Best places in Puri to visit

Puri is a coastal city in Odisha which is famous for the holy Jagannath temple and the longest Golden beach. It is one of the four Dhammas in India and Hindu pilgrims visit the city every year for religious ceremonies such as Rath Yatra and DevaSnana Purnima. The city has many beautiful and clean beaches.

Shree Jagannath Temple

It is an important Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Jagannath. The temple was rebuilt from the 10th century onwards and was started by Anantavarman Chodaganga, the first king of the Eastern Ganga dynasty. It is a major tourist attraction for Hindu pilgrimages. The temple is famous for the Rath Yatra which is carried out annually in which three Hindu deities are pulled in large and enormously decorated temple cars.

Shree Gundicha Temple

It is a significant temple located at a distance of about 3 km from the main temple of Jagannath. It is important for the annual Rath Yatra in Puri as it is the last destination in the Rath Yatra. It is situated at the end of Badadanda road to the northeast of the Jagannath Temple. It is the birthplace of Lord Jagannath and named after King Indradyumna’s wife, Gundicha Maharani. It is also known as the ‘Garden House of Jagannath’ as it is surrounded by a beautiful garden.

Golden Beach

It is about 2 km away from the Lord Shree Jagannath Temple Puri. It is one of the rarest beaches in India who have earned the prestigious blue flag certification. It is one of the cleanest beaches in India. It has all the facilities such as bathing and changing facilities, toilets, drinking water, watchtowers, sitting arrangements, etc. It also has a small playing area for the kids. There are many hotels and resorts near the beach where tourists can stay. It is also one of the safest beaches as the police patrol here 24 hours a day.

Swargadwar Beach

It is one of the most popular beaches in Puri and is crowded with visitors throughout the year. It is located very close to the Jagannath temple.  It has numerous stalls selling local handmade products, seashells, and jewellery. However, since it is very close to the Jagannath Temple, it is very crowded and you’ll find many food stalls here. The fishermen usually sell fresh fish and seafood in plenty. Camel ride is also available at this beach.

Shri Vimala Shakti Peetha Temple

The temple is dedicated to God Vimala or Bimala located within the Jagannath Temple complex in Puri. It is one of the four Adi Shakti Peethas. It is believed that the feet of Sati Devi fell here. Vimala is considered to be the sister of Jagannath and a guardian of the temple complex. The image of goddess Bimala is made of chlorite stone.

Sudarshan Crafts Museum

It is one of the best places for art lovers. It is about 2 km away from the Puri junction. It was started in the year 1977 by Shri Sudarshan Sahoo. This museum has a great collection of artworks done by Sudarshan Sahoo like carvings in wood, stone and fibreglass, handicraft items and also fine paintings. Within the premises of the museum, one can witness a Buddhist temple built in a Japanese style, a library and a workshop.

Puri Lighthouse

It is located on marine drive road. It is one of the popular tourist spots in Puri. People often come here to get a panoramic view of Puri city and the Bay of Bengal. You have to pay nominal fees to climb the lighthouse. It is open for 1 hour from 5 pm to 6 pm in the evening. It is one of the best places to view the sunset.
