the webcomic.

[5] In a related note, a Puerto Rican genealogist Teresa Vega, argued that with "Ancestry doing away with <8 cM DNA matches," it would negatively impact Black and indigenous descendants, saying they should "seriously consider that they are preventing family reunification not only due to slavery, but also due to adoption, genocide, famine, etc."

While it is often difficult to find any reference to women in history, looking at female ancestors is important because they are ones that give us new family line lines, which can help "explode myths and challenge stereotypes." That's more reason than any to focus on these ancestors, without a doubt! You can write about Beck Kobel's post, where she spotlights young women who married too young, who were part of polygamous relationships, or tombstones of female ancestors, to give two examples.
A quote from my post in which I examined the patriarchial bias in my genealogy work on the Packards and worked to undue and weaken that bias, so that it weakens.

Find a Grave – It’s About Time.
I know this post is from back in March, but this an effort which everyone should support. Find A Grave should change their name!
originally posted on Aug. 8, 2020, with Becks Kobel's post here.
Find A Grave.
Tumblr media
What a site. It landed on the genealogy scene in 1995 when Salt Lake City resident Jim Timpton built a genealogical database with his hobby of visiting celebrity gravestones. Since then, it has grown into a global database for many of the millions of dead from around the world.Anna N Daniloff — Evergreen-Washelli Memorial Park, Seattle, Washington, USA.
Members and non-members alike can sift through the multitudes of data and find information on their ancestors and view their finals resting places. Due to the interest in genealogy, per the increase in awareness of family history through companies like Ancestry and 23 & Me, more and more people are getting interested in their past and finding their ancestors.
With this increase in popularity, there are some parts of the genealogy world that haven’t moved into the future.
Tumblr media
I’ve always loved Find a Grave, I’ve used it since my earliest days in researching my family as a teen, and have appreciated the community base of genealogists who dedicate their time to photographing not just their families, but thousands of others as well.
But there is one thing that has always bothered me about the site, it’s acronymic name that genealogists commonly use, FAG.
FAG
It may not be quickly apparent to some, but the word fag is one of a turbulent history in the LGBTQIA community. It has been used to harass, threaten, abuse and in many cases murder.
youtube
In the past few years, genealogy and the research into one’s family history have blossomed significantly with companies like Ancestry, 23 and Ancestry putting out genetic genealogy test commercials for the general public to see. With this, we as a community have introduced a great variety of people to our much loved and passionate field.
As we continue to evolve and change into an inclusive community of genealogists and death positive folks that range to your Great-Aunt Mary and your Harley-riding younger brother Zac — we all love this field.
Note: As of today, I received a comment on my blog that said the following
“There is a new RAOGK -Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness that was started and we will not tolerate the use of that acronym. We have a photo of the National archives building The old Please if you could make that distinction in the post, so the new group doesn’t get lambasted. “
The problem is, there are some that are refusing to acknowledge this issue. Earlier this week, noted genetic genealogist Blaine Bettinger asked the Facebook genealogy group RAOGK (Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness) to stop using the term as shorthand. This one post has garnered over 247 comments and 8 shares.
Tumblr media
I even posted something in the group this morning and it was swiftly deleted and within minutes of it being deleted, a member of the group ‘reached out’ (I use this word with several grains of salt) to me with the following:
Tumblr media
This individual then proceeded to tell me that gay people aren’t offended by this acronym (hey, so, I’m gay, and I am) and that “It’s not being used in a derogatory way so I just don’t understand why it’s such an issue,” followed by “I think you’re a wee too sensitive.”
I’m just going to put it out there — that is privilege speaking. The term fag is a loaded term that comes with decades of violence, ignorance, and harassment. But, if I have to drag y’all kicking and screaming into the future — I will. This needs to change now.
Tumblr media
Since we love so much, don’t you think we should take care of it? Include all the members of the community, no matter how different we are? So here is my proposal, let’s call it Find a Memorial (FAM). Why FAM?
#1: It is not an offensive acronym or term and solves that problem hands down
#2: It incorporates family (FAM) into the term, which what this is all about
#3: Memorial is a much more applicable term as by definition, the graveyard has been used specifically for those graveyards near churches or as the definition of it says: “a burial ground, especially one beside a church.”Using the word memorial will incorporate not only graveyards and cemeteries but can also incorporate more non-traditional memorials such as cremations, at sea burials, etc.
If you support me, sign below with your name (i.e. Becky K., 34, Bellingham, WA) below and tweet at @FindAGrave and @Ancestry to make this happen.
We, the undersigned petition Ancestry (the parent company to Find a Grave) to change the name of Find a Grave to Find a Memorial for the following reasons:
The acronym represents our field in a much more appropriate way
The new acronym and name represents all types of departures from this earth, not just graves (cremations, scattered ashes, etc.)
Find a Grave has always been a community-centered database and we all contribute from all the corners of the world. People of every gender, color, background, religion, sexuality, and type. Why not keep everyone together on this journey with a more inclusive name.
