Beast Fables - Megafauna of the Continents Part 4... and the Oceans

Part 4 of my Megafauna, featuring the biggest of land and sea... though it's pretty clear that the oceans are home to the TRULY gigantic.

Asuva is the largest continent, and home of the single largest ecoregion of the surface, the great Erasuvian Steppe, sometimes known as simply the great grass sea. This giant continent in turn produced some of the largest terrestrial organisms out there, including the Avaraga Rhino, a grazing variant of Paraceratherium, surviving the onslaught of elephants and relatives bringing down forests via switching to a diet of grasses, of which the steppe provides plenty. Being such a big continent, there's also everything from giant freshwater fish, tigers, bears and a plethora of other long necked rhinos.

As big as Asuva's creatures are, even they pale in comparison to the oceans of Urvara, which houses the largest organisms on the planet. From giant forty ton plus sea turtles, and of course, even in a fantasy setting with speculative elements, the biggest animal is STILL the Blue Whale.

Arcane thoughts and. Specifically Ic as jinx and fable as Silco because. The whole table scene of course is coded, but also just the- “don’t cry, you’re perfect” is so fable in my opinion. In that situation Fable saying that is so. Yeah.

The Job Board system, which in terms of overseeing tends to fall somewhere between the Explorer's Association and the mail service, is a system that allows bugs across Bugaria to send off jobs to any bug who might take them. It is known primarily for its incredible efficiency at copying and posting jobs throughout Bugaria, as well as its ability to take down jobs that have been completed within a day of their fulfillment.

Just about any bug can post a mission through this system, with some light checks to make sure it's legitimate, and just about anyone can take a mission - with some caveats. The more difficult a mission is marked as, the more likely you are to need to show some proof of ability- occasionally very eclectic proof of ability. While an Explorer's Permit can allow you to shortcut almost all low-end requirements, anyone who isn't registered in the system will have to repeatedly prove aptitude for low-end jobs, which can get exceptionally annoying very fast, particularly as the Job Board and publicly accessible jobs tend to be almost exclusively to the low end of things.

Technically an extension of the Job Board system, the Bounty Board handles a lot of relatively high-paying jobs, often put up using communally-raised funds rather than a single person. While the Job Board gathers jobs of comparatively low importance, and allows them to be taken by anyone, the Bounty Board is specifically for jobs that are anticipated to be difficult enough to need a whole crew of bugs.

The requirements to run an outpost of a bounty board are significantly more rigorous than the standard job board, as applicants going after these jobs are much more rigorously vetted - an Explorer's Permit will often serve as a way to help you shortcut the line, putting all of your prior accomplishments in easy reach and allowing the certified offices that run these jobs to make an easy background check on you.

Alternatively, of course, some less legitimate venues can piggyback off the certification of an actual office, pretending to be another location and allowing you to shortcut the entire certification process to obtain the reward without having to prove your capability to do a job. Technically speaking, jobs taken in Doppel's tavern will show up as being taken from the bounty board office run by Utter - though this establishment doesn't technically have a physical location.

Unlike with a typical bounty board mission, you also get paid up front upon providing a specified part of the slain monster, rather than having to wait for the kingdom you're working in to certify the danger is gone before wiring you your reward. Also unlike with a typical bounty board mission, the house will take a certain cut of your reward. These venues may also take "unofficial" bounties - organized by parties who can't or won't go through the official venues to get a problem handled, or simply by people who are hunting for specific parts of a monster. You won't be tested as thoroughly before taking the job- but your client won't be, either.

Heroes All creatures born from the Tree start off at a human development of around 3 years old, so they can be more self sufficient right away. (Walking, language learning, problem solving.) They are never infants.

Normal shapes are like mammals, the heroes are not exactly. They are more similar to living crystals. Injury causes them to shatter like glass, not bleed. They only heal fully from the Tree or in the presence of each other.

The Heroes were not intended to fulfill their purpose until they were mature, like in their 20’s. Beetle (Blixer) getting shards from the Tree early was entirely a fluke & not anticipated.

The Heroes were not intended to be separated. The Tree was unusually weak after the corrupted Artifact was exhumed, that’s why they were born so far apart from each other. They were supposed to grow up as siblings from the start.

Cyan 🪻 he/him Special ability: offense & purification magic (functional)

Found by Heli, adopted by her & Bloc. The only hero to be formed fully functional.

Doesn’t really understand what’s happening with the Corruption, but goes along with what his group members tell him to do. He could sense Corruption magic from a very young age (why he got a bad vibe from Beetle). Theoretically he could’ve purified Beetle before anything happened, but nobody knew he was a Hero.

Most shapes are magical. They learn how to heal & summon weapons from a young age. His type of offense magic was unheard of. Pure, unaltered energy that comes in blasts of light. (He can shoot lasers from his hands.) He was suspended from school until after the Corruption because nobody knew how to train him, they were worried he was unsafe.

Very chipper all the time. The most innocent & clueless of the group.

Gold 🏵️ she/her Special ability: speed (functional)

Fast, but clumsy. The most prone to injury of the group. Does not heal as easily as the rest of them, which is problematic for that reason. The most recent to be born. Found by Skipper a few months after Cyan was found, at the Tree the day she was born.

Has a better idea of what’s happening with the Corruption than Cyan does. She knows it’s dangerous, she knows it can kill Cube, and she knows Beetle has it. Taught herself to eavesdrop on Heli & Cube’s conversations when they weren’t paying attention.

Was the very last of the children to forgive Beetle for what he did. Took about 2 more years for her to become at all friendly with him.

Citrine 📙 they/them Special ability: defense magic (stunted), team role is now strategy

Found & adopted by a family who was on vacation. Not knowing Citrine was a Hero, they were brought back to where the family lived, about 50 miles north of Paradise. That didn’t go superbly. Feeling such anxiety being away from the Tree, they ran away a few years later. (They didn’t know being away from the Tree was causing this, they just knew something felt really wrong.)

Skipper (boat) found them collapsed on the beach during one of his coastal surveys. Name comes from yellow quartz.

Gio 🍀 he/they Special ability: healing magic (stunted), team role is now strength

The first hero born. Nobody realized he was there. After a few days of waiting, wandered off into the forest in search of food. Pretty much fended for themselves until news of Corruption went around, at this point went searching for the other heroes.

The scar on their face was from an injury that did not fully heal. They didn’t know they were supposed to go back to the tree. It took a month for the shatter to reform (vs coming back instantly with magic). Gio was the only one who was aware of their status as heroes before the Corruption started. He was the only one the Tree gave any information to. He spoke with her briefly the day he was born.

Name means earth worker / farmer in Italian. (Because was the first to come from the earth.)

Lycan 🌹 Any pronouns Special ability: ???

The Tree did not intend to create more than 4 creatures. Lycan was born from a shard as Beetle was messing around with its magic.
