the Married Barisi series by barbaXcarisi - E, 75k

i'm possibly a little biased since marriage in trouble is my all time favorite romance trope, but man the characterization in this series is phenomenal, and the cases are so well done. so much angst and love and plot. there's a scene in Damage where baseball is used as an extended metaphor for childhood abuse that lives in my brain rent free. truly a mark of how literary fanfiction can be.

au where sonny owns a bakery and barba is still an ADA. classic meet cute, very italian, and lots of family drama. shit gets angsty as their relationship develops. someone needs to save sonny from himself.

You Made Them Feel Like They Had the Devil Inside Them by cypress_tree - E, 12k

GODDD this fic. a retelling of the corrective rape episode from barba's pov. he and sonny bond over being queer and get together over the course of the case. lots of feelings about queer identity and love and loneliness. def made me cry.

Reservations (Hotel and Otherwise) by cypress_tree - E, 11k

yet another cypress_tree banger, yet another established relationship angst fic. rafael and sonny go on a roadtrip and contemplate marriage. basically an emotional, funny, beautiful relationship study.

tooth-rotting fluff of rafael and sonny shopping for their wedding registry. have read this 100000 times.

Ain’t For the Best by vi3nnawaits - E, 15k

punk sonny au 😵‍💫 does things to me. think sexy smoking, tattoos, etc. culture/class tensions because rafael is still a fancy lawyer. sonny also has this thing about enthusiastic consent that literally rewired my brain chemistry.

tender PWP oneshot where rafael has difficulty orgasming. sonny takes care of him. character-defining for me personally.

the inevitable sonny internalized homophobia fic. my boy is just deeply catholic, and copes poorly. probably one of the most accurate depictions of his character on ao3. heart-wrenching, angsty, and sexy.

the Where Home Is series by artform_virtue - E, 81k

lastly, i will plug my own longfic. established relationship angst (obviously) where sonny has been working undercover for months, develops ptsd, and has trouble reintegrating into his old life and relationships. very angsty. more sex scenes than you will know what to do with. light d/s with service top sonny. write the fic you want to see in the world, etc. etc.

Fandom Fic Rec: Throw Back Edition

I'm making a game cause I'm bored, and I've been thinking about old fandoms I've been in and the fics that have left an impression on me! So here are the rules:

Chose 5 fandoms you are no longer active in (as in actively participating/creating in), and then chose 1 fic for each fandom that's stuck with you. Tag 5 people when you're done!

1. Fandom: Harry Potter | Pairing: Draco Malfoy/Harry Potter

Forgive Those Who Trespass by: Lomonaaeren (AO3)

This fic is filled with heavy and disturbing subject matter, so if you check it out please mind the tags and then expect a little worse. Still, it's a highly captivating story, and the pacing is phenomenal. I love this writer a lot, actually, and when I was actively reading Drarry it turns out they wrote a lot of the ones I enjoyed.

2. Fandom: Law & Order: SVU | Pairing: Rafael Barba/Sonny Carisi

I'm pretty sure, aside from the credit I give the TG fandom. This was actually my first introduction to the time loop concept. It's one I come back to, ironically, over and over again. I love pretty much everything about it, to the point where I once asked to do a podfic (and boy howdy did that slip through my fingers .-., rip to non-planning Alex of old) of the piece because I loved it so much!

3. Fandom: Star Trek (2009) | Paring: Leonard McCoy/Pavel Chekov

The Gap Between (Fanfic.net) by: McStories (Fanfic.net)

Talk about an age gap with this one (ties back into the title actually) and a rarepair at that. I don't even remember what fic got me into this pairing, though I know who to blame for dragging me into it. This fic runs the gauntlet of characters having misconceptions, preconceived notions, and learning how to get the fuck over themselves. I love this fic to pieces. It's one of the few I've read multiple times, and if you're open to the ship I highly recommend giving this one a shot. There is heavy subject matter, however, so be mindful.

4. Fandom: Teen Wolf | Paring: Derek Hale/Stiles Stilinski

(not so) Pure Imagination by: @halekingsourwolf / @theroguesrandom | theroguesgambit (AO3)

The concept in this fic was the first time I'd ever seen it done, and god, is it done well. It's fun and sexy and filled with a glorious amount of guilt and pining. Wonderful all the way through and one of the few Sterek fics that immediately comes to mind! If you're into Sterek and you haven't read this please do yourself a favor and go on!

5. Fandom: Stargate: Atlantis | Pairing: John Shepard/Rodney McKay

With the downfall of old personally owned/hosted fanfic site, in the dark ages before AO3 and Fanfiction.net, where LiveJournal was really poppin', it's an honest to god shame how many amazing fanfictions have been lost to the cruel ways of the internet, and no fandom for me has been hit as hard as the Stargate: Atlantis fandom. I was so happy to see that this fic lived on with Auburn's personally maintained archive, and I hope that some of you get a chance to read this fic as well as some others from this author.

Starting with the easiest:

A New Mode of Living - Speirton post-war get together. For those who may not know it, there are dogs and metaphors and a whole lot of softness. Just absolute tons of yearning and affection and softness. Period-typical homophobia but very mild.

Keep Stepping Forward - Barisi - Where I took the terrible exit for Rafael seriously (I am usually very immature about it) and wrote a story about the why/how/what happens after that I personally think is better than anything SVU ever did for Barba after that (Please note, much like Warren Leight, I do not have a Peabody, but I also don't fucking lie about it).

But I Will Hold on Hope (And I Won't Let You Choke) - Phlint - I got in very early on the Clint/Coulson train, and I still very much enjoy this one.

Under the Surface - RosieLemmons - Look, I am very, very proud of Always Standing By, but I am very, very proud of this little baby of a fic because I feel like I really captured a set of feelings and a moment that are extremely important to these two.

I Love You, You Idiot - Josh Lyman/John Marbury - I hadn't written West Wing fic in ages, and I fucking nailed it while ALSO still being in love with the greatest rarepair of all time.

I hate that JK Rowling being the worst person has made me feel so conflicted about reading and loving HP fanfic but fact remains this is an all time fave and I still think about it regularly.

Obsessed is an understatement. I have a PDF of this saved on my phone and laptop. I stealth printed this out at work so my mum could read it. I fucking ADORE this fic. I DON’T EVEN SHIP IT BUT FUCK ME IT IS A COMPELLING STORY ugh

4. Every Dog Has Its Day - Law and Order SVU (Rafael Barba/Sonny Carisi)

The most wholesome fic. My ultimate feelgood fic. Which is a reminder I need to reread this now, it’s been a while.

5. Mode & Moment - Law and Order SVU (Rafael Barba/Sonny Carisi)

God this series. This beautiful, painful, unfinished series. Will it ever be finished? Unlikely. That doesn’t make it any less fucking incredible. It’s one of the most hauntingly beautiful things I’ve ever read.
