Hey gharashambles, I was wondering what happened to the fanfiction you wrote about Regis, detlaff, and your OC Maina? I've been scouring the web for it but I can't find it for the life of me! Was it removed/privated?
I’m pretty sure you’re thinking of To Bloom by the amazing Mackallackattack! If you log in you should be able to read it!
Maina is theirs, I was just obsessed with the fic! The babies! The batsex! The ART!! The incredible amount of angst!

Okay so I was never a huge Masters of the Universe fan, I viewed it as very stereotypical and shallow, you know dude bros just using nostalgia to win every argument and being creeply horny for half naked characters (seriously why does nobody wear pants in that show?). You know, I never liked Conan the Barbarian/Red Sonia type of stuff. But I gave the old show a chance and I found out that it had a lot of heart and good caring effort and intention behind it. It was a wholesome kids show. I was gladly wrong.
So it kind of shook me that Kevin Smith was in charge of the new He-Man show. And look, I’m sure the dude’s a cool, chill, kind guy, but I’m familiar with his work and I can’t help but facepalm and sigh in the most cartoony way possible. And if you don’t know what that means and you’re a really big fan of Kevin Smith, let me give you an example.
Bruce Fucking Timm. In the eyes of some is the second coming of Christ, because he made those DC cartoons (which I love), because he created your childhood. And at the surface his Batman run is amazing and inspiring and the perfect, purest distilled form of Batman. That’s on the surface, but, BUT, if you start chipping down on the layers, it gets weirder. The dude, literally, has a serious hard on for bat sex, Batman/Batgirl sex, and it’s weird. And I don’t care if you pull out some evidence that Babs is in her 20s and it’s not weird because she’s an adult. She was dating Dick, Bruce’s son! That’s like your dad having sex with your girlfriend. And he goes out of his way to get you into it. There was no reason for that bat sex scene in the Killing Joke, it’s just.... it feels gross. And Timm is like proud of it. Plus that scene where Atom rides in Diana’s cleavage. Or that deleted comic book page of Barbara stripping down in a crowd of people just to put on her costume. It’s fucking weird!!! And please, please don’t get me started on Batman and Harley Quinn. That’s just an hour of Bruce Timm cumming on a script, think about his wet dreams. But the executives and editors are like, well he’s Bruce Timm we gotta suck his dick, he’s the greatest. And to bring it all around, Kevin Smith gives me the same obnoxious vibes.
Mark my words, there will be a scene where a man and a woman are at a party, and the party’s under attack, and either the man will push the woman out of the way of a laser blast or something, or the woman will pull the man out of harms way, which will end with the man face planting into the woman’s boobs. Hahahaha, isn’t this awkward. It’s obnoxious, it’s dumb, I cringe every time.
Keep whatever weird shit your into at home, don’t bring it into work.
I have faith in people. But I don’t have faith that people will keep it in their pants.

Barbara Gordon as Batgirl is so perved on by DC fandom AND creators one writer literally dedicated a whole issue to making Cassandra Cain feel inferior to her because she will never be such a sex icon Barbara was. DC rebooted the entire universe to put Barbara into spandex again, one time her book was resonating with younger fans they botched it to make her wear a skintight suit again. She has over 2000 entries on Rule34. Bruce Timm been fetishizing her to the point he created #Batsex scene in Killing Joke movie. But sure, Cass is the one who is the “most fetishized” Batgirl. On what fucking planet, the Bizzaro World?

It still amazes me how many times in comics various authors and artists specifically said that Joker is in love with Bats but the audience still screams no homo
It's basically the same situation with NBC Hannibal from few years ago I just had no idea how long it has been for DC in this case
I swear to god they could have batsex with batprotection and some people would still say it's just Joker being crazy and flirty
Which is bad enough in its own because it's basically saying that people with mental illness can't have serious relationships and it's just then being "crazy" or "confused" and it just SCREAMS ableism

did you see that they are making a birds of prey comic with the same lineup as the movie (minus cass)? im sure the timing is a sheer coincidence, also I don't think babs is gonna be on the team. having comic huntress and black canary teaming up with Harley seems even more hard to believe than the movie versions, because at least we don't know anything about the movie versions...
They also moved it from the main continuity into Black Label.
I do not have any hopes for it whatsoever. Brian Azzarello is writing it and let me get quick rundown on the last two times he wrote Harley
First was in the Joker aaaand...you know that scene in Suicide Squad where Harley is poledancing and then Joker offers a night with her to a gangster and kills him when he refuses? Imagine this except Harley does a full-on striptease and then reverse striptease dressing up in her harlequin outfit and the guy Joker offered her agrees, Harley leads him backstage only for Joker to skin him alive from the neck down and made his convulsing body poledance on stage. That’s what happens in this book.
The second time was Batman: Damned. You know, that one where Joker dies so Harley dressed up like him and tries to rape Batman in a scene reminiscent of infamous Batsex scene from Killing Joke movie (which Azzarello co-wrote) only for Batman to strangle her.
I have zero faith in this book.

One Bad Day...Thoughts on Batman: The Killing Joke
Warning: This post’s gonna be REAAAAAL LONG (I apologize now). This also contains a decent amount of spoilers for the film adaptation of Batman: The Killing Joke. If you haven’t watched it yet (or haven’t read the comic book it’s based off of), do so (but actually read the comic book).
Some Background: Killing Joke is a New York Times Best-Selling graphic novel released in 1988 written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Brian Bollard. It was their interpretation of the Joker’s backstory and psychology, and the result is easily one of the best comics of all time. It not only made Joker’s origin tragic, but it also had an effect on the main continuity by including the shooting and paralysis of Barbara Gordan (a.k.a. Batgirl), which then led to her becoming Oracle. It’s a groundbreaking graphic novel that did a lot of great things. So naturally, when news broke in early 2016 that a film adaptation of the beloved one-shot was not just happening, but starred Kevin Conroy, Tara Strong, and Mark Hamil, I was very excited.
Note: Technically the news broke in 2015 that a movie was happening. I didn’t hear about it until 2016. Technicalities. Deal with it.
I immediately pre-ordered the film on Amazon as soon as I was able to. Then, months later, as the film was premiered at SDCC and shown for one night only through Fathom Events at the Cinema, I began to find lots of mixed opinions from many people on my Facebook feed, all having to do with Killing Joke.
But my morbid curiosity won over, and so on Sunday night, I got together with two friends and we watched Killing Joke. And as the credits rolled, I was left very conflicted. I’m conflicted because while Killing Joke does a lot of stuff incredibly well, it also makes a lot of very weird decisions that don’t really make a lot of sense.
**LAST CHANCE TO LEAVE THIS POST NOW. SPOILERS INCOMING**
PROBLEMS
My first issue comes with the film’s rating. In the United States, Killing Joke was given an R-rating for “Some bloody images and disturbing content”. This isn’t necessarily a surprise, given the source material’s dark tones. One small problem: they don’t take advantage of that rating, at all. This is primarily noticeable whenever the characters attempt to curse--I say “attempt” because they actually don’t. This movie dodges the use of the f-word so many times that it’s honestly off-putting. In my first viewing, I only heard one person actually curse, and it was almost an hour in. If you are making a film that has an R-rating, utilize it and throw in some explicit language. If the Arkham series can do it, you can too. There’s also way less nudity in the film than the graphic novel depicts (mostly of shots of Commissioner Gordon’s ass), which is odd because it’s not even that offensive. If Idina Menzel can show her ass in the movie adaptation of Jonathan Larson’s RENT (which, for the record, was rated PG-13), then there’s no reason why a few shots of Comissioner Gordon’s ass can’t be present here.
My second issue with Killing Joke is with some of the visuals. Most of the time, it’s the same animation style we have loved for years. However, in a handful of places, there are some assets (mostly cars in the prologue’s chase scenes) that are clearly CG-I and they clash so badly with the traditional animation style that they stand out, especially when multiple cuts show characters in said vehicles. It’s off-putting, even when it’s the god damn Batmobile. There’s also a clear outline on Bats when he fights near a CG-I carousel in the carnival later on in the film.
My third issue (and the largest one) comes with the newest additions to the story--specifically, the 32 minute prologue that concerns Barbara Gordon (a.k.a. Batgirl). According to the writers, this was added to show what Batgirl had before Joker shoots her. I’m totally behind this concept, and I completely get why they decided to throw this in. My problem is not with the concept, it’s with the execution. Unfortunately, the added prologue is about 15 minutes too long, not very well written, and completely unrelated to the actual plotline. They even imply how unrelated it is on the back of the Blu-Ray case!
“[Good summary about the plot everyone is watching this movie for]. Featuring a gripping prologue spotlight Barbara Gordon (Batgirl)...”
Even the case implies that the prologue adds nothing. But let’s unpack the whole thing (spoilers abound: obviously).
The film begins with Batman and Batgirl trying (and somewhat succeeding) to stop a robbery. The two leaders escape, where we learn that one of them, a sleezy douchebag by the name of Paris Franz (yes that is his name), just so happens to be the nephew of crime boss Carlos Francesco (who, by the way, only appears here). Do we care about Carlos Fancesco? Not really, but we do get to hear that Paris thinks Batgirl is hot AF, and then we switch to a library where Barbara Gordon and her friend Reece talk about men (Reece is hysterical) because this movie needs to add sexual tension for something that we’ll get to later. At some point during this scene, Barbara discovers that Frenchy is about to commit another robbery and goes to stop it. It doesn’t go so well and Paris escapes, but after this happens, Batman and Batgirl start having this conflict that’s basically this:
BATGIRL: I wanna do the thing. BATMAN: No. I don’t want you to do the thing. BATGIRL: Why not? BATMAN: Because this is my franchise and what I say goes. Also I don’t want you to get hurt.
That conflict in a nutshell.
But things take a weird turn. Paris, who if you remember, though Batgirl was hot, starts leaving video messages for Batgirl. So basically, he turns into every dude on Tinder. It’s weird and creepy, but it advances the conflict between Batgirl and Batman that I mentioned earlier, so there’s that. Not like it affects anything, because Batgirl tracks down all of Frenchy’s video messages anyway and then comes across Carlos Francesco’s bloody corpse stuffed in a closet in his room. This is a big deal because apparently Francesco is one of the biggest bosses in Gotham (DC apparently forgot about the Falcone fam) and so this leads to more fighting and Batman has to jump in and help.
This leads to a rather big fight between Batman and Batgirl, where we get this lovely piece of dialogue:
BATMAN: You haven’t been taken to the edge yet. BATGIRL: The edge of what?! BATMAN: The abyss, the place where you don’t care anymore. Where all hope dies.
Uhhhh DC? Why are you writing Batman like an angsty 15-year old who only shops at Hot Topic? Batman doesn’t need to be angsty.
ANYWAY, this pisses off Batgirl even more and she starts swinging at Batman. Batman doesn’t put up much of a fight, and gets pinned to the ground.
And then this happens:
This is an actual thing that happens in Killing Joke. The whole conflict is dropped completely and they bone on a rooftop.
Fucking what?
Now aside from how weird this is considering that Barbara Gordon’s relationship to Bruce Wayne/Batman has been more of a father/daughter sort than a romantic interest, my main issue with this is that it comes out of absolutely nowhere, and it actually adversely affects Barbara’s plot-arc. If they hadn’t just made it a sex scene, it would have probably been a powerful dramatic moment, but NOPE. Barbara basically becomes another stereotype, and it totally made me care much less about her as a result. What makes it worse is that Batman gets all avoid-y, and when Batgirl tries to talk to him about it, she says this:
BATGIRL: It was just sex for God’s sake. It doesn’t have to mean anything. It’s not like we have to care, I don’t care. You don’t care. We just go back like it was. That’s all.
Oh my god what the hell.
ANYWAY, moving on, Batman then gets ambushed by Paris and his gang, prompting Batgirl to jump in and save his ass by beating the everloving crap out of Paris. Frenchy gets locked up, and Barbara decides to retire as Batgirl and find something else to do. And the prologue ends about 28 or so minutes in.
Then after a 3-minute transitional scene, we get to Arkham Asylum, where we finally being the story we’ve been wanting.
THE ADAPTATION OF THE SOURCE MATERIAL
And this is where I get very conflicted: because from the moment Batman arrives at Arkham Asylum, the movie essentially takes every line and shot from the graphic novel and throws it on screen almost verbatum, with some alterations of lines. And for the most part, it’s incredible. The writing is just as solid on film as it is in the graphic novel, and the voice acting by Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamil and Tara Strong is flawless. The brutal scene when Joker shoots Barbara Gordon and abducts Comissioner Gordon is intense and powerful. The bleeding tears dripping from Joker after he falls into the vat at Ace Chemicals is haunting. When Killing Joke follows the source material, the film soars.
There are a few gripes I have about it.
1) The flashback sequences in color are a little weird. The graphic novel presented flashbacks in black and white and had a couple of items red (like the Red Hood, and lobsters) to give a stark contrast. That’s gone in the film, and I sort of wish they did that.
2) The sideshow freaks have a slightly larger role in the movie (mostly adding more combat) which doesn’t really add much...though they low-key shade Trump in a new scene. (Intentional? Probably not, but considering the political year, interesting)
3) Super nitpick: In Joker’s monologue about madness, the line “Madness is the emergency exit” is cut. It’s my favorite line, and would have been great at the end of the dialogue. But it got cut, and that makes me sad.
4) The montage of Batman looking for info about Joker has some ridiculous lines such as: “I’m gonna count to 10. One...Nine...” and “Swear to me”. Wow ok.
There were some good changes: like Joker’s monologue about having a past taking place in an upside down recreation of his apartment fit instead of the hall of mirrors. It worked well. But most of the changes weren’t really needed.
OVERALL
When it comes to the source material, Batman: The Killing Joke is faithful and does an amazing job at bringing the graphic novel to life. However, the film suffers from that half-hour prologue that doesn’t need to be there to begin with. I will not lie when I say that I’m a little disappointed.
Final Score: 6/10
