FreedomWorks, the once-swaggering conservative organization that helped turn tea party protesters into a national political force, is shutting down, according to its president, a casualty of the ideological split in a Republican Party dominated by former President Donald Trump.

“We’re dissolved,” said the group’s president, Adam Brandon. “It’s effective immediately.” FreedomWorks’ board of directors voted unanimously on Tuesday to dissolve the organization, Brandon said. Wednesday will be the last workday for the group’s roughly 25 employees, though staffers will continue to receive paychecks and health care benefits for the next few months. The development brings to a close a period of turmoil for the organization. FreedomWorks laid off 40 percent of its staff in March of 2023, and as a result of a drop in fundraising, its total revenue has declined by roughly half, to about $8 million, since 2022, Brandon said. In an exclusive interview with POLITICO Magazine, Brandon said the decision to shut down was driven by the ideological upheaval of the Trump era.

After Trump took control of the conservative movement, Brandon said, a “huge gap” opened up between the libertarian principles of FreedomWorks leadership and the MAGA-style populism of its members. FreedomWorks leaders, for example, still believed in free trade, small government and a robust merit-based immigration system. Increasingly, however, those positions clashed with a Trump-aligned membership who called for tariffs on imported goods and a wall to keep immigrants out but were willing, in Brandon’s view, to remain silent as Trump’s administration added $8 trillion to the national debt. “A lot of our base aged, and so the new activists that have come in [with] Trump, they tend to be much more populist,” Brandon said. “So you look at the base and that just kind of shifted.” This same split was creating headaches in other parts of the organization as well. “Our staff became divided into MAGA and Never Trump factions,” Brandon said in an internal document reviewed by POLITICO Magazine. It also impacted fundraising. [...]

In an interview with POLITICO Magazine last September, an ex-FreedomWorks employee claimed that the organization under Brandon’s leadership had turned its back on its values while Trump was in office; during this period, for example, the organization issued tweets spreading election conspiracies and deflecting criticism of the Florida legislation that came to be known as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill. “He let a bunch of right-wing nutjobs turn FreedomWorks into a MAGA mouthpiece,” the former FreedomWorks staffer said.

Brandon said he “did my best to balance the two competing ideologies.” In the midst of this turmoil, FreedomWorks launched an effort last fall to rebrand itself as a more centrist organization, one that could target the independent voters that its leaders believe would be more receptive to libertarian ideals. But the effort failed to get traction, Brandon said, largely because the independent voters viewed FreedomWorks as a right-wing group. As a result, Brandon and the board began discussing the possibility of shutting down FreedomWorks altogether. “This has been my life for so long and to turn the lights off, it’s a real emotional thing,” said Brandon, who joined FreedomWorks in 2005 and has been president for about a decade. “The problem is that it’s just not the best vehicle for our [libertarian] principles and values set.” FreedomWorks, which was founded in 1984, grew out of the Koch-funded group Citizens for Sound Economy. FreedomWorks split apart from the Koch political network in 2004.

Right-wing libertarian-flavored organization FreedomWorks closes it doors. The organization rose to stardom during the Tea Party era and faded as Trumpism took over the party.

Smug Wendy's, also known as Wendy-chan, is an anime-style anthropomorphic personification of the @Wendys Twitter feed, which gained much online notoriety for its funny and sarcastic responses to customer complaints and questions. The character is based on the restaurant's mascot Wendy Thomas.

In 2012, Wendy’s VP of Advertising, Brandon Rhtoen hired Amy Brown to run Wendy’s social media accounts. According to an interview with Mashable,[6] Rhoten hired her to be a “challenger with charm…the intent of the social media team is to represent the brand’s voice as best as they can. When folks say, ‘roast me,’ we’re going to have fun with that.” The Twitter account went viral in 2017 after an infamous interaction with a disgruntled customer who took issue with their slogan “fresh, never frozen,” leading to media coverage and praise from other Twitter users. In March of that year, Brown left the Wendy’s corporation and resigned as their social media manager, but the feed continued to post tweets in a similar playful voice

On February 19th, 2017, Twitter user @ScottyArtz tweeted, "This is what I imagined when I first looked at @Wendys twitter, rofl." The tweet included an anime-style illustration of the character

On April 14th, 2017, Twitter user @professorSugoi tweeted several illustrations of an anime depiction of the @Wendys Twitter feed, along with the caption “100% convinced that @Wendys is a smug anime girl”. Within 10 days, the tweet gained over 16,600 likes and 7,900 retweets.

On April 18th, Redditor CarnivorousL submitted @professorSugoi's illustrations to the /r/awwnime subreddit. On April 22nd, Twitter user @coralus_SFtweeted a Smug Wendy's illustration with the caption "She's beauty, she's grace, she's savage". The same day, Tumblr user kyotemeru-arts posted an animated GIF of the character along with the caption "Have some frosty for that sick burn 🔥🔥🔥"

On April 25th, the internet humor blog Dorkly published an article titled "The Internet Turned Wendy's Twitter Into a Smug Anime Girl," highlighting several examples of Smug Wendy's fan art. That day, Redditor Skeletoonz submitted a post about the illustrations to /r/MemeEconomy, urging readers to "invest with caution."

That seems to be the latest so far. Cassidy Haynes says the deal is "agreed to in principle" but not "finalized." Helwani says the deal is not "in place," Thurston says the parties are not "near a deal," and TMZ says the deal is not "set in stone." All four of those quotes can be true at the same time if WWE-Saudi talks are in progress but waiting on due dilligence and other paperwork. It's also possible WWE isn't even negotiating with the Saudis, though that would mean Haynes is way off-base.

Ok this is actually crazy but only to me specifically. Story time:

Ok so last night I was watching Magic Funhouse on youtube, and I cant recall exactly which episode but it must've been the first two bc that's all I watched with my friend. A character quoted this line and I thought to myself "huh, weird, everyone seems to quote that one tumblr post" and moved on.

I go to sleep. I wake with in insatiable urge to know which came first, the chicken or the egg- Did mr king of comedy Brandon Rogers see that on tumblr and work it in uncredited or did he accidentally create another viral meme that we all know and love with no credit to himself. Hmm

So I start digging. I'm all over tumblr and I'm searching like crazy with our busted ass search function. I cant find the post. I go to google and type it and all that comes up is a tweet from September 2017. Okay, I think, I must have seen it as a screenshot on tumblr, makes sense why I couldn't search for it bc its all text based on here. I go to imdb. The first two episodes of Magic Funhouse aired December 2016. I think to myself, wow, absolute madlad has done it yet again.

I go to make my little post about my findings and decide its best to include both a screenshot of the tweet, imdb page, and clip of where the line is said. I rewatch the entire first two episodes in full. The line is never said.

I conclude that I must have drempt this crazy coincidence and move on with my day. But now here we are, several hours later, and THE POST that I spent all morning looking for is just here. By complete chance. On my dash. Is the universe mocking me? Is this some sort of sick joke?

According to the New York Post — the outlet that broke the story in October 2020 — as reported on Saturday:

Leon Panetta, a former CIA director and defense secretary, John Brennan a former CIA director, Mike Hayden, a former CIA director, and Jim Clapper, a former director of national intelligence — who all once said The Post’s reporting had ‘all the classic earmarks of a Russian information operation,’ — declined or did not respond to request for comment about whether the latest disclosures had changed their opinion.

On Friday, journalist Matt Taibbi released internal Twitter emails discussing the company’s decision to suppress the story — which included locking the Post‘s Twitter account, deleting tweets that linked the story, or tweets that even referenced the story.

The emails showed that Twitter officials decided to take these actions on the possibility the story contained hacked materials, even though there was no evidence or a government finding of any hacked materials. The emails also showed that some Twitter employees questioned using that justification.

Then-Twitter communications official Trenton Kennedy asked other officials about that justification: “I’m struggling to understand the policy basis for marking this as unsafe.”

Another official, then-Vice President of Global Communications Brandon Borman, asked, “Can we truthfully claim that this is part of the policy?”

Five days after questions were raised at Twitter about relying on a hacking justification to suppress the story, more than 50 former intelligence officials published an open letter on October 19, 2020, that argued that, based on their experience and expertise, the story came from the Russian government.

“If we are right, this is Russia trying to influence how Americans vote in this election, and we believe strongly that Americans need to be aware of this,” they wrote.
