a small surprise (gravity falls g/t!)
aka when you fall back down the gravity falls rabbit hole and before you know it you're brainstorming every possible g/t idea...
and then you end up with something like this: ford's borrower friend is left alone and confused when a mysterious force jolts them awake one night... and discovers that the author of the journals has a mysterious twin brother
s/o to @pocket-lad for all the ramblings about giant stans and for fostering this idea with me -- check out their take on this!!
part 2
--------------------
Jay had never felt tremors like this before.
She thought the earth was about to split open and swallow her whole with how intensely her world shook. Of course she had felt earthquakes before – or what she thought were earthquakes. Ford had tried to explain it a million times, and Jay pretended to get it around explanation No. 837,382 so she wouldn’t have to hear it anymore.
But that was ages ago. Ford had gotten pretty much impossible to talk to after the whole triangle worshiping thing, and after Fiddleford quit, the house had fallen into an intense state of disrepair. Jay still lived here, of course, because it was warm and safe and Ford still remembered to leave food and water out for her. But anytime she tried to talk to him, he would look at her like he was hallucinating. He probably was.
It had been a few weeks since the two had actually spoken face to face. She felt uncomfortable trying to get through to someone who clearly wasn’t himself anymore. But this – earthquake, whatever it was – was enough to scare her to the point where she was afraid of being alone. She at least had to ask Ford what had happened; even if he was delusional most of the time, she knew him well enough that she could glean some sort of answer from his ramblings.
Careful not to trip over fallen objects, Jay made her way from her little hiding spot upstairs to the small pulley system Ford helped her construct to get down to the bunker. That had taken a lot of convincing, since Ford didn’t understand why he couldn’t just carry her down with him every time – “It’s much more practical!” he would say, dramatically pointing his finger up in the air – but she eventually persuaded him because he liked a challenge. It worked just as lowering a bucket into a well did, a simple enough mechanism that Jay could use herself no matter what. Ford was always fascinated by her raw strength.
The house was dark and quiet – nothing new – but there was an eerie feeling in the air that Jay just couldn’t shake. Something felt… wrong. Ford’s presence was easily felt, and Jay couldn’t sense him anywhere. The only sound was the snowstorm battering against the thin glass windows, making the wood creak and shake but nothing more. With one hand, Jay clutched the sewing needle that served as her protection. The other was pressed behind her back, ready to fend off anything from behind. It didn’t make her feel much better.
“What did you do now, Ford…” Jay muttered to herself, eyes darting left and right. It was hard to make out much of anything, but the usual controlled chaos of the main floor felt skewed, and it was clear to see from up on the table. Maybe once she got to her makeshift elevator, she’d start to feel better.
But she stopped short of the bunker’s entrance, because a sudden noise scared the living daylights out of her. She flung her needle forward, but nothing was in her immediate vicinity. She cautiously lowered the weapon, and it didn’t take long for her eyes to find the source. Standing in the center of the main room, staring intently at the journal like it was his last remaining possession on Earth, was…
“Ford?”
Ford froze, stiff as a board. Jay swallowed the lump in her throat. He was probably pissed at her.
“Ford…” Jay paused. She didn’t really think about what she would say if – when – she finally saw him. “What–what happened? Is everything okay? It’s–”
She was cut off abruptly when Ford turned around, and Jay’s stomach dropped so fast she thought it might take her through the floor. He – this man – he had Ford’s face, but this was not him. The hair was all wrong (he had a mullet, for Christ’s sake). The posture. The clothes. The look in his glasses-less eyes as he stared right at her. This wasn’t him. Jay was baffled. Did he do something to himself? Is this just what he looked like now? Could he really have changed that much in a few weeks?
Not-Ford blinked, then blinked again. His mouth hung slightly agape, and his eyes were blown wide. He looked dirty and tired, but most pressing, he looked mad. Mad at Jay.
“What the…”
Not-Ford’s gruff, hoarse voice was the final nail in the coffin. Ford didn’t sound like that. Even when he was losing his mind, he spoke with a surprising amount of authority. He was just like that. This man… he sounded lost.
The reality of the situation hit Jay like a freight train. Slowly, she held her hands up and began to back away, like she was retreating from an animal. Whether this was some weird, alternate version of Ford or a complete stranger, it didn’t change the fact that she was being seen.
Jay was quick. Not-Ford was quicker.
At a blinding speed that Jay would never get used to from humans, Not-Ford had grabbed a jar from an adjacent table and slammed it on top of her, eliciting a very high-pitched scream. She jumped when a piece of paper replaced the wood of the table underneath her feet, and in just a few seconds, her world turned upside down. Literally. She was flipped to the bottom of the jar as Not-Ford brought her shaking form up to eye level.
“What the hell are you?” That rough voice was distorted through thick glass, but still terrifying. “And what the hell do you know about my brother?”
Jay almost choked. Brother? Ford had never mentioned a brother.
“Wh–who–where’s Ford?” Jay barely had the courage to speak.
“Oh, it talks,” Not-Ford sounded intrigued for a moment. “What, are you one of his experiments gone wrong? You’re so… tiny.”
Jay opened her mouth to respond, but her words died in her throat when Not-Ford – Ford’s brother, apparently – tilted the jar to the side, causing her to fall to the side with an unceremonious oof. He was observing her, like some caged animal. She tried to regain her footing, but failed miserably each time. Her legs felt like they were still stuck in those tremors. She wanted to yell at him to stop, but she could barely get air in her lungs as she was swirled around like water going down a drain.
“Huh,” Not-Ford said, going still after what felt like a million years. “Did my brother do this to you?”
Jay stumbled and tilted her head. “Do–do what?”
“What do you mean, do what. Make you tiny.”
“Make me – no, he didn’t make me tiny,” Jay shot back, almost insulted. She felt the anger boil up inside of her when Not-Ford almost smiled.
“Oh, man, you really got the short end of the stick, then. Literally.”
Despite herself, Jay rolled her eyes. Height jokes. Very original.
“L–look, I don’t know who you are, but–”
“Can it, pipsqueak!” Jay actually had to cover her ears at the sheer volume of his voice. “I’m asking the questions here. Did you help him with this – portal thing?”
The portal. The tremors. Jay’s eyes widened. No. He didn’t…
Ford’s brother evidently understood her look of recognition. “Ah, so you do know about it. Well, you’re gonna help me fix it.”
“Wh–” Jay didn’t get a chance to speak as he swung the jar to his side. She flew into the side, and she tried to ignore the way her arm crunched under the pressure. The world whizzed by underneath her feet, and she could barely keep her balance with the way Not-Ford was lumbering around. Looks like she was getting a ride down to the bunker after all.
Jay’s mind raced with ways she could get herself out of this. As badly as she wanted to figure out what happened to Ford, she didn’t care to have this guy help her. She could easily find Ford by herself. Maybe she could try to find Fiddleford, too, but for all Jay knew, he was halfway across the world at this point, so that was probably a fruitless effort. He was very adamant about quitting when he left that night, which always made Jay sad whenever she thought about it. She sorely missed his calm demeanor and gentleness with her. She liked spending time with Ford, but at the end of the day, he had a tendency to regard her as some kind of scientific marvel, not a fully functioning person. Fiddleford never seemed to care. He just wanted to make sure she was safe and happy.
A harsh jolt brought Jay back to reality. Oh. Right. Not-Ford. Ford’s crazy brother. It had taken her a bit to notice, but Not-Ford’s hands were shaking. And the anger… it didn’t seem like he was mad at her. That made no sense; the only crime she was guilty of was knowing Ford. But the way he spoke about Ford – like he wasn’t here right now – and how the portal needed fixing, and he wanted help doing it… what exactly happened?
“Stupid secret bunker… stupid portal… stupid brother…” Not-Ford muttered. He was glancing behind him, as if Ford would pop out at any moment and yell surprise!
Not-Ford definitely got discombobulated, but he eventually found his way back to the control room. He threw the jar onto the main control panel, and Jay shut her eyes, hoping the sensation of moving would fade away quickly.
“Alright, short stuff,” Not-Ford said gruffly, slamming a journal in front of her. “Tell me how to turn this thing on.”
Jay started blankly at the journal. It wasn’t even opened to the correct section, and she could barely see over the horizon of the pages.
Not-Ford grunted. “Well, what are you waiting for?” He narrowed his eyes at her. “Tiny people can read, right?”
“Wh–what makes you think I can do anything?” Jay managed to choke out. It had worked on Ford when they first met; using her diminutive size to her advantage. She had wriggled out of so many things she didn’t want to do by playing the useless card.
Ford’s brother stopped. He abruptly grabbed the jar, lifting it up to his dirty, unhappy face. Jay gasped and inched back until her head softly hit the glass. Through the distortion of her clear prison, it looked like he was actually considering her words. If he was anything like Ford, it would work.
He was nothing like Ford.
“Heh, if you want to weasel your way out of this, you’re gonna have to try harder, tiny,” he smirked, placing the jar back in front of the journal.
Jay shook her head in disbelief. “But – what –” she paused. Trying to reason with him wouldn’t work. This guy clearly didn’t work like that. With wide eyes and trembling hands, Jay considered her next move. Her primary goal of getting the hell out of this jar didn’t seem like it was going to happen anytime soon, and he obviously wasn't going to fall for a sob story. She could help him, but based on the way he’s been acting, he’d probably put her in a closet and forget about her as quickly as he found her. She looked up, trying to read Not-Ford through the warped glass. His hands were tightly wrapped around his waist, and his eyes darted nervously at every little sound. His demeanor didn’t match his tough-guy attitude one bit.
A lightbulb went off in Jay’s head: He’s desperate. And she could use that to her advantage.
“I’ll help you if you tell me what happened,” she said, sounding way less assertive than she wanted to. Not-Ford regarded her in something of a condescending curiosity before bursting out into laughter. Jay felt the heat rush to her cheeks. Why was he laughing? What was so funny? Oh, she shouldn’t have tried to play tough. She was in no position to negotiate.
“Trying to do this my way, huh?” Not-Ford leaned back in his seat. “Alright, I’ll play along.”
Jay was stunned silent.
“Go ahead, ask me what you wanna know. But don’t think about trying to be slick, because I have no problem shaking you around like a martini.”
It took her a second to gather her thoughts. She wasn’t planning on conning him, because she knew the consequences, but it was interesting that Not-Ford defaulted to assuming the worst. There were a million things she wanted – needed – to ask, but he was volatile. She had to tread carefully. So she started simple.
“Wh… what’s your name? And are you really… Ford’s brother?”
“Name’s Stanley,” he said, brushing some loose hair from his face. “And yeah, Poindexter's my brother. We’re twins.”
“Twins…” Jay repeated. That’s why they looked identical, even down to their names. But why would Ford never say anything about it? “I… Ford never mentioned anything about having a twin.”
Stanley laughed. “Yeah, that’s not surprising. We haven’t seen each other in years. He was probably tryin’ to pretend I didn’t exist.”
Jay frowned. Stanley sounded miserable saying that out loud, and she didn’t need to ask to know what that meant.
“And what are you supposed to be? Some kind of fairy or something? I know Ford was into weird stuff, but this is just unnatural.”
Jay crossed her arms. “I’m a borrower.”
Stanley blinked. “You say that like I’m supposed to know what that is.”
“Well, it’s what… I am,” Jay said, gesturing to herself.
“Okay… so, what? You were Ford’s pet or something?”
“I was not – no!” Jay cried as that familiar sinking feeling entered her stomach. She was not about to do this again right now. “I am not a pet!”
“Okay, okay, yeesh,” Stanley said, throwing his hands up. “Sore subject, I see.”
“We were… friends,” Jay said cautiously. “He respected me. I think.”
“You think?” Stanley laughed. “Oh, I’m sure he did. He loves listening to other people. Especially when they’re the size of a doll.”
Jay felt the tears welling up in her eyes, but pushed past it. There were more pressing matters at hand than her feelings. “Where… where is Ford? What happened?”
Stanley froze, like all his bodily control was stolen from him. For a moment, he stared off into the distance, something flashing before his eyes that only he could see. If Jay didn’t know any better, she’d almost say he looked… embarrassed.
“I – he – we got into a fight,” Stanley said, hanging his head a bit. “One second, he was here, and the next, some wacky machine turns on and he’s bein’ pulled right into it! And I can’t get it back on, because in case you haven’t noticed, I’m the handsome twin, not the nerdy twin. So either you help me get this thing back on or I’ll–”
“Wait wait wait. He went through?”
“What, are your tiny ears incapable of hearing? That's what I just said!” Stanley cried.
Jay felt like she was going to throw up. Fiddleford walked out on site from what he saw inside that portal, and Ford went mad trying to make sure it was never used again. If he got pulled through…
“...he might not even be alive,” Jay whispered, her voice trembling as violently as her body.
Stanley leaned in, causing Jay to recoil. “What? You’re gonna have to talk louder than that, pipsqueak. I can barely hear you.”
“I said HE MIGHT BE DEAD!”
For a moment, Stanley’s face remained stoic. But it soon twisted into a cocktail of sadness, rage and annoyance, his eyes practically glowing red, staring straight through Jay’s soul.
Jay tensed up. Maybe that was a bad idea.
“What did you say?”
“Nothing. F-forget I said anything,” Jay stammered, holding her hands up. She retreated – as if there was anywhere she could go. Stanley could kill her in 10,000 different ways, and she didn’t even want to speculate about any of them.
But instead of taking the jar, Stanley just sighed. “That’s right, tiny. I don’t wanna hear any of that. My brother may be the biggest pain in the ass I’ve ever known, but he is one tough son of a bitch and there is no way some – stupid gadget killed him!”
Jay opened her mouth, but stopped. Something piqued her interest.
“How… how much do you know about the portal?”
Stanley glared at her. “Nothing. That’s why I’ve resorted to asking some half-baked person to help me.”
“No, I mean… did Ford tell you anything about what it does?”
“Yeah,” Stanley said, though he sounded unsure. “Something about a universal gateway into unfathomable knowledge, blah blah, boring nerd stuff. Look, it doesn’t matter, just – tell me how to get it back on already, will ya?!”
“I don’t–!” Jay started to yell, but she took a breath. She couldn’t lose her cool. “I was here – around – I would watch when Ford and Fidds were working on it, but it’s not like I understood any of it.” Jay shut her eyes, waiting for blowback, some kind of retaliation. But it never came. Stanley just stared at her, eyes shaking. “Besides, if you only have one journal, you can’t… Ford wrote three journals, see, and they have to be combined to build it. Sort of a failsafe thing. Do you have the others?”
Stanley shook his head. “He told me he buried them or something. He didn’t want to turn that thing back on, I – I don’t even know what happened.”
There was a long stretch of silence after that. The two of them just stared at each other, unmoving. It was hard for Jay to put all the pieces together based on the limited useful information Ford told her after Fidds quit, but one thing was crystal clear – that portal should be shut down at all costs. Ford kept saying he was tricked, and using the portal again would destroy the universe. Jay believed him, too, because the kind of stuff he got himself into always seemed bigger than themselves. If Ford actually was taken through the portal, then that means it was turned on… and the universe was still here. No mass destruction, no end of humanity, no triangles. Everything seemed to be okay… except for the noticeable lack of Ford.
Ford. The first human she had ever talked to; one of the only beings on earth she considered to be her friend. Sure, he was obsessive, invasive and sometimes lacked humanity… but he was also protective, curious and caring of her. Jay hadn’t had to hunt for food in a year. She had unlimited access to cold, clean water. The worst thing she had to endure was Ford’s endless stream of questions and experiments, but it was a trade she’d make 100 times out of 100 if it meant sustenance, shelter and safety for the rest of her life.
Above all, Ford trusted her. He would let her watch other experiments, take her on trips, and even contribute to brainstorming sessions. She would listen quietly as Ford and Fidds reminisced about their Backupsmore days and the things they would do to change the world. She felt part of it all. Ford made her feel part of it all.
So what would he want her to do, right now, in this moment? He would never want to put himself above the safety of humanity; not once he found out what Bill was really up to. He would rather spend a thousand years in another dimension than risk the safety of this one. Maybe the portal didn’t do anything this time, but would they be so lucky again? Something told her no. Maybe there was a reason Ford didn’t talk to his brother anymore. Maybe he was just reckless. With Fidds and Ford both gone now… it really was up to her to keep everyone safe.
Jay sighed, realizing she needed to say something before Stanley shook her around again. “Look, even if I – even if I wanted to, you need those other journals, and I – I don’t really understand all that mechanical stuff. I’m… I’m sorry, Stanley. I don’t know how to turn it back on.”
Stanley said nothing. Jay gulped. Oh, boy, he was mad.
“I – I just mean – I can’t –”
“What do you mean, even if you wanted to?”
Jay paused. The temperature in the room seemed to drop 20 degrees. “I– well–”
“My brother is trapped on the other side of some – some – some inter-dimensional weirdness, and you don’t even want to get him back?”
“That’s not – I didn’t mean –”
But she didn’t get to finish her sentence as Stanley grabbed the jar off the table, throwing Jay to the back of the glass again. “Listen to this, tiny! I don’t care what some half-pint wants! He’s my family! And if you’re not going to help me get him back, then – then you’re useless to me!”
“Wait, Stanley, come on, I –”
“And stop saying my name as if we’re on the same level here! You’re just some – some – some thing my brother happened to find interesting. You don’t know anything about Ford!”
“You’re one to talk, considering I’ve spent more time with him in the last year than you have for the last 10!”
All the oxygen in the room seemed to evaporate. Jay didn’t mean to say that, not really – sure, it’s how she felt, but she didn’t want to say it out loud. Maybe Stanley didn’t hear her. Maybe he wouldn’t even care. Maybe he’d just say you’re right and come to his senses.
Maybe not.
It was perhaps scarier that Stanley didn’t say anything in response. Instead, he simply blinked a few times, took a few breaths, then got moving.
He didn’t know where he was going, just that he wanted to be anywhere but here right now, talking to anyone but – but – damn it, he didn’t even know her name. It didn’t matter. This stupid little thing was right about one thing – she’d spoken to his brother more in the last week than he had for a decade. What did Stan do to deserve this? Just because he broke his dumb brother’s dumb science project back in high school? And just when he was hopeful Ford was ready to turn the page, they got right back into it – and now he was gone, with no way to come back.
He glanced down at the impossibly small figure in the jar. How was this even possible? He didn’t think any of that fairy tale folk junk was real. And Ford would befriend it, too. They probably forged some weird bond over being weird.
Deep down, Stan felt bad. He barely knew this little guy, and he didn’t really have a right to keep them trapped. But right now, he was pissed off and feeling irrational. The more he stared at this tiny being, the more it reminded him of everything he lost with Ford.
So he found the highest shelf and stuck the jar up there.
“HEY! ARE YOU KIDDING ME! HEY!!!” Jay kicked at the glass, as if that would do anything. “YOU CAN’T LEAVE ME UP HERE!”
“I can do whatever the hell I want, pipsqueak,” Stanley mumbled, not even bothering to look her in the eye. In an instant, he was gone, head down and hands shoved in his pockets. He had work to do.
“STANLEY!!!!” Jay gave it one more try, but it was no use. Okay, don’t panic. You’ve been in worse situations. Maybe I can just push the glass off the shelf. Jay slammed her body onto the side of the jar until she became numb. It barely moved an inch. Okay, maybe if I… no, that won’t work. Or I can… no, that won’t do either. What if… if… if…
“If,” Jay sighed out loud, her legs crumbling beneath her. She was trapped. Stanley wasn’t coming back to let her out. Ford wasn’t coming back at all. She would die here. What first, starvation? Dehydration? Oxygen deprivation? It was all the same to her at this point.
Truthfully, she didn’t know how much time passed. The low light of the bunker was the same any time of day, and she never saw Stanley pass by, so either it had only been a few hours or Stanley was working nonstop for days. The whirlwind of everything had finally caught up to her, and the cool glass of the jar felt nice when she laid down and stretched her body out. There’s not much I can do right now. I’ll think of something later…
The second she closed her eyes, she passed out.

authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers. Let’s spread the self-love❤
Yayy! Thanks Mary! <3 After agonizing it for a while, my top 5:
The Real World (Mob Psycho 100, post-Mogami arc) is absolutely my favorite fic I've ever written. It's some of my best prose, I'm really pleased with how concise and focused I was able to keep it despite touching on so many characters, and it let me distill down a lot of my thoughts on the themes of the show and why it's so important to me. And I wrote it during the absolute worst stretch of the curse, painstaking sentence by painstaking sentence over the course of half a year. I am so so so proud of it.
Fisherman's Knot (Gravity Falls, post-canon fic focusing on the Stans, their deeply-entrenched mental health issues, and their eventual recovery. Also there are selkies.) At 104k words, the longest piece of writing I've ever finished. Writing it was a journey; I took a long break but I'm so happy and proud that I managed to come back and finish it and that there were still people who were as excited as I was to get to the end. The response to this fic blew me away; it started out largely as a coping mechanism to deal with my own poorly-treated mental illness and I feel really honored that my writing resonated with so many people dealing with similar things. I grew so much as a writer over the course of it. Both the big moments of catharsis--Stan's glitter and Ford's realization by the harbor--were things that were so powerful and electric in my head that I worried I wouldn't be able to put them down in words that did the feelings justice, but I did!
Bloom (Discworld, a Glorious 25th of May fic set a few years after Night Watch) Everyone who sets out to write a Discworld fic is undertaking an extreme act of hubris, because not only are you trying to emulate a specific writing style, you're trying to write like Terry Pratchett, which as we all know is basically impossible. Still, I think I hit some good resonant Discworldy notes in this little piece and really nailed the Themes I was going for. Periodically the Tumblr post version gets a little burst of notes and it always makes me really happy that people are enjoying it.
First And Final Orders (Mob Psycho 100, Dimple character study) Hi. Have you heard of ring composition? I love ring composition. It is my single favorite literary device (and I love a LOT of literary devices), so I had to include one of my fics that makes heavy use of it. I also love pointing at a piece of media and going "Hey. Hey have you thought about how there's kind of some Discworld themes here? What if we thought about the Discworld themes together?" And ALSO i love DIMPLE!!! I hope this fic helps explain why.
Casualties (Gravity Falls, missing scene from the finale) So the reason this fic makes this list isn't so much its quality (though I do still really like it!) but the fact that it was my first-ever completed fanfiction. I'd idly poked at the idea of writing fic a couple times before but never made much progress. I hadn't actually done any creative writing for years at that point. I came to fandom late due to a combination of being scared of the internet and, when I did check out my real-life friends' fandom blogs, feeling like everything was so focused on shipping that there would be no place for me and the kinds of stories I cared about. Gravity Falls changed that. I'd made friends and felt like part of a community for the first time. I'd read fanfic that I loved and that focused on the sorts of relationships I really cared about. And so finally I decided that even though it still felt really scary, maybe I would try my hand at actually writing and posting a fic of my own.
360,000 words and 54 works later, I still think it was a pretty good idea.

Hello! I found your post about being an ex-anti giving advice to new ex-antis, and I was just wondering if you would be willing to share your story with me. ^-^ I've been wanting to understand what actually goes into anti beliefs. I understand if it's too personal though. Have a good day either way!
oh!! im sorry, you sent this ask ages ago and i never saw it appear in my inbox. i'm still going to answer but i am really sorry that i never got around to it until now.
essentially, i grew up on tumblr in an intersection of progressive spaces and cartoon fandom spaces. at some point these two things meshed together and i became interested in looking at fandom through a lens of media criticism. i was a young teenager at the time. at some point i entered the gravity falls fandom and read many, many posts about the dangers of proshipping due to the existence of certain ships within the fandom, and being a young, impressionable teenager, i fell for it hook line and sinker. it was the Right way to think, it was the Virtuous way to think. otherwise, could i really call myself progressive while defending something that appeared harm marginalized groups?
(at the time i had undiagnosed ocd which definitely impacted my opinions and fear of thought crimes)
for a time i used anti rhetoric to police myself and others. but... honestly, much of the rhetoric didnt ring true to me even at the time. and as much as i hate to admit it, i wanted to use it as a method of control, which i am not proud of. i cut off real life friends because of it and i still mourn those losses. i ended up angry and isolated except for other bitter, neurotic antis
later on as an adult, i started listening to people in proship spaces (especially people who had been victims of callouts that had ruined their lives and jobs in the animation industry), at first out of curiosity, but then things started clicking into place for me. why IS it that the people being called out for shipping and "bad" kinks are always queer people who have done nothing else to garner that level of hatred? why IS it that engaging in and creating transgressive art is seen as a valid coping mechanism by therapists? it made more sense than any arguments i'd listened to that were written by antis.
so to sum it up, i just... changed my opinion due to finding evidence that contradicted my beliefs and weighing my options. being proship won out in the end. and i had a lot of help from my partner as well, because they're also proship. they helped me work through a hell of a lot of moral ocd and to unpack the reasons why i had fallen for anti rhetoric in the past. honestly they've been a life saver in this matter
thanks for the ask and again, sorry for the insanely late response. i dont use social media often anymore and this slipped into my inbox unnoticed.. ^^;

They lierally weren't in a relationship. It's implied by the ganon awakening memory and her own diary and other dislogue she never actually proposed by chickened out. Why would she gasp seeing Link staring at Zelda if he was actually engaged to mipha? Media literacy dead
I just want to say congratulations to the Gravity Falls fandom. After nearly twelve years on tumblr and a truly staggering amount of blocked fans and admittedly incendiary posts on my part not a single one of you verifiably went on anon to get around a block and into my ask box. Not even that time I opened up about my personal family issues and got attacked for it by dozens of people. Everyone who got blocked stayed blocked. In fact, no one from any of the circles I post in has ever done this, hence why I'm even dignifying this ask from a pathetic individual who ships like they're an adult Harry Potter fan with a response: to commemorate the occasion.
In this time of mass exodus due to racism and transphobia from staff as well as our user data being sold to an ai model which will immediately die the moment it tries to train itself with it, it's wonderful to know that there are still parts of the true tumblr experience that I too can take part in, and that despite tumblr's waning growth and popularity, despite my own waning time on this site, when I do eventually log off for the final time I'll be able to rest easy, knowing that I truly was a part of this community... And knowing that the part of the community I primarily interacted with during the bulk of my time here, despite a brief period filled with completely untagged old man incest porn in the main character tags, never pulled this shit, and never got to the point where every third post in a given ship tag was a complaint, about random bullshit that doesn't matter and isn't actually something anyone was mad at in the first place.
Truly it would cheapen the experience, to complain about a bunch of unrelated topics, characters, and ships you don't like, in the tags of a ship that you do actually like, to the point where someone going into that tag looking for shipping content of the ship they like has to deal with a bunch of annoying crap that isn't shipping content and is rude to other people for no fucking reason.
The humble vagueblog has existed as a vital part of your fandom's existence since the beginning, dear Gravity Falls fandom, and you have used and honed the practice well. Your tags have not been infested with pages of unrelated crap from a new set of people very week who think the rest of us enjoy them spamtagging their complaints, and our tags have not been infected with people who don't like what's being posted in that tag posting in the tag anyways about how much they dislike the content of the tag they're posting in. All the porn is now tagged properly and no one is freaking out about people who don't ship their ship, not even when that ship consists of two characters who are at the same developmental stage for their respective species, and are not related to each other. As the fandom of a children's show from 2010s era tumblr you have truly exceeded all expectations. Gaze upon this ask, on this shadow of a shark beneath our little rowboat and know that I thank you, and that if and when I do eventually leave this site I will leave satisfied. Know that if there ever comes a time where I begin posting zelink content full time, I will be in hell trying to block annoying assholes all over again, because every third post in the zelink tag is made by someone like this who clearly has nothing better to do with their time than complain about a naked fish lady who is dead and does not interfere with the ships they actually like because she's not real and you don't have to include her in your fic or engage with the people who like her if you don't want to.
Because obviously the zelink ship tag is the only place one can complain about a fictional teenage dolphin with boobs being in a relationship with a fictional teenage human, and obviously a fictional dolphin with boobs is the biggest problem this fandom has so someone has to say something, it'd be rude not to tag this Voltron fandom level bullshit as zelink.

Anonymous asked: genuine question: if I, knowing full well that torture is bad and irl torture isn't actually effective etc etc etc, write a torture/whump fic with 10 reads and one comment on wattpad, how am I a torture apologist
writing torture in and of itself isn't apologia, obviously it depends on how you choose to portray it. the reach of your writing is beyond irrelevant. 5 readers, 100 readers, 5000 readers, i don't really care, if you implicitly justify torture in your writing, i'm gonna criticise you for doing that
Anonymous asked: (same anon as (presumably, idk how bombarded your inbox is) previous ask but I forgot to mention some things) 1. the point of the "10 reads and one comment wattpad story" example was to imply that almost no one reads it and the people who do will probably be my tumblr mutuals and not, say, the us government (which i meant to mention explicitly but left out) 2. being critical of fandom spaces and what we may be endorsing is absolutely a discussion that can and should happen imo, especially in this one, but where do we draw the line? because yeah while we should think critically about what's being promoted if we write about torture, as you mentioned in your own words, hannibal isn't endorsing cannibalism. Seeing that "this thing is bad irl and we need to talk about why we like seeing depictions of it to make sure we aren't endorsing it in real life or negatively affecting people" isn't a discussion I've seen happen in every fandom, I would go out on a very careful limb and say that it's not a discussion that *needs* to happen in *every* fandom - there's plenty of gravity falls fanfiction out there, a lot of which grunkle stan is probably being his usual crime-endorsing self in, and I could be wrong, but I don't think that's encouraging crime irl in any significant way. While "cartoon show aimed at children" and "fiction about torture" are certainly two extreme ends of the spectrum, I believe they do show that the line for "we need to have critical discussions about the themes in here" lies somewhere, so... where does it lie?
for the first one:
so... i can't criticise your writing because you're not writing for the government? listen to yourself dude, you couldn't move the goalposts farther if you tried
for the second:
hannibal depicts cannibalism without justifying it. i havent seen gravity falls but i bet it doesn't justify crime. i'm not criticising you for simply depicting torture. i'm not even criticising you for liking fictional depictions of torture. i'm critical of how you depict it.
i don't think you know what a theme is. having a character who endorses immoral things isn't a literary theme, that's just character motivation. it's when the story itself endorses those immoral things that it becomes an issue. and with torture, what qualifies as endorsement just doesn't come down to "torture is good", the far more insidious idea is "torture is useful". you can portray torture as a bad thing, but if it's portrayed as bad but useful, i'd still qualify it as apologia.
where do we draw the line? well, we could look at which myths and cultural ideas surrounding torture actually cause harm irl, and then avoid slapping a stamp of approval on those. i'd say that's a pretty reasonable place to start

It's unfair that you're being blocked by many in this fandom‚ billford isn't close to proship and I think the term has lost a lot of it's original meaning. There are many more serious‚ concerning 'ships' in this fandom and for some reason people choose to worry about one that is nowhere near as terrible.
Fiddauthor is also problematic in a way‚ yet it's one of the most popular ships right now‚ and of course nothing wrong with it! Media will be problematic‚ which inherently makes ships in itself a little problematic. I mean... Fiddleford cheating on his wife is problematic‚ lmao
Billford in itself isn't a proship‚ but I think because a lot of people who consider themselves proship ship it‚ it gains a weird rep.
I believe a lot of it comes from not wanting to lose mutuals with a lot of the more bigger blogs. Whether you decide to leave tumblr or not‚ there's a lot of people that love your art.
It's mostly the bigger artists that block me, I suppose the reblogger and fanfic blogs don't care as much? It's all very upsetting because I don't want to get upset in the first place! I get very intensely anxious and I'm sure my failures to communicate have contributed to people getting a "bad vibe" from me regardless of what fandom opinions I have. T ^ T
I don't want to blame anyone but I feel an oppressive fog in the air, whenever I scroll through gravity falls related posts. People have gotten so fuxking rude and mean lately. And all I can do is whinge about it.
I know this is entirely my problem, but then people reply recounting similar experiences so that tells me something's up. It's all so tiring.
It takes something that's supposed to be fun and twists it into a mean popularity contest, where irony and bitterness seem to get more attention.
Or perhaps that's just my experience, as one of the people with the "wrong opinions". Like a one sided mirror?

i really don’t understand Disney, gay and trans is bad for children to them somehow but showing kids violence acts of murder, racism, sexism, and colorism isn’t? like i even heard that dipper from gravity falls was supposed to be trans but Disney denied it, that’s also why the owl house is gonna get canceled because there is a canon non binary character and a canon lesbian couple, i don’t see what is wrong with having gay and trans characters in cartoons? shouldn’t it be ok to show kids that stuff so they know that people are different? like Disney shows characters who are different religions (jewish, muslim etc.) like if we should teach kids there are poc people and different religions shouldn’t we also teach them that gay and trans people exist too?
I'm not sure where you get the idea of Dipper is trans as I also watched the show and barely see any signs, hints, or implications of it. But that's my jaded thinking of liking the characters as they are and only hate it if shitty writing makes them so. And it should be obvious the reasons for it is money. How can you air a TV show about LGBT to places like China, Middle East, Russia, and other countries that don't have the same beliefs as the Western? The same applies to things like manga, video games, and anime. Either they have to change it to make the other countries happy. And God knows shitty localization is already doing that with manga/anime/video games when being translated from Japan. Or bite the bullet and hope sales back them up and not be threatened by others, both in the Western and international countries. You should already know Disney is not a saint and is just another corporate among corporates. And people still follow them like sheep just because they show off one or two LGBT shows/movies and Disney claim to respect them every June, only for them to fall back and shit on them by canceling them and taking down the new shitty rainbow colored avatar on Twitter once July hits. People claim they want to show diversity, but don't do shit about the oppressive countries like parts in South America and Africa that ban that shit in the first place. They are better off preaching about it on Twitter or Tumblr blog than pay $1k+ of airline fee and hotel to travel to another poorer country, only be be killed in Saudi Arabia in an attempt to show homosexuality and lesbians are good.

Hi! I have used canes/crutches/and wheelchairs off and on for the last 8 years. I am not a trained medical expert this is just my experience. I generally have used canes the most. I have used every style of cane handle and base including sword cane. (It has a dragon head as the handle, I only pull it out for fancy occasions or if I can get away with wearing gloves)
I almost exclusively use small backpacks for bags due to the ugliness and smallnes of fanny packs and the fact that over the shoulder bags can and will make your life a living hell. And pockets are a laugh.
I have worn canes with heels but I always feel like I'm being judged and often it does aggravate my reason for my mobility device.
Those terrain attachments can go on both canes and crutches and if your character is in a snowy icey place any mobility device user will call bullshit on you art if they don't have it. And if it does then it will make them feel so seen. Also I did not know they were a thing until after living somewhere notoriously icey for at least a month. I don't even remember how I found them but it was not a medical professional who told me because most of them are abilied people who don't have to know. Art with them on there will help the disabled community a lot.
Another thing op touched on is your character has one hand. They will have an active priority list for what it does. Are they scrolling Tumblr? Is it early morning and they are ignoring their phone because coffee is the only thing that is important at this unholy hour of 6 am? If it's raining they will opt for rain coats/garb over umbrellas because umbrella means no hands.
Deadass I wanna see a cane user in an umbrella hat now. I need Kaz brekker fan art of this immediately.
If it's not the quad base your cane will end up on the floor often. It slides and slips and falls. If you have a friend with you they will often pick it up for you. Strangers will also do the same. Sometimes based on your pain level you will do weird things will your bum leg while you bend over to pick it up. You will always though, pick it up at the end of whatever you are doing that cause you to put it down in the first place. I lean my cane on the desk to sort papers with both hands. Gravity happens. You just kinda stare at it and roll your eyes and then keep sorting papers. When you have finished Task you will then pick up the cane. You do this because the first time it bit the dust and you immediately picked it up it fell back down almost immediately and if it has a sense of humor it will just go the opposite way.
I have plenty more advice and would love to answer questions!
A general cane guide for writers and artists (from a cane user, writer, and artist!)
Disclaimer: Though I have been using a cane for 6 years, I am not a doctor, nor am I by any means an expert. This guide is true to my experience, but there are as many ways to use a cane as there are cane users!
This guide will not include: White canes for blindness, crutches, walkers, or wheelchairs as I have no personal experience with these.
This is meant to be a general guide to get you started and avoid some common mishaps/misconceptions, but you absolutely should continue to do your own research outside of this guide!
Tumblr media
The biggest recurring problem I've seen is using the cane on the wrong side. The cane goes on the opposite side of the pain! If your character has even-sided pain or needs it for balance/weakness, then use the cane in the non-dominant hand to keep the dominant hand free. Some cane users also switch sides to give their arm a rest!
A cane takes about 20% of your weight off the opposite leg. It should fit within your natural gait and become something of an extension of your body. If you need more weight off than 20%, then crutches, a walker, or a wheelchair is needed.
Putting more pressure on the cane, using it on the wrong side, or having it at the wrong height will make it less effective, and can cause long term damage to your body from improper pressure and posture. (Hugh Laurie genuinely hurt his body from years of using a cane wrong on House!)
Tumblr media
(an animated GIF of a cane matching the natural walking gait. It turns red when pressure is placed on it.)
When going up and down stairs, there is an ideal standard: You want to use the handrail and the cane at the same time, or prioritize the handrail if it's only on one side. When going up stairs you lead with your good leg and follow with the cane and hurt leg together. When going down stairs you lead with the cane, then the good leg, and THEN the leg that needs help.
Realistically though, many people don't move out of the way for cane users to access the railing, many stairs don't have railings, and many are wet, rusty, or generally not ideal to grip.
In these cases, if you have a friend nearby, holding on to them is a good idea. Or, take it one step at a time carefully if you're alone.
Now we come to a very common mistake I see... Using fashion canes for medical use!
Tumblr media
(These are 4 broad shapes, but there is INCREDIBLE variation in cane handles. Research heavily what will be best for your character's specific needs!)
The handle is the contact point for all the weight you're putting on your cane, and that pressure is being put onto your hand, wrist, and shoulder. So the shape is very important for long term use!
Knob handles (and very decorative handles) are not used for medical use for this reason. It adds extra stress to the body and can damage your hand to put constant pressure onto these painful shapes.
The weight of a cane is also incredibly important, as a heavier cane will cause wear on your body much faster. When you're using it all day, it gets heavy fast! If your character struggles with weakness, then they won't want a heavy cane if they can help it!
This is also part of why sword canes aren't usually very viable for medical use (along with them usually being knob handles) is that swords are extra weight!
However, a small knife or perhaps a retractable blade hidden within the base might be viable even for weak characters.
Tumblr media
Bases have a lot of variability as well, and the modern standard is generally adjustable bases. Adjustable canes are very handy if your character regularly changes shoe height, for instance (gotta keep the height at your hip!)
Canes help on most terrain with their standard base and structure. But for some terrain, you might want a different base, or to forego the cane entirely! This article covers it pretty well.
Many cane users decorate their canes! Stickers are incredibly common, and painting canes is relatively common as well! You'll also see people replacing the standard wrist strap with a personalized one, or even adding a small charm to the ring the strap connects to. (nothing too large, or it gets annoying as the cane is swinging around everywhere)
Tumblr media
(my canes, for reference)
If your character uses a cane full time, then they might also have multiple canes that look different aesthetically to match their outfits!
When it comes to practical things outside of the cane, you reasonably only have one hand available while it's being used. Many people will hook their cane onto their arm or let it dangle on the strap (if they have one) while using their cane arm, but it's often significantly less convenient than 2 hands. But, if you need 2 hands, then it's either setting the cane down or letting it hang!
For this reason, optimizing one handed use is ideal! Keeping bags/items on the side of your free hand helps keep your items accessible.
Tumblr media
When sitting, the cane either leans against a wall or table, goes under the chair, or hooks onto the back of the chair. (It often falls when hanging off of a chair, in my experience)
When getting up, the user will either use their cane to help them balance/support as they stand, or get up and then grab their cane. This depends on what it's being used for (balance vs pain when walking, for instance!)
That's everything I can think of for now. Thank you for reading my long-but-absolutely-not-comprehensive list of things to keep in mind when writing or drawing a cane user!
Happy disability pride month! Go forth and make more characters use canes!!!

To My Dearest Feathers,
I don't know why I'm doing this. Why I made a tumblr specifically for this. Why I'm addressing this journal to you. I guess it's just easier to write things down when I pretend somebody still cares enough to read it. And considering most of the stuff on my mind recently is you, your name just kind of became the default.
I probably shouldn't even address it as 'my' dearest Feathers... You aren't mine anymore, after all. Doesn't change the fact that you're still the dearest thing to me, though. It's been a month and a half since you left and yet you still effect everything I do. Everything I think.
Everything just makes me sad now. There isn't a part of my life you didn't touch. I can't even finish watching Gravity Falls or Adventure Time. Can't listen to The Adventure Zone. Can't bring myself to listen to The Magnus Protocol, simply because you were the entire reason I even listened to The Magnus Archives in the first place. I've been trying to watch Hazbin Hotel but honestly that somehow reminds me of you, too. Even animals make me sad now...
Work has been... stressful. I nearly lost my job the day you left. I couldn't focus enough to hit the target productivity. I've finally managed to get it above goal the past couple of weekends, but it was difficult. You were always good at hyping me up and making me proud of my accomplishments... Now it's just another day at work.
I've lost some weight. I guess that's a good thing. I don't know if it's due to all of the walking at work, or because I cut back on soda and have been drinking more water, or if it's honestly just the stress. But I hope it's not the last one. You would've been proud of me, I hope...
I bought myself a giant stuffed animal for Valentine's Day. The tag said it's a brown dog, but I personally think it's a fox, and everyone who's seen it agrees. I hope it's a fox, anyway... Then I can pretend it doesn't remind me of Alouis sometimes. It was a treat for myself... something I can snuggle without constantly thinking of you. I haven't bothered to name it. You were always better at coming up with names for them...
Amy won't come out of her room. I don't really blame her. The one time she did she ended up seeing a post of artwork of Lois Lane and Superman... Needless to say she went back inside and hasn't come out since. Andy's making sure she still takes care of herself... Not like they're doing the same for themselves.
I hope you're doing well. I really do. Sometimes I wonder if you ever actually loved me... If you ever even cared at all. Honestly I'm kind of hoping you didn't... I wouldn't wish this heartache on you. Is that stupid of me? To hope that you leaving didn't also hurt you, like it did me? Am I supposed to be angry at you for leaving? I guess I am, sometimes... But more often than not I'm just sad, or numb. I just wish I could stop crying. Could enjoy the things I used to, without remembering that you are the reason I even partook in them. But it isn't that simple to move on. To forget.
Anyway... I doubt you'll ever see this. But if you do, you can always come back. You know me... I'm a bleeding heart. I will always be here when you need me. You know where to find me if you change your mind.
Love Always,
Laz

ursa minor, hercules, corvus, orion, gemini, riegel, betelgeuse, agena, proxima centauri, algol, sirius a/b... Hey Leo!! I noticed no one sent you any asks for this, so I'm changing that.. Hope you have a wonderful day!
!!!! Aw, thank you so much, Stormy! <3 :^) I hope you’re having a wonderful day, too!  Ursa minor: do you have hobbies or interests that no one knows about? Hmm, I mean I like to draw, write, and read, but most people probably know that lol. I like to sew and embroider!!  Hercules: how are you with people? who is your favourite person? I’m kind of a people-person but only when sometimes and usually just when it’s Required lol,, I’d rather just do my own thing. On tumblr I like to talk to people and interact, though! My favorite people are uhh my two closest in-person friends Caitlin and Alex and my mom!!  Corvus: what are 5 things you appreciate about yourself? Oh boy lol hhghgh 1. My ability to lead and take action when others won’t 2. I think I’m kinda funny sometimes?? Idk 3. I encourage others and try to be a reliable, kind person 4. I’m open-minded and consider multiple sides of most things/issues (except human rights like <3 no @ anyone who thinks certain humans don’t deserve equity) 5. ???? I can’t think of a fifth thing, sorry Orion: what element would you like to be able to bend? For sure either fire or water, but earth and air are cool too Gemini: which character (fictional or not) is your spirit animal? Y’all already know the answer is Sasuke 😔 but also Mabel from Gravity Falls Riegel: put your music on shuffle and give us the first five songs 1. I’m Like a Lawyer With the Way... by Fall Out Boy (longer title lol)  2. Come Hang Out by AJR 3. No Boy, No Cry (Naruto’s 6th Opening) 4. 30 by Badflower 5. Trees by Twenty One Pilots Betelgeuse: which video games gives you nostalgia for a place you have never been to? The other day I played Naruto: Road to Ninja (for the DS) for the first time in years and it was super nostalgic because that was the first game I personally owned. Also,,, Poptropica (an in-browser game) and Fantage (before it shut down) give me nostalgia! Pokemon games, too.  Agena: what is your favourite moment from a game? I haven’t even played them, but I really like a lot of moments from Fran Bow and Undertale. Like, Sans standing in the grandesque, empty hallway, ready to fight you? 1000/10. I feel like there are better examples but I can’t think of them right now.  Proxima centauri: if you would have the chance to travel the world, which places or countries would you like to see? If I had an unlimited amount of destinations, I’d want to go everywhere. I love learning about other cultures and would love to see everything there is to see. But, in general, the places I most would want to visit are Japan, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Canada,,,, uhhh in the US to like California and Washington and Utah for one very specific reason and Florida and Maine and-- just a lot of places lol Algol: you have to assassinate someone. which weapon do you choose? Do I have to be sneaky about it? If so, probably poison.  Sirius a/b: what’s your favourite sound and smell? I really like the smell of campfires/bonfires (wood burning)! And sounds,,, I’m not sure? The sounds when you’re first walking up to an amusement park, I guess :0  I appreciate you sending so many, Stormy :’^)) thank you for the asks!!! <3

1) Feel free to keep rambling! Not only I love talking with level-headed fandom people, but our opinions seem to converge (even if my wording comes off as weird/wrong because of Tumblr's word limit). Anyway. I had many issues with S2, besides Serena's arc I mean (I'll get back to her). Blessed be the goddamned plotholes! Fred becomes a cockroach that just won't die (Red Center), because he's essential to the plot. Same goes for Aunt Lydia. (Although I'm kinda glad that she's alive, because
2) I LOVE Dowd’s acting and I’m excited about her background story.) Emily comes back from the Colonies and is smfh 100% healthy. Moreover, Gilead has been surprisingly lenient with Fred and Serena’s constant fuckups in S2 (mutilated fingers aside). June won’t leave with Emily, bc MOTHERHOOD (more like there’s a s3 on the horizon and drama is needed). And don’t get me started on that slow pace. The beginning and the finale were explosive of course, but some mid-season episodes?
3) They were dragging on and on. Examples? 2x11, where only 2 things happen: a) June gives birth to Nicole, b) Fred and Serena make it clear that they want to tear each other apart (duh). The only redeeming qualities of that episode was the wolf symbolism and the excellent cinematography. I get it, the series is successful and has more seasons ahead. But if only they had squeezed some episodes, it would have been so much better.
—-
OMG YAY!!! I’m gonna answer these in pieces since I’ll prolly flood a giant essay otherwise. Cos, lbr, if I didn’t know better, I’d swear I had multiple personalities and was secretly sending these to myself from a fugue state, that’s how much we agree! Cos I’ve just read through all your messages and sat here going “YES! YES!” lol. I think you, me, maybe 5 other people on tumblr, and 1 TV reviewer are of the same mindset and it’s such a relief to find others who are reasonable and critical about the show/Serena.
Yes, Fred not dying was just so fucking stupid I couldn’t deal. Like, it’s not even like, “Well, he didn’t die which is crazy but he’s horribly injured and disfigured cos I dunno, he was like 15 feet FROM A MASSIVE BOMB EXPLODING.” But noooo. Instead we get Fred in hospital with a scratchy throat for like a few weeks, and when he comes back he’s got a little bit of a limp. No burns, nothing. And, to top it off, he’s got all the strength and balance of a perfectly healthy man to whip the shit out of his wife. I get they needed to get him out of the way and out of service so Serena and June could have all sorts of treasonous hi-jinks together but surely… they could have considered having Fred not 15 feet from the bomb. It killed handmaids that were way farther away than that. Just a thought. Deffo an eye-roll moment.
Aunt Lydia I’m less irritated about simply cos, like you, I love Ann Dowd and think she’s done a fab job. And we honestly haven’t got enough of her backstory and I wanna know that too. I think this show can only really captivate if it tells ALL the women’s stories, not just the victims. Like how does a woman become an Aunt? How do they justify that? Or is it simply a type of socio-religio-politcal brainwashing, akin to a lot of Nazi Party supporters? Is she a True Believer? Like, honestly, wtf is up with her? Like, cos so many of us can empathise with the Handmaids and we understand how that came about–but it takes more sides to tell a full story. So, Aunt Lydia being back… I’m not too fussed about. I really do consider Emily so damaged that I would never trust her with a baby–but that’s me. She’s been so broken, so traumatized, and like I don’t blame her at all ofc, but she needs softness and patience and no stress ever again. Like, she is not well emotionally by any stretch.
Which leads into the Colonies bullshit. That was just really bad writing. She, Janine, etc, were there for MONTHS. Like, June ran away and was gone for 92 days (Thanks for that count, Serena!). And then add on whatever time passed between her being returned to the Waterfords house and when Lilly set off the bomb. That is a long ass time to be splashing about in radioactive waste. Emily’s teeth were falling out, right? Like, how she went from literally dying of radiation poisoning to “Totally healthy enough to pop out some totally healthy babies!” I’ll never understand. The loss of the Handmaids in the bombing isn’t a good enough reasoning. A dictatorship like Gilead could easily have just conscripted a bunch of Econowives with the sweep of a pen. That is how these militant theocracies work. They’re already half-indoctrinated anyway. It was dumb to put Emily and Janine there in the first place if you knew they had to come back, as they are main cast members.
I always thought Fred and Serena were getting away with too much but I wrote it off as Fred (and Serena lbr) being a HUGE part of bringing about Gilead in the first place so they get some leeway. But then, you see Warren and Cushing being dealt with fairly severely for basically hearsay. (Okay, Warren’s I get cos you had outcry from Janine in a massively public display and backup from Naomi.) I guess because Fred/Serena’s fuckups were a little more ~private, they could excuse/lie about them/cover them up them easier? Cushing was dealt with way to easily. Like… no. “Fred” signs some paper and suddenly Cushing is being disappeared immediately. I suppose Fred took over Pryce’s place in the hierarchy? Who knows. And from what I understand, nobody in SOJ knew about June’s escape to the big country house. But c’mon, one Handmaid kills herself, the new one another starting shit every where she goes with other Handmaids and is pals with two of the most notorious other Handmaids (Emily and Janine), then is “kidnapped”, is partners with the bomber, then runs away again, then again… Sigh.
June not leaving… I just… it was so obvious that she wouldn’t cos otherwise there is no show. But why bother with all that drama then. Like, what if Emily hadn’t been there??? June had no way of knowing she’d be meeting up with Emily. She would have just dumped Nicole in some van and run back? Ugh.
And the pace was bad. ITA. There are whole episodes I don’t even bother with on rewatches. I thought the season premiere was great, then it fell of a cliff and lost my interest until about the 5th episode? Then it got going nicely (altho 2x07 wasn’t great either), then took another nosedive in 2x10 and sort of coasted almost aimlessly until the finale. I don’t like to hate on June but honestly the really 100% June-centric episodes bore the shit out of me. 2x02/03 and 2x11 being the biggest culprits. I’m just tired of the excessive use of flashbacks that all basically say the same thing now. And Moss is a great actress but there’s such thing as too much of a good thing. Not to mention, Nick and June bore me to tears as well (SACRILEGE! Send the indignant rabid fangirls on a rampage into my inbox!) so when there’s a lot of focus on that clusterfuck of inanity, I tune out. I can’t help it. I find them so annoying lol. (Which is were I usually lose common ground with basically everyone in this fandom cos everyone loves Nick for some reason I just cannot understand. If you like him, I apologise! I just can’t. I liked him more at the beginning but as it’s gone on the less I give even the slightest shit about him.)
Also, like I found 2x02 and 2x03 to just be… a waste of time? Like, okay, we got to see the Econopeople and how they live or whatever but to me, there was zero point to the whole thing because we all know June isn’t going to get away with it. So, why waste 2 whole episodes building to something everyone knows ain’t happening just for the sake of some worldbuilding that I’m guessing could have been done some other more cogent way? 2x04 was basically just to show more breaking June down in various ways. Then 2x05 was just to show the Colonies and had a lot of filler in it about that. I still don’t understand the point of the “wedding” bits. It wasn’t uplifting or hopeful at all. It was still really dark, like killing the Wife. I only really liked watching Serena go apeshit because her babyslave isn’t making proper gossipy conversation. It’s just an interesting angle cos finally Serena gets what she asks for with a super obedient Offred, and low and behold, it actually sucks and she wants June back. Story of Serena’s life and she never fucking learns lol. And Aunt Lydia flexing on Serena was hilarious. I just enjoy watching them go head to head. Not to mention the grotesque child brides thing. Gross. Super gross. Like, a bunch of stuff happened but I’m not convinced it needed to be dragged out over 4 episodes like that. Not to mention it was all really depressing. I remember watching and going, “JESUS, this show is fucking depressing. Why am I torturing myself?”
But yeah, 2x11 was super slow and all the important things that happened (that you listed) could have taken 10 minutes. Like I get too that she had to see Hannah in order to… make her decision in the finale make sense??? Was that the reason? I still don’t know. All of this could have been dealt with way more quickly and with just as much emotional gravity had it been done well.
I really like Moira but she’s been given shit all to do. I liked how we got a little insight into her and Odette. A LITTLE. But a huge weakness is that the Toronto peeps are so divorced from the drama that it often seems, not pointless, but something like it. It definitely slows the pace down to a crawl. That’s why I thought 2x09 worked well because it married both worlds. (I will never understand why 1x07 exists the way it does. What a stupid episode. I do not care about Luke’s journey, tbh. I’m here for the women–good, evil, or inbetween; not an entire episode devoted to him–especially not when we could have had Moira’s instead. I accept that his is intertwined with June’s attempted escape but… meh. It’s just like I will never care about Nice Guy TM Nick’s backstory or character. I don’t care about Fred’s childhood, or Warren’s marriage, or Luke’s manbabying, or Nick’s manpain. Eek.)
I dunno. Personally I think it could have been tightened up a bit better. But again, what do I know? I’m just a viewer. I’m sure other viewers have completely the opposite opinion.
