ok so it’s not “crickets” happening in your social life, not at all- but again you guys are just so, content and used to yourselves (this is my pile who talks to themselves in the mirror I see you)- when I asked yall if you felt lonely I literally drew a blank. and this is actually perfect because it’s seriously when you’re not looking/expecting and you're all good with what you have that you get given so much- so this is where I’m going to remind you all to actively meditate on keeping yourself open. don’t expect anything, just stay open and ponder what you’d like- and you’ll receive. that’s literally it. you’re in prime manifesting energy with how content and at peace you are in yourself- do you know how much you attract when you do that shit???? remain. open. and. aware. of anything that may happen, even if someone trips in front of you and you gain a brief interaction or someone asks you where to find extra office supplies and you show them the supply closet- see your abundance, allow it, remain without expectations. you are literally in the perfect energy for so much. You guys are definitely the type however to be really fine with only a few close friends you can have some fun with (and or have a nervous breakdown with) and some family… but I think this contentment you have with yourself, might have come from you feeling- misunderstood in your sense of humor or self-expression. I gotta say, you definitely handled that disappointment well, since instead of dulling yourself you just shine more inwardly for your own enjoyment and entertainment- and that’s wonderful! but I do gotta say- I know you can feel a bit, pent up. due to a lot of your big personality being fitted within you, and that’s fantastic truly- but also it has the same effect of being stuck in your house alone for one week too long. maybe that’s why you read when you can- you get to be in a very expansive and wide world that feels different from your own… oh god did I make you yearn???? oops I’m sorry. anyways!!

you’d really thrive in some environment that feels more- “widespread” I suppose, that doesn’t mean cracking yourself open to a room of strangers, I mean just sharing yourself- still from a place of your own entertainment- what I mean is that it’d be really healthy for you to find an outlet for the pent up jitters you get- find it online if you want to try that, try little baby steps, why not?- go on one-time dates just to release a bit of what you keep inside you- interact with random people sitting next to you at bars,- no attachments, just feel out what you feel when you let your inward personality, be more outward- on a lease 🐩. I’m hearing some of you may be a little fearful of attachment even, work that out- that doesn’t mean you’ll then sacrifice your peace, you’ll just gain a wider world for yourself by gaining new connections- and obviously, with the personality and personhood that you have- you can totally just pick and choose who gets to be a part of that world and your time! you owe nothing to anyone. do you have any actual clue how many people are out there, whose perception of you is not just what they observe, but what you actually are? and their perception of you actually helps you and is used to contribute to your happiness and peace??? yea. having actual friends is freaking great. and the more you simply open yourself up to that- while staying aware and choosing who you want- that is going to be the big door that’ll be opened to you- you’ll receive so many amazing experiences and will shift and broaden your world and the worlds of others, you’ll be like a big tree, growing it’s roots around other trees- isn’t that soooo cute??? ok I’m trying to see into the future details in regards to you finding your “tribe”- spirit is honestly wanting things to be vague, so as you can remain open without any expectations. kk? @starrr-dusttt i’ll be honest with you, i really, really hope this wasn’t meant the way it sounded because the way it came across was incredibly rude. i tried waiting a couple hours after getting this response to let my temper settle but unfortunately, you picked what might be the worst possible time to ask this after i got multiple comments from people over the last week about my stories or my moodboards not being enough for them and woke up this morning to two hate comments on a fic i really love

so here’s the short answer: no, you’re not getting a fic out of this

and as for the long answer: i am a grad student working on their phd dissertation. i mentor several undergrads and i teach three classes on top of my duties as a research assistant

in my free time, i write fanfic, which on tumblr have a low ratio of notice i receive to time spent writing, and i create moodboards, which frequently get the lowest amount of notes out of any of my creative outputs. my to-be-written list is over 10 pages long and that’s just things that i personally have decided to write for myself. if we’re including all the prompts that i receive every time i ask for them, we can include an additional 20-30 stories each time i ask

behind the scenes, i have 5 fics in the process of being written that won’t see the light of day for at least another couple of months, 4 of which are expected to have a wordcount of over 15k and 1 of which is expected to be over 50k so that requires a lot of spoons considering i won’t see any praise for those for a while. i have 12 prompts sitting in my inbox that i’m hoping to have completed by the end of july (but we’ll see). and i also have my long fic, kissed by a muse, that’s currently being written and posted as a wip, plus i need to start planning the stevetony long fic that i polled everyone for last year

to be completely honest, i don’t really even have the time to work on moodboards, considering that each one takes about the same amount of time as a 2k fic does (hours, by the way). and every time i decide to create a moodboard instead of a fic, i have to justify that time to myself because i know that there are people who are patiently waiting for a fic they sent in a prompt for two months ago

but sometimes, i just don’t have the energy to write a fic. sometimes, i don’t have any ideas for a prompt. and sometimes, i have ideas for a moodboard that i can’t turn into a fic, whether that’s because i have a general aesthetic and not a story idea, because it’s someone else’s idea (like this particular moodboard), or because my fandom to-do list is the length of my apartment and i really can’t add another fic to it. and when that happens, i make a moodboard because it’s something i genuinely enjoy doing, even though they typically get little notice

i can count on one hand the number of people who ever have anything to say about my moodboards themselves. most people when they say something about the moodboard comment on the story idea. and i try not to begrudge that; i get it, it was a cool idea, whatever it might be. but do you have any idea how exhausting it is to get comment after comment about when the fic’s coming?

it’s just an idea. i’m not obligated to turn every idea i have, or every idea i get inspired by, into a story. and i don’t appreciate getting asked if you can get your hopes up for a story just because you don’t feel that what i did create was enough

Tony laid awake like he did every night. Staring at the ceiling counting every single tile. 126. The number never changed but it always surprised Tony. The last person he wanted to think about always came up with that number. 126 was their anniversary. Tony decided to walk into a bar and fall in love with a pair of eyes that would make him drown. They did. Tony moved out of his bed making his way to the kitchen. If he wasn’t going to sleep; he mines awhile get some work done. Then he heard a knock at his door.

“Hello, Tony.” Steve stood in the doorway looking like the man Tony fell in love with so many years ago. The plain white t-shirt, brown leather jacket, and his dog tags; the ones Tony used to wear so Steve was always close to his heart. “So, I was in the neighborhood and I thought why not come here.” Steve shrugged. Tony took in a deep breath and ushered the man inside.

“Want anything to drink? Beer?” Steve nodded sitting quietly. He didn’t really know what he was doing there. Steve came to visit Bucky and Sam after deciding to travel after hurting Tony. That was the last thing he ever wanted to do, and he did. Steve still remembered the night. He didn’t like to but that was his curse right.

“Steve! Who is she!” Tony’s whole body shook with anger. The flowers in his hands fell to the floor along with every dream they had ever had together. The girl with the long flowing blonde hair jumped out of the bed they shared together, gathering all of her things, and ran out of the door without another word. Leaving Tony staring at Steve with a shocked look on his face. Tony didn’t know what made him madder the fact that Steve cheated on him or that Steve wasn't trying to make a move to get up. To try and fight for their relationship.

“Steve, answer me,” Tony growled. Steve moved off the bed towards Tony. Trying to grip him in his arms. Steve felt if he just held Tony everything would be okay, and all would be forgiven. Not this time. Tony pushed him away and he stumbled back towards the bed. “Put some clothes on.”

“Tony, I’m so sorry. This was a once and a lifetime thing. I swear.” Steve pleaded trying to move closer to Tony, but he wouldn’t allow it. Steve could see all of Tony’s walls were up. The look he was being given was never supposed to be seen by Steve because Steve was never meant to break his heart.

“Did you ever love me? Was I just a plaything to you? You punched a hole in your punch card. Marked off a name on your list.” Tony asked.

“Tony, how could you ever ask me if I ever loved you. I do love you. I see a world of just you and me living our happily ever after.” Steve came over and placed a hand on Tony’s arm allowing him to see deep into his amber eyes. A slight tear escaped down his tan skin. Steve squeezed his eyes shut not wanting to see the hurt he caused anymore.

“Just tell me this one thing, why did you do it?” Steve didn’t know why. He could make up an excuse. What was the point? Steve got drunk, the girl batted her eyes and then kiss him. One thing leads to another and he made the biggest mistake in his life. Steve just stared at Tony not saying a single word. Tony’s eyes turned darker as each second passed between as Steve didn’t answer.

“Get the fuck out!” Tony screamed.

“What no? I'm sorry. I love you. I can make it up. I promise never again.” Steve tried pulling Tony in, but he pushed him away with a hard shove.

“Now!”

Laughter filled the room as it did many years ago. Steve and Tony talked like no time passed between them. Like there was never any pain or regret that came from their relationship. Just all of the happiness. This might have been because of the twenty beers they had between each of them. It could be because they never stopped caring for one another.

“Wait, Rogers, you're telling me that you got to meet the Queen of England just because you are the nicest guy in the world.” Steve cackled throwing a hand over his chest. Tony smiled loving the sound that came from the other man.

“I was just trying to do the right thing. What was I supposed to do allow her to lose her priceless diamond earring?” Steve wheezed out. “But enough about me. I want to know about you. How’s life? Are you seeing anyone?” Steve leaned forward and placed a hand on top of Tony’s knee sending shock waves through Tony’s body. Tony looked up at Steve’s eyes knowing the response he wanted. Tony placed his hand overtopped the hand. It lingered there for several seconds until Tony moved Steve’s hand away. He stood up and walked into the kitchen not wanting to be in the same room with Steve anymore.

“Wait, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have asked that.” Steve stood up and walked over to the counter adjacent to Tony as not to push him away any farther. Tony kept his back turn towards him fiddling with an empty bottle in his hands.

“No, Steve, it’s okay.” Tony’s shoulder’s slumped feeling the defeat in his voice. It was nice while it lasted right, he thought. He turned around and faced Steve. They were going to have the discussion they didn’t have several years go right here, right now. They weren’t dumb kids anymore. They were adults and Tony hoped Steve had grown up a little.

“Let’s be honest with each other. You and I clearly still like each other and maybe could see a future where we could be together. Correct me if I’m wrong.” Steve just nodded allowing Tony to continue. “But there’s a lot of brokenness here. Do you realize Steve that you broke me so much that I couldn’t have a stable relationship? I stopped trying and went to therapy to work on my abandonment issues. Every session you were the reason why I went. Not because of my crappy childhood, or the scars on my chest but because you cheated on me and broke my heart. I cry almost every night feeling inadequate. Unlovable.” Tony closed his eyes allowing the tears that built up spill down his cheeks. Steve couldn’t bear to watch Tony feel this way. He wrapped the man he stilled loved tight in his arms.

“Am I the reason you cry every night?” Tony shook his head yes. “Oh, Tony. There is nothing I can say to make this all right. That night was the worst night of my life. When you kicked me out, I knew I had to change. I had to work on myself so, that one day I could come back and love you right. I was so stupid for breaking your heart and letting you go. That’s why I’m here tonight.” Steve tilted Tony’s head up. “To say I’m sorry. To say I still love you. To say I want to do this over only if you are willing to. If not it’s okay because the last four hours, we spent together was the best moment in my life.” Tony pulled Steve down closer and kissed his lips. Tony took in the moment loving how nothing had changed even though everything had. Tony pulled back placing his forehead on to Steve’s to take in the final moments of the one thing he had dreamed of.

“Steve” Tony placed both hands on either side of his face.

“Tony” Steve laid his hands overtopped of Tony’s. Neither one of the men said anything. They didn’t move because they didn’t want this moment to end.

“Steve” his voice dripping with sorrow. Steve traced the outline of Tony’s lips, already knowing the answer.

“It’s okay Tony. I understand. Goodbye, my love.” Steve walked over to the couch to grab his jacket to leave. He opened the door and walked out of the door leaving Tony with his thoughts. This was the right choice. He knew it, then why did he feel like he just made the biggest regret in his life.

“Wait!” Steve halted at the door of a cab of the voice he wanted to hear for the rest of his life. He smiled and turned around to see Tony standing in nothing but a t-shirt and a pleading look. “I love you too. Don’t leave ever again.” Steve ran over to Tony abandoning the cab to pull him tight into his arms.

“I promise, my love. This is the place I ever want to be and that is here with you.” Steve kisses Tony one more time. “Now let’s get you inside and get you warm up.”

Anyway, Starrr is here to shoot beauty videos with the girls for a social media challenge. The girls get some unusual items to work with in their videos, like hardboiled eggs, scotch tape, shaving cream, and condoms. There’s also “chicken cutlets,” which I’m pretty sure is of the bra padding variety, but in my head, I’m pretending the models were rubbing their faces with raw chicken because that makes the segment that much more exciting. The worst two performers, as far as we can tell, are Christina and Coura. Christina is too slow at pulling tape off the dispenser (hey, sometimes it gets stuck, we’ve all been there) while Coura talks way too fast to be understood. Too slow and too fast? What day is today?

Marco entered the kitchen, yawning as he grabbed a bowl and a box of cereal. What was it about not going to sleep early that made him so tired? “Good morning, Marcoooo~” the princess sang as she entered the room. “Hey Star.” He mumbled, still half asleep. “You seem to be in a good mood today…” She giggled. “That’s because today’s a special day!” Marco’s eyes opened, fully awake now. “It… is…?”

Star stared at him with a blank face before breaking out in laughter. “Haha, oh Marco. You’re so silly. Good joke! Oh! Hand me some of that cereal!” He handed over the box, watching his friend pour out her breakfast. Today was something special? But… how come he can’t remember what it was? It’s not a holiday… Mewni or Earth. He made sure to try and memorize all the important Mewnian dates. Is today an anniversary? The first time he met Star? No, that was in September… It’s not her birthday… is it? Wait, is it? Did he ever ask when her birthday was? Panic and fear set into his mind. Marco landed onto the colorful, tiled floor as he heard the air filled with chatter, electronic alarms blaring with each prize won, and the sound of coins being dispensed at each machine. He looked up with confusion and saw a stadium sized arcade room packed with several different inter-dimensional species playing as well. Some humanoid beings, others… well… he wasn’t sure how to describe them. “Uhhh…” “Ohhh, nice!  Looks like we came here on a slow day!” “This is a slow day?” Marco got to his feet and scanned the arcade. “I’d hate to see it on a busy day…” “C’mon Marco, let’s go get some coins.” “Um… maybe I should pay. You know, since today is… well…” Star laughed. “Don’t be silly! I wouldn’t do that to my best friend on today of all days.” “Heh… riiiight.” Marco scratched his head. Man, is he going to feel guilty later. The two spent the first few hours exploring the hyper advanced arcade stadium, finding games that seemed similar to the ones on Earth and Mewni on top of the unfamiliar alien-like machines that attracted the other dimensional creatures. Star was right at home, cheering and enjoying every moment of it, while Marco stuck close to the princess, not wanting to get lost in this seemingly endless arcade. Despite his precaution, Marco couldn’t help but feel like someone was watching. “Hey, Star? Maybe we should-” “Huh? Yeah, yeah, hold on Marco. I’m almost done with- OH COME ON! Not again. I keep falling for that same trap.” Marco looked around the large room, the uneasy feeling still lingering. “Star?” “Oh, Marco! I forgot to sign us up for a chance to win a neeblet. He could see multiple booths lined up against the wall where portals would open up and reveal a new customer. Marco approached the front desk. “Hello?” “HELLO!” Marco jumped back and fell to the ground. He looked up to see a familiar face. “Wait, aren’t you the guy that sells goblin dogs?” “Goblin dogs? I can't keep the lights on if I pull pranks like that here." "So... no tricks?" "No tricks." Marco looked back at the line which only grew longer as he waited. "How long's the wait?" "Should be an hour, tops." "An HOUR!?" "Hey, look on the bright side! It's a slow day today, so you won't have to wait for a week like those poor souls there," the goblin said, pointing at the a group of malnourished monsters. Marco sighed. "Great..." He stood in line and thought for a moment before turning back to Troy. "Hey, what IS a neeblet?" "What's a neeblet? Pfffft HAHAHHAHAhahaha... ahhh, good one, kid. Love the joke." "What? No, I'm being serious-" "Riiiight, sure you are. Haha... alright, now don't distract me. I gotta get back to work. Don't worry, the line shouldn't take long." Marco crossed his arms and pouted, mumbling to himself, "but I don't know what a neeblet is..." He looked forward, ready for the long wait, but something caught his eye. He squinted, trying to make out the figure. It... looked like a bird... and... wait... "Can you watch my spot for me? Thanks," he said to the monster in front of him. "...What...?" Marco ran off to follow the large figure, pushing past the crowded room. He found an opening and stuck his head through. Marco gasped. "That's it, girls. She has to be around here somewhere! She ran over to him but a blast of green energy blocked her way. Ludo growled. "Oh, how did I miss?" He fired three more shots at the princess who elegantly dodged the spells. "Hyper sonic apple beam!" The wand began firing a barrage of delicious apples, burying Ludo under a pile of fruit. She smiled for a brief moment before another blast of energy blew the apples away. "Aw man..." The monster rubbed his head before firing more blasts at the girl. She raised her wand up before slamming it to the ground. "Diamond bubble shield!" The blast of energy bounced off the shield, firing dangerously at all directions, almost hitting Marco. The boy jumped when he saw a flash of green nearly hit his face. "Staaarrrrr?" "Sorry!" Marco continued to run from the eagle, trying to avoid being carried away by the bird. He jumped on top of one of the arcade machines, readying himself for the attack. The eagle flew straight towards him for another tackle but missed as the boy jumped up and kicked it away. "Ha! Gotcha- woah!" Marco fell back as the spider web hit him, pinning him to the ground. He struggled to get out, freeing one of his arms from the web. The spider jumped on top of him, ready to take him away. Star jumped behind one of the games, avoiding more of Ludo's spells. She glanced over and saw her friend pinned down. She pointed the wand at the spider. "Mystic ice wind!" An air of cold burst through the wand, blowing the spider away and freezing the web in the process. Using his free hand, Marco karate chopped the ice, breaking himself free. He ran towards Star and stood by her side. The two monsters retreated to Ludo's side who readied his wand once more. "Alright then... let's try this again. Ahem... please give me the book?" "Uhh... nnnnno?" "Well I tried." Another blast of energy shot towards the two. Star deflected the spell and sighed, looking visibly annoyed. "You just had to pick today, didn't you?" Star smiled and hugged her best friend once more. "Aww you thought it was my birthday today?" "Heheh... y-yeah... kind of... forgot about myself there." "Wow, Diaz. Even I'm not that forgetful." Marco raised an eyebrow, making Star turn her head. "...most of the time." "Uh-huh." Star stuck her tongue out at her friend, giggling at their banter. Their laughter slowly died down as they continued to gaze into each other. An awkward silence hung over them as they stared into each other's eyes. "...O-okay! Well, thanks for the trip, Star. That was pretty fun." "Y-yeah! No problem..." "I'm just gonna go upstairs and... yeah..." "Right! You do that!" The two nervously chuckled before meeting each other's eyes again. Another awkward silence... "..." "..." "...Um... bye." Marco ran upstairs to his room, shutting the door. Star put her head on the table, sighing to herself. "Happy birthday, Marco."

Camila Coelho, Luxury Brand Partners Launch Beauty Company, Elaluz – WWD

Luxury Brand Partners continues to grow its category of influencer-led brands.

Earlier this month, the incubator launched a cosmetics company, One/Size, with Filipino beauty influencer Patrick Starrr. LBP unveils today Elaluz, a beauty and lifestyle company created in partnership with Brazilian influencer-entrepreneur Camila Coelho.

Coelho, a former makeup artist who now counts nearly 9 million Instagram followers and more than 4 million subscribers across her two YouTube channels, previously co-created a line of lipsticks with Lancôme — the company’s first influencer product line. Last year, just one month after making her Met Gala debut wearing jewelry from Diane von Furstenberg’s personal collection, Coelho launched an eponymous clothing line with e-tailer Revolve. The line expanded into swimwear in April and is one of Revolve’s top launches, according to Raissa Gerona, chief brand officer.

Elaluz translates to “she is light” in Coelho’s native Portuguese language. The superinfluencer’s first beauty company will launch on Aug. 3 with two products: a lip and cheek stain, $34, and a hydrating lip treatment, $28. Both products will be sold direct-to-consumer on Elaluz.com and online at Net-a-porter and Saks Fifth Avenue.

“I’ve been a makeup lover, a beauty lover since I was a little kid,” Coelho told Beauty Inc via phone. “I got that from my grandmother, who was always done up — even when she was in the kitchen cooking for us. She was the first person who gave me a red lipstick when I was only six years old.”

LBP’s chief executive officer Tevya Finger said he met Coelho about two years ago through an introduction by Raina Penchansky, cofounder of influencer agency Digital Brand Architects, which works with Coelho. Finger told Beauty Inc that Coelho “fits the dream team of influencers” that LBP is building.

“When you’re doing brands today, if you don’t have at least a face or voice that’s digitally connected, I think you’re going to have a very rough time,” Finger said. “I can’t imagine launching a brand today not having that.”

In assembling Elaluz’s five-person team, Finger appointed Elizabeth Maul as president. Maul first joined LBP as executive vice president of brand development. She also held a role at Becca Cosmetics, which LBP sold to the Estée Lauder Cos. Inc. for upward of $230 million.

“[Elaluz] is one of the smallest teams we have within the LBP world, but it’s OK because I’m versatile. I like to hire versatile people,” Maul said. “For me, it was who can understand luxury, who can understand product, the mindful luxury value — clean formulas, sustainable packaging, but still luxury — and digital because it was such a strong aspect of what we’re doing.”

Elaluz is estimated to be a $6 million to $7 million investment for LBP over the next three years, according to industry sources.

Considering LBP’s full brand portfolio, Elaluz’s digitally focused launch and eventual expansion beyond the beauty category is a point of differentiation.

“[Elaluz] has a lot of legs to be a really big brand because it’s not necessarily pigeon-holed in just one area,” Finger said. “It has a lot of capability.”

The company is launching with a tight edit of two products — a decision that reflects Coelho’s desire to create a curated line of her “favorite, must-have” items,” she said.

“When you think of fashion, we say every girl should have an oversize blazer, perfect denim or a good, white button-down shirt,” Coelho said. “The products I’m creating in the beginning are products that throughout the years, I’ve worn over and over again. A lot of them men can wear, too. My husband is addicted to one of our products right now.”

Elaluz will release new products on the first Monday of every month. Forthcoming drops until the end of the year fall within the makeup, skin-care, hair-care and accessory categories.

The initial two products are formulated with ingredients, such as guarana extract and cupuacu seed butter, that pay tribute to Coelho’s Brazilian heritage. The formulations omit parabens, sulfates, phthalates, PEGs, TEA, DEA, GMOs and artificial fragrances. They are cruelty-free, gluten-free, vegan and Leaping Bunny-certified.

“I wanted to prove to my own self that I could create a brand that was luxurious, had effective formulas, effective quality, but that was clean and mindful,” Coelho said. “It was very important to me to be mindful to clean when it comes to our formulas, ingredients, our packaging. It’s what I wanted.”

The packaging is expected to use materials certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.

“All of our packaging is as sustainable as we can be,” Maul said.

Coelho said she was conscious of hiring women of color for her brand and campaigns. The design team is led by women, most of whom are women of color, she said, adding, “It’s part of our DNA — inclusivity, sustainability, transparency.”

Similar to Patrick Starrr and One/Size, Coelho was highly involved in all aspects of Elaluz, according to Maul and Finger. Founder involvement, said Finger, is key to the way LBP structures its deals.

“It’s common in the industry where influencers do deals where they get a royalty on the products. I think when you get a royalty on a product, it’s different than being an equity holder or an owner,” Finger said.

“Influencers are incentivized to sell products, [but] Camila owns a huge chunk of this brand with us,” he continued. “She looks at this like it’s her baby start-up and her company. She’s on the board, she’s part of every discussion. In the end, [she is] that much more tied and connected.”

If you want to become known on a platform as large as YouTube, you need to decide what you want to be known for. Picking a category for your videos, like ‘lifestyle’ or ‘gaming’ is important, and it can be beneficial to get even more specific.

Instead of being just another channel on a topic that has thousands of channels already, figure out what unique value you bring to the table. That could be anything from another interest you have (i.e. lifestyle videos that focus on camping/hiking) to your sense of humor.

Define your unique style

One of the best ways to stand out from the crowd on YouTube is by creating a consistent ‘look’ for your videos and channel. This can mean using the same intro and outro styles for all your videos, using a consistent thumbnail layout, and/or utilizing the same editing techniques (i.e. time lapses or jump cuts) over and over in your content.

Having a distinct style will make you more memorable, and it will also let your viewers know that you’re serious about your channel and put a lot of thought into branding it.

Shorter videos get more views

This isn’t true in all cases – gaming ‘Let’s Plays’, for example, tend to be longer – but in general keeping your videos under 5 minutes will help to ensure fewer viewers are clicking away before the end.

This will increase your watch time, help your videos rank better in search results, and ultimately support the growth of your channel.

Making a short video can be harder than making a long video, because it requires more editing. The trick is to use techniques like ‘jump cuts’ to take out anything that might break your video’s momentum (i.e. silent pauses). Some creators say they only end up using a 3rd of what they shoot.

Be responsible to your audience

When you’re talking to all the denizens of the internet, you have a higher level of responsibility for how you use that influence than if you were just talking to a few of your friends.

There’ve been a lot of scandals recently surrounding people behaving badly on YouTube and, while it may seem like big YouTubers can get away with it, audiences are definitely looking for creators to follow who treat them with respect.

Creating a positive, inclusive, community around your channel will draw in more subscribers than trying to build an exclusive clique.

Chris Pratt Criticizes my Midline

I meet Chris Pratt (CP) not at my usual bar but out on a nearby greenway because apparently he likes to run up and down hills. His idea.

Me: Well, hey. Here we are.

CP: Yeah hey! Nice to meet you.

Me: So this is not the usual start to my “3 beers and karaoke interview.”

CP: (laughs) No, no it’s not.  I do love karaoke though. Seriously. 

Me: You know, I kinda guessed that you would. Are we going to run?

CP: Yeah. Are you up for it? 

Me: (hands on hips, silently looking up and down bike path) 

CP:  Just to get the blood flowing. You know. Heart rate up. 

Me: I don’t do burpees. Just putting that out there. 

We commence to run a ways. He almost immediately begins outpacing me, and then he stops at the top of a hill and waits for me to join him. I finally arrive, breathing hard. He looks as crisp as morning lettuce.

CP: Not so bad right? (laughs)

Me: Let’s get a beer. 

We walk, don’t run, back to the bar. We take up in my usual table near the back corner, at the edge of the bar, and I wave at Eddie the Bartender. 

Me: What’ll you have?

CP: Uh, they don’t have-- (mutters)

Me: I’m sorry, what was that?

CP: (mutters again)

Me: Michelob Ultra? Really? 

CP: (slightly sheepish)

Me: Okay. No, it’s fine. Michelob Ultra. OK.

I return with the bottles of Michelob Ultra and a glass.

Me: Do you want a glass?

CP: Uh, no, I’m good. Do you drink Mic Ultra out of a glass?

Me: I like to drink beer out of a glass. You like Michelob Ultra. I think we’re evenly matched here. Okay. Cheers.

CP: Cheers!

Me: So.

CP: So. 

Awkward silence.

Me: So. Guardians. Star Lord. Is that with one “r” or two? CP: One. But it does have a hyphen.

Me: Star-Lord. Okay. I think two “r”s would have been cooler.

CP: Like Ringo Starr? 

Me: Yeah I guess. I just think two would be cooler. Did they consider that?

CP: I don’t really know. I guess. Probably. 

Me. Yeah they probably hash all that stuff out pretty extensively.

More silence. We sip our Michelobs.

Me: So... you’re pretty tall.

CP: Yeah I guess. Not really. You’re pretty tall.

Me: Yeah. I’m about 6′2″, 6′3″

CP: Really? I’m 6′2″.

Me: Stand up! We stand back to back and determine we are, in fact, almost the same height. We would need an objective bystander to tell us who is taller and we lack that. Me: So what’s the deal with Chris Hemsworth?

CP: What do you mean? Like, what’s he like to work with?

Me: No, I mean what’s his fucking deal? 

CP: (stares at me blankly, a worried look creeping on to his face)

Me: Did you know he doesn’t want to be interviewed by me? He refuses.

CP: Well, he can’t do everything. He’s a successful guy, busy and all. I’m not even sure why I’m here doing this interview. Is this an interview?

Me: Well, yeah. It is. And I make all of it up, so that’s why you agreed to it. I just pulled some strings and made it happen.

CP: Sooo- this isn’t really happening?

Me: Look, just don’t worry about it. You wanna know why I think Chris Hemsworth won’t be interviewed by me?

CP: Sure.

Me: He think’s I’m taller than he is and he can’t handle it.

CP: Really?? Where do you get that from? I don’t think so. Chris is a really nice guy. He’s probably just too busy. 

Me: He’s not even really that tall. IMDb says he’s 6′2″ and 3/4.

CP: Well-- Me: SIX TWO AND THREE FUCKING QUARTERS That is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen.

CP: Well, he didn’t write his own IMDb bio. That’s not how that works. At all.

Me: Well whatever. I’ll believe it when he gets his ass down here and sings some fucking karaoke with me. And then we’ll see who’s six fucking two and three quarters.

CP: (has no response)

Me: What do you do besides drink Michelob Ultra and run up and down hills and play in movies?

CP: (taking a long drink of beer) Well--

Me: Do you like dogs?

CP: Oh yeah. Love dogs.

Me: (pulling out my phone) Check out this picture of my dog. He’s pretty much the cutest.

I scroll through my phone, showing him pictures.

CP: Aw! LOL. OMG! What a cutie.

Me: Yeah, I love dogs. So what do you think you’re going to sing tonight?

CP: You mean karaoke?

Me: Were you planning to sing something else? What even would that be? Like, slam poetry or something? No, yeah, karaoke. 

CP: Okay, okay, yeah I don’t know. Are you going to sing?

Me: I know we just met but one thing you should know about me is that I fucking love karaoke and yes, of course I will be singing. You’re lucky I’m not singing now! Actually, you’re unlucky, because I love karaoke and I have been told on at least one occasion that I really bring a lot to my performance. 

CP: Wow. Okay. Good to know.

Me: Let me ask you a question.

CP: Sure--

Me: How do you feel about karaoke duets?

CP: uh--

Me: For or against?

CP: ... uh... for? I guess?

Me: Sweet. I’ll put us down for one. Hang on. I’ll go get paper and pens. And a book. And more beers. Sit tight.

CP: Alright.

I return with a 3-ring binder of karaoke songs listed by title, several slips of paper, two pens, two Michelob Ultras, two shots and two lime slices. 

Me: I asked the bartender what was the lowest calorie shot for my fit-bit friend and he said vodka or tequila so I got tequila.

CP: oh. Yeah but tequila has carbs. 

Me: Seriously? Well damn. Does vodka?

CP: Nope. 

Me: Goddamn. Well. Will you drink it anyway because you don’t want me drinking both of these. Plus you just ran up a hill, surely that counts for something?

CP: No, it’s okay. It’s okay. I’m just used to paying close attention.

Me: Yeah, you really buffed up, huh? You want a lime slice? Does that have carbs? CP: Sure. Fuck it.

Me: There you go! That’s the spirit. Salud!

CP: Salud!

We drink our tequila like total pros. 

Me: But seriously, how did you get so buff?

CP: (laughs) It was seriously hard. Lots of training, lots of eating the right things. I had a really great trainer, so that helped.

Me: I’m always disappointed when I ask someone how they got so buff and they don’t say “eating french fries.”

CP: Yeah. No french fries. Unfortunately. How about you?

Me: How did I get so buff?

CP: (laughs)

I catch him giving me the once-over and taking in my belly flab 

Me: Oh so are you saying I’m not buff? Well, I hope one day you’re a woman who has had three children and is almost forty and loves french fries. Starrrr-Lord.

CP: I have a kid--

Me: (wagging a finger) Not the same, not the same at all. Buddy.

CP: --and I’m almost forty.

Me: (choking on my Michelob Ultra) Shut the fuck up.

CP: No, yeah. I’ll be forty next year.

Me: Shut up. Are you kidding me? I’ll be forty next year. No fucking way.

CP: (shrugs)

Me: When’s your birthday? 

CP: June 21st.

Me: What year?

CP: 1979.

Me: Fuck you!! I was born in ‘79. Fuck!  Dammit. I thought you were like, well younger than me. Like 35 or 34 or something-- CP: Well, really that’s not even that much younger--

Me: Now I have to consider the fact that if I worked really hard I could potentially be buff. And I don’t want to have to consider that.

CP: Sorry?

Me: No, it’s not your fault. Fuck. It’s okay. I was sorta buff once. I’ll always have the memories... Look, you better pick a song because this place is going to start filling up and we need time to sing at LEAST three songs.  I think I’m going to start with Elton John. Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me or Tiny Dancer?

CP: hm. Tiny Dancer.

Me: Oh! no wait. I’ll do Rocket Man since you’re the Starrr-Lord. Sweet.

CP: Okay...

Me: What are you doing first?

CP: Um, I don’t know, maybe--

(Together at the same time): Friends in Low Places?!

Me: Okay, you go turn these in. I’ll get more MICHELOB ULTRAS for fuck’s sake. (muttering under breath)

I return with two more beers and two more shots of tequila.

CP: Oh--

Me: Ah, come on! I looked it up on my phone and it’s only like five grams of carbs. God you are a wuss. 

CP: Oh, I mean it’s on! Fuckin’ A! Down the hatch!

Me: Okay easy there Jock-o. Down the hatch. Salud!

CP: Salud!

Karaoke DJ: Okay! Next up we have Sara and Chris, singing, “Under Pressure”!

Me: I hope you can do a good David Bowie.

CP: Oh, it’s on.
