Fantasy AU Basics!!

it’s a seaside kingdom! not gonna name the monarchs or the kingdom itself because i don’t gaf. its economy is obviously based around fishing but the surrounding town has become a hotspot for artisans

like. scrunkly if u see this. there’s probably a royally mandated school for sciences, meaning i can shove martor into this! yay!

but. there is no queen, or it seems that way, she was an oceanid nymph who saved the king little mermaid style and fell in love. she retreated to the sea (idk why don’t ask) and their daughter is a selkie! dayum!

liv’s got an ursula/yzma vibe. soooooo sorry but i’m a sucker for those purple ladies. she’s still on the basis of being drawn by the need for knowledge and a splash of mad science, but it’s spliced in with a bit more magic

liv!!!!liv has a curse! damn! it’s the same as the dunmeshi thoughts i had, but the basics are that she’s got her soul mixed with a kraken’s. she can summon the beast if she’s at the water (it takes a lot of strength) and she can conjure tentacles on her back like usual yayy

i always get embarrassed bringing up that they have such a large age difference, luce is a full adult in all iterations but i never want it to come off weird. whatever anyways they’re around the same ages here anyways (mid twenties nd early forties)

but. their first true time together was when luce was 22/23. her father is flanked by advisors and overseers who have slowly made him more and more almost demanding. she’s 22 and hasn’t married, so the school of piranhas crowding her father have been insisting she gets sold off to a neighboring kingdom

she was in the court when they all decided this, so she ran off in a flurry of seal fur to the laboratory and just pleaded for a potion to calm her down. a lot of liv sorta messing with her for a little bit, mainly just because she’s been slowly treated worse and worse by the court, but after a while she warms up promise

unfortunately, for a cliff side palace, the only exit to the ocean is through the lab (the excuse was that liv needed easy access to more materials) so liv nd luce meet more and more often as luce keeps trying to sneak out to the sea

hehe thank u thank u ... i hope so too !!! im working on moving away from the template i started with, it's a lot of work figuring it all out but im having a blast, coding is a pain in the ass but once u get the hang of it its so cool seeing what uve been working on coming together all nicely :D html is generally an easier language to learn than something like javascript or python, since it's much more immediately readable. it has a lot less potential than those two, but it doesnt necessarily need to be the most complex thing in the world! u can still get a lot out of it, and most things tht i dont understand immediately i can usually infer what theyre Supposed 2 do and tht makes it a lot easier. much less math too LMAOAOAOA

Some Guy, in ye olden times, is just fuckin around with fungi and makes this crazy powerful fungi! the ultimate life form!

it eats him

it takes over his body and uses him as a vessel to spread to lots of other people

(since obvi no one at this time has special healing powers like sly, the fungi reaches the Brain Controlling point pretty fast)

the fungi basically decimates the town

a few brave survivors manage to kill everyone who was infected, the fungi on them kinda just. dissolves away

except the originally infected guy. idk why maybe bc he was the first one to be taken by the fungi so its like,,,, hardier or something

(hes basically dead but the fungi still seems healthy)

they smash his head into a pulp and bury him

"Phew! Thank goodness that's over with" they say! "No one will ever be infected by this thing again!"

since the fungi needs about an hour of contact to spread, im saying he was just Sciencing long enough to catch the fungi. or he took a bite

however im also saying that since the fungi was mostly dead, there was no actual physical evidence of him catching it before he went ta sleep.

So I made a college/highschool Fionna and Cake au.

Aka hear me talk of my au--and ART :D

There's some design stuff I've made Prismo, Gary, Fiona, etc. the idea is they live in a semi-magical world run by gods and everyone goes to school to either study the world like on real school or to learn how to do a magical job for all.im calling it wishcollege au bc I called it that when I was working on prismo's idea he is going to this college to learn to become a wishmaster

he's just an intern/ wish trainee rn. The Valerian wish college is run by Principle Scarab or- Principle Devon Nolan is their first name but it's all fake. Valerian Is a plant w flower that treats ocd symptoms, migraines, hyperactivity,, and. But also bears pin/white/magenta flowers that attract insects. I thought it's be fitting. He's a pic from Prismo's PG in my sketchbook:

Now the highschool, Valerian highschool is run by Gary Schmitt-bubblegum whose been around practically forever. Prismo goes here too bc they're still in HS and just duel enrolling, they're in HS bc they show no ambition but in college bc they seem extremely excited and ahead of your wisher peers when it comes to wishmaster training specifically. There's still over 17,650 yrs, an adult I suppose although still sorta teen. Studies a few thingsHe also has an interest in band and plant biology but wishmaster is their career. Here's a pic of Fionna and Simon doodles just bc:

And here's one of Principle of college, Scarab/Nolan Earl m.p. Devon: he just hates his job being stuck as a college professors full time. When he was taught he showed interest in what he was learning but was forced into being someone that taught the same exact thing instead doing it himself. He feels betrayed but too lawful (bc in the human realm he does have follow citizenship standards and laws) to do anything heinous about it. He's mostly demon part pure light but not in story sense in a biological sense made of light instead of other actual matter particles. Of course Prismo is part Demon too so they somewhat find common ground but Prismo got too invested in career and doesn't care about that phase. The scarabs a bit of an ol' grump. The only class he teaches himself is the materialization of wishes through light formation class (long name obviously not what they call the class fr xd) which is what they majored in and excelled. He was too authoritative to be a wishgranter so a prof and principal is great. They get into run-ins with Prismo or Raj lots bc it cares about her studies but not her school's rules. Nolan doesn't place much concern on this, views Prismo as a headache and silly but not a threat. Fun, they are buds though as time moves on and his grades improve too (iykwim -jk im jk) .

Professors for highschool I know are: -Bubblegum, not Gary but we have a few repeats from AT as well FAC universes bc they're combined on this one alternate world based upon a more modern Ooo. So Bubblegum teaches bioscience and in college as well as HS the botany club/class! :D -Marcy is a band instructor but also substitutes for botany class in high, Bonnie and Marcy are dating still.cx bc it's a good ship -Ellis P. Is band instructor as well he does brass since Marceline does woodwind and string

-Simon teaches wizardry and magical objects bc it's a mix of what they did as ice king, what they used to do, and what makes more sense in the universe am dplanet they're on. He'd obvi be a prof + when he was ice king I feel like he'd teach smthn as well such as like science behind temperature and stuffs. -Betty is also a teacher there and is partially still combined with Golb. She teaches mythology at first, then, science and magic behind love, then both but ends up taking up religious studies a lot when they get old. Simon and them are happily married but they both gets harassed at work alot

I say band but they have orchestra not band, that's for both college and HS that it's orchestra.

I think making The Force into smthn based on the four forces/interactions of physics is a neat idea. idk about the spiritual side of it but if you give people different capabilities with each of the different forces you get cool fun powers stuff going on. classic shonen action stuff.

and maybe the all have laser spears with heads powered by their different forces and they take different shapes or whatever. why spears? bc it's different and idk maybe you could play with the symbolism of having to keep the tip of your power far away from yourself.

if you use the strong force your spear has a big fan head, and you can hold things tightly together, idk. I'm kinda just going on abt this so I don't lose it until someone wants to talk to me abt it.

okay but really the spiritual side of it is really important isn't it. because otherwise what's the point of there being Jedi and not just like, weird psykers (which surely some of them are, I love weird psykers). I could maybe see these Jedi-likes having some origin story as meditative researchers or something. or, no, idk

okay so like if the Jedi are a diaspora, do they even have a confirmed origin, or does every little sect have their own telling? bc that matters. I mean, they all have their recent origins painted with their various biases, oh the war was a failing bc we weren't strong enough, we were too strong, we weren't vigilant, we were tricked, etc.

does the origin before that matter? I think not specifically but it matters to me writing it to have a framework that explains why they were all like that as a religious institution. with the SW Jedi, idk about any specific mention of their origins in canon aside from the sacred texts, but that's because there doesn't really need to be, it's implied in their teachings and how they are. which! is tough for the setting I'm making here.

so, I guess that means they should all have something in common that can imply their origin, like the Jedi. the Jedi's touchstones are knights and monks and it really does feel like those imply how they started out really well. I do feel like I'm leaning a bit more on science for them (even though they're going to be using mystical powers to access the sciencey stuff) so I'm tempted to go with that.

but then idk it's tough, the more I stray from them being like he Jedi, the less it is the thing I wanna write, bc it sprung up from thinking about the Jedi. maybe they're knights and monks and scientists, just add that on. I sorta like that. I'll think on it. it definitely leans into being suborned to the machinations of war, happens to scientists all the time.

this was more than I thought it was but I feel pretty well resolved about this part so that's nice =) now I just gotta figure out how that four forces thing works. but uh hey on the bright side electromagnetism is right there so there's still force lightning =P

I didn't rlly answer any questions about their spirituality. uhhhh let's see. everything is alive, from single cells to tissues and muscles and organs and bodies, all the way up to groups and cities and countries and planets and systems, the entire galaxy, it's all a living being, and it's speaking to people by chance, like everything is by chance. so they study and meditate to be mindful and stay close to it, and fight for it since it is passive and they are not.

now that's good enough for me, I like that well enough. and the Sith-ish guys think the galaxy is alive also probably but that it gives you power to use for yourself, and that selfishness is inherent to everything. I like it, it all fits well enough while being just a bit off.

anthropomorphizing the galaxy is fun. if you're near the core are you closer to it, or are you closer near the edges, where you can see all of it at once, like a big eye looking back at you? there's poetry there! that's a good sign.

dumb star wars setting ideas ive had forever that I've wanted to explore. thinking abt them bc I'm rewatching clone wars and while it's pretty good, it has serious "a little bit bad so it makes you wanna do something else better" syndrome

okay so like. following the idea that the Jedi of the Republic had become suborned to the forces of the dark side without knowing it, it's clear that there was something deeply wrong with the Jedi as an institution, like, obviously, that's what the prequels are all about.

they're part of this war machine and don't seem to care, they can't follow anything like Jedi ethics radically. so, obviously, they shouldn't exist as an institution. (also in some ways if you're doing a star wars setting it's just boring to make it similar to anything in the skywalker saga).

but also Jedi are like, a whole cool thing in my brain bc I grew up when the prequels came out and I played way too much kotor. so! my first idea (that probably isn't super original but it's not like I heard it somewhere and wanted to use it): the Jedi Diaspora. plenty of worlds all over the galaxy have enclaves that are utterly, often dogmatically, cut off from each other.

I think there's a lot of space to play in there, a bunch of little idiosyncratic orders, enclaves, councils across the stars. some deeply involved in a planet's governance or politics (like on Dantooine in kotor 1), and some reclusive (like what would have been and sorta was on Telos in kotor 2), and plenty in between. it's fun because you can put a lot of different stories a lot of different places, inspecting and scrutinizing aspects of the Jedi as they were, as they should have been, as they once were, and so on.

but okay, if that's the state of the Jedi, what's the Big Government in the galaxy like? and in some ways it's much more interesting to say there isn't one, but I think more interesting than that is saying that there is and there isn't. like, the core worlds of the Republic like Coruscant and Carida could have any number of things going on with them, though I like the idea of some kind of military government (seeing Coruscant in s5 of the clone wars as this like, grand production facility and staging ground for Republic forces was really interesting tbh).

just, a nearly secular federation of core worlds is neat to me, mostly bc it means old settings like the Jedi temple are off-limits to Jedi, and that's fun. are they allowed to make pilgrimages there? maybe some and not others, that would be neat. plus honestly, something about it being all military and boring means you look elsewhere, which I like. plus hey they're sending soldiers elsewhere, so again we don't have to keep looking at Coruscant closely (the underworld of Coruscant is so so boring to me, and I feel like I want less time in the Jedi temple and the Senate building).

okay. but let's see, that probably leaves a bunch of the galaxy to the wind right? so let's fill it up, what's in there?

mandalorians are cool (in kotor 2 ways), and in a lot of ways they feel very rome-like. they expand, conquered people become mandalorians, repeat. that's fun! or, fun to play a game where that's part of the world. and hey, that plays fun with the Jedi Diaspora. Jedi are often on worlds that get conquered, what happens when they are? space to play there =)

alright but that's not enough, you need more players on the galactic board. I find Hutts and crime syndicate stuff boring generally though they're a big part of the setting, and Sith stuff hasn't come up yet (the galaxy is probably kinda tired of Jedi and Evil Jedi running around bc I can't stop myself from thinking about kotor 2 and so no one puts up with Sith power grab bullshit anymore. but.)

so what if there's some fun pirate Republic on the Outer Rim to invert both crime stuff and the old Republic stuff? and just to top it off and make it interesting, what if their state religion is Sith-based? what does that look like? if you treat the Sith-religious like people and peoples that used to just be criminals try to be taken seriously, what happens? and I think the answer is smthn rlly interesting that I'd want to play to explore tbh.

idk that I have more than that rn. there would probably be a stray Jedi fleet out there somewhere (bc I listened to Twilight Mirage), id want to figure out Something for droids bc like, cmon, and also god it feels like Star Wars is full of superweapons so maybe there's something about how commonplace they are bc that's more fun than going "oh no there's another Big Laser!" all the time. uhhhhh idk, how common are force powers, or lightsabers without Jedi gatekeeping them? who knows. what's the latest form of dangerous racing vehicles? who cares? maybe me

hey just a PSA for anyone doing academic research and sick of the fact that u get stuck behind a paywall all the time, there's a site called sci-hub that's basically aiming to have free copies of all research papers available and it's sooo useful, I'm sure a lot of you have access to databases thru unis etc but for ppl like me who aren't in uni yet or ppl who just want to read up on research articles for non academic purposes it's super good to be aware of, not totally legal but I could debate the ethics of paywalls all day lmao

I think basic programming and computer science should be considered part of basic computer literacy and should be part of common knowledge given how much computers influence us and how much their influence will grow. It should be taught in school to a basic degree as a required course.

I live in the US and ever since I read angus thongs and perfect snogging in middle school I’ve wanted to understand how British school works. I think we can exchange some information here 🤣 ok so in the US it’s like this: every year you’re in a “grade”, and the school year starts in late August or early September and ends in late May or early June, with a two week break around Christmas that they try to pretend is secular. The first “grade” is “Kindergarten” which you typically start at age 5, so usually everyone is having the same birthday over the course of the school year, but not everyone’s birthday falls just so, and some people skip or repeat grades. After Kindergarten the grades go up like normal i.e. “first grade” “second grade” etc. and the grades are divided up into “schools”. There’s usually elementary (K-5), middle (6-8), and high (9-12) school, but a lot of places alter the delineations or add more. For example, I had intermediate school (5-6), middle school (7-8), junior high (9-10), and high school (11-12) but that’s a bit ridiculous. Then once you graduate 12th grade, you get your high school diploma, and you can go to what we call college at that point, which is “higher education”. There are requirements to “get in” to college, and it costs money to attend. You usually have to take some racist tests and get good scores and send your scores off with applications to colleges and pray that you get accepted by a college that doesn’t cost a million dollars an hour. You are required by law to go to grade school (K-12) but if you drop out you can take a test called the GED to prove you Know Enough and it’s the equivalent of a high school diploma but you don’t have to suffer in actual high school. So how does British school work? I’m thrilled to find out wtf gcse means 🤩 lmao <3

so with the classes you take, how does that work do you just get to choose as many as you want or do you have required classes? and what is an AP class, like is it more advanced? and do ppl take them to help with college applications or smthn? also (sorry im just so curious😭) what is a gpa? like... i have never understood how that works or why its needed lmao.

ok so with english schools we have 'years' but you start at age 4 in reception in primary school. After reception you start year 1, 2 etc and primary school is reception to year 6 (age 4-11). Then in year 6 (age 11) you take these exams called SATs (for maths, english comprehension and english grammar/spelling) which are to help determine your grade targets once you start secondary school, but also if you apply to private secondary schools or even some public schools getting good SATs results helps you get in.

So then secondary school is age 11 to 16 or 18 (depending lmao its a bit complicated). At 16 you do GCSE's which are exams to help you get into sixth form or college (not equivalent to college in the US). At 14 you can choose the subjects you want to take for GCSE's which again is based on your targets. So for example everyone has to take english, maths and at least one science but i had quite high targets so had to follow the baccalaureate where i was required to take all three sciences, a language and either geography or history but then could also choose 2 others (i took food technology and computer science😁). Then you study just those subjects for the next two years, with the exception of P.E. and R.E (religious education🙄) which everyone has to take up to age 16 but you don't have to take the exam for.

Phew ok😅then at 16 you go to sixth form or college. Sixth form is either its own building or part of a secondary school and you have to take either A-levels or BTECs, both are qualifications but you need A-levels to get into university. BTEC's are more career focused i believe, so things like engineering, construction, media, IT etc. A-levels are basically just your usual schools subjects and you can take 3 (sometimes 4) and then when you apply to uni they have specific requirements. Like if you want to study medicine you need an alevel in biology and chemistry for example. Then colleges are only for 16-18yr olds, they offer courses that are again more career focused, for example by 17yr old brother is in college atm doing photography.

The school year is pretty similar here i think, we have a 6 week summer holiday, 2 weeks at christmas and 2 at easter but we also have half-terms which is basically a week off in the middle of each term (so in october, february and may/june). University is completely different though bc we dont get the half-terms :(

Ive noticed, especially in real big fandoms, people within them definitely get like, Hiatus Brain when the content is still relatively fresh but its been a while since anything new came out and start taking things apart to a degree and in a way it was never built to be taken apart to, and that CAN be very fun and often is, but sometimes it goes to kinda stupid places with stuff like hlvrai because people will start trying to apply like, a serious realism-based critical lens to things that are kinda fundamentally detached from it on a genre level? like what you said with the wile e. coyote thing.

Its like if people did discourse about Goku being an absent father, like yeah its technically true but goku lives in a cartoonish false reality that doesnt treat this as a good thing but also doesnt write it as having much consequence because Thats Not Even Close To The Point of What Dragon Ball Z Is

If you consider the overall events of hlvrai in a fashion thats TOO realistically grounded it will eventually cease to even be much of a comedy anymore bc the surreally consequenceless cartoon violence is a good chunk of the bit.

I think the other person meant it more like ‘on a genetic level this body part is cloned more based on a human vs a kryptonian’ way, and I mean lighter colored eyes are more sensitive to light in general so i could see a ‘them being more human/lighter colored makes using heat vision damaging/more difficult’ or smthn. i mean its all fake science and fake alien species anyways who knows how it’d all actually work especially within the canon of that specific movie

okay not to go on about this esp based off second hand information and conjecture but like...... if ppl are not joking and r*well genuinely decided to make the mage's name cadwallader. i feel like that really underlines the continuity problems WS had and i can only assume AW/TWB also has, bc r*well just... doesn't seem to have remember what CO was satirising and what it wasn't.

like, a huge thing was made in WS about them not learning geography at watford - but in CO they learn political science, which is pretty damn mundane, so... it's not smthn we could ever have inferred, bc the original narrative implies the opposite. and likewise, there was definitely snobbery and interpersonal-level abuse in CO, but there was no sign of mages expressing so much as a *desire* to exercise significant systemic control over the normal world. (bc their snobbery towards *human normals* takes the form of secrecy and exclusion, not direct dominance!) but then WS tries to teach them not to anyway, and treats the organic system of speech-magic as exploitative for no clear reason except to find more to criticise them for. bc r*well seems to think that p much any criticism of h*rry potter should more or less apply to her world. but CO isn't just 1:1 with h*rry potter. it's different.

and then of course WS failed to expand on and actively undermined many of the wider criticisms of fantasy in CO and the whole "monsters are people too" message which is where there's actually potential for the most incisive and specifically queer satire But That's Enough About That :)

which brings me to why d*mbledore is a good name and cadwallader sucks.

albus d*mbledore is mischievous. he is eccentric. he enjoys the fiddly and pointless parts of both magical and m*ggle life. he annoys people for his own amusement and smiles beningly on as if he has no idea they hate him. he plays mind games when there are far easier ways of achieving his goals because he's a little obsessed with the idea of himself as a benevolent puppet master. he is, essentially, an odin figure: your amiable, ambivalent, manipulative, morally dubious grandfather.

a name that suggests bumbling and humming to oneself is perfectly fitting for the front d*mbledore presents to the world.

david the mage, however, is none of the above. he's intense. he's impatient. he's openly vengeful and bitter that he hasn't been listened to. he's not yet middle aged. he's paranoid about wasting time and energy and always wants to just get to the point. he does speak in riddles and mythological allusions at times, but he doesn't treat them like a game - they have the urgency of a cult leader or conspiracy theorist. when he plays mind games, it's essentially for one of two purposes: "shut up and leave me alone" or "shut up and do as i say". he isn't playful and doesn't seem to enjoy his missions - he conceives of them as trials, battles to win, obstacles to overcome. he has a god complex, but not as odin - as the bringer of a saviour, the father of a christ-figure.

the name cadwallader has been held by a few different historical figures and might well form some relevant reference, i suppose, but it's obscure. not only will a lot of people not pick up references, they won't have ever heard the name before. (they might even get it wrong. as i have done repeatedly.) it's cumbersome and will find it very hard to shake the word association of "codswallop". the only reason for picking this name over something like idris that i can think of is that "magical mentors" as a category are just meant to have long, silly, obscure names - but that's the problem. not *this* mentor.

– youpi doesn’t look after his appearance too often but his hair is combed and slicked down really well, and it’s because pouf is the one that actually took to brushing his hair and gelling it down. youpi just lets the others do whatever they want with it whenever they feel like it. one time pitou braided his hair styled it into little cornrows.

– youpi has a habit of adopting the ticks of others. that means sitting criss cross applesauce like pitou, or crossing his legs like pouf. he often doesn’t notice when he does it but the other guards do, and make it a common practice to do certain things around him so that he’ll take it on as well.

– youpi is secretly a lil delinquent when he wants to be. he’s always regarded as the quiet, unassuming one so nobody ever expects him to do anything. it’s because of this that he gets away with so much. meaning that he can hide pouf’s violin once his playing gets too annoying and and pitou unfortunately, ends up being the suspect of youpi’s doings.

– youpi is only really only comfortable with the other royal guards and actively seeks out their company. he only trusts pitou and pouf enough to be considered vulnerable around them and though he sleeps often, he only sleeps when he knows that they’re around.

– It’s canon that pitou has a phone, so the first time he discovers some of it’s other functions, he fills the phone to the brim with pictures of himself and the other royal guards. Sometimes its selfies. Sometimes it’s things taken off guard, like a blurry picture of sleepy youpi bobbing his head up after nearly nodding off into sleep. Sometime’s its videos on pouf’s 5 hr violin recitals. A lot of it is what other people would imagine to be useless but pitou holds a lot of those memories close to heart and he’s glad he has somewhere to save them.

– i’ve said this before, but multilingual royal guards schlap honestly! pitou and pouf are smart enough to pick up various languages from the books they read, and they pass on their knowledge to youpi via how often they speak it because he’s an auditory learner.

– pitou uses his knowledge of science and chemistry to create stuff  for youpi after one time he displays interest in one of pitou’s science experiments. whenever pitou is in immediate access to a lab he goes out of his way to make little multi-colored slimes, or smthn like hot ice. youpi is normally sorta embarrassed abt it but pitou enjoys overindulging him and is happy someone takes interest in his experiments for once. Sometimes youpi serves as a lab assistant. he doesn’t actually know what he’s doing but he’s useful.

– i know i’ve said this before but pouf possesses a diet consisting mainly of liquids, based off of the fact that adult butterflies only ever really eat nectar and water. pouf can’t digest solid food too well and most of what he eats is either mashed up or liquified. he ends up drinking a lot of his meals out of a straw. youpi often takes the liberty of mashing up pouf’s food for him.

– loves sweet foods, especially anything with sugar because they’re very appealing to him and the only type of flavor that stands out to his sense of taste the most. he’ll add pounds upon pounds of sugarcubes to his teacups.

– pouf is canonically a carnivore, but given his genetic makeup i wouldn’t be surprised if he actually tried a fruit he’d enjoy it much more than anything. especially sweet fruit like strawberries, kiwis and oranges. the first time he takes a bite he’s hooked.

– the moment pouf gets immediate access to the salt in the palace kitchens he spends any moment he can adding it to whatever he eats. the other royal guards find it very, very odd but butterflies love their minerals and they can’t stop him so that’s that on that.

– pouf is cold blooded and cannot regulate his body temperature. butterflies either hibernate or migrate when the temp drops and the first time pouf lives old enough to witness winter in east gorteau, he takes longer to warm up and almost completely stops flying because he can no longer flush his wings with blood. he sleeps with the first time in months. youpi, who has the highest body temperature, ends up having to share warmth with him.

– pouf is able to flare up his wings so quickly from their resting/folded state because he flushes his membranes full of blood.

– pouf can manipulate himself on a molecular level and imagine the range that comes with that. i like to imagine him imitating different people, creatures and even inanimate objects, and all at the prompting of pitou to use his ability in far more creative ways.
