Mix 1–3 tsp of ground Cinnamon powder in 1 cup of hot water. Let it steep for 10 minutes. Strain & drink to cure diarrhea.
For Cough:
Make a tea with ½ tsp ginger, ¼ tsp cinnamon & 1 clove per 1 cup of water. Sweeten with 1 tsp honey & drink.
Expectorant Cough Syrup:
120 ml water 120 ml honey 1–2 tsp dried mullein leaves 1–2 tsp dried white horehound herb 1–2 tsp dried rosemary leaves 1–2 tsp powdered or chopped cinnamon bark 1–2 tsp dried chopped ginger 1 pinch of cayenne Combine all ingredients in a small saucepan. Bring to the boil, then lower the heat. Simmer, uncovered, until the mixture has reduced by about one-half. Remove from the heat & strain. Cool to room temperature. Take 1 tsp as often as every 2 hours. Store in the refrigerator.
Cinnamon & Scallion Tea for Cold & Flu:
Finely chop one scallion. Put it into a teacup & add 2 slices of raw ginger & dash of powdered cinnamon. Fill the cup with hot water, let the herbs steep & drink the tea. Cinnamon & ginger induce sweating, while scallion clears sinuses.
Cinnamon for diabetes 2:
Take at least 1/2 teaspoon a day, which is critical to “soften” the cell membranes. Cinnamon mimics insulin, thus it may lower your need for insulin immediately.
Cinnamon-Ginger Tea for Menstrual Difficulties:
1 tsp chopped cinnamon bark 1 tsp chopped dried ginger or freshly grated ginger root Pour 1 cup boiling water over the herbs. Cover & let steep for ca 30 minutes. Strain & sweeten with honey. Sip slowly. Prepare & drink as often as needed, until cramps subside. Both cinnamon & ginger are reliable aids for relieving stomach & menstrual cramps. Herbal Decoction for Uterine Tumors:
1 part turmeric 1 1/2 parts licorice root 4 parts cinnamon bark 5 parts peach seed Simmer slowly 30 g of dried herbs in 700 ml of water for 30–60 minutes in a covered pot. Strain through a fine-mesh, stainless-steel strainer lined with cheesecloth. Discard the cinnamon, then bottle the liquid. Take ½ tsp 2x a day for 5 days. Continue in this manner for several weeks, or until blood sugar levels normalize.
A Soup for Joint Pain:
Cook until done 1 cup pearl barley with 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1 pinch saffron & 1 piece Dong Quai (tang kuei) Add a pinch of following herbs as needed. For water retention: 10 juniper berries For weakness & chills: fenugreek or ginger
Warming Happiness Tea:
handful of lime flowers 1 orange,wash & slice sprinkle of cinnamon or bit of cinnamon bark Place the herbs & orange & cinnamon into the heat proof jug. Pour over ~1 l boiling water, let infuse, covered 5–10 min. Drink while warm with honey.
BEAUTY:
For Bad Breath boil 1 tsp cinnamon in 1 cup of water. Cool. Use frequently as a mouthwash.
Warming Cinnamon Bath Salts:
3 tbsp cinnamon powder 1 tbsp ginger root powder 1 cup sea salt Stir the powdered herbs into the salt. Store in a sealed glass container. Add ¼ cup of the bath salts to a bathtub filled with warm water. Stir well.
For acne, blackheads & pimples mix finely ground cinnamon powder in 1 tsp lime juice & apply on affected areas frequently.
To improve the complexion add a pinch of cinnamon powder to ¼ tsp honey & apply on the face. Let it dry then wash it with water.

Cleansing Bath Ritual for New Months

This ritual is typically preformed in the first of every month to welcome the new opportunities and energies for the month ahead of us.
Start by cleaning your bathroom as this will start the ritual off by cleaninsing and ridding all negativity. You should also declutter everything you do not use as well, only keeping things you are going to use. This helps physically declutter your mind as well. You should also make sure that you have fresh, clean pajamas and fresh bedding on your bed as well.
You should lay your pjs and towel on the radiator. You should also make sure you have a some slippers or bed socks ready.
After the bathroom is clean, remove the clothes you used to clean and place them outside the bathroom.
Light a white candle used for smudging and go around the room in each corner starting from bottom working your way up cleansing all darkness that may have become trapped. You should definitely do a lot of cleansing around the toilet as well as this is where literal shit goes.
Once your bathroom is clean and the smudging has been done, fill your bath with hot water.
In the bath add:
- Lavender oil (homemade)
- Sage (used for protection and cleansing of unwanted energy’s)
- Salt (only a small amount as to much can dry out skin)
- Rose petals
- Rosemary (used for protection and aura washing)
- Thyme (typically used to banish unwanted emotions)
Light a candle carved with your intention on banishing dark/negative energies and place it in corner of bath where you will be able to see it.
Add more white candles as these are used for purity and also great for light as you may like to switch off the main light before you enter the bath.
Before you get in the bath, make sure you have a glass of detox water. Add cucumber, lemon, lime, and even ginger if you wish. Once you have your water, candles, and bath ready, and you have removed your clothes, stand in front of the mirror and chant 3 times:
“I call upon the elements of earth, fire, air, water, spirit, and the deities.
It is a new month, a new start. Please bless me.
Help guide and support and remove all negativity.
This is my will, so mote it be."
Then enter the bath. You may like to play meditateive or drumming music to help you mediate and focus on the candle light of the banishing candle. Focus on removing all of the negative emotions from yourself, and focus on all the good you have in your life and all of the things you want to accomplish this month. As you wash, you are washing away all the darkness. The water that is touching you is layering you in a layer of protective light.
Soak your body for around 45mins to an hour. After you have soaked, stand up in the bath and, again, look in the mirror and thank the elements, the spirit, and the deities by chanting 3 times:
“I thank the elements earth, fire, air, water, she, and the deities.
I thank you for the help and for blessing me.
I have now washed away all the negativity,
And I have embraced the love, luck, and support you have laid on to me.
This is my will, so mote it be."
Leave the bath, dry yourself, and put your fresh clean pjs on.
Empty the bath and meditate on the bathroom floor facing the bath until it’s empty. As you meditate, imagine the water as the negativity, and how it's all being washed away.
Wash out the bath with the shower head to make sure all the negativity has been removed.
Take your white candle used for smudging and cleanse your body, especially near your head and heart.
After this, drink the detox water and try to do this in one go. As you drink it, will all the bad dark stuff inside away when the water touches it.
The open the bathroom window (if you have one. If not, the bathroom door will suffice) to let any negativities leave through. Blow out all the candles and move them back to my sacred space.

In building the hotel, co-owners Robert De Niro (actor) and Ira Drukier (iconic hotelier) enlisted master craftsmen – considered “living national treasures” in Japan – to dismantle a 250-year-old barn there and rebuild it by hand, using wooden pegs, as the focal point of the spa.

“I remember,” Spa Director Cristina Paradelo tells me as I sit wrapped in my to-the-knee blue kimono, awaiting my Bamboo Glow treatment, a spa signature. “They [De Niro and Drukier] flew in ten craftsmen from Japan. None spoke a word of English. They started working at 6 a.m. every day, and finished in just six weeks. Not one nail was used.”
The authenticity of the spa design inspired the traditional Japanese and other Asian (Chinese, Thai) treatments for which Shibui Spa is now known. My treatment, “Bamboo Glow,” begins with a body scrub in a private candlelit room, where I slip face-down onto a warmly heated massage table. “In designing Shibui, Mr. [Robert] De Niro was inspired by his own trip to Japan, and wanted to recreate the authenticity of that experience. From the beginning, I knew I wanted the menu to complement that with a strong Eastern influence – Japanese, definitely, but also Chinese and Thai modalities.”
“Our clientele is very savvy,” Cristina continues. “They’re well-traveled, have experienced spa treatments and healing rituals all over the world. But we’ve managed to surprise a fair number of them, and I’m proud of that.”

“I was very attracted to red flower, because it parallels on so many levels what The Greenwich Hotel is all about. Full Ayurvedic Daily Routine
If you didn’t make my workshop on Ayurvedic Self-Care: Daily Routine (Dinacharya) at the Sukhava Bodhe Yoga & Music Festival you’ll find an outline below with links to resources. 
The Ayurvedic daily routine balances the body, mind, and spirit. It serves as everyday preventative medicine to lower risk of disease, increase vitality, and promote longevity.
This is a basic routine. It’s important to identify your primary dosha (or primary imbalance) and adjust accordingly. You can see an Ayurvedic practitioner to do that, like me. Contact me to set up a free phone session to find out how I go about this in person or by phone/Skype. 
1. Vata Time (air + ether doshas): 2AM - 6AM
Ideal time for spiritual practice; always start with gentle pranayama and meditation like nadi shodhana to neutralize the doshas
Waking
Go to bed early (by 10PM)  in order to wake up early naturally
The best time to wake is between 4 and 6 AM.
It’s the most sattvic, or peaceful, time of day.
Hydrate
Drink a glass or two of warm or room-temperature water
This flushes toxins, wakes up digestion, and prepares the body for elimination
Add a fresh slice of lime, lemon (pH balancing) or ginger (warming, stimulating)
Elimination
Sit on the toilet first thing; this will stimulate your system to empty both bladder and colon.
Cleanse the senses
Nasya: later in the morning or before bed, anoint the inside of the nostrils with a nasya oil (here’s a great line of nasyas)
Splash face with cool or warm water (avoid harsh soaps) depending on the season
Spritz the face with a pure rose water spray (avoid synthetic fragrance), drop rose water and saline solution in the eyes 
Oil pulling: swish with sesame or coconut oil in the mouth for 5-15 minutes, spit out, and rinse mouth with warm water; optional: gargle with warm salted water, adding turmeric to cleanse the mouth and throat (I like this one)
Anoint body with oil (see Abhyanga below; don't forget to rub oil inside ears and nostrils using fingers)
Neti (nasal irrigation): use a neti pot with filtered water and neti pot salt 
Brush teeth and scrape tongue 
2. Kapha Time (earth/water): 6AM - 10AM   
Abhyanga (self-massage)
Vata-types: 4-5 times a week
Pitta-types: 3-4 times a week
Kapha-types: 1-2 times a week
Lightly brush the whole body with a soft body brush or silk gloves
Anoint the whole body with oil, starting at the head down to the trunk; begin again at the extremities and work towards the body; long strokes on the bones, circles at the joints; spend more time on head/face/scalp, hands, and feet.
Shower or bathe after the self-message (use a natural shampoo; only use a mild soap in “strategic” areas)
On non-abhyanga days, you can do a quick application with less oil and allow it to absorb before putting on clothes (5-10 minutes); or just focus on head/scalp, hands, and feet
You can use a dosha-specific oil or a seasonal one (links to some of my favorites below)
Vata = Fall/Winter
Kapha = Spring
Pitta = Summer
Tridoshic = All Seasons/ All Doshas
Exercise
Yoga (on an empty stomach)
Outdoor walk, etc. (a light breakfast okay)
Breakfast
Breakfast is usually the lightest, smallest meal as digestion is not very strong yet
Simple, nourishing foods like cooked fruit (avoid raw) or porridge
Kapha-types can skip this meal to boost their agni
Eat by 8AM
Try to focus on seasonal foods as much as possible with all meals. Check out these seasonal grocery list for summer and fall/winter. 
3. Pitta Time (fire + water doshas): 10AM - 2PM
Work
The most productive time of the day is from 10AM - 2PM. Use this time to get things done.
Pitta types may start to feel hungry by 10AM and may have a small snack.
Fresh fruit is the ideal snack or something with substance like nuts.
Raw fruit should be eaten by itself; otherwise, it may compromise the agni.
Avoid caffeine, sugary sweets, and salty crunchy snacks.
Lunch
The midday meal should be the largest one at or near noon. Vata and Pitta-types may like to eat a little earlier.
Hardest to digest foods are eaten at this time as agni is the strongest (meat, dense protein like beans, nuts or cheese, raw vegetables)
Sip small amounts of water with meals to avoid drowning the agni; the best time to hydrate around meals is 20 minutes before a meal
Afterwards, get some fresh air and go for a relaxed walk if you can (no devices)
4. Vata Time: 2PM - 6PM
A good time for creative pursuits, reflection, writing, and looking ahead
Energy starts to wane at this time
Make time for 4PM tea time; sit down away from work with a cup of herbal tea and a light snack like fresh fruit; get fresh air whenever possible
Restful, quiet, calm activities are best at this time
5. Kapha Time: 6PM - 10PM
If you exercise during this time, do so as early as you can, otherwise it can interfere with sleep.
Dinner
As the agni simmers down to embers, digestive fire is lowered and dinner is nourishing and lighter like soups or dal; one pot meals are easiest to digest
Easy to digest proteins are ideal; mainly plant or dairy based
Try to eat before sundown and at least 3 hours before bed
Go for a relaxed walk to aid digestion
For a nightly fast, try to abstain from food for 12 hours total (i.e., 7PM - 7AM)
Relaxation
Use this time to relax and create calm at the end of your day
Lower lights or use less lights so your endocrine system understands that the time for sleep is near; this helps the whole body to prepare for sleep
Avoid or limit screen time; turn off all devices to get at least 1 hour of uninterrupted quiet time
Prepare for the next day
This is when I get things ready for the next day like soaking grains, nuts, or legumes or preparing sourdough starter for the next day of baking. Why do this?
Bedtime
In/around bed:
Yoga stretching or gentle postures, tai chi, qi gong
Use calming nasya to aid in sleep. I love this one. 
Rub calming oil on soles of feet (ashwagandha, jatamansi, skullcap, Sleep Easy) or in scalp (bhringaraj or Healthy Hair)
I like to rub bhringaraj oil on my scalp on evenings before I plan to take a shower in the morning. It also helps to take the edge off of hectic mornings. Here’s the one I use. Or I will rub Sleep Easy oil on my feet. 
Go to bed by 10PM
9:30PM for Vata-types
10PM for Pitta-types
10:30PM for Kapha-types
Turn off and unplug all devices if kept at bedside; avoid electronics in bedroom if possible
6. Pitta Time 10PM-2AM
As the body rests during sleep, the body is busy doing many things and needs to be at rest to do these things well
Detoxing all the tissues of body starting with the liver
The brain eliminates toxic byproducts, saves new memories, and eliminates excess information
Blood pressure drops, body temperature drops (a cool room can help with falling asleep)
Growth hormones are released to repair damaged cells and create new ones.
You should feel rested in the morning when you awake; if not, you’re not getting enough sleep; you should wake naturally before your alarm goes off
Sleep loss increases the risk of health problems and causes hundreds of driving accidents
Good sleep will effect how well you function the next day: physically, emotionally, mentally. This is especially true for children. Find out how many hours your kids need here.

Hainan Chicken Rice 海南���饭 (Hai3 Nan2 Ji1 Fan4)
By popular request! Hainan Chicken Rice is a Southern Chinese dish that followed Chinese migrants throughout Southeast Asia. It’s even considered one of the “national dishes” of Singapore. In my opinion the “secret technique” behind Hainan chicken is the immediate ice bath after removing them from the poaching liquid. This gives the chicken a tender texture and makes the overall dish very refreshing.
Hainan Chicken Rice is also considered a “Kung Fu Dish” 功夫菜 , no this doesn’t mean you are cutting the vegetables with a spinning backhand fist… Actually the word “kung fu” describes a skill or discipline that needs to be learned through hard work and practice. There are so many variable that you can tune to perfect a dish that looks so simple. Even more, the most famous restaurants poach their chickens in a master stock that has been developed over decades. (This means each chicken is poached in the same stock just with more aromatics and water added as necessary).
When you are poaching the chickens in your kitchen, just imagine you are at a Singaporean hawker center enduring the 35 degrees C / 95 degrees F year-round weather. You’ll be rewarded with delicately flavored chicken, savory rice and an amazing stock for soup (or saving for next time). Enjoy with an ice-cold Tiger beer or lemon-lime soda.  (Serves 4-6)

Ingredients
Chicken
2 Chickens (roughly 1.5kg / 3.3lbs each)
Coarse sea salt
4 ‘fingers’ of ginger
2 entire leeks (or 2 bunches of scallions / green onions)
1 handful (~3 Tbsp) of dried pandan leaf (If you don’t have this don’t worry. I feel as though an equivalent amount of fresh cilantro could be an acceptable replacement)
Water, to cover
Rice
3 scoops of rice (2.25 cups)
3 cups of chicken poaching stock (either made previously or prepared after making the chicken)
5 cloves of garlic
Chili Sauce
6 red chilies
2 ‘fingers’ of ginger
5 cloves of garlic
1 tsp. sesame oil
2 tsp. salt
¼ cup lime juice
1 Tbsp. vinegar
¼ cup chicken poaching stock (or enough to achieve a light consistency, not a paste)
Sweet Soy Sauce
½ cup water
½ cup dark soy sauce
3 Tbsp. rock sugar (Sugar in the Raw could be a decent replacement)
 Garnish
Cucumber
Carrot

Instructions 
Your Hainan chicken will get better the more often you make it. Firstly because of the practice, secondly because you’ll have stock on hand so you can prepare the chicken and the rice at the same time. If you are pressed for time, you can always substitute store-bought chicken broth with a few extra slices of ginger and scallions thrown into your rice cooker.
Start by preparing all of your aromatics. Peel the ginger under the sink with the back of your spoon (best trick ever). Slice into mediumly thin (¼ inch) pieces. Wash and then cut the leeks into roughly 4 inch sections. Peel, smash and then mince the garlic cloves. Remove the tops of the chilies and chop roughly. If you want to reduce some of the heat, remove some of the seeds as well.
Now prepare the chickens. First, rinse them under cold water and then remove any large pieces of excess fat / skin. Double check around the head and tail. Now you are essentially going to give the chickens a facial with the coarse sea salt. Scoop maybe a teaspoon of salt into your fingers and scrub the skin of the chickens. You want exfoliate and rinse away any gunk and remove any small hairs remaining. Repeat until your chickens are looking “shiny”.
Stuff the chickens with the ginger and leeks. Add any remaining directly into your stockpot with the pandan leaf. Add about 2 quarts of water to your stock pot and bring to boil. Reduce the heat (to avoid burning yourself) and carefully put in your chickens, breast side up. You actually want the chickens to float a little in the water, with the breast peeking out of the water to avoid getting overcooked and too dry. Add water to adjust the level as necessary and bring back to a boil. As soon as the water boils again, turn off the heat and cover your pot. The chicken will poach in water as it cools for the next 45-50 minutes.
When the time is up, carefully lift chickens out of the pot (I recommend sticking a wooden spoon handle into the body cavity so you don’t tear the delicate skin). Then immediately plunge them into a waiting ice water bath. Allow to chill of 5-10 minutes and then dry off with a clean paper towel. At this point you can wrap the chicken in plastic wrap and keep in the fridge as you make the rice.
Prepare the rice in your rice cooker as you normally would, but replace the water with the chicken stock you just made (strain as necessary). Don’t forget to add your minced garlic.
For the chili sauce, just throw all of the ingredients into your food processor or blender. Control the consistency of the sauce by adding more or less of the chicken stock.
Make the sweet soy dipping sauce in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Dissolve the sugar in the soy and water mixture, stirring slowly to remove clumps and prevent burning.
Cut your chicken into pieces. After removing the chicken backs, traditionally the chicken breast are cut into horizontal pieces right through the bone (you will need a heavy cleaver for this task). Serve family-style, with each person having their own plate of rice garnished with roughly cut cucumber and carrot, small bowl of soup, as well as personal dipping sauces.

My low buy took a little hit this month, but to be fair... everything was on sale! I did need new bath/body products, so it was a great time to try a new indie brand too. The eyeshadow palettes I have no real excuse for.

Juvia's Place Masquerade Palette - Picked up during their Hautelook feature. I really like these. I haven’t used all the shades yet, but overall they’re very pigmented and easy to work with. I was looking for some brighter shadows to add to my collection, so this is a nice addition to my collection. I do get some staining with Jezebel, but nothing an oil cleanse can’t take away.
Juvia's Place Nubian 2 Palette - Picked up during their Hautelook feature. I really like these. I haven’t used all the shades yet, but overall they’re very pigmented and easy to work with. I do get a little fallout with the shimmers. There’s a nice selection of rusty colors with pops of color I enjoy. I do get some staining with Bori, but nothing an oil cleanse can’t take away.
Shiseido Pureness Refreshing Cleansing Water - Picked this up during the Macy’s sale. This is my HG micellar water. I use it as AM skin care during the summer and it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find, so I’m glad to have this in storage.
Alchemic Muse Zombee Body Scrub x3 - I wanted to try a little bit of everything Alchemic Muse has to offer, so I picked a selection of their bath and body to try out. Hello new favorite scrub. I love the texture, it’s similar to wet sand without the small grit. Scrubier than my former favorite scrub/exfoliant, HoG's Sugar Exfoliant, without being harsh. In fact I find it to be more moisturizing. I love the balance in the fragrance blend too. It’s clings to my skin very closely and lightly to my skin, I can even press my nose to an arm and smell a bit in the morning. It’s another scent that is like catnip to me, so I went back and picked up the last two in stock and put those in storage.
Notes: The sweet, earthy aroma of this creation is sure to resurrect your deepest passions! A thrilling concoction of sickly-sweet honey and warm beeswax over a layer of aged patchouli, crushed clove, and darkened vanilla pods.
Alchemic Muse Krumkake Cream Soap - In storage until I finish my first Zombee scrub. I’m hoping this is truer sweet and spicy gingerbread than I found HoG’s Nefarious Gingerbread Man to be.
Notes: Freshly baked gingerbread, brown sugar, creamy butter, and dark molasses dusted with saffron, clove, nutmeg and cinnamon and filled with caramelized chestnuts in thick vanilla cream.
Alchemic Muse Waikiki - Sweet coconut, bright salty lime. I'd love this as a drink. This last about 3.5 hours on my skin and doesn’t morph.
Notes: Surf's Up! Sparkling island lime and freshly cracked coconut drenched in summer sunshine and splashed with salty ocean spray.
Alchemic Muse Wassail Body Whip - Not pictured. I don’t know what i was thinking. This is very true to description (I lost the apple) but I wasn’t imagining a Christmas-y scent at all, haha. The whip itself is light and absorbs well, but I do feel there’s a richer oil in there that absorbs a little later than the rest, so there’s a little more wait time for it to fully absorb into the skin.
Notes: Juicy apples and orange zest simmering with warm spices of fresh ginger, cinnamon stick, and nutmeg spiked with vintage ale and dark patchouli.
