What are your favorite books, and which books do you feel have been the most influential on your work? Do you read much non-fiction?
I watched all of School Days because of you. What do you like about it? How ironic is your enjoyment?
I am loving CQ thus far.
When I was very young, the books I read and reread again and again and which certainly had some formative impact on me as a writer were Loser by Jerry Spinelli and Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, but I think the most clearly influential books on my writing today are Franz Kafka's novels, The Castle and The Trial, as well as Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man. I first read all three of these novels as a teenager and they really unlocked the world of literature for me. All three depict ordinary landscapes as surreal nightmares, the way I would go on to depict the locations in Modern Cannibals and Cockatiel x Chameleon. Another work I read as a teen and which surely influenced me was King Lear by William Shakespeare. I've always been a fan of the bleak and tragic.
Other favorite literary works of mine include (in no particular order):
Moby-Dick by Herman Melville
VALIS by Philip K. Dick
Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys
Ulysses by James Joyce
Catch-22 by Joseph Heller
2666 by Roberto Bolaño
The Day of the Locust by Nathanael West
Nightwood by Djuna Barnes
Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad
The Crying of Lot 49 by Thomas Pynchon
Demons by Fyodor Dostoyevsky
Grendel by John Gardner
Paradise Lost by John Milton
As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner
The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle
As you can see, my reading is on the European and especially Anglo-centric side, which is probably to be expected given I primarily speak English myself. I'm always reading new stuff and try to branch out into time periods and locations outside of Western canon, especially given I've read most of the Western canon by now anyway.
I'm not a large reader of nonfiction. Fiction has always been my passion, since I was very young.
As for School Days, I want to stress that my enjoyment of it is in no way ironic. People ask me this all the time, but I legitimately just think School Days is excellent on its own merits. School Days is a detailed, complex psychological drama in which characters are pushed or push themselves into increasingly uglier directions based on initially small flaws or miscommunications that they are unable to overcome or grapple with. There's very little fat or filler in School Days, it is a lean work in which nearly every conversation has some kind of psychological subtext or is deepened by its context, and the pacing consistently pushes the story toward its explosive, tragic end. I recently watched Breaking Bad (also excellent) and found it similar in how an initially neutral or merely flawed protagonist gradually devolves into outright villainy on account of those flaws; other comparable works would be Nightcrawler, Taxi Driver, the aforementioned Wide Sargasso Sea, or Shakespeare's play Macbeth.
I think the overwhelming backlash about School Days is a byproduct of the Western anime culture back when it aired in 2007. This was just about when the internet was coming to prominence and Western viewers were able to access seasonal anime for the first time via fan subs and dubs; before this, anime watching in the West was either hack-n-slash dubs of kid's shows like Sailor Moon or Pokemon or isolated to a few select (and often Western-influenced) shows like Cowboy Bebop on late-night programs such as Adult Swim. Because of this, the Western anime community was fairly embryonic in 2007, comprised mainly of younger people, and almost entirely male. I don't think this audience collectively had the patience and comprehension skills to appreciate a dialogue-based psychological drama, and especially not one primarily concerned with digging into and exposing what we might nowadays call "toxic masculinity."
2007 was a year where "There are no women on the internet" was taken as an absolute truth, a pre-GamerGate era before even tepid incipient criticisms of sexism in gaming were being made by the likes of Extra Credits or Anita Sarkeesian. School Days, depicting a seeming everyman whose casual objectification of women transforms him into a callous monster, was simply not something this anime community was ready for. And so it was raked over the coals, memed on, and generally held up as "one of the worst anime ever made" (around the same time the anime community thought mind-boggling dreck like Elfen Lied was "mature" art). You would see School Days on Worst Anime of All Time lists right next to Mars of Destruction. I think even if you're only lukewarm on School Days you can see how that level of excoriation is utterly unwarranted.
The community, and the internet in general, and popular media criticism, has changed a lot since then, and I think the current zeitgeist is one that would be far more willing to accept School Days and realize its virtues, but its reputation precedes it and few are willing to watch "The Room of anime" with any amount of good faith. Certainly not enough good faith to pick up on its subtle and psychological writing. I think it's no longer as frequently held up as one of the worst anime of all time, but it's still generally despised (usually by people who haven't even seen it).
So, that's why I do my part to try and change the perspective on School Days.

HC & FC Change: Okay we paused the other thread for this. I’ve given it mass thought. If they’re really going to break Babyface’s mom out of prison she’s going to need an FC with gifs and her other one doesn’t have that. I assumed she was a cameo only npc. She needed a certain rawness and age and it was hard to find. But, it finally hit me. Natasha Lyonne. She has a lot of younger gifs but she’s in her 40′s now. I’m working it. She’s the only face with the right grit and Beagle flair that work the “Taryn mouth” if you will. So, introducing:
Brandy Beagle - ((Natasha Lyonne)) - Babyface’s birth mother
She was born by the name Candy Birkenstock. That’s what’s on her birth certificate. The father was actually quite talented in forgery and tried to ditch Ma Beagle for some other whore. He still wanted his baby girl. He stole the baby right from the hospital after shooting Ma Beagle up with H to set her up as unfit. He messed with the wrong criminal outfit. That was a man that was never heard from again, nor his hoe.
Eventually her name was blurred to Brandy. Some think it was to follow the B rule. Others say it’s because it’s her favorite drink. Others say it was her stripper name and then there’s even others still that say she was just a flat out alcoholic so there was nothing else to call her when you couldn’t understand what was coming out of her mouth.
She is the mother of Bacon, Baggie, Bouncer, Bluescreen, Megabyte, and Bebop. That is mother of seven Beagle children including Babyface. This chick was squeezing them out none too careful on the birth control as Ma Beagle pimped her out or maybe she just fell in love a few times. That’s a story for her to tell.
Bacon was already a blow with his pig transformation years ago by Magica DeSpell.
Bluescreen was incarcerated at the time Horned King’s take over. He already had rumors surfacing he was a traitor and working for McDuck but there was no proof. This prison was inside Nola and he has perished into Delta’s army of darkness now as a random zombie around Feral. He’s probably walking circles in his prison cells still locked up after dancing himself to death.
The rest are MIA since the Horned King take over and the dancing plague. Babyface assumes they’re gone and stuck in Feral like the rest of the walking dead.
So as far as anyone knows Babyface is her last and soul survivor of all her Beagle babies.
X that - Bacon survived if only because the spells in Feral didn’t affect animals. So he may be among many of the loose and free roaming hogs in the city if he can manage to find food.
Brandy is currently incarcerated on a second degree murder charge serving 30 years without parole and wrapped up in appeals courts. She never lets up. She also never makes much headway. The state has no intentions of letting Brandy Beagle out of detention. They even keep putting her in bad situations on purpose hoping she’ll cop more charges as if she doesn’t have enough time already. They’re trying to make her time as hard as possible. That’s what her rep earned her on the inside. So, she has to work twice as hard to keep her cool in there, keep her armor up.
That said, this is the kind of life she’s lead and where she came from. Ma Beagle considered her a loyal Beagle that could be trusted and a good breeder that contributed to the cause. The cause being more boys for the Beagles to rely on. She had all boys. The boy moms were like queens in Ma Beagle’s place so her incarceration was a hard blow.
But now that everyone’s gone here come Ellie and Babyface thinking they’re really going to bust her out of prison. They have no fear of the fugitive life feeling like they already are ones. With limited communications and no one contacting her right now she’s got no idea what’s really going on out there with Nola or who’s left. So their visit is going to have significant impact for her whether they could get her out or not.

DuckTalks Episode #056 – The Multitudinous Voices of Brian Cummings
Mitch and Pirate Steven were joined by the uber talented voice actor Brian Cummings this week for a very special episode of DuckTalks. Return of the Space Cowboy
It’s Yikes Yeegul from Cowboy Bebop. Just barely got this done in time for the anime art show tomorrow. Hopefully someone gives this space cowboy a home.  And, ofc, couldn’t help but reference a song with the title.

Normally I’d do WIP Wednesday, but I’m 4k into the next chapter of OUADYA (yeah...) and aiming to have it finished by Friday. I’ve been cleaning and work is exhausting and writing is my wonderful escapism. And I’m holding my one-shot WIPs hostage until after I finish my Critmas Project, which is so. close. to being done.
ANYWAY. Instead of WIP Wednesday, I thought I’d give you guys a little peek behind the curtain of that fic. Some of this I’ve said in asks before and some of it is new information you might like to know.
The Nein are currently level 8 (Cree is level 11). They average one level per arc and were actually a level higher when they faced the Iron Shepherds. By the end of this fic, they’ll be level 13.
Aside from the Iron Shepherds, no plot arcs from the original campaign appear in this fic. It’s all new material.
The sequel features major plot points from the original campaign, adjusted for the Nein’s increase in level and the changes to the narrative made by the Nein over the course of this fic, so while many arcs will be familiar, they’re far from just a remix.
The sequel will be called you can’t deny high noon.
There are nine arcs in once upon a damn-you-all, and we’re almost done with Arc Three. Arc One was Wrath (the Iron Shepherds), Arc Two was Joy (Zadash), and Arc Three is Pride (Hupperdook). Arc Three will end after chapter eighteen and chapter nineteen will start Arc Four: Vigil (which will cover the Nein’s adventures in Nogvurot.)
The arcs are as follows: Wrath, Joy, Pride, Vigil, Guilt, Disgust, Fear, Surprise, and Sorrow.
Molly’s Rend Mind is only 4d10 (he gains a new d10 every time he wakes up an eye and started with 2d10 with Ira). He one hit killed the rogue in the Sour Nest because it was a less controlled Rend Mind and he was really, really pissed. Don’t think about it.
Polymorph is not a concentration spell in this universe because I said so.
Sehanine has two forms. She just likes her child form best, because it’s funny.
The Clockwork Hounds are based on the Cowboy Bebop crew. Lance (Spike) is a Drunken Fist monk/College of Whispers bard, Fayne (Faye) is a gunslinger/thief rogue, Obsidian (Jet) is a gunslinger, Eda (Ed) is an artillerist artificer, and Auto the Clockwork Beagle (Ein) is Eda’s automaton “familiar.” (Also yes that means the “Syndicate” are College of Whispers bards. Just mull on that one.)
The backstory used for the Tombtakers is the one detailed in this church takes no conversions, so if you’ve read it, you know what Cree’s deal is, but if you haven’t, then it will be revealed to the audience as it’s revealed to the Nein.

HC: Just seeing this as Babyface’s memories of Bebop playing over in his head of moments of his brother being in and out of trouble as he’s trying to deal with all the loss / missing / dead
Babyface “Did they give you shock therapy?”  Bebop “No” Babyface “It could be me next”
Seeing the bottom as Babydoll and the other two Beagle Babe cousins from the trailer park, screaming at his mom and Grandpappy Beagle. Just behind the eyes of growing up Beagle.
