Henry Pym became Ant-Man for the first time in the anthology comic Tales to Astonish 27, cover date January 1962. He was created by Stan Lee, Larry Leiber, and Jack Kirby. The original story was presented as a pulp/b-movie sci-fi tale and not a superhero adventure. I like to think that Barney actually went to MIT and maybe got his undergrad in mechanical engineering? Maybe he took a few courses at MIT Sloan School of Business? Ooh maybe he got his MBA from there?

I started to think about this recently as I watching Season 7. I know Barney probably made a joke about going to MIT during the Drunk Train episode but I could actually see it happening! He makes all these elaborate mechanisms to get women out of his apartment or for hiding important things! For instance, moving the Storm Trooper releases “The Playbook”, opening the Scotch bottle a certain opens up another book in the wall! Then the train tracks under the bed to switch out the beds!

Maybe he started taking business courses at MIT and that’s why he’s so high up at GNB + the parent company and why he makes hella bank!

The Foilies

The Foilies are awarded by EFF and Muckrock. This year's honorees are an entire Coen Brothers movie's worth of bizarre excuses and shenanigans. Top honors (the "Not-So-Magic-Word" award) goes to Augusta County, VA:

The staff at the Augusta County Sheriff's office somehow got the impression that if they wants to make an official communique immune to a public records request, all they had to do was add the words "NO FOIA" to the memo.

Needless to say, the law doesn't work this way. When a county employee anonymously tipped Breaking the News off to this practice, the organization quite naturally filed a request for every county document containing the phrase "NO FOIA." Given that the county's employees had thoughtfully tagged every document they suspected would get them into trouble with these words, it's no wonder that the request delivered a bumper-crop of news stories of incompetence and corruption:

These scandals come from just 140 of the 1,212 "NO FOIA" emails the county admits it has on hand – the remainder have been illegally withheld. Breaking Through News and The Augusta Press sued the county for the remaining emails and won – though the county has indicated that it might waste public funds appealing the decision:

There are so many great – by which I mean terrible – stories in this year's Foilies that it's hard to pick just a few to highlight, but boy oh boy, does the Chesterfield, Virginia Police have a doozy this year:

The police of Chesterfield County, VA claim that the names of every police officer on the force should be kept secret, because one or more of those cops might someday work undercover. As EFF writes, "It’s not at all dystopian to claim that a public law enforcement agency needs to have secret police!"

Now, I don't want to give you the impression that all this nonsense stems from small-town-Deputy-Dawg-Barney-Fife-type dimwits with harebrained schemes. Big, important statewide offices are also in the mix. Take Arkansas governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who spends millions in public funds for her family to travel around America accompanied by an Arkansas State Police detail:

Governor Huckabee Sanders's relentless waste of public funds generated a steady, humiliating drumbeat of news coverage. This made the governor both sad and angry, prompting her to attempt to block FOIA requests for her travel spending, and when that failed, to call a special session of the legislature to enact sweeping limitations on Arkansas's sunshine law:

The governor's farcical wish-list of anti-transparency measures didn't just put severe limits on the disclosure of her use of public funds. It also contained a raft of administrative changes, like an end to the practice of FOIA plaintiffs being able to recover their legal fees if they successfully sued the government for illegally suppressing disclosures.

In the end, Governor Huckabee Sanders was defeated – a torrent of opposition to the bill removed its most odious clauses, though, as EFF notes, it's a near-certainty that Huckabee Sanders will try again in the next legislative session.

The military got in on the act this year, too: the USAF's FOIA portal was altered so that filers had to swear that their request pertained to "clearly releasable" records – then failed to define "clearly releasable." After a PR fiasco, they walked the changes back:

Now for the Mississippi goddamn moment: the Mississippi Justice Courts obstruct access to two thirds of the public records on search warrants:

A lawsuit by the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal is seeking to force the state's courts to obey the law:

Now: on to Wyoming! Wye not? Democracy may "die in darkness," but culture war bullshit thrives in the absence of sunshine. When (former) Wyoming Superintendent of Public Instruction Brian Schroeder and Wyoming Department of Education Chief Communications Officer Linda Finnerty decided to waste public money on an private "Stop the Sexualization of Our Children" event, they correctly judged that secrecy would be key to pulling off the scam:

When Wyomingans sought details about the pro-censorship event, Schroeder and Finnerty manufactured "misleading statements" about the event and its funding:

Schroeder also illegally withheld his text messages from a public records request, ignoring state's attorneys' advice (instead, Schroeder took bad legal advice from his friend, a private attorney named Drake Hill, who told him he didn't have to follow the law):

The resulting lawsuit turned up 1,500+ texts and emails – enough damning evidence to discredit Schroeder and Finnerty, and to set important new precedent for sunshine laws in the cowboy state:

When you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bills. That's the strategy of both the Baltimore Police Department and the Richmond, Virginia Police Department. Baltimore's cops told Open Justice Baltimore that they would need to hand over one miiiiilion dollars if they wanted to see the department's use-of-force records. The Baltimore PD argued that the public interest fee waiver didn't apply to use-of-force records, because there was no public interest in knowing about how the only people in the state legally allowed to hit, kick, choke and shoot other people used force:

Baltimore police eventually dropped the ask to a mere $245k, which a court totally rejected, saying it contributed to the impression that the BPD had "something to hide":

👁️ - How do other people perceive this oc? How close do their first assumptions come to the truth?

Sloane: She's tall and beefy and has a naturally scowling resting face, so people tend to be really intimidated by her at first. She IS kinda scary and extremely direct when she's in Business Mode, but when she relaxes, she's got a sharp-eyed, witty charm about her.

Mark: He seems to give off trustworthy vibes, which is technically true, he's not going to rob or attack anyone, but the flip side to that is he has trouble trusting anyone else, including himself. 

Everett: if it looks like a con man, quacks like a con man...

🌊 - Does this oc have a secret or repressed desire?

Sloane: She's actually deeply in love with Diane Fishwoman (they are also business partners and friends with benefits), but neither of them are physically capable of admitting any sort of emotional vulnerability.

Mark: oh, well, he's had the ability to express desire mostly beaten out of him, so all of them are secret. 🤷

🌨️ - If this oc had a day free from all their responsibilities, how would they spend it?

Sloane: She'd spend a good chunk of it still dealing with things pertaining to her responsibilities, like cleaning her gun and maintaining her car and restocking her emergency supplies, but the rest of it would be spent sitting on the back stoop of her building, staring off into space with a pack of cigarettes and a cold drink.

Mark: Ideally: At the house of a close friend, just... hanging out. Sitting on their couch while the friend plays video games or watches a movie, helping them with housework, chopping vegetables for dinner, staying up way too late just existing. Realistically though, since he doesn't really have any close friends anymore, he'd enjoy a nice hike through a state park or a nature preserve or something like that.

💭 - How is their mental health? Do they struggle with guilt or shame?

Sloane: She says she's fine (who even is, though??) but she has some ptsd from her history of being paid to put herself in harm's way that she self-medicates. 

Mark: lol. Lmao. (Somebody PLEASE get this man a therapist and some very strong medication) 

⚡ - Does this oc have any unusual or “irrational” fears?

Sloane: Not a lot gets to her, but mold and mildew really does. She also can't eat peaches because the fuzzy texture reminds her too much of mold

Mark: Pushing aside his long list of traumatic fears that seem irrational on the surface if you don't know the context, he's got, at the bottom of the list, a deep fear of mascot characters. Mall santas, barney the dinosaur, disneyworld walkaround characters... Hates them with a burning passion. Which is a shame because he would be ADORED at furry cons!!! Mark you don't understand what you're missing!!!

It's okay! I've been meaning to take that out anyway. I only put it in a while back because I was getting overwhelmed with asks about the fic and then it was making it harder to write it because I was basically putting all the ideas there vs the fic, if that makes any sense. I still don't have any more specific headcanons I'd share, as I've shared a lot, but I would love to answer any questions people have!

Anyway, as for Mark and Jackson, I don't have a whole lot but if you have any specific questions about the fics, please let me know!

I based this off "My Boy" specifically.

Jackson will start his double board certification soon so he can specialize in plastics and ENT. Mark will be stressed about his mental state being able to handle it as Jackson's been under a lot of stress lately.

Mark checks to make sure Jackson is breathing when sleeping, even when he's in an older space.

Jackson doesn't have a screentime limit, but mostly because he doesn't need one. He'll easily play with toys or find other stuff to do. Mark also doesn't buy into "screens will rot your brain".

Co-sleepinng helps both Mark and Jackson. One, Jackson gets the comfort he needs and he feels safe with his dad. Two, Mark sleeps better knowing that Jackson is right there, breathing and safe.

If it's not obvious, Mark is an extremely anxious parent and works hard to make sure that his anxiety doesn't rub off on Jackson.

Prior to Addison, Mark would go on dates and have one night stands, but he always went on them during Jackson's shifts. And he'd never bring anyone back to the apartment. He wasn't about to expose Jackson to any of that.

Additionally, Mark never intended to date someone seriously until now. One, his heart was still caught up on Addison. More importantly, he knew Jackson was not in the right place until now for him to date and potentially get a mom.

The Yankees hoodie is the equivalent of a security blanket for Jackson that he can bring everywhere because it doesn't give away that he's a Little.

Jackson tends to prefer 90s cartoons/children's shows because they were all things he wanted to watch when he was younger but Catherine never let him since he had to be "a big boy". That includes Barney (of course), Arthur, Little Bear, Rugrats, Bear In The Big Blue House, etc.

After Jackson moved in, Mark changed all the pillowcases in the apartment to silk ones to ensure his hair was protected.

Because Jackson tends to like a lot of older shows that may not have a ton of merch you can buy at stores today. Mark gets a lot of stuff off eBay, Etsy or at thrift stores.

This was one given to me by @cianmarstoo but Mark has an intern use a Cricut to make stuff related to his 90s obsessions.

Jackson is a "spa baby", aka he loves lotions, face masks, etc. One, he has super sensitive skin. Two, it helps him de-stim.

I didn't go into this in fic, but Jackson debated keeping the "Avery" in his name. Because while he has a complicated history with his family, it's still a huge part of him and helped him get to a certain point in his life. So, he changed his middle name to that. But still took on "Sloan" as a fresh slate.

Though, Alex still calls him a "nepo baby" because even if people don't know he's an Avery...Mark is still a well-regarded plastic surgeon that people fly from all over to see. And Jackson points out he literally has Grey in his name, so is he one to talk?

Fantasia/Potentia (Most to Least)

- Seeker (they're afarit)

- Abdiel (an angel who also immerses himself in human culture and is therefore bound to have eaten humanity's spiciest foods at some point)

- Nora (from Argentina [and is also a nephilim/half angel which would probably make her spice tolerance considerably higher])

- Velia and co. (also from Argentina [she's a system but like I'd assume bodily speaking they'd probably all have a similar/same spice tolerance])

- Akane (who would try and pretend it's higher than it actually is)

- Akiko (whose diet mostly consists of soybeans but)

- Barney (spice tolerance is restricted to drinks)

- Nadetta (a child)

Descendants of Hazel (Most to Least) (BY SEASON because there's so many of them)

S1:

- Holly (child, but her mother [Japanese-coded] fed her things with chili oil in it at a young age)

- Hana (similar case as above due to being sisters however Hana is pickier than her younger sister)

- Iris (her Sámi mother tries to replicate her [Chinese-coded] father's dishes but they're not usually as spicy as they would've been had he'd been alive to cook the dishes)

- Nahid (coded Persian Iranian, but mostly eats French food due to the absence of her parents ans uncle from her life)

- Richard (Desi-coded father who makes dishes of that culture helps with his spice tolerance)

- Millie (Hungarian[-coded], there's not much else I can say)

- Will (eats anything)

- Finn (picker than Will but still has a similar spice tolerance)

- In'am (Afro-Arab-coded mother makes Arab dishes for her to make sure she remembers her maternal family's culture despite the government trying to do otherwise)

- Kanna (got used to In'am's mother's food after coming there every so often to receive tutoring from In'am)

- Géh (Southeast Asian-coded. I have nothing else to say.)

- Eku (eats ONLY Japanese food due to being, effectively, a nationalist and can only handle that spice level as a result)

- Yumi (sometimes sees her German-coded father who puts paprika and horseradish in meals sometimes)

- Eva (most likely eats something adjacent to Moroccan/Amazigh cuisine at home which can be spicy sometimes and therefore has a high spice tolerance)

- Lana (Korean-coded mother and Ukranian-coded mother both USED TO cook things for Lana prior to their deaths which did give Lana a head start in the spice tolerance department, but with her parents both gone it probably went down a bit to the level of Spanish/Italian food)

- Sloane (Indigenous Taiwanese food, which her parents feed her, consists of peppers, but it's mostly just the peppers iirc and otherwise not many dishes have spices)

- Chloe (died prior to series [can't really eat anymore]) (but as a serious answer it's still the lowest but only by comparison since it's still relatively high)
