11.14.24: Blurbo Blursday: Issue 3: Backstory

Good morning, fellow OC creators, artists, and readers. Today, I decided to focus on Bianca. It’s hard to believe that Bianca has been around for around 27 years now. The journey she under went from just a ‘Final Fantasy 7’ OC to what she is now is amazing to me.

Bianca is a character that spans two fandoms and original work. She is a temporal angel that can control time, space, and reality.

If your character could change anything in their past with no consequences, what would it be and why?

Content Warning: abuse, body horror, coercion, forced pregnancy, forced reproductive procedures, gaslighting, genital mutilation, medical trauma, manipulation, psychological trauma, surgical mutilation, trauma, violence.

If Bianca Moore could change anything about her past without consequence, it would be prevent her capture and experimentation by Shinra. Diana Ravenscroft and Professor Hojo subjected her to a period of abuse that shattered her sense of security, dignity, and autonomy. This left her with lasting physical, emotional, and psychological wounds that continued to affect her for years. The horrific experiences of being surgically cut open, forcibly impregnated with a doomed pregnancy, used as an experimental subject, and injected with foreign substances, all while being treated as nothing more than a specimen, deeply scarred her emotional well-being and sense of self.

Without these experiences, Bianca may have retained a stronger connection with her celestial essence and a more balanced path. Her ordeal deepened her distrust in authority and heightened her fear of medical settings and equipment — fears that she constantly grapples with even Sephiroth, her closest confidant.

Without this harrowing experience, Bianca would have had a very different relationship with her demonic powers. The instability caused by the infusion of Jenova and S-cells into her made her powers volatile and difficult to control, forcing her into an identity known as the “Angel of Vengeance’, instead of someone who could harness both sides of her heritage with of her life-stealing corruption of her celestial powers. Without the influence of Shinra, Diana, and Hojo, Bianca might have been able to explore her own potential as an anti-hero, instead of a villain.

Ultimately, changing this part of her past would reclaim her self-worth and her power. In erasing Shinra’s abuse from her life, Bianca would discover a path grounded in her own choices rather than a reaction to past harm. By removing the need to rebuild herself from trauma, she could define her life by the pursuit of her own destiny and untainted by Shinra’s manipulation.

Since i Don't Like the TBB set up, how bout some health alternatives?

THE ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN REX Corny title, I know.

The idea here is that Rex hasn't ever been a main character. He's been support only, reactive to other stronger personalities. A show that centers around Rex Could be beneficial to his character, and be a clone centric show.

( I woudln't trust the TBB writers with it--but there's someone out there that can pull it off. )

In this story, instead of following the BBs, we replace them with Captain Rex. The story goes is that, after the crash of the ship, he reinfiltrates Kamino to see the situation from the homeworld, and runs into Omega.

Instead of BBs having Omega, Rex does. ( Justified by the fact that Rex, has in fact said on screen with the full implications, that he wanted kids. Perfect match I think. )

Rex is building a rebellion and was high ranking--of course he would know about informants like Cid. He would work with her to build contacts, which justifies meeting Guest Characters and slowly building the rebellion, whilst on the side trying to raise Omega.

It comes to a head in Season 2 when the Empire takes interest in Rex.

And season 3, the final season, ends with Rex facing the Tantis project, just one of many horrors that occurred to Clones.

Your Crosshair arc could be replaced with Cody. Positions of the side teammates being Wolffe and Gregor as the show progressed, to match up with Rebels.

And suddenly, everything clicks.

The shallow impact of the BBs would be immediately covered by the fact that Rex has had 7 years to be developed and solidified as a character, and wouldn't require either introduction or set up, just to get him to where the story needs him. Same with everyone else.

Even Omega taking the spotlight wouldn't take so much issue, beacuse as a new character she needs development to solidify her position in the Galaxy Far Far Away as a character, and it wouldn't be any skin off Rex's teeth.

CLONE FORCE 99 (As opposed to the "Bad Batch")

Instead of occurring in a post Order 66 era, its a series of complication arcs that occur at various times over the course of the Clone Wars involving The Bad Batch. It explores character histories and dynamics, missions and backstories, of course exploring the Galaxy Far Far Away.

And the last season introduces Echo, and then we End at Order 66. The purpose is that Order 66 leaves the BB's fate ambiguous.

No ending has to be happy, or known. Tragedy has its place, and is even needed to make a piece relevant.

THE OMEGA PROJECT

A show that actually centers around Omega, and a few select cadet characters. In the narrative style of Rebels, young cadet and odd clone Omega now has to navigate a new galaxy, post Order 66, and what her purpose in the Kaminonian "Omega Project" is...

No Bad Batch this time, no overly despairing themes. This is explicitly a kid's show.

If you want to Focus on Omega, then focus on Omega. She doesn't bring anything to the Bad Batch that doesn't diminish them in some way--so just give her, her own show. Boom, problems solved.

So yeah, there's three shows that could've been made from the TBB rough draft mess.

Top 5 Luck and Gauche potential friendships?

say what?! you're my favorite person anon!

let's see... in general, the black bulls have MANY amazing friendships that didn't get enough exploration or weren't explored at all, potential friendships, underrated friendships, friendships that could've offered the characters a lot of depth and growth, and so on, may be personal because I love gauche and luck but I think their characterizations are so unexplored compared to most BBs, so thank you for giving me the chance to ramble a little about their potential.

starting with honorable mentions:

Luck with Zora (both lost their parents and lived their life hanged by their shadows while acting overly joyful despite their suffering), with Yami, and we can never get enough of his brother-sister dynamic with Vanessa!

Gauche with Noelle (both tsunderes with big/little sibling issues), with Magna, and with the other girls besides grey be it him vibing with nero or bickering with vanessa.

Gauche & Charmy - again I think gauche should be around the female members more, but I feel like it'll be hysterical to see him spend more time with his senior equal in age, charmy!

Luck & Liebe - if asta and magna can bond over being hothead loud peasants then luck and liebe should bond over their dead moms and impish, mischievous nature! I think liebe should bond with any black bull tbh but luck and nero are the ones I'm interested in his dynamic with the most.

Gauche & Finral - this is probably me but I really thought there's gonna be more of their growing friendship after gauche's arc since they've got some good moments together, they even got that older brother nobles connection to bond over.

Luck & Charmy - listen this is my comfort friendship and you can pry it from my dead cold hands!! I have no complex reason I just think they're besties ever since they went to heart kingdom and later elsiya together, I respect tabata as a person but my man dropped the ball in this one they could be a hilarious duo or a beastlike duo they could be the squad's lucky charms (duoble puns intended) and so more, I love their short-termed trio with leopold but still!

Gauche & Zora - I did not post over thirty quotes of them bickering like two asshole tsunsderes who don't know the first thing about friendship—nah not at all, I also didn't think too much of how similar their backstories and characters development are—I MEAN, they definitly didn't word-by-word repeat the exact same line... what am doing putting them in this list they got zero potential in friendship, silly me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Luck & Gauche - I think this is the best and most wasted friendship for each of them because we already have magna & zora as a duo to parallel them and it'd have been interesting to see them working side by side with their shared experience of being possessed by elves and similar character stories... most fans think of gauche's dynamic with grey as his next natural step in development, but I've always felt that him and luck would've made a lot more sense.

Ebook volume 4 and 5 both dropping on the 30th… I wonder how many side stories Sing Shong plans to include in them, if any. My biggest hopes for character centric stories are:

2. Jang Hayoung

3. Jung Heewon

My only issue with a JHW story… is that it might contradict my lovingly constructed backstory for her… I would need to work so hard to completely ignore canon :(

I also really hope to see the Kaizenix trio, old 0th!YJH, and HSY opening the door to KDJ’s room as some of the scenes BB chooses to illustrate! …Even if I know that 0th!YJH will probably have two tiny wrinkles and that’s all. Whatever, it’s basically canon, anyway.

Born to Robert and Lin Choi, MinYa lived in Seoul, South Korea up until the age of 6, then moving to Sydney, Australia shortly before her 7th birthday.

During her teen years she moved to Racoon City per her father getting a promotion, only to move to a city a few miles away before the outbreak.

once the outbreak had hit, her father took the initiative to turn the hotel he was managing into a safe-haven; enforcing the walls, making sure there’s a good food supply etc. turning a few floor rooms into hospitals wings as well

granting her the role of main helper, MinYa is in charge of welcoming newcomers and managing those who are ill. As well as making sure everyone is fed on time and is keeping on top of their medication. She helps maintain the peaceful atmosphere and deals with those who are facing issues with other survivors. While not exactly part of her job, she’s often seen maintaining the garden outside and playing with the kids.

Her mother and sister had passed prior to the outbreak, their ashes were put into vases which currently sit in her hotel room.

Hello my dear!!!! I see you have your eye on the What Is Owed series ;)

6. What Is Heard and What Is Answered: this one is from Aziraphale's pov! Because I haven't done that in a while in this series and I miss him :) this one frequently involves him and Crowley wrestling with their relationships with God. They're protected by Her now, but the question remains: why? And why now? And why did She allow the torture to happen in the first place? And why did Aziraphale have to be the one to save Crowley, why couldn't God just pick him up and put him somewhere else Herself? Many questions, which we may or may not get the answers to.

I love exploring Crowley and Aziraphale's respective relationships with God. There's so much there already in canon, with issues of abandonment, broken promises, faith, hope, rejection, Great Plan vs Free Will, etc. So this adds on the extra angst of this series, and dives right into it :) I left it off right before A&C were about to have a huge argument...maybe I stopped because it was a painful scene to write? But I'm def coming back to it, the fic is about 3/4 done!!

7. What Is Taken and What Remains: this one is from Crowley's pov, and considerably fluffier for the most part ^.^ it involves love languages, and a steamy bath ;) and it also involves the issue of wings and how that relates to the angsty backstory of this series :(((( I think the title refers to how when you're traumatized, sometimes you don't get all the pieces of yourself back. And while you can still find a happy fulfilling life afterward, some parts of it might not be the same. This fic deals with Crowley trying to wrestle with that (because he wants to be FINE, and he wants to be fine NOW, poor bb goes too fast sometimes) But as always with this series, it ends with hope and sweetness!

Giovanni in Epithet Switched is like 9 for make him fit better in Molly's role but I think it would be funny if he was still a teenager (still younger than canon) in the Banzai Blasters (maybe??)(he still wants to be a bad guy even he doesn't work with them)

He broke into the museum alone to show to his superiors that he is strong and epic and not because his minions just take hits from him (??)

He meets Molly (maybe a little olde than canon) and she is much more cold but full of emotions than Canon! Giovanni

She also works alone... (Maybe she works at the Banzai Blasters mostly for help it?? Like. She sees it's garbage and knows that they scam kids so she is doing something about it making it better (in that case she has his classmates))

But she reveals herself to be a sweetheart :3

Giovanni is very impressed and tries to invite her to join the banzai blasters(??)

Gio also visited the museum with his friends and went "wow that's cool! I will steal it!"

I think that it'd be cool if I swap both Indus and Mera as characters (like. Indus is the one in charge) but also swapping them with Sylvie (he is the main antagonist)

Mera is still the one with issues and is the one doing the thinking but Indus is like. The soul of this. He is the one that is encouraging all of this.

Sylvie is able to manipulate Indus and telling him that a help from some important and rich guy would be nice so he sent them attacking the intruders

Maybe he hates how he can't control his powers that just ruins everything he has (like. He can't speak to someone without them falling asleep or he is just constantly tired himself??)

Or he has just an inferiority superiority complex and wants to study it like in canon??

I think him as main antagonist would be cool I need to understand if I want to make him threatening or not.

Molly and Giovanni still have a nice chat and Molly starts to like be a friend to the silly guy that is being kind to her and tells him her Tragic Backstory

She runs away at age 13 after she attacked his father in an impulse of rage and started raising herself on her own (so she in Alone Villain would be without and in BB Molly she would sacrifice everything of herself for that stupid organization)

SOCIETY IF HE WAS STILL FRIENDS WITH VIC. i miss them </3 and thats not even touching on his powers. i personally like that gar's powers dont have clear limitations (like how he can turn into alien animals that he shouldnt even be able to tap into or how he can turn into creatures that don't even exist if his emotions get the better of him) but it always seemed to me more of writers not knowing what to do with him rather than actually playing with the idea…i think to some extent, untapped potential that could be seen as wasted potential is kind of the point with gar since he's initially introduced as afraid to take responsibility, but well. it has been literal decades at this point, and i think most of its ended up being mistranslated from the original intention with gar to Actually being wasted potential with him. come on man

alsooo oh my god gar is like the EPITOME of everyone but me is wrong about them to me. its genuinely so jarring to me what fanon gar is like HDKJFKHJKG like he's not a silly sunshine boy or whatever (which if i am being honest comes most of the time from bbr//ae shippers who warp both of them entirely to fit their personal ship dynamic preference but i digress). the canon bb that i know is honestly pretty snarky with his humor and CAN 100% be a jerk when he's feeling like it. and he knows when he's being one. he also knows when he's being annoying he does it on purpose. ALSO probably the biggest thing i dislike about fanon gar is when people act like his only trauma was with tara when the guy literally has the most insanely traumatic backstory ever. like obviously there's the inferiority complex but what about his MASSIVE survivor's guilt (like, part of the tara angst is a subset of his survivor's guilt but no one ever seems to acknowledge that either) and his status as a metahuman. he's literally green. what about his history as an actor and how that bleeds into how he can act like a different person depending on the people he's around. and i know a lot of people get annoyed about his daddy issues with steve but i am personally intrigued. he's such a deeply fucked up guy that i will never understand how people think he only has One Deep Thing to explore about him. i think a lot of people blame the teen titans cartoon for what fanon gar is now and while obviously that version of gar isnt as Deep without full context i feel like its still pretty easy to pick up the pieces. if anything its the fans who create fanon based on a kids cartoon they havent seen in Years from what they very vaguely remember and shoving it into their own desired tropes who are to blame LOL especially when dc just ends up encouraging it too

however i DO think he works best on a team, he's very much a team sort of guy and thrives off of interacting with others. something i find so interesting about gar is that technically he's capable of doing solo work but very much prefers a team setting. and besides a big part of how his character works is by having people to bounce his little quips off of. and his serious moments aren't nearly as rewarding if theres no one there to witness them i think. and not to bring up vic again but he worked so well with vic 😔 from what i know gar literally does not have any sort of fun dynamic these days which sucks when he is very much a dynamic guy. anyways as you can tell i like him maybe i guess. just a little bit. this got embarrassingly long (probably because i do want to talk about titans stuff in general on here and then i just get shy </3). he's my bestie who kind of sucks and i love him. thank you and good fucking night!!!!!!

Nightmare Time Episode 3 Thoughts

I usually save this for the end of my thoughts but I have to say this now. OMG MATT DAHAN!!! I WILL NEVER NOT BE IMPRESSED BY HIM! Usually with the episodes I catch 1 or 2 motifs but I swear I caught everyone this time. And they all fit so well. My attention was evenly split between the music and the story this time. It was so freaking good. Matt deserves all the awards like omg.

I think this is the least laggy the theme has been. Good job going all out for the last one!

I said to my mom "Did Shashona record this video?" and she did!! Great cinematography Shashona!!

OK OK OK SO Jane said they were driving home from her parents house. Which means they were still alive when Jane died. That was only a year and a half ago so the Perkins parents might have died more recently than we thought. It's like Spring of 2019 right? So Jane died around Fall 2017. I don't remember if this was said in the show (it probably was and I'm saying nothing new) but I think Black Friday takes place about a year after her death. Tgwdlm took place October 2018. They have to have died only a few months before then. How long had Emma been in Hatchetfield before tgwdlm? Maybe there is a possibility we can see a flashback of an interaction with her parents depending on how long it's been. Also that means Emma lost her whole family in the span of a few months omg. And Tim lost his mom and his grandparents in that time. I want to see how they grieved with all of that. Also I know I'm crossing universes here but Emma also almost died the same day Jane did. Some strange force must really have it out for the Perkins family. Good on Emma for surviving like a champ.

Ok so I thought they went scouting for girls because Jane didn't want the man she loved to have to devote the rest of his life to a car. I thought she was trying to help him move on. She was getting good lover points but those have since been redacted.

Jane is definitely bi and I love that for her. I don't care if she tried to kill her new crush. It was new enough for it to mean nothing.

This is random and unrelated but I never noticed how big Mariah's eyes were before.

So Webby and the Doll Gang are all siblings? I find it interesting that the were described to all where black. And Webby's color theme is white. Like how the good and bad ukeleles were white and black. This might sound really dumb see as we don't have a 100% accurate visual of the black and white but I wonder if Webby ever left would it be 100% black? Like if Wiggly went through the portal would it become a little less black? Does this make sense? Also I'm starting to see the black and white as less of a bad place. Its starting to see more ominously neutral.

Hannah's favorite show is He-Man no I do accept criticism.

Okay, so my pick for this...hmmm, why don’t we talk about TRAUMA. I’ve had a lot of people comment about how I handle everyone’s trauma in the series, so I figure that’s a solid point of interest :)

I knew I was going to be writing this fic before I had actually played all the games, which gave me a bit of an advantage from a writing perspective because I actually took a HUGE amount of notes while I played. The most important of these notes were pages that I called “Lists of Trauma”. And I had one for every character. I would set them up every time I saw something in the games that would have been potentially traumatic, including backstory stuff that came to light. Then I’d write down what the trauma was, when it occurred, and how I felt it would affect them (both immediately and long term). 

Pretty much everybody gets that Miles Edgeworth is traumatized. The game does a decent job of showing some of that, by giving him PTSD and mentioning his fear of elevators, using his recurring nightmares as a plot point, etc. But Miles is by FAR not the only one in the series traumatized. Pretty much every case is enough to send someone to therapy for a hell of a long time, but it’s not always highlighted as much as Miles, and I think it’s easy to brush everyone else’s trauma under the rug because their coping methods were a little more understated. I do think the evidence is there in the games, but it’s not obvious (Capcom puts a lot more subtlety in there than I initially would have expected. Either that or I’m adding subtext on my own and giving them too much credit. EITHER WAY, it did give me a lot to study and pick apart.)

One of the biggest themes in my writing is addressing and processing trauma (lol can you tell I have trauma I have worked on processing? hahaha). I tend to lean towards doing it in healthy and productive ways, as well, so I was HYPERFOCUSED on all the events happening to each individual character. By the end of the canon storylines, I had a pretty solid idea of what people still needed to work through and how things were holding them back, which is honestly how I arrived at some of the plotlines I did. They’re all engineered to be ways to push the characters where they need to be in order to heal. Or at least to grow (full healing is gonna take decades and y’all I can’t be writing this for the rest of my life haha)

In some cases, like with Phoenix and Miles and their relationship, I knew that it was going to involve a massive breaking point to get them anywhere. It’s been decades in game-time and they haven’t taken very many steps forward, which tells me that repression is so ingrained you basically have to make them completely snap and land in a place of “nothing left to lose” before they’d take any more steps. Hence the remote location and the cold temperatures and them working together and the closet scene and the hot tub scene and the spit-take scene and the obvious trap and...etc. Really had to slam their damn heads together repeatedly for this one. 

But their trauma, while being some of the most obvious, wasn’t the only kind I wanted to address. Like, seeing everything play out with Apollo and Dhurke, I just kept thinking how fuckin badly that would mess someone up, and that isn’t even considering what he’d gone through BEFORE that (former boss was a murderer, and the ways he found out weren’t the softest. Best friend murdered, and the circumstances around it ended up with him getting physically injured TWICE. There’s a lot going on with that poor boy.) And Maya, who is forever cheery in the games, always struck me as someone who hid any negative emotions at all costs, and holy shit she has to have a few. She’s been accused of murder, manipulated by family, her sister was murdered, she had to raise her cousin from a young age, she’s been kidnapped MULTIPLE TIMES, had her body taken over by someone that DEFINITELY wanted to kill her and her best friend. On top of that, the first games make it pretty clear she has some inferiority issues, and alllll those traumatic situations would have only fed into it. I think she got really good at covering that up rather than really good at feeling confident. 

Pretty much all the characters got trauma’d at one point or another, and the timeline over the span of canon basically meant that nobody ever had much time to recover before some other bullshit was happening. It’s why many of the characters in Indefensible, sometimes more than once, have opined about it being neverending or how they were losing hope that they’d ever have a whole year that was just normal. 

I’ve included so many scenes where they are just breaking down and talking about feelings, because holy fuck they all need to. lol It’s also why I ended up jumping on the FranMaya bandwagon so hard because the way that the pair of them are traumatized and how they handle it is very complementary to each other. I think they’re both able to pull the dark out and soothe it within one another, keep each other from overthinking things, and provide a sudden rock to lean on when things get difficult again. If they didn’t have each other, I think the second half of Indefensible wouldn’t work as well, because Franziska absolutely would have snapped irreparably. But, uh, that won’t make as much sense until later. ;)

Anyways, this was long and rambly and I could probably make a separate post about each individual character’s trauma and how the fic is designed to shine a spotlight on it and get them to start processing it. I THINK ABOUT THIS STUFF A LOT, OKAY?

Why Worm is the Perfect Gateway from YA to Fantasy/Sci-fi

I’m going to start off by saying I first read worm when I was 14 and while I thought it was cool I didn’t read past the leviathan arc and I didn’t go back until I was 17 where I started reading it again and loved every second of it. There’s a reason for this, I think, and because worms start off as a YA thing before becoming so much more with a solid foundation.

I was originally going to make a post that basically said: “Hot take: The thing that stops worm from being YA is the fact that characters “Good or Badness” is not determined by whether they agree with the main character or not” but its more than that and so I’m Going to make this post.

1. It starts off as a YA

Worm begins by giving the reader a lot of YA tropes, bullied at school, oppressive system, having a secret you are keeping from the rest of the group, Hypocritical authority figures(I’m coming back to this one), Not being handsome or pretty, Low Self-esteem, Characters called bad by the system being cool or secretly good and misunderstood(Coming back to this as well).

These tropes work because a lot of young adults see themselves in these charters because a lot of people feel like outsiders in these years see themselves as misunderstood and it's great, I'm not disparaging YA but YA isn’t made to challenge a reader (past Levi I felt legitimate anxiety reading Worm) it's made to entertain a reader and it does that by making truly care about characters. However, in Worm, it makes a character based off of those tropes and that is Taylor this doesn't mean much till we get past Levi but it is noticeable on rereads where you see her go out un-ready because, as it seems to me, she wants to go down in a blaze of glory, not some heroic ideal

Point is Worm starts off by being really appealing to YA readers.

2. Levi Arc / A break from YA / Violence in YA

Worms Un-YA-vacation actually starts a chapter before Levi. This is the point where a YA begins its conclusion, Threats have been faced they have grown together as a team and think they've got through the worst of it, now the true villain is revealed, there's a betrayal a twist happens and the heroes rally to prove themselves over whatever weird morality the villain has(Coming back to this as well)

In Worm, the Twist is Dinah Alcott, however, there is no betrayal, no secret villain, just villains doing villain things, only now Taylor (and by extension the reader) sees the victims to her crimes and the secret villain was Taylor. At this point, Tayor and her friends would come together and save Dinah and prove they were the real good guys all along except they don't the rest of the Undersiders are ok with it and that's a big break from YA plot. The character and her friends are supposed to be, unless they were deceiving the protagonist, “good.” Taylor freaks and runs but before we can deal with that (and we will) Levi attacks.

These days a lot of YA is “edgy” but that death is used for a reason, A Lot of times you'll hear something like “All these people died except him” or “She’s an elite assassin who killed all these people” another use of death in YA is to set stakes killing a whole bunch of named characters during the aforementioned betrayal to set stakes or to cause a character to unlock a new ability through grief. In either scenario, the Protag either avenges these deaths or is a main player in a battle the protagonist. In Worm, Taylor plays damage control, takes a stab and leviathan and Phoom! Broken spine. She is insignificant and that made me so afraid that I'd hear the words “Grue - deceased” that I put down the book for three years. It's real and it's scary.

Violence and Death aren’t trivialised or given lip service, it's real, it's respected and it's a theme and it makes you take it seriously. Fighting stops seeming cool.

3.Ensamble and Morality.

In my mind, you can split a YA protag into two types: A brave idealist in a world of cruel realists or in more edgy YA smart realist in a world where others are idiotic Idealists, in either the protags world view is the right one. Now It's hardly a groundbreaking idea that Taylor isn’t justified in doing bad things but I'm going to address how this idea is given to the audience.

I think it's fair to describe Taylor as a member of group two, In her mind, she's doing what should be done whilst her antagonists are trying to uphold a system that does not work, at least as far as she thinks. In a YA this would make those who are on her side good and those who oppose her bad, that's not the case in the Worm. A lot of the Undersiders are arguably bad people; they aren’t sanitised. More so the people who oppose Taylor are legitimately heroic and you know this because you got to see through the eyes of the BB Wards and you know they aren’t fake. You buy into the idea of them being Heros which makes you question it when Taylor opposes them but more so you feel conflicted. In YA you might feel bad for the antagonist who had a sad backstory which is why they are doing a “bad” thing but you don't in Worm (Because those are our protagonists) instead you're conflicted because the antagonist has a Solid argument for why they oppose Taylor that can’t be written off.

Basically, a YA would decide a character's Morality by whether they are on Taylor's side or not and worm takes a good look and subverts that specific trope in a way that's hard to ignore

It's worth noting that whilst other fantasy/sci-fi novels don’t really work with these tropes Worm takes them and morphs them to a point where you the reader become conflicted and unsure on what you think about Taylor by using established YA tropes you would only really buy into if you read a lot of YA (Which I did)

4. Fighting the System

The idea of an oppressive system and unfair authority is a big theme in YA and that's because it's relatable. Here's a quick sketch of a regime in YA it's full of hypocrites(Armsmaster) and Unfair and Malicious leaders who are either incapable if the MC is a realist or too brutal if the MC is an idealist (Alexandria and Eidolon) and when the organization is overturned (normally by the protag) the good members(Miss Militia, Chevalier, Legend) come into control and say that the MC was right the whole time and change their policies to suit the MC.

There's a problem however both Taylor and the System are Realists and Utilitarians, they have the same moral code. Not a new idea, but it challenges that specific Idea of what an Antagonistic organization is supposed to be.

The Hypocrite (Armsmaster) takes stock, and in a YA would realize he's been criticizing the MC for doing the same stuff he is and then stop criticizing and supporting the MC, but here he takes a good look at himself realizes he's been a hypocrite and changes his behaviour! Armsmaster straight up criticizes the way he behaves in the past, becomes a better person and that makes him even more of an antagonist for Taylor which makes you question her even more.

Finally, When The good guys get in charge of the organization they remain Taylors antagonists Chev and MM still have an issue with the way Taylor operates and tell her if she doesn't comply she gets prison

5.Conclusion

I used to read a lot of YA back in the and I think it's worth noting Worms interaction with YA because it takes YA tropes and dynamics that someone who reads YA automatically assumes and then twists them breaking your assumed ideas about things in a way that makes you question things. And the reason I think this is important is because as I said Earlier YA exists to entertain it is safe, comfortable and fun. But Literature can be more engaging if you want it to be.

The best works of Fantasy/ Sci-fi Drag of those comfort zones. The Way of Kings makes you think about coping with depression and dealing with systems that keep the disadvantaged and exploited docile, I-Robot makes you question what defines personhood, except those works can be daunting. Worm takes a YA reader and gives them what they want for a bit until things start to descend into the groundwork of morality and make you look at it. In a YA novel, utilitarianism and trauma would be character traits used to define a character. In Worm you are forced to question it, to examine it and then come to your own decision, yes the world was ultimately saved through utilitarianism but it could have been done better. Trauma was weaponized, but it was a trauma Taylor had too.

When I reached the end of Worm, I found that YA just wasn't as engaging, and I went looking for a book that felt more real and had real themes, stuff that Worm showed me and that's why I think is a great gateway into Fantasy and Sci-Fi

dskjdsajkldsajkldsaljkdsa okay okay get ready for an info dump lol At the current moment our group consists of: (V) A brooding human fighter who (kidnapped) adopted my character because he's secretly soft, (R) An asshole noble of a druid who currently is missing cuz he ran away during a fight with some tree giants, (Oli, aka my character) an artic half-elf (???) rogue who is a literal 4'8, 62 pound, touch starved 12 year old with extreme trust issues and a high kill count,

(Grandpa) A wizard dragonborn who my character adores and almost killed on accident due to an issue with a too fast and exciting griffin ride, (BB) A tiefling monk who can kill you easily but my character follows her around like a lost puppy because she is the groups big sister, (T) an CN asshole of a eladrin bard whom I love and who is also a horrible influence on my character, (Yee-Haw) a human fighter who is very southern and very dumb and is the fun uncle of the group (Bas) our human paladin who is both our only healer and a major alcoholic and himbo, and finally our latest edition (L) another human fighter who tries his best and also kinda just had his entire (npc) team murdered during a fight. And as for our animal friends we have Cat who is my characters best friend, Boar, who is a Boar that likes my character and follows them around. We have Owl Bear, who is an owl bear cub my character found, we have Rat, who is a Rat V gave to my character, We have Snake who Bas gave to my character and we have Fox who....V also gave to my character....and finally we have Kodiak who is a griffin my character befriended, We visited her recently and her eggs will be hatching soon and then my character will have four griffons :) .....My character has a lot of animal friends lol. And they aren't very good at naming them as you can tell. Currently our group is on the way to a place called Reme, where the order is located. The Order being a major group that controls a good portion of the trade that V, Bas, and L are apart of. We're currently supposed to be delivering a letter. And then last session we got attack by the technical maybe BBEG of this Campaign. Which are two half-dragons who are a part of this big group of half-dragons called the Ten headed dragons. We weren't just fighting two half-dragons, one of which was already killed twice and brought back to life and the other who was invisible, we were also fighting a bunch of bandits, and two mages. It was a rough fight, L's whole team (8 npc's) were killed and our carriage (We usually travel on foot but Grandpa broke his leg so he needed help) was set on fire and literally everyone went down except for my character and BB. But thankfully everyone survived (Aside from the npc's and horses rip) We were trying to rest, which included a moment where my character and V bonded and got a little drunk (Well, My character got a little drunk. But V rolled a 3 for his con save and got shitfaced lol) But my character was awake and heard some voices and woke everyone up to go hide in the woods while they went and checked. They found someone in a cloak, who teleported the two half-dragons corpses' away, and even though my character rolled really well on stealth the cloak dude had a detection spell of sorts up and he knows that they are currently there. And there's where my DM ended that session :,) And that's where it is so far! I'll have to add a part 2 once we have next session so I can say what goes down with my PC :D But a LOT of stuff has happened in the campaign, tons of shenanigan's and bad rolls lol. But feel free to ask if ur interested in previous stuff or about characters backstories (There's only so much I can say for the other characters but i can tell u Oli's lol)
