#was just thinking about how much i love the sims #because there's no set in stone canon for it #anything that happens in your game is automatically a canon event #there's obviously certain things like bella/mortimer goth being married and having kids that are part of the game's lore #and usually established from the start #but they could get divorced and marry other people #they could opt to stay best friends when they age up from childhood #or become mortal enemies #you could kill off the entire family and they could haunt goth manor as ghosts #if it's sims 2 you could bring (fake) bella back into the family #you could do literally ANYTHING in your game and it's still canon #no matter what #absolutely mind-blowing #the sims #sims 1 #sims 2 #sims 3 #sims 4 #tragic clowning

howdy :) I'm not really active in the fandom but I enjoy The Hobbit movie, and I'm trying to nail down some lore. Canonically, how much do we know about Thorin and his family's activities during their time in the Blue Mountains?

I would be more than happy to help with that!

Unfortunately, it's not as much as you might have hoped. The years between Smaug's coming to Erebor and the retaking of Erebor are known as the years of exile. In that time, we are told of the deeds of the exiles of Erebor as well as the fates of several members of the line of Durin. During this time, the Battle of Azanulbizar was fought, and Azog was slain by Dain. This had the additional side effect of killing so many orcs that Eriador was nearly completely free of orcs all the way up until Frodo carried the ring. Unfortunately, a LOT of dwarves died as well.

Most of what we do know about Thorin setting his people up in the Blue Mountains can be found at the end of the Return Of The King in Appendix A, in section III: DURIN'S FOLK. The little we do know of that time can be easily accessed in the below. Tolkien Gateway is a very good source of information. Most of it has little to do with Thorin and more with Thrain. The Blue Mountains were the dwarven capital up until Thorin's death. Dain dissolved the capital, moved it to Erebor, and renamed the settlement Thorin's Halls.

obviously Jamie not being in season 4 would suck mostly because I simply want Jamie to be there and to get more of his story and get to enjoy more interactions between Jamie and the other characters. At the end of the day though, I can just not watch s4, which I'm perfectly okay with.

what sucks EVEN MORE to me, and is far harder to avoid, is that not having Jamie in the show totally changes the *canon* of the character in a way that will inevitably bleed over into fan spaces, regardless of whether or not I'm actively watching. However they write him out (I assume it would just be having him go to another team) becomes the new "Jamie Tartt canon." And that small thing totally changes his story and we don't even get to see it play out! When i was perfectly happy playing in my sandbox of a million equally valid possibilities.

#the one thing about s3 that was truly great was that it gave us an ending so successfully ambiguous you could really imagine anything #we could take the story anywhere we wanted to take it!#like. I don't WANT all of my fics to become AUs simply because they needed an easy way to write a character out of the story #and i don't want my fandom space to be constantly clouded by his absence.#does that make sense?#like i really do fear it would make both seasons 1-3 and the fandom space substantially less fun for me #:(#it has little to do with not wanting jamie to ever go to another club even. because i do think that's a realistic option obvs.#it's just that like. in fic there's a million interesting ways to explore that! and it's just one of a whole bunch of possibilities!#he could do a lot at richmond before leaving. he could play elsewhere in the uk or internationally!#his relationships with different characters change in different ways depending on where he goes and what he does #and ultimately each of those playgrounds have different toys!#but on the show his path would be set in stone AND we wouldn't get to play with any of the toys on the playground. you know.#im willing to let go of more jamie tartt content but i don't want no more jamie content PLUS other content that changes his canon. ugh #ted lasso #jamie tartt

i really do worry for the state of media literacy these days

you go into any tag and see people with their whole ass chest saying wrong and untrue shit, and they wholeheartedly believe they’re correct despite the canon source they’re pulling from saying otherwise

#this is specifically about Travis and someone saying he can 'get away with all the murders he committed'#in the ending where he Laura and Ryan find and kill Silas and break the curse #that would mean that canonically Travis has committed NO murders. because he only ever crosses that line when Laura shoots him in chapter 7 #and you cannot break the curse by doing so because Laura and Travis have to work together in order to go after Silas #'going to do everything in his power not to get caught'- tell me you didn't absorb anything other than surface level detail from the game #without telling me. because i can very much tell you didn't get much of anything out of the experience #that man literally gives Laura the power to kill him before going after Silas. he is ready to atone then and there to her #he is repeatedly saying and showing that he hates the cover ups and lying and misery the curse and helping his family is causing #you can not like a character but for fuck's sake - making shit up to make you feel more self righteous about your hate is pathetic looking #and most of the information about Travis is hard fact - it is peppered throughout the game through his dialogue and notes/clues/evidence #vs. Silas who there is almost NOTHING set in stone about. you only know that he's the source of the curse and Eliza kept him caged #even Travis in the end can say he has doubts about whether he was actually Eliza's 'son' or if she didn't just take him and cage him #anyways...i know i'm biased but Travis is the most multi-faceted character in the game and he's the best <3
