It's not the first time Arthur sees Merlin. Up until now, however, all they had been doing was fighting each other. This is the first time Arthur sees him laugh though. And Arthur figures he may not be a straight as he originally thought. Hence, very first bi panic.

I want a BBC Merlin fanfic where Hunith visits Camelot as a surprise. Merlin doesn't know she's coming, only Gaius knows that she plans to visit. This is set in a time period where all the knights are alive (I'm looking at you Lancelot.) and Arthur is Prince, but running the Kingdom as Uther is unwell.

Hunith pulls up to Camelot and is walking towards the Castle through the citadel, burdened by her bags, when a cheerful voice rings out. "Do you need any help, miss?" It's one of the many Castle servants.

Hunith explains that she is heading to the Castle to visit her son who works there, the servant then offers to carry her bags.

"Oh I don't want to be a bother." Hunith replies

"It's no bother at all! Really, I was heading that way already." The servant insists and they both make their way to the castle, "What's your son's name by the way, I might know him if he works here."

"His name is Merlin." Hunith responds with a smile. The servant stops walking and looks at her. It's not only him that stops at this announcement.

"Y-you're Merlin's Mother?!?" A nearby servant who had been close enough to hear the conversation says in awe.

The courtyard that they're walking through gradually fills with hushed whispers as the news spreads. Everyone knows of Merlin. The Prince's manservant who had managed to not quit in the first week of serving him. Merlin, who changed the Prince from a spoiled brat into a good man whom the Kingdom was proud of and eagerly awaited the day he would be crowned King. Merlin, who had followed the Prince into battle time and time again to save Camelot.

I want a fanfiction where The Entire Of Camelot loves Merlin and is thankful for his role in making Arthur a good person. Where not only the Knights, but the Castle staff meet his mother and collectively decide that she is That Woman and treat her with Respect. Where they treat her like Royalty.

Ofc Gwaine loves her. That's his best friend's mom. Hunith looks at all the knights and adopts them on the Spot.

And Merlin is either really confused by this behavior or knows and just lets it happen.

Arthur has no idea what's going on or why but he treats her with reverence and love because that's his future Mother in Law and he's very much starved for parental affection which she gives him (and the knights) in spades.

But yes, I just want a fic of people meeting Hunith and being like "Thank you for giving birth to your son. I'd die for you both" and her being like "...please don't."

(Bonus if Leon meets her and is just like. "How did you survive being around that little shit (Merlin) for so long?" And she just laughs and gives him advice, which makes him cry because he's just so tired. #LetLeonRest2024 I will push this agenda till I die)

DRAWTOBER #18 - Arthur Pendragon VS The World by Ally_Oop

When Arthur rises from the Lake, it isn't immediately clear what new purpose he's meant to be fulfilling this time around. Thrown into a strange new world with strange new problems and next to no clue what to do about them, Arthur finds solace in the only two things that remain from his old life: Merlin, and the mysterious stranger who wants Arthur dead. Just like old times.

this scene is SO funny to me but I almost feel bad for using it to represent this fic, because it is so, so, much more than a standard Arthur-comes-back-fic ohhhh my god. the plot is just fantastic, and legitimately kept me guessing right until the climax - I was so certain I knew what exactly was going on and I was WRONG and I was so delighted to be wrong!! in some ways it feels almost like a deconstruction of certain types of the Arthur-comes-back trope and I'm sorry I can't explain myself better but I don't want to give any spoilers. for a fic that is hilarious and heartwrenching please go and check this out.

Merlin rewatch -- S3E7: The Castle of Fyrien

Something about Merlin and fighting.

I think Merlin's sword skill improved a lot this season. He matched Morgana for a short while in the opening episodes, and in this he knocked out a Cenred guard too.

But Arthur didn't seem to know that.

To be fair, it's still true that Merlin wasn't as good as Morgana, and the latter one was just Arthur poking fun, not necessarily have anything to do with Merlin's skills (in fact, when they were escaping Arthur still told Merlin to guard Gwen not the other way around).

Still, Arthur was pretty shocked when Merlin knocked out that guard.

It’s rather delightful. Interesting too. He didn't look happy, but dubious and a little wary, perhaps? He still took away Merlin’s sword as if fearing that he would cut himself.

It could be that Arthur had no idea of Merlin's improvement (did Merlin practiced by himself?), so he viewed it as a blind luck and took away the weapon as he'd done in The Moment of Truth era.

I wonder if there was a part of Arthur that was denying the possibility of Merlin being good at something violent. He felt like it made Merlin someone he didn't know.

It's a little sad because Merlin definitely wanted Arthur to acknowledge his usefulness.

“Who’s going to watch my back if we get into trouble?” “I am.”

It broke my heart a little how desperate Merlin sounded here.

Keeping the harmless appearance was important for Merlin's survival, but maybe he could ask Arthur to teach him sword fight, if he couldn't reveal the magic part?

Arthur smoothed Merlin's hair again, trying to calm his own breathing. “He’s not waking up,” Arthur’s voice cracked.

“Give it a moment. His body has been through a lot,” Gaius told him. Arthur nodded and tilted Merlin's face upward again. “You’re alright,” he whispered again, “you’re alright. Everything is alright.” Except it wasn’t, and Arthur had no idea how the curse would strike next. 

He watched Merlin, trying not to hyperventilate as he cradled the other man’s cheek. His thumb stroked it gently. “Come on…” Arthur begged, “wake up… You’re alright…” He had to be alright.

Finally, Merlin’s eyes slowly flickered open. The blue that reminded Arthur of a night sky flicked around the room quickly before meeting Arthur’s own eyes and focusing slowly. It was the most beautiful sight Arthur had ever seen. 

It was all he could do not to kiss him right then and there. Let him breathe, he reminded himself. Let him breathe. His thumb continued to stroke Merlin's cheek. He bent forward and kissed his forehead again. Pulling back, he discovered Merlin's eyes still focused on him. 

“Merlin…you can hear me?”  Arthur asked.

Merlin gave a very slight nod, eyes still staring up into Arthur’s. 

“Good, it's about time you woke up from your beauty rest.” It was all Arthur could do to keep his tone even and his voice from cracking as he spoke. 

Merlin’s gaze instantly switched to being utterly incredulous. His eyes practically screamed “you ass”. 

Arthur started to laugh hysterically, and he leaned down, embracing Merlin with both arms. Taking a few deep breaths of his own before pulling back, he sat on the end of Merlin’s bed and pulled the other man close. One hand rubbed up and down Merlin’s back while the other caressed the nape of his neck and the bottom of his black hair. Arthur’s lips pressed over Merlin’s skin wherever he could reach.

Internally, he continued to panic, because this could never happen to Merlin again. And it would if he didn’t do something. An idea struck him, perhaps he could plead with the witch— convince her that her revenge was better if the victim of it was him.

A tale spanning centuries, as Arthur finally returns magic to Albion.

this fic... woooo boy this fic... most Arthur Returns fics prefer to focus on Arthur's experience post-return, or Merlin's experience waiting for him. this fic covers the centuries before he wakes up, but from Arthur's side - the summary is a very good summary of the fic so I won't repeat it, but the dynamics between Arthur and Freya, between them both and the Sidhe, the way we really get to see Arthur acting like a king, making tactical choices in his diplomacy and learning and growing... it's SO GOOD. I've not read anything else quite like it.
