Of Butterflies and Backstrokes Part 1
Welcome to my other AU that I couldn't wait until September to show you all. I know, I know the closing ceremonies for the Olympics are tomorrow, which is another reason to get this in before all the fanfare dies.
Summary: When a freak accident at his third Olympics left him with migraines and a fear of deep water, Steve thought his Olympic dreams were dead—until delinquent Eddie Munson arrived at his pool to do community service. Steve witnesses Eddie's swimming talent and realizes his dreams don't have to be over. Now it's a race to get Eddie Olympic ready in two years. Steve's going for gold, but Eddie might have other interests in mind.
~I know I forgot to post the results of the poll regarding which time period to set this story in. But I got the notification on my phone while I was busy and by the time I got to my laptop, I forgot. And kept forgetting.
Most people wanted Eddie's Olympics to be in 2004 but after talking to people in the tags and comments, I decided on 2012 instead. Sorry about that.
~
Steve Harrington grew up with parents who pushed him hard in everything he did. He had to be the best at playing the piano, basketball, baseball, singing, formal dancing, and swimming. But of all those things Steve excelled at swimming the best. Because once he put his cap on over his ears, the roar of the crowd dimmed and then vanished the second he hit the water.
Those other things? Suddenly no longer mattered because Steve wasn’t just good at swimming, he was brilliant. From when he first started competing when he was eleven there was always talk about the Olympics. Always the Olympics.
So it was something he was being pushed toward. World Championships and other competitions were just trials for the Olympics as far his father was concerned.
His father. Clint Harrington, who had never worked hard for anything in his life, who had his job handed to him by his dad, who was a raging, frat boy narcissist who drank his weight in alcohol before he was even twenty-one. Who collected guns but never shot one in his life and didn’t even know how to load one. The man who decided that because his life was soft, his son’s could not be.
When he got fifth at the Olympics at age fourteen everyone was amazed and even a little shocked. Clint Harrington was disappointed. Even though everyone knew that boys his age were still growing and changing and once he had settled into his body, he would do more than just medal, he would take home gold.
Which is exactly what happened his second Olympics. He was eighteen and just coming into his own. He walked away with three silver medals, four gold, and a bronze. The bronze is what upset Clint Harrington the most.
How dare he only take third! The audacity!
Where was his mother in all this? Maureen Harrington was bragging at all her country clubs, charity dos that her son was an Olympic gold medalist. Never mind her friends had never met him. That they saw more of him on their TV then she had since he turned ten. That was when she decided that he was big enough to handle himself and promptly stopped interacting him.
Clint hadn’t even noticed, he was so focused on making sure Steve won at any cost. He hired the best coaches, built a swimming pool in the backyard, drove him to all his meets, all of it; just so Steve could be the best at any cost.
There was only one line Clint didn’t cross, which honestly surprised everyone who knew him. He didn’t suggest Steve dope up. Steve wasn’t sure if it was because he was a coward and was afraid Steve would get caught, or if he just merely thought Steve could be pushed into perfection without them.
But he was always grateful that it was the one line Clint Harrington refused to cross.
And then it happened. It was 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Steve was poised to break several records and win a staggering amount of medals. He was in eight events and everyone was expecting him to medal in every one of them.
But the only things he broke that year, was his head, his hopes, his dreams, and his spirit. For in the very first event the jump board he was on, slipped out from under him as jumped. His head hit the side of the pool and he sunk like a stone to the bottom.
He didn’t remember much, the roar of the crowd turned to screams, the sicking crunch as his head hit the side and then the rush of water all around him as he sunk, weightless to eternity.
When he woke up, all Steve was left with was migraines and a fear of large bodies of water.
His dad walked away that day and he never saw him again.
~
Two Years Later
Eddie Munson was in deep trouble and he knew it. He had been arrested with enough weed on him to know it wasn’t for personal use. Possession with intent to sell. Thank god it happened two weeks before his eighteenth birthday otherwise he’d be facing real jail time and not.. community service?
Wait, what?
He was expecting probation at the very least. But nope. He was sentenced to five hundred hours of community service as it was his first offense, he had a troubled childhood, and apparently the God damned Chief of Police on his side. Who had said that he was a good kid who protected the weak and participated in afterschool programs to help teach them math, creative writing, cooperative skills, troubleshooting, and time management.
Eddie’s lawyer told him before Hopper was to testify at his sentencing hearing that he could not laugh, could not chuckle, could not even so much as snort or smile. When Eddie asked why, he was told he couldn’t be told that or else it would be seen as influencing his testimony. And then Hopper got up on the stand and said that.
D&D. Eddie DM’ed D&D after school. Jesus Christ did it take everything he had not to show any emotion at all.
Five hundred hours was nothing to slouch at. It came out to roughly three months. And he could only work eight hour days. He had barely graduated high school by the skin of his teeth and a fair amount of flattery.
Chief Hopper came to pick him up personally for his first day of community service.
Eddie came barreling out of his trailer only to stop in his tracks when he saw Hopper leaning up against his pickup truck arms folded and ankles crossed.
“Chief,” he said dryly. “To what do I owe this rather dubious pleasure?”
“Get in the truck, boy,” Hop growled. “I’m doing your uncle a favor and making sure you actually show up. And I will be taking you every day. You’ll work five days a week for eight hours a day. You will have three people sign off on your sheet every day. Me, Joyce Byers, and your direct supervisor, Murray Bauman. Every god damn day. Because if you miss one signature, one day and you’ll be thrown in jail. Do. You. Understand?”
Eddie gulped.
He nodded and quietly moved around the truck to get in on the passenger side, head down and shoulders rounded. He didn’t utter a single word the whole trip. He just followed Hopper through the doors and into Joyce’s office.
Sitting behind the desk was a lovely woman with kind eyes, standing beside her was a balding man with beady eyes behind thick glasses. Eddie hadn’t liked the sight of him at all. He just hoped the guy didn’t make his already miserable life even worse.
Joyce broke down all his duties, when he could take breaks and a lunch, and that those would be included in his service hours. He would get access to all the facilities but with the proviso that if a client wanted what he was using, he would have to give it to them.
Whatever that meant.
“Come on,” she finished. “Let me show you around, then Murray will spend all of today training you.”
She stood up and Eddie immediately followed.
“Hopper will sign you in,” Joyce explained, handing a clipboard with his time sheet on it and a pen to the police chief.
He signed it and handed it back to her, she put it on her desk.
“Then Murray and I will sign it when you’re done for the day,” she continued as she moved around the desk. “You are allowed sick days but only five, unless signed off by a doctor.”
Eddie breathed a sigh of relief on that one. He got hay fever something fierce in early September and there were some days that it got so bad he couldn’t see.
All three men followed her out the door. Hopper stopped in front of it.
“This is where I get off,” he said gruffly. “You’ll have to find your own way home as I’ll be at work when you get done.”
Eddie nodded. He shook hands with him and watched as he left.
Joyce smiled at Eddie brightly. “Let’s go.”
She showed him where all the equipment was and that he was charged with wiping it all down once an hour. They continued on and suddenly he heard it.
A sound he had not heard in years.
The sound of kids’ playful screams echoing around the sounds of splashing water. Holy shit, Uncle Wayne, he thought nervously. What did you do for the Chief of Police, hide a body?
Joyce opened the door and led Eddie through the humid air and strong scent of chlorine, pointing out his duties. Which included mopping the floors and grabbing the great big laundry baskets that held the complimentary towels to be taken to washed and also restock them every morning.
Eddie was practically vibrating now. Yeah, sure it was shit grunt work that was meant to be deliberately demeaning, but he got access to the pool. He would be able to swim again and for more than just a couple of times a summer where they would have free swim days when it got too hot.
They got to the end of the tour and Joyce turned around to face him, clapping her hands together.
“So you ready to get to work?”
Eddie sighed. Because yeah that part still sucked. “Ready as I’ll ever be, I guess.”
“That’s the spirit!” she said with a laugh.
~
Steve stepped out of the showers and toweled off the best he could, throwing his white trainer polo on.
Because this pool was in Indianapolis where Olympic trials had been held more than a couple of times, it had the best of services for swimmers that could be offered. You had the standard lifeguards in the red polos, the coaches in the blue polos, and the trainers like him in white. It was supposed to be patriotic, but there were far too many countries that had the red, white, and blue color scheme for Steve to do anything but scoff at the notion.
What was the difference between a trainer and a coach? Well it depended on who you asked. If you asked a trainer, they would tell you age. They taught beginning, intermediate, and advanced classes.
If you asked a coach? They would tell that trainers only taught coaches inspired. They brought out the best in their students, fostered a love of water, and coached them in competitions.
They also had state of the art facilities, too. A kiddie pool, two Olympic sized swimming pools, an outdoor pool and water park, and even an endless pool.
Steve loved the endless pool. It was fifteen feet long and eight feet wide with a current that you could change the speed on so you could build up strength and endurance. It was how he unwound every day.
He stepped out of the men’s changing rooms and smiled at his assistant trainer, Robin Buckley who was waiting for him.
“You ready for another day of screaming, terrified children?” she asked with a grin, slinging one arm around his shoulders.
He returned her grin.
“You better believe it!”

I want to tell the young people about what floppy disks are and why computers needed them and I'm from the 90s so I'm missing info on what came before it but from what I do know:
These bad boys are floppy disks in various sizes:
Tumblr media
The plastic square is the outer casing and protects the small little disk inside that actually stores the data. Typically these would have like a built in fuzzy thing to keep dist off the disk.
When we think of computers, we think of zillions of codes working together so fluidly and quickly and they're able to operate tons of processes at once but a when computers were more new, they could only handle so much code at a time! Ye old computers were huge and clunky and could only tackle so much processing.
Think of them like babies- programmers could do tons with computers but the computers themselves could only store so much data!
And in fact we still use SD (storage disk) cards for computers and phones the same purpose.
That's where a floppy disk comes in! The computer would have a disk drive which would run whatever program was on the disk when you inserted it. That way you didn't clog your processing computer with code it couldn't handle.
You could also store files on the floppy disk so they didn't take up computer processing space.
Eventually we got much better at figuring out how to store data and instead of putting it on a tiny disk we made the disks bigger and CD ROMs were used for the same purpose.
Eventually when we got better at making storage smaller and easier to integrate, things like floppy disks and CD Roms wrre deemed no longer needed.l and their disk reader were omitted from most computers and laptops which is a shame!
Downloading apps is easy but you used to be able to own an actual physical copy of the thing you purchased so if your computer crashed and you couldn't get it back and had to buy a new one, you wouldn't have to pay for the program again, you'd already have a copy!
We used to have a photoshop disk that came with its own verification key and you could put it onto any computer you wanted with thw activation key with absolutely no subscription needed. One payment and your tool is yours permanently!
Likewise we can play our dvds from my old Toshiba because it still has a DVD and CD reader and the ancient 90s Dell can play old PC games because it has a CDRom reader!
Sometimes progress is great but the physical nature of the floppy disks and CD and DVDs are highly missed in today's digital based and gatekept society!
So anyways that's what floppy disks are.
Now when an old person glares at you youngins and says ha! Bet you dont know what this is! You can say why thats a floppy disk!
And if they say aha! But what's it for?
You can say IT WAS AN OLS VERSION OF STORING DATA AND PROGRAMS THE COMPUTER COULDN'T STORE ON ITS OWN BEFORE COMPUTWRS GOT FASTER ANS HAD BETTER STORAGE.
They will be so mad and so impressed.

Hi there! You might not know the answer to this but I wanted to ask because you have such good CAS screenshots. Do you have any tips/methods for editing screenshots to look better when someone doesn't have ReShade/Gshade, or know of any other sources that could help? I tried it out but my laptop just couldn't handle it and it made the game move like molasses :/ I don't mind the vanilla shading in gameplay but I still wanna make my CAS screenshots look good— do you think that's doable without shaders or is there not really a photo editing route to get the same effect(s)? I have a CAS lighting replacement, just not shaders anymore.
CAS lighting replacements are for sure a good place to start! Past that it's really just a matter of editing in post. Photopea is essentially a free version of Photoshop; that's probably my #1 editing program suggestion. (There's also GIMP, which I don't love quite as much, but it's really up to personal preference.) It may not 100% replicate the effect you'd get with ReShade, but you can certainly play around with settings/effects and see what sticks. I typically adjust contrast & sharpness first, then maybe vibrance or color saturation.
If you're using Photopea you can also utilize Actions, which are helpful because they'll do the work for you in one click. (You can use Photoshop actions as well, but you'll have to tinker with them as they sometimes won't translate 100% in Photopea.) You can download actions free from a few different sources, but I got the ones below off DeviantArt.
Unedited photo vs. with different actions applied:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It takes a little playing around to get a feel for it, but I think that'd be your best bet.

sorry to message but i just wanted to yell because I saw a post and yOU’RE THE AUTHOR OF FALLOUT FROM THE FADE ???? oh my goodness it’s my favourite fic ive read it SO many times.
i left a comment on ao3 last night because i finished reading it again and i just genuinely hope one day you finish it (i understand you have much going on i am just greedy).
but yes thank you so much for creating it, fenris and hawke are everything to me and this fic is my canon no matter what happens in veilguard. 💜
hahaha HELLO yes that is indeed I... I guess i do owe a little bit of an explanation here since its been uh... like 4 years since I last updated, yeah :| But it still makes me so happy that even after so long people still enjoy my little pile of suffering and yearning!
I don't know how many people who used to follow it are still on tumblr (I think a lot of people i used to write with/who would comment have deleted their tumblrs and AO3 accounts in the intervening years alas) but i do I owe anyone remaining a little context I guess lol. Long story made short is like very shortly after my last update i got broken up with unexpectedly from my 4 year relationship, and went into a bit of a spiral about it. I didn't fully stop writing at this point (though I think nothing I wrote in that like... year or more ended up posted anywhere), but I did realize that when I went to work on my ongoing stuff I was in a place where I was like... only wanting to write about anger/losing relationships rather than healing ones. And that part of me wanted to change some of the things I had planned for the following parts and ending of Fallout From the Fade. And so I decided to take a step back from it for a while to see if I actually wanted to make those changes when I was less bitter or if I wanted to follow my original plan.
And that took me about a year, emotionally. However by then I had actually left my prior job (where I spent a lot of time hiking/camping in the wilderness of Utah with no internet, and I used that time for writing), and started graduate school courses. Aaaannnd grad school has been slowly eating my life since. I've only posted I think one other fanfic since then, and it was a very short prose-poem one shot. Another contributing factor was my gaming tech was too old to actually play Trespasser when it came out, and by the time I got a laptop that could handle it, I had to replay the whole game but I was working full time, etc... and i felt really disconnected from the DA fandom since I couldn't read all the new fic/understand all the lore deep dive posts/experience it with everyone else simultaneously. Oh yeah and I work a second job as a professional mermaid in varying degrees of intensity depending on the season/oportunties available haha.
All that being said. I actually have written more of FFtF in the last 2 years. But like I said in the other post I made kinda recently, the long gaps between my later updates (vs the ones I was doing way more regularly in 2016-2018) had me rethink the approach I was using to write and post it, which was a chapter at a time. It felt like stringing people along in kind of a mean way to dump a chapter and then vanish for another year, and I knew I couldn't promise consistency while doing a masters/PhD program. So I've been kind of fiddling away at it slowly still, both actual writing of following chapters, and some substantial firming up/drafting sections in my outline to get to the eventual ending and ensure it's more cohesive than a lot of my slapdash chapters. But! Idk! I do also def work slower without the fun of having an audience, and miss that. and I never actually asked of the people who are left and still wanna read more of it, if they'd rather just get a chapter every 6 months or so as I scrounge it out. If you are one of those people and have an opinion def let me know.
I will say, the imminent presence of Veilguard does have me more inspired and creative again, and some of that has been going to Fallout. Especially since I'm no longer watching the videos/gameplay bioware is putting out since they have SOOO many spoilers and I wanna go into the game at least semi blind, so my creative energy has to go towards my personal stuff rather than joining everyone else in speculation and hype now. I'm definitely not promising I will have it close to finished by October when Veilguard releases, because I'm still in grad school and the next months are busy for me in terms of mermaid work too, but I am hoping I can make some good chunks of progress between now and then. But then if I say that and can't follow through after all I also don't wanna let people down.
Anyway yeah, it's sort of a lot of conflicting thoughts. But I'm still rotating Hawke and Fenris and this fic in my mind even these years later... which for me is honestly pretty normal. I mean I have whole original novels/worldbuilding ideas/etc that I've worked on for 10-15 years in my own time haha, I've been writing fiction for fun since I was like 10, so I think I also just think of stories/writing across a bigger timeline than people who start writing with fanfiction (which is MUCH faster paced) than original fiction. The difference of course is no one sees my original stuff so there's no one to care if i take 2 years between chunks of progress. SO I guess what I am trying to say is, yes definitely it is not abandoned, I am plodding away at it bit by bit, I also hope I can finish it one day!!!! that is within this decade i hope! whether or not anyone else is left to read it but me haha

hello i would love to hear more about your creatures they're very adorable
You asked for this, Tank.
(I'm on my laptop so no photos rn)
Torvi
Is my Small Island Cat, or the viking. She just turned six! I got her from a Caribbean island as a six month old kitten. She is my soulmate. She has a crooked leg that we think was broken as a wee bean, and only has about five teeth left because she's inbred AF and gets horrible resorptive lesions if I don't get her a dental with extractions at least once a year.
She is probably the creature that has loved me most in my entire life. She will follow me around the house and if I'm sitting then she has to be on top of me. If people meet her at my house they love her. That being said, she is an actual demon at the vet and has drawn blood on myself, her vet, and at least two techs, but if she gets gabapentin she just yells instead of attempts murder.
Squid
The black dog! She's a four year old Belgian Sheepdog or Groenendael. I bought her as a graduation present to myself after not having a dog for a decade. She is pretty close to everything I've ever wanted in a dog. When researching breeds I came across Belgian shepherds and thought they'd make a good match, then found that groens only come in black and my goth heart was set. Told her breeder I wanted a bitch (boys are gross,) and a confident, active dog that is game for anything. Annnnnd that's what I got. We play around in eight different dog sports, and have tried out a few more. She absolutely needs to be occupied or else she is a Menace. Less so destructive, more that she will stand directly in front of me, make hard eye contact, and scream until we do something.
She does nearly anything I ask of her because she loves me and also praise. She has little self preservation, which has led to some concerning mishaps like trying to leap off a bridge. She's absolutely not perfect, but I like her. We have some stranger reactivity at times (she will let strange men know they are not welcome to come any closer) and if we're waiting our turn at a sporting event she Screams. I swear she can read my mind, and is the reason why I'll always have at least one Groenendael.
Lusca
My Barbie cat. The floof tuxedo creature that has never met a person or animal she didn't immediately love. She has no functional brain cells. When we all lived in an apartment, she was a watchdog with the Belgian, and would stand between her front legs to people watch out the window. She hates cops. Seriously, any time she hears the sirens she poofs out and growls at the door until they're well past. She's designated herself as the whippet's snuggle buddy in the winter. She's also recently decided she has to chaperone my therapy virtual visits - she lays on my lap or beside me on the chair for the entire session.
I got Lusca because her former owner said she pissed on everything and they couldn't handle it anymore. We only minimally have this problem - if I leave dirty laundry on the floor and haven't scooped the boxes in a few days she might, but it's honestly not a major issue anymore.
Rogue
One and a half year old whippet. I love her but she is honestly the stupidest dog I've ever had lol. Decided a while back that I wanted another dog, but not something as intense as the Squid. Considered Silken Windhounds and Borzoi, but decided I already had too much fluff in the house, and several colleagues recommended a specific whippet breeder to me. So I brought home this dumbass. She's pretty strictly ornamental, especially when compared to all the things the Belgian does.
Quite possibly the happiest creature in my home. Her hobbies include theft, laying on top of anyone she can reach, refusing to understand why the cats swat her when she shoves her nose into their bellies, and zooming. We had a rough time of her teenager stage and I'm pretty sure she hated me for a few months because I enforced our boundaries. I did mess up a bit raising her in that I didn't take her around other dogs much, so she really only likes Squid unless the new dogs spend roughly 20 minutes ignoring her first.
I am certifiably insane and constantly casually considering either a second Belgian, or a Dutch Shepherd. Second groen would be for show and sports. Dutchie would be for bite sports, because I really want to try them out but Squid is not quite into it due to all the work we put into not biting people as a puppy.

I'M NOT DONE YET.
After much consideration I have decided to dip my toes into Wuthering Waves!
Surprise is an understatement of my feelings and definitely still an unfit description of my feelings.
I remember seeing gameplay of some closed beta test like what... 2 years ago I think? Thought it looked really cool, like a darker version of genshin... right up my alley.
Of course things changed since then and my laptop broke snd I got a ps5 in the meantime... which meant I might not be able to play. However I also got a phone now that can handle games like genshin and HSR, so I might just try it.
So I did. Was a bit hesitant ofc because I much prefer playing huge games with open world on a big screen, it makes the whole experience more immersive and exciting to me. I only played genshin and hsr on my phone when I wasn't at home and didn't have another option.
I really wanted to try WuWa just to have a more casual approach at a game like this. I previously barely knew anything about the game except for very few small clips of gameplay and some character designs. With HSR I knew a lot about the game already due to it being a hyv project so I basically followed a lot of the process of the game between cbt and official release. I also thoight it would be fun to judt play a bit and blow all the pulls that the game gives out fpr free in the beginning.
SO. I was very surprised by how nice the beginning sequence looked on my phone. I was also immediately hooked with the OST of the starting screen. Very much liked the mysetery beginning - no talking, just these two characters interacting... yes.
When the actual game started I was a bit concerned that the graphics of the character designs might not look the part, because I saw that many people apparently had issues with this. But it was fine, looked very good actually.
BUT THEN. Launch day, right. Apparently WuWa was created on an engine that is usually used to make games for high end devices such as good PCs, so there was some issues expected for mobile right... but when it came to me actually playing and controlling MC... she was T-Posing floating around 😭💀 no walking animation just ... it felt like an awful issue tbh. Restarted the game several times but the issue kept coming up. It was so bad that I couldn't even climb up the first wall, so I just had to stop. Made me really sad because I really wantwd to get into the game but that was unplayable... when I logged back in sometimes she's get a climbing animation but then get stuck on the wall and nothing worked to get her off there... the graphics and everything looked fine... good even? But this just didn't work so I sighed and closed the game.
I wasn't the only person experiencing issues tho... and the devs were quick to respond on the issues saying they were working on solutions and giving out more compensation. So I wanted to wait until there was some update.
The next say a friend of mine asked me sbout the game and I explained my issues and because I was bored I opened the game again just to see whether something might have changed. And well what can I say... it worked just fine now?? The game had downloaded something and then it was as if nothing ever happened and I was SO HAPPY. Also sad because I could barely play that day because of work but I played 30 minutes and i loved it.
The combat is so refreshing! It feels really dynamic and even though I previously had my issues with the controls for genshin, I somehow managed to get used to it now. Ofc I still can't wait for a ps5 release (praying) but so far it looks really good. Love the designs of the first few characters we meet. First battles were also no problem.
A me-problem is definitely the wordy-ness(?) of the beginning. Just like in every other game they try to explain to you the basics of the world building and system in simple terms but there's just so many new words 😭💀 my gp to attitude is fuck around and find out. Wouldn't be able to explain what a Tacet Field or Echo is to save my damn life. But I can play the game! I have played like a maximum of an hour and haven't even unlocked the banner system yet but while the game lets you roam around freely between mission points... I got that dangerous feeling that I could spend hours doing that and that is definitely a good sign. Very excited to play more. Might make it a before bed routine.
I want to be more casual about it and I think the fact that it's mobile is gonna help. Can't wait to meet more of these cool looking characters. Gonna try and pull Jiyan :) wish me luck.

You Gotta be Shit-TEN me
i swear to Entropy, if i tacked an extra year or so onto my laptop's lifespan through the judicious application of compressed air... well, i'll be happy, natch, but i will also be paradoxically pissed off.
youtube
Meh. We talked about this one last week. It's just as much now as it was then.
youtube
This is the original(? Still kind of mysterious there) version of The Land of Nod that we took a look at on LittleBite-sizedPlanet 263. i wasn't going to put this one up, but... like, i had the whole thing recorded for comparison purposed anyways, so, like, why let it go to waste? If you run this next to LBsA episode 184, you can see clearly the movement issues i mentioned in the LBsP review. It is just such a pain in the butt to get anywhere wivout the lower gravity in the LBP2 version. It makes me wonder even more, why did weirdybeardy bother publishing this?
youtube
This level is shockingly good for managing to maintain that LBP1 feel, while still actually being a good time. You can see the bits where LBP3 tech is used, and used to good effect, but it's really like having a run through a quite well-done bit of oldschool. i really hope God_Est_1983 (who i think is SiriusOculusCentrifuge7488 on YouTube, and i was pretty sure i was following here, but now i can't seem to find) sticks wiv this theme, 'cause they have a very solid grasp on how to do it right.
youtube
Ahh, roller coasters, who doesn't love roller coasters? Plenty of people for entirely legitimate reasons. i love roller coasters, tho', and it's been ages since i've been on one, so i am absolutely here for running into them in LBP from time to time. i do wonder what happened to the vehicles fad. i know there're still folx making them, but i hardly seem to run into a good vehicle centered level anymore. This one was nice in that it did give us some game play along wiv the ride, even if it's fiddly, kludgy, and promises a secret area i sure as heck couldn't find (despite breaking the level in two different places looking for it.
youtube
i really, really had a good time wiv this one. Just a straight race, no frills, but pretty well put-together for all that. The lighting is just bright enough to track the action, but plenty dark enough to give a bit of thrill (which is a bit surprising given how poorly LBP3 tends to handle lighting in LBP1 & 2 levels). Yeah, simple, sweet, fun. i bet this would have been a whole time wiv friends.
youtube
Wow... this one is. Kind of a lot? i mean it is impressive for the amount of stuff robbieeffect managed to cram in there, and i did appreciate all the secrets (and a counter at the end, always nice to see those in an LBP1 level). It is kludgy as all fuck, tho', and i'd argue some of the elements are a bit questionable. Still, i am never forgiving this one for doing 8 times the views of an average video, and all because of that silly ass Brian holding a martini that wound up in the thumbnail. i mean, i knew what i was doing, but i still hate that i turned out to be correct.
youtube
This was a nice one. Nothing too special to write home about, but decent platforming, and a pretty good look. The real neat point, tho', was how they actually tried to make some fairly dramatic changes if you replayed wiv the sticker you get for winning. Sure, it's just lighting and a little bit of camera, but it makes for a markedly different experience (one that, i don't think it was originally designed for, and some of the bits are near impossible, because there's no background to give a contrast to your silhouette) that i really appreciated. It's very seldom i run into levels that really try to pull that off at all.
youtube
We talked about this on Friday, and it's the same as it was then. i still can't believe Marmalade chops up the baked bean tree for fire wood. That's all kinds of fucked up (that's not in the level, that's in the short story, but still).
youtube
i had a real good time wiv this one. It's got a really good look to it, and manages to be pretty smooth and fun for an Oddsock level (i mean, the character is intended for smooth gameplay, i'm just not sure a lot of creators get how to pull that off well).
youtube
For a first level, this is really quite good. It ends a little abruptly, and i would have done a little bit more to differentiate the big swaths of cardboard for the walls (dephysed thin layer shapes and stripes, probably, if i were averse to using stickers), but the gameplay is fun, varied, and relatively zippy. That first set of jumps sets some expectations the level doesn't really live up to, so i think i might've had that bit later, if i weren't going to build on the precision aspect. Still, this is seriously solid work right off the chump.
--------------------------------------------
So that's our ten. i got a little done today, if not as much as i would have hoped. After i got that bombtest finished, i was just knackered for no reason? Got a nap in, then had to run around to get some air so i could fix the laptop and type all this up for y'all, you wonderful wonderful people. i mean that last part seriously. Thank you for putting up wiv my shite. Anyhoot. Gotta get this curry cooked, 'cause it ain't gonna do it itself. Maybe i'll get some more create mode in before Dead Cells tonight, but who knows. At any rate, have a great day, and keep yourselves safe, ok?

2024 Game Clear #21 The Legend of Korra
Tumblr media
Not the show, the digital only 2014 video game by PlatinumGames and published by Activision that was delisted in 2017 that I bought in 2016 for very cheap but has sat in my steam account unused for 7 years because my laptop at the time was so bad it couldn't handle this game somehow!
It's also very important for the ATLA lore because we learn that Iroh became a filthy capitalist during his time in the spirit world
Tumblr media
So this is an interesting one because this game got absolutely demolished by reviewers at the time, just checking the reviews on the wikipedia page some outlets were giving this game 2's and 3's. I remember a lot reviews remarking that it was this cash grab stain of the franchise... which feels very weird to me because i think this game is better then the Avatar games that came before, and certainly better then whatever that Gamemill slop that came out recently... I almost wonder if reviewers thought they were reviewing a full priced game because sure I could see them taking issue with the lack of content under that context but the game launched for $15 US.
Tumblr media
I do have a fair amount criticism: The game starts with your bending blocked which uhh isnt the game putting it's best foot foward, some bosses are spongy and no subtitles track is always annoying, there's also not much enemy variety for a 4 hour game that's not a big deal i don't think. Not platinum's finest work but it's decent 6 out 10 that's worth a look if your a fan. You just might need to do some digging to get it these days (please don't buy a old steam key for $7000) and I can't get mad at a korra game that lets me parry a guy off his motorbike and do a fist of north star style ten thousand fists on him.
Tumblr media
The game does a good job looking and feeling like the show, the proper voice actors are here (though admittedly it's mostly just Korra and Jinora) every level has animated cutscene that look like the show, I'm pretty sure I recognized some of the level music being pulled straight from the show so it's sound like the show too. You can feel pretty powerful using your bending to wipeout everyone around you.
Tumblr media
There's also a plot! I don't really have much to say about it really, it takes place after season 2 and it's really just kind of one of those "all your old enemies are bad" video game plots, not in the "Amon is randomly back" but you gotta find out why there a bunch of Equalist, Triple Threat Triad and dark spirits goons attacking you. it's pretty basic but I like the new villain design at least
Last thing I gotta say that's more of a tangent but I have a memory of a couple of reviewers holding up the Naga chase segments to make a dig against Sega being like "Wow they made a better sonic game then Sega in minigame" and now that i've played it... It's just Temple Run???? like lane changes and swipe turns in all? Guy if you want a Sonic auto runner you can play one right now! in 2014 even! very silly time

Do you think you could handle a job in the medical field? Why or why not? I considered it once mainly because learning about the human body was always fascinating to me, but I realized that was all there is it - I just like reading about it. Emergency situations are 100% going to send me into a panic, and I'm not so much a fan of the hours either.
Would you rather edit photos on your phone or computer? Phone because there are loads of apps that can hand-hold your way through editing. I tried Photoshop on my laptop for a few months as a teenager but we just don't make a good pair.
What is one electronic device you own that you have not used in a long time? The very first iPad. It's actually my mom's, but my siblings and I ended up using it the most. I brought it back to life briefly in college when my old phone died on me and we couldn't really allot some money yet to get me a new one.
What is one thing you are currently behind on? Cleaning out my bag.
When was the last time you wore a dress or a skirt? I wore my flowy white dress for work a few weeks ago.
When was the last time you had a migraine? Same, it was a couple of weeks ago I think. I was coming back to work after a long weekend and I guess my head hadn't fully adjusted yet that day. I was fully nauseated by like 2 PM and had to power through for the rest of the afternoon.
What is your favorite thing about Instagram? The reels, which is also how I know I'm getting older what with the younger crowds preferring Tiktok LOL. I like how the interface for reels is able to account for all my interests, so I can get a wrestling video first then have it be a BTS video next. With Tiktok you only get one feed and it's always a mix of your algorithm plus whatever Tiktok wants to show you, so I always find myself ending up scrolling through and ignoring everything and just closing the app altogether.
When was the last time you wore a flower in your hair? Maybe in like 2016 when flower crowns were in?
List three words to describe yourself using the first letter of your middle name. Inquisitive, impatient, (sometimes) indifferent.
Have you ever had a friend with the same middle name as you? No, not with a friend; but in general I've noticed it's a lot more common as a first name. I don't get to meet a lot of people with Isabelle as a second name, and especially with the same spelling.
What color was your locker in high school? It was blue for a couple of years but I also remember having gray and white ones.
How many framed pictures of you and a family member or friend can you see from where you're sitting right now? No, I don't keep any in my room.
What is the first thing you think of when you see the rainbow emoji? 🌈? Either simply the rainbow, or the LGBT flag.
When was the last time you got a new pair of glasses? My birthday. I needed to get a new prescription anyway but because it was my birthday I went for the eyeglasses that would be double the price because it was an official BT21 collaboration/endorsement, lol.
Do you prefer to play chess or checkers? Checkers. I have a vague understanding of the game. I never learned how to play chess, no matter how often I've asked my cousins to help me.
What color was your first cell phone? I think the phone itself was gray, but it came in a red Winnie the Pooh case from the moment I received it s I've always known it to be red.
Do you remember when smartphones were a new thing that had just come out, and only rich people had them? Kind of. I was around 9 when the first iPhone came out and didn't care for gadgets for the most part, until I saw a schoolmate whip out hers and people were fawning over it and that's when I realized it was apparently a big deal. I found it bizarre because it wasn't even just an everyday rich kid thing, it was a completely filthy filthy 1% rich spoiled kid thing since even after months, it was still only a handful of people who had it at the time.
If you could choose to have been born in a different month, which month would you choose to be born in, and why? I'm perfectly fine with April. Based from the people I know, it's a relatively uncommon month for birthdays, and I like that.
….and which month were you actually born in? I was born in April.
Does your first name rhyme with anything? (If so, what?) Noggin? Hahaha.
Have you ever met anyone who didn't like the color blue? Not that I know of.
What color was the last pill you took? A lighter shade of lime.
How often do you use emojis? Pretty often. I tend to use them when I'm being super expressive or emotional in a post or message.
When was the last time you took a selfie? Friday.
How many E's are in your full name? Three.
What is the first letter of the name of the street you grew up on? Nope.
Which decade were you born in? Towards the end of the 90s. Late enough that I have virtually no memories of the decade.
Who was the last friend of yours to have a birthday? It was Jaynie's birthday yesterday.
Are you looking forward to your next birthday? Why or why not? 🥳 I'm always excited for and make a big deal out of my birthdays. Idk, it's the one time in the year I get to have things my way so I like celebrating it. That, and because growing up my birthdays were for the most part just an ordinary day and I'm desperately trying to make up for those years.
When was the last time you blew up a balloon? October 2022. I bought balloons for when I went all out for my watch party of BTS' Busan concert and had friends over.
If you had to go an entire week without using any technology, what do you think you would spend most of your time doing instead? Go back to painting and coloring and trying new, farther-away restaurants. Restyling my room doesn't sound like a bad idea too.
What is the first thing you think of when you hear the word "mast"? Boats.
Where is the weirdest place you've ever slept? At the Metrowalk parking lot.
Would you rather travel to Asia or France? There are still so many places in Asia I'd love to visit.
What is something new that you've learned recently, that you didn't know before? My dad taught me how to start my car if it refuses to.

I finished bg3!!! I still have the newly added epilogue left to do, but I'm procrastinating playing that because I don't wanna say goodbye to my babies. It only took me just under 94 hours, which is the longest it's ever taken me to finish a game, but that's unsurprising given how fucking MASSIVE bg3 is content-wise. I know for a FACT there's still a LOT of sidequests I missed on my first playthrough.
My computer couldn't really handle the graphics in all the cutscenes in the post-Act 3 stuff, so there were a lot of graphical glitches during that, which was sad. (The dragon was invisible for 99% of the final fight, Withers is perpetually naked now, Orpheus's mind flayer body has no textures, and when Lae'zel summoned the dragons at the end, they were all missing heads so they just had floating eyeballs, plus a few NPCs with their tits out in the cutscenes. Not to mention that a ton of other textures didn't fully load and were just smooth. (but that last one has always been a problem. just not to this extent.)) Tbf, my laptop is at least 4 years old at this point. It's not exactly a graphics powerhouse. The funny thing is that there's hardly ever any lag. Just texture issues.
The last fight was really frustrating, because I made Orpheus turn into the mind flayer, and dude has essentially NO HIT POINTS. (150, compared to the rest of the party. Gale was the next lowest with 172, but he hardly got touched the first 3/4 of the final fight. Mt GTav had the Amulet from the House of Hope, and so they had more HP than Lae'zel.) I think he died literally 3 times??? And went down at least 2 other times. In the end, it took both my Bard Tav and Shadowheart using both their action and bonus action every round to heal him enough to keep him upright so he could actually subdue the fucking Netherbrain. Ofc, then once he opened the portal, it took less than 2 rounds to finish the brain off.
I love this game so much, and I can totally see why it won GOTY. It's captivating, and well-made. (Imagine how perfect it could have been without crunch-time! Fuck corporate crunch time.) I enjoyed just about every aspect of it, from beginning to end. It's definitely up there in my list of favorite games, although I haven't played all that many game. It might even beat D:OS2 in terms of enjoyment, although I do wish bg3 has D:OS2's level of polish. (but then again, D:OS2 has been out for a while, and is in its Definitive Edition, so I suppose it makes sense.)
I will say that having to either choose a party member or Orpheus to become Illithid was... interesting. I'm glad they give us Orpheus as an option, because given that a lot of the characters have spent the entire game desperately avoiding becoming Illithid, it would be so counter-productive to their stories to have them transform at the last minute. Though, I suppose that is the devs' point. That being a hero means making hard choices, and sometimes those choices mean that you don't get to live to see the world you saved. Or that the world you saved will hate you afterwards.

How come I'm finding out just now how much my age group doesn't know? I learned all about computers when I was a preteen, just from messing around with my Dad's old thing. Playing around with different settings, experimenting with the programs and different websites, you know, exploring. Because I was a child and children are curious, aren't they? I had used computers before, to play already-downloaded games, but when I was nine, my Mom got me my own email address and I really went ham on my dad's computer. It ran Windows, but I don't remember what version. Might've installed a virus or few, because it doesn't turn on anymore, but in that process I learned how to recognize scammy websites that just give you weird downloads and/or junk emails. They have a pattern to them. Also figured out how to uninstall said weird downloads in all that. Like the bazillion home bars I had in Internet Explorer at a couple points.
I even found the fonts! And made all the bars pink! And found old pictures of me with a cat!
All because I was curious and bored! And when I'm bored I read anything and everything! Especially since that dinosaur of a computer was so slow. It truly taught me patience.
Now, I'm 22 and most of the computers in our house are Chromebooks. Sure, it's a little more user-friendly for my younger siblings, but I don't want user-friendly when trying to play with code. Couldn't even root the device without supposedly factory resetting it. Not to mention Chrome OS unexpectedly deletes data when you least expect it. Like you've just logged in for the first time. Android needs to stay on phones, not migrate to "computers".
And when I set up both of my own Windows laptops (2016 and 2021), I ran into all of those prompts that J described. Good thing I read everything. Especially since several months back, my newer one, the good one (because the first one is basically a tablet in disguise, with a processor that can barely handle its own operating system) wanted me to update to Windows 11. Couldn't see a ton of detail in the one screenshot it showed me, but from what I could tell, it looked enough like a Chrome copycat for me to decline. There was also a short list of changes that would happen, and several features being removed were on there.
I miss old technology. My exceptions are the things that literally didn't exist before, like my VR headset, but I miss when the user had more control, and you didn't have to upgrade your phone just because it stopped receiving updates and is no longer compatible with a lot of things.
Me: oh yeah, if you think school photography is hard now, try imagining doing this with film.
The new girl: what’s film?
Me: … film. Like… film that goes in a film camera.
New girl: what’s that mean?
Me: … before cameras were digital.
New girl: how did you do it before digital?
Me:… with film? I haven’t had enough coffee for this conversation

hey splatoon fans, while you're waiting for side order i highly recommend playing TRON 2.0
it's a FPS sequel to TRON that came out in 2003. it's about the now-adult son of two of the main human characters from the original TRON movie getting sucked into a virus-infected computer, and in the process of trying to disinfect the computer, he uncovers a plot from the company taking over his parents' company to use their laser technology to digitize armies of humans and take over the world.
do i have you hooked yet?
if i don't, consider this: i'm recommending it in huge part because it's largely a story about jet, the protagonist, learning to reconnect with his dad after they both lost his mom, who died in a workplace laser accident and was most likely partially digitized. the digitization laser was her own life's work. the digitization AI, MA3A, takes on lora's voice after her death (and is voiced by lora's actress from the original film), and there are workplace rumors that it's because alan incorporated the digitized portions of her remains into MA3A's code. jet spends a lot of the game defending his mom's digital/digitized ghost from external threats.
what i'm getting at is that if you're excited for side order because of how it's hinted at dealing with themes of grief in a y2k digital landscape... they're mostly subtext in TRON 2.0 but i still think the game is seriously up your alley.
if you're a splatoon fan who hasn't played many other shooter games before, TRON 2.0 is a great introduction to the PC shooter world imo. if you're squeamish about blood/gore/giblets flying everywhere, there's none of that in TRON 2.0. if you're a splatoon fan because you like shooters but you've never given TRON 2.0 a chance, this is your sign!
some pros of TRON 2.0:
it looks fucking awesome
TRON 2.0 has a very turn-of-the-century take on the aesthetics of the original TRON. it predates tron legacy by seven years and it doesn't have any of that apple-store aesthetic. it's got all the juicy colors of the original film, with lots of crisp details that the original animation hardware couldn't handle. the digital world of TRON 2.0 only gets better every year with age. meanwhile it's got a (for its time) state-of-the-art glow mechanic that gives the game a very comforting soft feel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and these are just the ones i've got on my own PC! (the last one i dont know if it's my, screenshot but the rest are from my own screenshots folder).
it can run on basically any PC
no, fr, this required some pretty good hardware when it came out... but the game turned 20 this year. i managed to run TRON on my old laptop after it very nearly split in half like a 2ds and took half an hour to boot by using my parents' TV as a monitor. it didn't even drop that many frames! this was in 2020. it didnt even have a graphics card.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
yeah i was a grown adult when that photo was taken. no i dont care that i look 13. my car had just burst an engine rod in the middle of the desert about 48 hours before this was taken, so my fit wasn't really at the top of my priorities. (don't ask.)
you can get it DRM-free
don't get the steam version y'all, i can vouch for it being super glitchy. i can basically only run it while using mods to launch it without contacting steam. get it from gog.com.
ethics note: pirate the TRON movies as much as you want but im pretty sure the original company still gets some bucks when you buy 2.0 legally, and disney fucked them over pretty bad when it comes to the rights to TRON 2.0's characters and story, and they ripped off half the plot of the game to make the movie (and the movie is worse). if you don't wanna drop $10 wait for a gog sale and drop $3. (and honestly, if you're paying $20/year to get disconnected every 15 matches in splatoon, even paying $10 for a good retro game isn't the worst financial decision you've ever made.)

Hey guys
Just wanted to be a little bit vulnerable today, I wanted to open up about my current journey on my physical and self improvement ✨🌿
Ever since childhood I have struggled with weight issues that also run in the family, 2021 is the year where I decided enough is enough, I need to get things in control and take my life into my own responsibility!
Through this journey it has been hard, yes, and I have gone through a transformation internally where I addressed why I have the weight I do and why I am so hesitant to lose it.
Because of my family being overweight for some reason I felt like being healthy was an act of treason as stupid as it sounds, as well as thinking of my weight as a protective barrier against the things I couldn't handle in my life.
It has been very difficult but I'm slowly but surely getting through, and I couldn't be prouder of myself !
I have begun cycling and doing yoga as well as addressing my food cravings and impulses professionally.
I learnt that eating isn't just eating.
The food you eat has a mental effect on you.
I have been navigating what foods trigger certain behaviours and thought patterns as well as considering my blood type when I eat and it has helped a lot !
I am on top of my game !
I have also been visualising as a form of manifesting and a way to mentally ease me into getting into the territory of being a healthy weight.
So far I have started doing OMAD which has helped me feel amazing, energetic, more alert as well as the additional benefit of shedding weight.
I am also about to pick up competitive tennis playing again so I am going to be forced to become active again which I am honestly thankful for.
I also wake up early 3 days a week and cycle for an hour as cardio.
My heaviest weight has been 85kgs and I promised myself I will never see that again, I am quite petite and 85 kgs was almost obese for me.
I was also unhappy with myself while at 85 kgs and it was also negatively affecting my social life because I would unconsciously give insecure or aggressive body language because of my internal turmoil, as well being to shy to talk because of my negative self image.
As well as an aspect that many don't talk about is while I was almost obese I encountered brain fog and lesser mental capacity which was a big wake up call for me when I was told why weight could be the problem because I am an A student and my intellect is one of my best qualities.
So with this new improvement I feel so much better mentally, spiritually and physically 😁
Also a little note, pretty privilege is real and I have experienced it first hand.
When I began caring about my weight I also began to care about my hair, my skin and have been spoiling myself etc 💚
I have developed a skin routine where i use
African black soap
Shea butter
Witch hazel toner
As well as a body care routine where i
I use exfoliating gloves or scrub with a scented shower gel or bar
When I get out, I dry brush my skin
After dry brushing I massage bio oil into my body
After that use a light lotion, essential oils and perfume for fragrance
As for my hair
I have invested in a quality shampoo and conditioner
I bought a quality hair straightener
I have begun using protective styling more
I cut of my previously relaxed hair
I invested in a hair perfume
I have a hood dryer
I have also been learning hair care tips from a professional hair stylist
My go to style for my hair is either a high ponytail with knotless box braids or a fluffy curled Bob which kind of makes me look like Prince 😂
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for how I have spoiled myself
I updated my workout gear
I got a leopard print robe
I got a new laptop
I replaced my jewellery collection
I'm in the middle of redoing my room so it fits my new standards
I've been networking more
I bought more books
I have been repairing my relationships with family and friends so there is no unnecessary hate or discomfort in my life
I'm introducing a tennis bracelet and necklace to my collection
I've also been putting a larger focus onto my spiritual routine and peace
I have bought more makeup for myself
Reinventing yourself is one of the most magical things you could ever do ❕
Anything is possible 💗
