Todoroki x reader

summary: you have always loved cosplay and Todoroki was your favorite hero turns out he’s a big fan of your work too...

Cosplay had always been a hobby of yours. It had started when you were a little girl and had grown as time went on. So now, during the day you made Costumes for heroes, and during your free time, you made costumes for yourself. Your best cosplay and your favorite costume was your “Female Todoroki cosplay”. You had spent countless hours studying every detail of his costume getting it perfect, and as it seemed you're hard worked paid off. You were one of the top Todoroki cosplayers in all of Japan, as well as one of the top Costume designers for heroes.

“Do I really have to do this?” Todoroki asked as the makeup techs fluttered around him. Todoroki had never enjoyed the  'So and So goes threw their tag' video but here he was making them.

“It'll be fine, everything is filtered, just be yourself kid and everything will be fine,” his manager assured him  Shoto hated this stuff, he could be out in the streets saving people, but instead, he was inside some dumb corporate office pretending to be relate-able and down to earth. Shoto knew how abrasive his personality could be, he was surprised he had fans, he wasn't cute like Midoriya or charming like Kirishima, but people liked Bakugou so anything is possible,

Who would even want to watch something like this? Him reacting to his fan art? If he was honest he tried to avoid his fan base, after he discovered Slash fiction that is. He had no idea what to expect. He tried his best to say something interesting about each post but he still ended up giving boring reactions, his fans must be staved for content if they would watch a video like this. Then he saw her. A cosplayer dressed as, well him. She was stunningly attractive, and something oddly familiar about her.

“I've seen her before, She's- Talented,” he said trying to quell his oncoming blush. “the craftsmanship on her costume is astounding, she must have spent a long time on that outfit.” he clicked the picture and zoomed in on your chest piece, merely to get a closer look at your buttons. But the closer look at your breasts didn't hurt things. He continued scrolling but his mind was still stuck on you. even when he saw other cosplayers he compared them to you. When he finished filming, he found your Instagram and followed you.

You turned your phone off when you were at work. It was just too distracting and you really needed to focus on this dress. It was a special order for your loyal customer Froppy. She had some type of special Awards ceremony and she wanted a dress that was fashionable but also practical for crime fighting and you were up for the challenge. You only had a few more details to add to the dress before it was complete which was good, Sue was coming in for the final fitting tomorrow. The door to your office was flung open violently.  

“OH MY GOD (Y/N) WHAT DID YOU DO?!” Shelly, a coworker of yours, demanded walking up to you.

“What?” you asked taking your goggles off and turning to face her. She shoved her phone in your face. You were number three on twitters trending. Right under Todoroki Shoto and an earthquake in California.

“Why am I trending?” you asked confused. You turned on your phone and was flooded with notifications. You picked your way through the notifications until you reached the end of the stream. It was a video of Todoroki and one of your Cosplays was in the thumbnail. You and Shelly crowed your phone screen and watched the video in its entirety he said you were talented. He knew who you were. HE ZOOMED IN ON YOUR CHEST AND BLUSHED. You couldn't focus on the rest of the video. The phone slipped from your numb fingers. Shelly started scrolling through the trending tab.

“oh god people are totally shipping the to of you, Look someone already drew fanart of the two of you,” she showed you a cute drawing of you looking up and smiling him he was blushing and looking down at you. It was a cute style. You would retweet it later.

“I can't believe it,” you said as Shelly continued to scroll. “well I can deal with that later. I have to finish Sue's dress right now,” you said spinning around in your chair.

“Nuh-uh a super hot hero just followed you on Instagram and stared at your chest on the internet you can't just blow that off!”

“I'm not blowing it off I'm dealing with it later, besides it's not like he actually likes me it's just a bunch of fangirls losing their minds,” you said waving her away. She rolled her eyes and left.

“you know I don't need you to go with me,” Sue said hopping alongside Todoroki.

“I know, you are more than capable of protecting yourself but I just figured I would tag along anyway,” he said unconvincingly.

“you are avoiding your manager aren't you?”

“Yeah,”

“He's losing his mind over the whole cosplayer thing right?”

“Yeah,” 

Sue laughed, not unkindly. The whole situation was a mess, according to his manager at least.

“here we are, “ Sue said going into a sleek looking building. She led him down the halls of the building. It was odd, he got his costumes here all the time but he had never been to the actual building.

“(y/n)'s office is here, you can come in.” Sue said opening the door. You jumped on her the moment she walked through the door. You didn't even seem to notice Todoroki. Which suited him fine, he looked around your office taking in every detail. It was cluttered but organized. Then he turned his attention to you, he froze in his tracks. You were poised making Sue spin and throw punches as you watched the fabric move he watched you. It was you, the cosplayer, that he had seen before. He had to stop himself from setting off the fire alarm. He should have known.

“Okay Sue now I'm going to hit you and It shouldn't hurt, but tense up for me okay?” you said and Todoroki watched as you hit Sue hart in the stomach, it seemed like the dress absorbed the punch. He couldn't help but laugh. You whipped around and stared bug eye at him.

“Oh- Mr. Todoroki I didn't see you there,” you said apologetically.

“It's alright, I should have announced myself,” he said calmly then with out thinking, he added “I am a big fan of your work,” you opened your mouth but no words came out.

“u-uh thank you that means a lot,” you managed to stutter out.

“will you two wait to flirt until I'm not here,” Sue croaked.

“Right- you can take the dress off I'll have it delivered the day before the Ceremony if that's alright.”

 Sue nodded. And left as quickly as she came, but Todoroki Hesitated for a moment.

“I would love to collaborate with you some time, a photo shoot or something,” he offered. Your mouth went dry.

“I would love to,” you said nodding. He wrote something down on a paper and placed it on his desk.

“Text me, and we'll work out the details,” he waved goodbye and left. You stood there in shock, did he just give you his number?

Todoroki knew his manager would kill him, he was giving the fangirls to much fuel but he didn't care, he couldn't wait to see his fans reactions when he asked you out.

rhys gets hacked by maliwan not only bc they want a merger, but also because he has info on the vaults/giant space laser, forces zer0 to be maliwan branded now since atlas is joining maliwan, zer0 finds out rhys is not willingly joining maliwan and is instead under maliwan control and tries to forcibly take the key away from him, we stop zer0 and save rhys from both the assassin and maliwan control

Alright but in all seriousness there’s only 2 ways this can go

1. that’s actually our zer0

2. that’s actually not our zer0

and there’s a lot of theories running around about that and i guess we ought to address them

so for 1 there’s a few possibilities:

1. zer0 is a robo/cyborg and got hacked by maliwan (i personally don’t like this one bc i don’t want to know what zer0 actually is. it is a ~m y s t e r y~)

2. zer0 got paid more money to eliminate rhys and is doing so

3. zer0 decided killing their boss would be the ultimate challenge and thus decided to try it out... by joining maliwan

4. they’re faking rhys’s death and/or zer0 is infiltrating maliwan

5. zer0 got the brainwashed/their bodysuit got hacked (i would be interested to see if the monomolecular edge tech caused them to get captured or smth. i mean if there’s a tracker on it, then zer0′s decepti0n wouldn’t exactly work cuz they turn invisible... but they’d still be seen)

6. rhys got the brainwashed/hacked and zer0 is attacking him to get the eridian thingie/key/relic/whatever back

personally i’m curious how they’d play off 1-3 given Zer0 and Rhys are both shown on sanc-iii and zer0 even has crew challenges

im saying idk if the crimson raiders would appreciate zer0 attacking/trying to kill an ally without very good reason.

which is why i’d imagine 4-6 are the more reasonable answers?

also given the explosion of Promethea (what we’re assuming is Promethea) is green and also the laser we see maliwan controlling is purple, i wonder if that’s some brainwashing juice instead of... other stuff. cuz like.

this is elpis’s giant space laser. very radiant and like... ribbon-y? and has all that blue stuff and orbs and mm.

THIS is Promethea’s very solid and has circles and just. looks straight up like a death laser.

and yeah again it could be modified by that human-looking (?) tech around it to be like a brainwashing b e a m or something

typhon and leda 100% noticed something here. i guess if it was altered by humans after typhon and leda found it then that would make sense?

i love these ones

1. that’s 0ne (zer0′s assassin’s assassin from the son of crawmerax dlc)

2. maliwan made a/hired a copy of zer0 and it’s easy to copy their voice/way of speech bc of the modulator (that’s just a fake implanted into atlas to steal all their secrets)

and all of these have the idea that the real zer0 shows up to save rhys at the end of this scene (explaining the blue light)

i personally disagree on that being zer0′s sword. tbh it looks more like a maliwan weapon or a laser or smth to me. that said it could be a weird effect because they’re in decepti0n or smth.

most of these theories have the idea that the real zer0 is either off with Fiona or Lorelei or just off on their own and only show up later. i wouldn’t even be surprised, given their line at the end of Tales. you know the one where they diss rhys like “i was talking to her” lol

so i don’t really have much to add to these. personally i believe that’s our zer0 up there, but i wouldn’t be shocked if something happened with the monomolecular edge that allowed maliwan to create a copy of zer0. or brainwash/control them. whichever. 

i do like the reintegration of 0ne into the story, that’d be a hilarious call-back, but i worry it’d be too obscure (a side quest in a headhunter dlc) for the majority of players. we’ll see

it’s weird if brainwashing or mind controlling thru the maliwan tech is the case bc the monomolecular edge isn’t present on their maliwan sword. or their future sanc-iii sword (but that part DOES make sense bc why would they keep that).

i love her to bits but i don’t trust her because i mean... she worked alongside Nisha and Wilhelm and Alistair dislikes her. there’s like a 50-50 shot she’ll become evil

i would not be surprised if this is a boss fight (door looks frozen over on the left there) but also i would not be surprised if she’s helping us fight off waves of enemies given it looks like we’re in the jakobs manor

her attack does make the camera wiggle a bit, usually that happens if the attack injures the player viewing it (with the hud off) cuz it will give a stagger effect

so take that with a grain of salt. also we don’t see aurelia on sanc-iii when hammerlock and wainwright are both there in the group shot in the launch trailer

you can see a huge Tink with Eridium growing out of his head and what look to be Eridium horns. And he's being elementally charged from an Eridian floor tile (in one of those temples, probably the Pandoran one but it could be Athenas, I guess). Kind of like how Bloodwing (also bigger) becomes elementally charged by Jack using element-throwers to change her element. i know it's a cultist tink because on his right shoulder (our left) he has those glow-y pink/purple tubes that are on the CoV guns and other cultists (like goliaths). and while i'm not sure if this is solely Eridian stuff (since they're in a temple) or because of the twins, it's definitely something that should be talked about.

Many believe so and are expressing their frustrations throughout the web, on Black Twitter and beyond.  The projects at the forefront of these conversations are The Hate U Give, a film adaptation of The New York Times best-seller by first-time author Angie Thomas, and Raising Dion, a Netflix television series adaptation of the original comic book and its trailer by Dennis Liu, spearheaded by Michael B. Jordan’s production company, Outlier Society Productions.The controversy around The Hate U Give arose last year when it was announced that Amandla Stenberg, a well-known, fair-skinned actress of mixed race, was cast as ‘Starr,’ the book’s main character. The uproar was reignited when the first trailer was released. Fans are upset that the image on the front of The Hate U Give is of a dark-skinned girl. However, the author confirmed Stenberg was cast before the book had a cover. Even still, according to the book, Starr is described as having a caramel, "medium-brown complexion." 

I'm excited for this movie, and I personally love Amandla, but I think this was a HUGE missed oppurtiunity to cast a dark-skinned girl to play Starr. We deserve to see ourselves on screen too and i'm tired of only seeing light-skinned black girls in movies. https://t.co/xJws7QcexW

Conversely, in the trailer and comic book for Raising Dion, the mom and son are also of darker complexions although the actor and actress cast to play the roles are noticeably lighter.

People have many reasons to be upset. A lot of these issues go back to the times of slavery when lighter-skinned enslaved individuals were seen as more ‘delicate’ and were assigned to household duties, while those of darker complexions were forced to work in the fields. These divisive ‘brown paper bag’ ideologies have had an adverse impact on the black community and society as a whole for generations in the United States and cultures around the world. The recasting of lighter characters furthers the racist notion that ‘white is right’ and lighter is inherently better. Pulitzer Prize winner Alice Walker, who is believed to have first coined colorism, defined it as the “prejudicial or preferential treatment of same-race people based solely on their color.”

Colorism does need to be stopped in Hollywood and beyond, but should we not support black creators' work altogether? While I do agree that people should be vocal about the lack of opportunities given to those of darker hues, I do not believe that taking support away from these projects will assist in the overall effort to have these colorism issues resolved in the future.As she said in her Twitter bio, Angie Thomas is not the casting director for the film adaptation of her book, nor was Michael B. Jordan directly in charge of casting for his new project and should not get the brunt of the criticism.

Further, we cannot forget that Michael B. Jordan is one of the first people to have an ‘inclusion rider,’ a clause in a contract to make sure that 50 percent of the cast and crew in a project are diverse. In his most recent cover story with Essence Magazine, Jordan stated, “I want to lead by example. I know I had an opportunity with the shows and projects I had coming up, to put it to work. It’s important to have diversity both in front of and behind the camera, and inclusion riders make sure that anyone who does business with my company knows that we expect there to be people of color, women, LGBT folks and people with disabilities in key positions on our crews and productions staffs.” 

Understandably, the process of diversifying the industry will not be without its challenges; nonetheless, the effort Jordan is implementing demonstrates his commitment to amplifying the voice of the disenfranchised in the entertainment industry. Additionally, supporters believe Stenberg's casting in The Hate U Give was a perfect choice because of the similarities she shares with the split and complicated main character. Starr faced prejudice from people in her school and the community, and Amandla has also faced prejudice in real life, being called the N-word and "black b***h" when she was cast in the mainly white Hunger Games film. The A-list actress also spoke out unapologetically about cultural appropriation and gender bias.

*cracks knuckles* so I guess I’ll just discuss this in the order that I made these!

First off, I just wanted to say I based the Lupin!Pats off of their counterparts but I also wanted their own personalities to be reflected in their thief costumes; likewise, even though the Pat!Lupins wear uniforms, I tried to capture their personalities as best I could

So starting with Tsukasa, I decided to give her something that was elegant, yet cute to reflect the side of her that likes cute things and also i just wanted an excuse to draw tsukasa in lolita. Her dress is based off Rabbit Teeth ~Ode to Napoleon~ while keeping aspects of Umika’s costume (like the tiny hat and pins)

I thought Kairi’s costume was a little too fancy for Keiichiro?? Personally I thought something more simple would be more fitting for him, so I gave him a three piece suit and a flat brim fedora. I think he kinda looks like a mobster lol

Also I just need everyone to know this, but I googled “fancy watches” for a reference for Keiichiro’s watch and like??? watches are so expensive??? This is the one I chose as reference and it’s like $15k?????????? why do you need to spend so much to read time????? anyways thank u i just need to share how much fashion and its prices baffle me

Moving onto Sakuya, I thought that out of the three, he’d be the most into the whole phantom thieves gimmick and thus would be really fancy haha so I gave him a tuxedo and a top hat. he would totally put on a cape and try to be like tuxedo mask if not for keiichiro and tsukasa

(Also yea, I just used textures for Keiichiro and Sakuya’s costumes lol...... ain’t got the patience to create my own design or mimic Kairi’s and Touma’s www)

just an idea I have about where the Lupin!Pats got their costumes: I headcanon that Umika designed and made the Lupins’ costumes, so I also imagine that she also made the ones for the Lupin!Pats -- not that she meant it for them specifically lol while she was still a student, someone (Kogure in ~disguise~, assuming that this is all indeed an elaborate plot) commissioned her to make these costumes though they never really explained why. Still, they offered a lot of money, so she did it www. Needless to say, she was shocked when she saw the costumes in action haha

Anyhow, the Pat!Lupins! They just have the standard GSPO uniforms, but like I said, I tried to show their personalities. Touma wears the GSPO watch and though he keeps his jacket zipped all the way, his pants aren’t tucked into his boots.

I figure Kairi would be kinda “lazy” with his uniform, not zipping it nor keeping his pants tucked into his boots. Not shown, but he’s wearing the GSPO bracelet (which P-Bandai took down for some reason :c).

I really adore Umika being a fashion designer and having her own sense of style and I really didn’t wanna lose that part of her... it was a bit of a challenge since it’s like how can you show that while still adhering to the uniform? Her hair would cover her earrings www but I also gave her the GSPO bracelet, and I gave her a lil necklace based on the Pats’ badge haha

QUICK JAMS | THE DRUMS

“Life is a challenge, but it makes great art.”

Jonny Pierce is one of the greatest indie artists of our time as he’s spent the last 8 years cultivating The Drums into the magical musical unicorn it is today. With hits such as “Let’s Go Surfing” and “Money” under his belt, this one-of-a-kind artist is ready to release his latest album, “Absymal Thoughts,” absolutely solo— and he couldn’t be happier. It’s been a wild ride following the progression of The Drums over the years, so we were eager to chat with Jonny about his thoughts on changing the course of the band, as well as the events that really steered and molded his new album. Tell us a little bit about The Drums. How did it all begin, and what got you into music in the first place?

Oh god, I mean it’s been 8 years since I started the band. We’ve put out 3 albums and one mini-album. The band started as a four piece, and with each album we have seen at least one member depart— leaving only me as the sole member for the new album, Abysmal Thoughts. Eight years ago I was writing songs that were almost purely whimsical and escapist and now the songs will still make you dance, but have a very heavy subject matter based on my own personal reality.

  With your new album Absymal Thoughts dropping, how do you feel your sound has changed since releasing Summertime?

I don’t really think much has changed musically. I still write and record pretty much everything you hear. I think where the real change is happening is in the content. Lyrics are totally vulnerable and honest now. The artwork is exactly what I want, and the live show is not compromised any longer. With the departure of Jacob after Encyclopedia, I was given total freedom (by default) to do exactly what I wanted. Historically, I’ve always done the lion’s share of songwriting and recording, so songs still sound like The Drums, but I always felt like I had more people to represent than just me. I had to consider their various artistic visions, which meant sometimes compromised product. I don’t have to consider anyone anymore. I only consider myself. Don’t get me wrong, I feel grateful for contributions of past members but am nothing but thrilled to have The Drums be my baby again.

 Which is your favorite song from the album and why?

I really like “Are U Fucked?.” I introduced a few new elements to the world of The Drums in the form of percussion and brass which continue in other songs on the album, like “Your Tenderness” and the title track and album closer, “Abysmal Thoughts.” This track sort of embodies my new found freedom. Cussing in a song, using bongos and woodblocks, and a muted sax. I don’t think these things would have flown if Jacob was around and I had been sitting on these ideas for literally years. It might be a small change for most people, but for me, It’s a true rebirth.

  When you first began writing this album, was there a particular emotion or thought process you wanted your fans to experience?

When I recorded this album, all of the writing was coming from a very lonely and confused headspace. I had just gone through the most significant breakup of my life and I was living in an unfamiliar city and feeling like total garbage. I felt used and worthless, and I guess I wanted my fans to feel that with the new record. So I made a decision to be fully open about where I was in my life emotionally. It’s an exciting album to listen to because it was really like going to a therapist every time I went to record a new song. I just vomit out all my thoughts and the songs would just form around them very organically. In that sense it was an easy album to make. Good art demands to exist.

  What (or who) were some key influences in the album’s sound?

I really just try to shut everything out when I am recording a new album. I mean, I think the only music I listened to that whole time was top 40 Radio, and that was just because I heard it in every Uber I got into in LA. I really just listen to nothing or sometimes I’ll listen to my own work from the past. It’s too easy to care what other people are doing once you start to care. So, I’d rather never start caring in the first place. I’m an artist, not a phone app. I don’t need to be constantly updating.

 What is something most people don’t know about this album?

That I barely remember making it. At the time, I was punishing myself for letting an important relationship fall apart, so I was doing lots of bad drugs and getting into a lot of trouble. I was seeing a shrink, but I think I was hungover almost every time I went in to see her, so I didn’t really learn much. I missed a lot of sessions and I cried all the time... and suddenly the album was finished and I was like whoa that album really wanted to be made because I had to do the whole thing myself. 

 Did you encounter any challenges as things progressed when writing Absymal Thoughts? If so, what were they?  

My whole life is a challenge, but it makes for great art. I think I’ve always welcomed whatever came my way because it makes life more colorful and I live for art, so to not honor everything that happens would be to not be a good artist.

  Is there anyone making music these days that you’re particularly excited about?

Whenever I get asked this question, I automatically start making a list of all the bands and artists that I loathe, but that isn’t the question that you asked! I’m enjoying Snail Mail’s new EP. She has a voice that you shouldn’t and wouldn’t ignore, and then there’s this African-percussive-dance stuff by a group called Xanga. My favorite track from them right now is called “This Is How It Starts” or “This is How It Begins.” It’s really incredible. My favorite track right now.

  What’s your free time like when you’re not writing or touring the globe?

 I spend time pretty much staying in my apartment in the LES, New York trying to pretend I’m a real person— or else I’m up at my lake cabin gardening, trying to pretend I’m a real person. Both activities almost always include my boyfriend, Keon. He calms me and makes me want to do everything to the best of my ability. He’s helped change me into a better person, I think. I have this other friend, Bob. Bob is in his 70’s and he’s my mother and father, sister and brother, grandparent and mentor, and son and daughter. He is quite literally everything to me. He is part of my chosen family.

  Got any good tour stories?

Uh yeah—  for the first time in my life, no one is on tour with me who doesn’t want to be there! How’s that for refreshing?!

  With Absymal Thoughts releasing, what do you want to get out of this album? Who do you want to tour with, and where?

I just want people to be touched by the vulnerable nature of the album. I get emails and messages every day from people who cling to my music because they find comfort in it. Lots of them tell me they are extremely lonely. Some of them are suicidal. Some of them are considering coming out. This is what matters to me most. Who I tour with and all that is very secondary. I want to keep making more music, and beyond that who cares really.

 So what’s next for The Drums?

A giant (and I mean giant) world tour.

First of all I did a bit of brainstorming (in the right) and then I chose the face/concept that fitted better and did an overall full body character (in the left) I wanted to represent not only what the social media offers to users but also the actual people that use that social media (I base the gender on which gender used more that social media etc) ~Tumblr: i wanted to make a girl character and I wasn't sure about the "style" should she have more of an edgy and punk style or a preppy and hipster style? Although we’ve been told that goals are a key to success, what if goal-setting actually reduces performance?

Many years back I worked with a Formula One racing team. At that time, pit crews consisted of 19 guys who serviced the ultrafast, high-tech race– refueling cars, changing tires, and performing required maintenance in a matter of seconds. The pit crew members continually shifted positions to find the optimal configuration of the team. As they practiced, they used a stopwatch to measure their time to the millisecond. There was a point where they hit a performance plateau. No matter how hard they tried, they couldn’t go any faster.

Then, they tried a counter intuitive approach. Pit crew members were told that instead of focusing on speed they should focus on style. They were to go fast, but they were to think “smooth” as they performed their activities. Movement was more significant than speed. Astonishingly, the pit crew shaved several tenths of a second off their best time, even though they “felt” they were moving more slowly.

The more you focus on a goal, the less likely you are to achieve it. By worrying about the future, you take your eye off the present. And this reduces performance.

Selling Without Selling

This concept applies in all areas of life and business.

For example, sometimes the best way to sell is to not focus on your sales goals. A woman’s clothing store had a competition to determine who among its employees could sell the most in two months. The winner would receive a bonus and small raise. All had their eyes on the prize, except for one sales rep who decided on a different approach. Instead of trying to make a sale, she zeroed in on serving the customer. If a customer needed help for eight hours to pick out a blouse, that’s what she would do. If she felt customers would find a better product at a competitor, she would send them there. After two months, this sales person who was not trying to make sales outsold everyone else by a significant margin.

We have seen similar results in many sales and service organizations. We all know (and believe) the expression, “You get what you measure.” But a serious question arises: will you get what you want? Often, targets and goals create stress and dysfunctional behavior.

Less Motivation, More Performance

The concept of reducing goal-obsession to improve performance is not new. In the early 1900s, Robert Yerkes and J.D. Dodson developed the eponymous Yerkes-Dodson Law. The premise is, performance increases relative to motivation only to a point, after which performance drops. Typically, it is drawn as an inverted U-shaped curve where the x-axis is motivation (their word was arousal) and the y-axis is performance.

Low motivation results in low performance. This is not surprising. As your motivation increases, your performance increases–to a point. This point is the sweet spot of optimal performance. Then, as you become more goal-obsessed, performance paradoxically decreases. Goals increase stress and cause you to fixate on the future rather than the present.

Yerkes and Dodson suggest that different tasks require different levels of motivation. For example, physically demanding tasks often require higher levels of motivation. This explains why professional athletes are inclined to be very goal-driven. Even so, as athletes approach major milestones (e.g., 400th home run), their performance drops.

Creativity Has its Own Rewards

Within the business world, Yerkes and Dodson found that intellectually challenging tasks required low levels of motivation. The more creative the work, the less motivation required to hit peak levels of performance.

Interestingly, creativity diminishes when individuals are rewarded (externally motivated) for doing their work. Why? The desire to achieve the goal overtakes the personal interest in the endeavor. A myopic focus on the outcome overshadows the intellectual stimulation of the process. As a result, risk taking becomes reduced and creativity vanishes.

“Working hard” may not be the best way to improve productivity and creativity. Maybe it isn’t even about “working smarter.” As we have seen, perhaps the answer lies in trying less.

My ABCovid-19 Journal – Day 5 of 5, Letters “U” through “Z”

We’ve had a lovely week on Seneca Lake, re-setting our physical, mental, and emotional clocks in the #KahnCave. It’s been blissful.

I’ve enjoyed receiving feedback on the past four days of ABCovid-19 journal shares on my LinkedIn page and Twitter feed @HealthyThinker. My #arttherapy is yours for the sharing and taking. We are all, truly, on this pandemic journey together. That’s public health, for you.

Today, I bring you the fifth and last day of sharing my COVID-19 alphabet with you: the letters “U” through “Z.” Read on, and please let me know after seeing all 26 alpha’s which page(s) you liked best. I’ve already started version 2 of this, to share new learnings and feelings I have as the U.S. didn’t really crush the curve we so hoped would happen back in April when I completed the pages you’ve seen.

Onward, health citizens.

U is for unemployment

The Great Lockdown of our lives via quarantining and sheltering-in-place also led to a lockdown of livelihoods for many people. I devoted the “U” page to unemployment. While there were other u-words I could have chosen, I wear the professional lens of an economist so this “U” was part of the early forecasting I was doing as COVID-19 took hold of our lives and our jobs.

I found an old scrapbook paper page featuring classified ads (remember those? Those of you who think Craig’s List is Old School won’t, so here’s a useful description of “the classifieds” from Advertising Age).

The photo at the upper left illustrates the dramatic growth up and up of job losses in the U.S. The nation went from 4.4% unemployment in February 2020 to 14.7% in March. As I write this post today, 13th August, nearly 1 mm more people signed up for unemployment benefits; the country recorded an UE rate of 10.2% in July 2020 as some people have returned to their workplaces since layoffs and furloughs began in February and sustained through March and April.

This page reminds the reader that a pandemic impacts not only physical health, but a nation’s people’s economic health and financial wellness. Health is, indeed, wealth.

V is for virus

“V” could have been for vaccine, too, which it will be in my Phase 2 version of the ABCovid-19 Journal v2.

On the “V” page, I lined the base with handmade paper from Florence, Italy, that has organic “bleeding” vertical lines that looked great with the flowing “V” card I found in a deck of alphabet cards.

I cut the chest x-ray image out of an old medical journal I had in my paper stash: we knew early on the respiratory disease aspects of the coronavirus, so this x-ray seemed well-placed here on the virus page.

On the left side, I used a photo from many that have been curated from microscopic images of the virus; this one, in colors that matched the Florentine paper.

I spelled out “virus” using letters from a three-dimensional foam alphabet set called “Thickers” to achieve a lumpy texture on the page.

W is for Wuhan

My last plane trip on business in 2020 was on February 27, when I was engaged to speak with the medical leaders of Sharp Healthcare System in San Diego, California. I always welcome the opportunity to head to San Diego because when it works out, I love to visit with the Scripps Research’s Dr. Eric Topol for a few minutes to brainstorm health, life, liberty, and our pursuits of happiness. I did so on the 27th after landing at SAN Airport, then drove on to the San Diego Marriott, the site of my meeting with the Sharp team.

We convened on Friday morning, the 28th, in a large ballroom — several hundred clinicians, managers, and me. Before I kicked off my early am keynote talk, a senior leader of the organization introduced the meeting with an update for the team on the status of personal protective equipment for the enterprise.

The short story was that, like the bulk of hospitals in the U.S., the source of #PPE (masks, gloves, and other disposable goods used every day by every clinician) was China — and specifically, factories located in Wuhan.

Wuhan was a hotspot for the coronavirus in China. The lockdown of the area led to a huge shock to the PPE supply chain. This article from 4th February WIRED spoke to the impending mask shortage due to the coronavirus in China.

That scenario was my up-close-and-personal intro to COVID-19 through the eyes of a client — a major health provider. I took extra time to consider and curate this “W” page, using Wuhan as the theme. I had this incredibly intricate scrapbook paper of a region of China, with snaking graphics and towns, some circled in red. The undulating design is organic and consistent with the viral context. I found a few travel stickers which were faux passport stamps from Chinese cities, and a red “traveller’s star” piece of ephemera at the bottom left.

I finished the page with a printed photo of a miniature map showing the location of Wuhan in its region.

X is for Disease “X”

In their research into pandemics, the World Health Organization (WHO) has a list of the worst of them; these include

COVID-19

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever

Ebola virus disease and Marburg virus disease

Lassa fever

Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)

Nipah and henipaviral diseases

Rift Valley fever

Zika, and…

“Disease X.”

This ABCovid-19 journal page calls out Disease X as a warning: there will be yet another pandemic, as yet to be named.

But she’s out there. Be aware. Be prepared.

The base of this page is a map of The World because we are all in the pandemic world together…from Wuhan to Milan to Manhattan to Kirkland, Washington, and on to Austin and Boston and Atlanta and Houston and St. Louis, MO. In the U.S., the spread of COVID-19 would not be limited to the west and east coasts.

I found that surreal graphic at the right in a magazine article talking about Disease X which felt picture-perfect, albeit mega-disturbing… as appropriate.

Y is for yeast

One of the new life-flows awakened in consumers in the pandemic was home-cooking and, in particular, bread-making.

And specifically, sourdough became a normal, reassuring home-making activity. Posting homemade breads on Instagram became a thing for millions of people around the world.

But bread-making requires a basic ingredient called yeast, and in the Age of Corona, yeast was hard to find. USA Today wrote about the shortage, as did People magazine; this was a mainstream challenge which became symbolic as a DIY life-flow signaling control over “something.”

This ABC page is dedicated to that scarce commodity for our pandemic pantries. I lined the page with wonderful vintage kitchen/cooking scrapbook paper, on top layered with images of women cooking and serving with pride.

I love the old toaster on the left labeled “Bon Appetit.”

I took a picture of a plastic bag of flour I bought at Whole Foods which, in the early pandemic, had a shortage of baking supplies. The store had large industrial-sized sacks of flour in their storage area and the staff began to create 5 pound bags of it to satisfy shoppers’ growing baking jones.

Finally…

Z is for Zoom.

Of course, “Z” is for Zoom.

Zoom brought families together during the Judeo-Christian Holy Week in March 2020, for virtual Passover Seders among Jews sharing the annual ritual and Christians on Easter weekend communing in faith and Sunday meals on laptop monitors. Mashable wrote up a primer for how Jews could host a Passover Seder over Zoom. NBC did a “THINK” piece on how G-d could show up digitally in the pandemic, even via Zoom.

For this page, I started with one of my favorite paper lines I’ve hoarded over the years — it’s called “9 to 5” from October Afternoon, and feels a bit like “Mad Men” meets Michael’s or Joann Crafts. I used this paper series for a mini-book I made about my mom’s career, so I really do love the series.

I added in a vintage look journaling card, reminiscent of “Dick and Jane” book art, that reads, “Work at Home,” illustrating a “housewife” doing chores around the home…ironic twist to a page dedicated to a word for a platform that has enabled millions of workers the world over to collaborate online and tele-work from home in the lockdown era.

With Zoom, we complete all 26 letters of the ABCovid-19 alphabet.

It’s been my pleasure to open my #arttherapy kimono to share these pages with you. Each of us needs to hack our way through the mental and emotional side effects of the pandemic. For me, my creative outlets always give me a way to channel frustration, loneliness, and other negative feelings that detract from my resilience and positive energy. The feelings are really and must be acknowledged, but I try to constructively engage with them and arm-wrestle through creativity, processing them but killing them with creative kindness.

That’s more personal content than I usually share on Health Populi, but we live in very challenging times in the Age of Corona. Thank you for traveling this journey with me. We will persist, will will survive and thrive beyond the lockdowns. We’ll wear fashionable masks, find joy in small things, and get to hug each other at some point. Until those in-person hugs come, I wish you well, love, health, and your own constructive creative outlets.

Taking the $57-a-Day Challenge in Prague

In 1991, the last time I set foot in Prague, it was the Czechoslovakian capital, and things were so cheap to a Western college student bearing hard currency that if you ordered an ice cream cone and didn’t like the flavor, you were tempted to throw it away and get another one. Beer by the half-liter cost pennies. The most prominent crowds downtown were not of tourists but political gatherings in Wenceslas Square during the early days of democracy.

Things have changed.

Stare Mesto, the Old Town, is not a frugal paradise. Swarovski crystal shops and restaurants selling overpriced Czech cuisine abound. Tourist crowds line up to pay 120 koruny, about $5.20, for scoops of ice cream plopped into the unholy offspring of a doughnut and a sugar cone known as a trdlnek. (Forget throwing it away, I wasn’t buying it in the first place.)

But the city is still a relative bargain. On a frugal-minded visit to what is now the capital of the Czech Republic, I decided to set my budget at the typical daily wage of a Prague resident, or at least what several online sources told me it was: 1,300 koruny, or about $57 a day.

Walking around Stare Mesto is free, as long as you bring a guidebook and are willing to eavesdrop in brief spurts on other people’s tour guides, as I did to hear about what the skeleton on the famed astronomical clock on the Old Town Hall stands for. (“I’ll give you a hint, it’s not gluttony.”) But most of the time, you’ll want to be out of there. Luckily, moving around Prague couldn’t be easier. A three-day transit pass on the official Litacka app cost me 310 koruny for Prague’s fantastic tram and subway system. With the pass on my phone and thus no need to validate tickets or go through turnstiles, it felt like a punctual, hygienic and omnipresent friend was constantly giving me a ride.

For lodging, my cousin Michael, a journalist based in Prague, suggested the Zizkov neighborhood, a once downtrodden and still not entirely uptrodden neighborhood across the train tracks east of downtown. That’s where I found Hostel Sklep, where I paid 538 koruny a night for a private room furnished in a style I’d call Pre-Ikea Austere. But it was comfortable enough, the shared bathroom clean enough, and the free breakfast met all five of my criteria for a great frugal meal: It was cheap, generously portioned, nongreasy, traditional and tasty, -thanks to fresh bread and a zesty egg spread called vajickova pomazanka that I loved.

But free and cheap will only get you so far in Prague. The city’s rich cultural attractions do not always cater to scrimpers. I found that out Day 1 at the Museum Kampa, a private modern art institution housed in a revamped mill complex on the Vltava River that weaves through the city. What began as a collection of works by exiled or persecuted Czech artists under Communism, now occupies galleries that meander off a staircase that leads up to a lookout above.

I cheaped out on the 270-koruny all-access ticket, and instead paid 100 koruny to see just the permanent collection. That was a mistake: it was totally unclear what was permanent and what was not, and no one spoke enough English to tell me. I wandered into galleries and was frequently ejected; by the time I found someone who I could communicate with (in French), she told me there were only two galleries included in my ticket and I’d already been to both. Apparently, word had spread among staff that a certain bumbling tourist had been too cheap to shell out for the whole museum.

From then on I set my cultural budget at 300 koruny a day, and did much better. Sure, you can enter the Prague Castle complex and wander around for free, even stepping a few feet inside the 14th century Cathedral of Saint Vitus. But my 250-koruny ticket got me inside the castle itself, as well as Golden Lane — tiny cottages nested within the castle’s exterior walls that were originally inhabited by archers and for a short time in the 20th century, by Franz Kafka. Some places were still too expensive, so where I could, I substituted cheap activities for expensive ones, giving up the 15th century Jewish cemetery, (350 koruny, as part of entry to the Jewish Museum in Prague) for the New Jewish Cemetery (where a 20 koruny guide and map makes a walk through the vine-covered graveyard much more interesting). Opened in 1890 and with a striking gap in burials for several decades during and after World War II, the cemetery is best known as Kafka’s burial site. I approached his grave with low expectations, but ended up chatting there with a middle-aged Slovak who recalled for me how in his school days Kafka was underground literature. (The author’s work was banned until 1989.)

A 20-koruny visit to the Blesi Trhy Praha, which translates as Prague Flea Market, and a free stroll through Sapa, Prague’s Vietnamese market, which resembles a cross between a warehouse and a strip mall, kept me largely under budget. I say “largely” because, well, the beer in Prague is really good.

On two of my four nights in town, I did break the cap by not stopping at one (or two) extra-crisp Czech pilsners, an overdraft that I feel most beer-worshipping Prague residents would understand and approve. My cousin Michael certainly did, as he took me out for “a” beer on a Monday night that turned into four or five starting at the Prague Beer Museum with its large (but not cheap) selection of Czech beers and wound to U Sudu, an underground labyrinth of high-arched brick ceilings and packed with beer-drinking students, a few of whom we dragged into 20-crown games of foosball. I commented on how the place was surprisingly full late on a weeknight. “You never know what’s going to happen in Prague,” Michael said. “Sometimes Monday nights are the best nights.”

Another night, one beer turned into three at Vinohradsky Pivovar, a highly regarded brew pub (disclaimer: Michael’s friends are part-owners). I loved the pilsener there so much that for the first time I can remember, I voluntarily drank it even though an IPA was available.

I should note that I also occasionally ate well on the cheap. I kept snack spending to a minimum by packing Tatranky bars, old-fashioned chocolate-covered wafers, that cost me five to 10 koruny at the supermarket. Pulling them out of my pocket turned out to be a neat party trick, evoking double-takes from Czechs surprised to see a foreigner eating a childhood favorite. It was more or less how I would react coming across a group of Chinese tourists in Times Square unwrapping Ding Dongs.

Aside from a couple of bargain Vietnamese meals at the market, I stuck with Czech cuisine throughout. A cafeteria-style restaurant, Havelska Koruna, was amazingly located right in Stare Mesto. There’s a slight markup for the location, and a 39-crown add-on if you can’t resist the fruit dumpling topped in creamy sauce, but it was still a great deal. Czechs were tickled I ate there as well. “That’s where we used to go when we were younger and had a hangover,” said Kristyna Pekarkova a Prague native who I met through Michael. She is 24.

The best bargain meal I had — easily satisfying all five frugal criteria — was the glistening quarter-duck stuffed with potato dumplings at U Bansethu. And the most unexpected was at Dejvicka Nadrazka, a place several Czech friends told me I “had to” go because it was one of the city’s last restaurants housed in a train station.

I invited the Prague-dwelling beer expert (and New York Times contributor) Evan Rail to join me there for lunch. When I arrived, he told me my Czech friends must have been playing a practical joke, for this was the diviest of dive bars, with a food menu limited to two kinds of sausages and a disc of marinated cheese. “My wife said, ‘What are you going to have for lunch, beer and zelene?” he said. (Zelene is a cheap peppermint liqueur.)

Actually, I think my friends had meant for me to go at night, when things are livelier and divier. But I kind of liked the daytime crowd, which included a man with a bushy white mustache reading the paper over a beer and a diminutive older woman wearing a red vest over a furry periwinkle sweater who struggled to hoist herself up onto a high bar chair. And the food actually turned to be pretty good: we ordered one of everything, 50 koruny for a hot sausage, 25 for a pickled one, and the cheese for 45.

Still, I felt I owed Evan a make-up, so we hopped a tram to the Holesovice neighborhood where I treated him to an espresso and dessert at Emil Gaigher cafe, a traditional spot serving goodies like medovy trojhranek, a triangular five-layer slice of cake held together with caramel and cream and topped with ground walnuts for a bargain 17 koruny, and a caramel coated cream puff called a vetrnik karamelovny for 24.

Taking the sausages and sweets together as a whole, the meal was greasy and sugary, but also traditional, cheap, delicious and filling. There’s no need to meet all five frugal requirements at every meal.

It’s hard to believe that it’s only been five years since Lady Gaga released her first album, The Fame. The sheer number of images, hits and sound bites the 27-year-old has ushered into popular culture is uncanny. The New York native’s wardrobe choices have inspired lookalike fans and popularized collections from such designers as Jean Paul Gaultier and Hussein Chalayan. Her first fragrance, Fame, launched in 2012, sold six million bottles during its first week. University courses have analyzed her socio-political significance. She’s the only chart-topper to have used the word “transgendered” in a Billboard number one hit (2011’s “Born This Way”), and her 40 million-plus Twitter followers and 60 million Facebook fans have witnessed her fight for equal rights for women and the LGBT community. Last year, Time Magazine’s readers named her the second most influential person of the decade (beating out U.S. President Barack Obama). Unlike so many in her line of work, Gaga’s affection for fashion is not a flirtation. Whether donning legendary labels, new technologies or message-based garments, the woman formerly known as Stefani Germanotta is a living, breathing canvas. Which is probably why Donatella Versace chose Gaga as the new face of her label. Before her upcoming world tour, Gaga sat down with features editor Elio Iannacci to talk about her latest obsessions and her current album, Artpop.

You once said you wanted to be regarded as the female Andy Warhol. Do you feel closer to that goal? When I said that, I didn’t have a concept of where my career was headed. When I was writing Artpop, I was really looking at where we are now as a culture. I was in H&M the other day, looking around just to see the effect that Monster culture has had on street fashion. People used to say, ‘Who is this weird girl with her crazy outfits?’

How did the subsequent surge of fame affect you? I never let anyone change who I was. I was always willing to go down with my own artistic ship. I create things that I really care about—I fight for images, for music and for the community of fans. Born This Way was all about equality and being yourself from the inside out, but now there’s a need to celebrate that. Artpop is a celebration.

You have a mandate to make a space where high and low art, fashion and music can live together. To many, this is still seen as a radical act. This is the dilemma. I don’t believe there’s pretension in art. You don’t have to know anything about art to love it. You just have to be next to it and feel it. I want my fans to know that we don’t have to succumb to what people think a pop star should be in order to be successful.

You were accepted into The Juilliard School as a child, but your parents placed you in a private Catholic school. Had you gone through that classical training, would there be a Lady Gaga? Probably. There’s this implication that if I wasn’t so successful I would have to stop. But I never would have stopped. I would be in some bar, being Lady Gaga.

You’ve recently taken workshops with Marina Abramović—the performance artist who has risked her life for her art. How have they changed your perceptions? I thought that after The Fame, The Fame Monster and Born This Way, it had all worn me down. It felt like my mind and every muscle in my body had been taken by the noise and the cameras—but it hadn’t. I went into the woods with Marina [for an artistic workshop] and I realized how strong I really was. [Marina] will balance on a stick between her legs for nine hours and go numb in the name of art. For her, it’s all about creating this experience with the audience where they’re watching her suffer for her work. Once I was out there with the sound of the river and Marina’s calm, sweet voice telling me to close my eyes and find my way home, I knew I could do anything.

Let’s talk about the paintings of you hanging in the Louvre in Paris. You sat with Robert Wilson to recreate some historic works. Which were the most challenging? I have a connection to old souls, so there was sort of a séance element where I asked artists of the past to give me permission to feel their pain. When I was doing [Jacques-Louis David’s] The Death of Marat, I lay in each position for six or seven hours. I also did my own piece, where I hung upside-down for 45 minutes in bondage. It wasn’t meant to be sexual. I believe everyone has the power to be an art hero. You don’t have to wait until you’re dead to be appreciated, [even though] this is the age when they wait until you die to write nice things about you.

At a time when you were criticized for gaining weight, you created the body revolution movement and asked fans of all body types to post photos of themselves on your site. Did seeing their bravery help your self-esteem? My self-esteem was fine. I didn’t have a problem with my weight—the world did. The body revolution was just my way of liberating myself from that criticism. That’s what I wrote ‘Do What U Want’ about. Did it heal me? No. But I was happy to see so many fans stripping naked to show they didn’t care either. I want to remind everyone that the people who win Nobel Peace Prizes and cure diseases are not supermodels. Your legacy does not need to be a perception of beauty that’s not realistic.”

In 2009, you gave a speech at the National Equality March in Washington and called it the most important moment of your career. The rage in that speech was directed at U.S. President Barack Obama. Do you think it had an effect? You don’t know exactly where your activism is going to land. I was just one person speaking out. I grew up with gay friends, and when I started to come out with my music, they were still there, supporting me. How could I sit down every night making money off a ticket that they’re buying for my show, knowing that they don’t have the same rights that I have? I can’t do that.

Donatella Versace once told me you are today’s quintessential role model. You’ve written a song about her on Artpop that hints at how misunderstood she is. Why do you think she’s so misjudged? Nobody really knows anything about her. She is the most kind, loving, sweet woman. The point I am making with a song like ‘Donatella’ is that you love to love her and you love to hate her. It’s this thing we have in common. The truth is, we’re having a blast doing what we are doing, so that’s our silver lining. We don’t mind being these blonde martyred icons as long as we have our champagne and our Marlboro cigarettes whenever we’re together. I went to her house in Milan last year, and I was having a really tough time. I was exhausted on the Born This Way tour and she opened her home to me and had 50,000 white roses in the house. I don’t always have anyone to look up to, but seeing Donatella, where she is and how far she’s come, I get to have a role model.

You’ve managed to give the Fashion Police less power by showing up on the red carpet in meat dresses and giant eggs. Was this a conscious choice? My whole life is a fucking red carpet. The red carpet has become ridiculous. All these women are starving themselves to look amazing because this is their big moment? Why shouldn’t the press adore them every day for being entertainers? I use the red carpet as a stage. I was supposed to do something at the VMAs that they didn’t let me do. I was very upset about it. I wanted to have five or six Gagas walk the carpet in all my looks from all my videos. A lot of exciting things happened at the VMAs, so it was strange that I couldn’t do that.

You’ve written three songs with the word ‘fashion’ in the title. What keeps drawing you to this contradictory, extreme, egotistical and often magical world? It was always the thing that made me feel like I could be anything, no matter what anyone said about me. When I felt small or unimportant, my ability to sew things and invent myself like an art piece meant everything. That’s why I’ve always cared about my costumes and my show. It’s never been marketing… fashion gave me a sense of who I am.

The case for teaching teens to question ‘the classics’

High school students need the tools to understand the political implications of reading classic literature like Shakespeare and Hemingway in school, a new study argues.

“As a field, we need to think about how our disciplines are advancing certain stories, silencing certain stories, and socializing our students to think that what we’re teaching them is neutral,” says Jeanne Dyches, assistant professor in Iowa State University’s School of Education. “We need to have a conversation around why certain texts are taught year after year.”

The titles often at the top of high school reading lists are considered “classics” or required for “cultural literacy,” she says. However, the authors—typically white European men—do not reflect the diversity of students in the classroom.

Dyches says assigning these texts without questioning issues of race or gender may exclude students who do not see themselves in the text, and make them feel their voices are not valued. This lack of questioning also normalizes the experiences of students who belong to dominant groups.

Messages of power and oppression

That is why Dyches encourages educators to consider the ideology ingrained in the texts they assign, and give students the tools to question what they are reading. For a new paper, which appears in Harvard Educational Review, Dyches spent time in a high school literature class teaching students to critically examine and question the discipline of English language arts.

Students reviewed more than a century’s worth of national studies on the titles most commonly taught, national and local standards for recommended readings, as well as local and state curriculum policies. The high school was located in a predominately white, suburban Midwest community.

Her research found the lessons sharpened students’ awareness and recognition of messages of power and oppression within classic literature. By the end of the study, 77 percent of students—a 27 percent increase—recognized the politicized nature of teaching these traditional texts. Dyches says while most students were uncomfortable talking about oppression and injustice in a specific text, students of color demonstrated more awareness of these issues.

“We all have different experiences and reactions when we’re having conversations that challenge us to question and consider race, gender, and sexuality and all the messy intersections,” Dyches says.

“It’s OK for students who have never heard these things to still be grappling with their own racial understanding and social-cultural identity. But we must still create opportunities for students to learn, wrestle with, and apply new critical lenses to their educational experiences and the world around them.”

‘I can’t relate to this’

Dyches surveyed students at the beginning and end of the study to understand their perceptions and relationships with the texts they were reading in literature class. In their responses, students described the texts as “bland and ineffective,” adding that they “can’t relate to any of it,” yet they still considered the titles to be “timeless” and important “to improve upon their reading and writing skills.” Dyches says students read the texts because they believed doing so would prepare them for college.

Their responses illustrate a commonly held belief about the “value” of classic literature, which is based more on tradition than literary standards, Dyches says. The problem is students and educators alike do not think to question why this is the case. In fact, Dyches says until she started researching social justice issues, she was unaware of the historical perspectives and ideologies she promoted through the texts she assigned.

Dyches wants to empower students to question what they’re reading in class, and for teachers to recognize the political context of their decisions. Educators, like all people, have different biases or beliefs, Dyches says. However, if teachers know this and address those biases in the classroom, she says that is a step in the right direction.

“We’re all political beings and whether you recognize it or not, you’re always teaching from your belief systems. It’s essential to recognize and understand how our ideas or beliefs influence our teaching. I would argue you’re being just as political when you assign Macbeth as when you assign The Hate U Give,” Dyches says.

How to keep the classics

After working with students to identify the political structures in literature, Dyches asked students to tell the story from a different perspective and bring marginalized voices into the conversation. She says the assignment challenged students and forced them to think about how the changes affected the story or how they comprehended the story.

For example, students rewrote Romeo and Juliet to address race by making Romeo and Juliet an interracial couple. In the paper, Dyches describes how the students incorporated social media into the story as the characters used Twitter to write “love tweets,” creating a national social movement documented through the hashtag #lovehasnobounds.

This is one way teachers can continue to teach classic literature—by questioning how race and patriarchy influence the narrative, Dyches says. While the study focused specifically on literature, she would like to see students apply the same critical thinking skills to other disciplines and aspects of their lives.
