The Original Text for How America Got Its Name
I recently purchased the vinyl for the 1979 version of In Trousers and in the liner notes it has the entire original text for How America Got Its Name. It's quite different from the 1985 version with the main difference being that Marvin is the only one who says anything; it is a solo monologue. There are other differences, but I would rather not list them all out. Anyway, here we go:
Marvin: (Dressed like Columbus) Columbus didn't use to be a sailor. He was first and foremost director of medicine at a prestigious institute for doctors in Eldoro. That's the truth. But nobody ever talks about his medical career anymore. He was embarrassed out of his job. Harassed. Made to be the butt of jokes at medical conventions. This is what happened. One day--now this is the truth--one day outside Poma del Fuego, he picked up a social disease from a man with red hair and broad shoulders like his mother. By the time Columbus got to the Verona Baths, he had cancres all over his chest where once bronze hairs grew. And back at the Institute no one could fail but notice an incredible diminution of intelligence on Columbus' part. He was half insane by the time they strapped him to a ship, and pushed him to sea.
MUSIC
With him on that boat were other socially diseased persons. From the few clippings extant, it appears they had a ball the whole trip and screwed like bunnies, never worrying if finally they were going to contract the dread disease, because they all had it, you see--so they debauched the whole night and awoke refreshed. This went on for thirty-four days.
MUSIC
I am going to discover Cincinnati, Columbus cried. Why Cincinnati, they asked him. For my Aunt Cynthia and Uncle Nathan, he said, who died four years earlier in a plague which my Institute never quite found the cure for. This is what the Jews do, he added, name other countries for the dead.
MUSIC
Halfway out to sea, or on the thirty-fifth day, Columbus' cancres began to disappear. He stopped moaning in the middle of lovemaking and began to say: "How about that, young man?" or sometimes, boasting, "Tell me you didn't like that." Well, everyone was glad to see Columbus becoming his old self again, but everyone was saying what a prick Columbus was. In his diary he wrote: "Whatever it is I discover, it better not give me any lip."
MUSIC
Fifty miles off Martha's Vineyard, it became clear that everyone's cancres had disappeared, their brains restored, bodies once again sound; and everyone had a good laugh about it, maybe whistled with relief, maybe gave a few pecks on the cheek here and there, but there was no heavy petting, you can be sure of that. "Hey, keep your hands off me fella"--you heard that pretty often on deck. And then later, "I said keep your hands off me!" Well, Lord knows, many lonely evenings, clippings extant say, because each man feared acquiring the dread disease which had brought him there in the first place. In his diary Columbus posed the question: "How many passionate persons can fit comfortably on the head of a pin?" He pondered the question, he sat with his chin resting neatly in the palm of his hand, and he replied. Question: "How many passionate persons can fit comfortably on the head of a pin?" Answer: "Merely one. Or... I don't know." (MUSIC BEGINS) I don't know.
MUSIC
So there they were on board looking out to see this new land Columbus was going to discover. And soon the blue horizon disappeared to be replaced by a magnificent array of greens. Fir green, evergreen, lime green, dark green, light green. The entire palette of greens stood maybe only a day's float ahead of them. No one moved. No one was allowed to move. When they were maybe fifty or seventy-five yards away, Columbus could not withstand his enthusiasm any longer. "My land is so beautiful," Columbus cried. "So beautiful," they agreed in unison, like a chorus, like a barbershop quartet multiplied by fifteen. 'So very beautiful." There were tears in Columbus' eyes. "Men," he turned to them, he looked at every one straight in the face, he was very moved by this discovery, "Men, no longer do I call this land Cincinnati; rather, this fine, green, beautiful land which I discovered today, I name AMERICA! After Amerigo Vespucci. A young man I met in Poma del Fuego with red hair and broad shoulders like his mother.
MUSIC
The thing about explorers is: they discover things that are already there. Columbus closed his diary and went ashore.

It’s not always easy to get the ball rolling,
Summers arrived, the sun has got its hat on, though it would be more suitable to wear a mackintosh.
It’s all the same nowadays, with no formal bank holidays planned for national barbershop music appreciation day.
How the barbers pole spins round and round like a merry go round
I’ll give you a pound! >:( I collect stamps, not kickings by foot
But I may give you a pound 💴 if you were to give me a fine stamp for my collection
Doctor doctor! I think I’m losing my religion! How can it be lost? Religion is all around. In the swaying of tall grass and a few other things
I may have been praying to the wrong bloke, only today I find out it is ‘Jesus’ not ‘je Sui
If je Sui is not real, then who visited me in my hour of need, when the cows didn’t come home?
There’s was a flash and a bang of purple smoke, and I yells, ‘how now brown cow!’ .And I was not left guessing guessing till the cows came home as there the herd was outside!
Been inactive recently, sorry for having a life I guess
I’ve accidentally made an account called hashbrow-16 while trying to log into this one, what a Columbus.
Lots of love

Run the Fade
Listen up, we need a resolution, because we have so much confusion with these headlines that we’ve seen across the internet.
They really trying to play in our face during #BlackHistoryMonth 🤦🏾‍♂️
Black men been setting trends and rocking all forms of fades long before whoever wrote a think piece was even born.
#FridaysAreForTheFellas and fades are for the people who have gone to the barbershop and picked number 32 off of the poster that has been a ritual for US.
Matter fact, let us know in the comments who rocks your favorite fade ⬇️

132 E. Fifth Ave is a three-story brick building at the busy corner of E. 5th Ave. and Summit St. It was built in 1919. (No idea why the uppermost 5 feet is a slightly different color brick than the rest of the building.)
Over the past 93 years, the ground floor has typically housed restaurants and bars while the upper two stories have been apartments. On the west (Summit St.) side of the building is a stairway leading down to a basement space that was a barber shop for many decades.
Little trace remains of any of the businesses that have called this spot home–except for the barber shop. At the top of the stairs is old, faded text advertising a “10¢ Shoe Shine.” Back in the day, a shoeshine was part of the service at any good barbershop. Last barber to occupy the spot was James Malloy back in the mid-1940s so the sign is at least 65 years old.

AJ Fernandez and his team in Nicaragua create some of the world’s finest premium cigars. Flat out fact. His “New World” line pays tribute to the discovery of tobacco and its introduction to the rest of the world in 1492. Tobacco was first introduced to Europeans in 1492 when Columbus landed in the Americas. Columbus wrote in his diary, on October 15th, 1492, that he observed "an Indian sailing in a canoe with water, food, and tobacco leaves”. This discovery has continued to enhance our lives, and the lives of you our fellow cigar enthusiasts each and every day since. Fast forward to modern day Nicaragua where AJ & his Father Ismael collaborated on a premium cigar blend for the very first time. In 2014 they delivered this box pressed masterpiece wrapped in Nicaraguan Dark Habano to the world, furthering the advanced development of the centuries old allure of the pure tobacco leaf. Since that time, AJ has expanded on this line to include many other variations including the "PURO ESPECIAL”, a robust all Nicaraguan or “Nica Puro” blend, as well as the mild & flavourful “CONNECTICUT” featuring a Connecticut Shade wrapper that is grown in the good ol’ US-of-A. Discover a New World today & learn what we mean when we say that the AJF line up is in a world of its own. Coronavirus update:
3rd confirmed case at work but won't say anything other than it was first shift. Rumors are it's in the area of work in.
No eta on when I can start catching up on backlog but at this point it's looking like June.
Barbershops will reopen where I am next Friday (I really need a hair cut!)
Red white and boom! (The fireworks show for Columbus) is CANCELED. I was hoping they would still air the show on tv and just not let anyone gather downtown.
Chances are Bexley will cancel their fireworks and parade. No news on the do dah parade.

Miss Behavin’ Columbus 2019
Tumblr media
This past weekend was Miss Behavin’s 3rd annual event, held this year at Land Grant Brewing Company in Columbus, OH. I’m including some of my favorite shots taken by the talented Erika Gene Clark.
I got involved in working on this event about two years ago when Courtney Bryant, the main mind behind the magic, asked a few of her friends to be involved in helping out with her idea. Courtney was developing a platform where she could simultaneously celebrate females doing things that aren’t historically seen as very female while also promoting and supporting a charitable cause.
Tumblr media
Miss Behavin’ promotes female riders and drivers through featuring them on social media and showcasing their cars and bikes at the annual event, in hopes it will inspire and encourage other females, of any age, to aspire to anything they want, regardless of gender biases. But equally important and at the core, it promotes and benefits non-profits and charities through generous donations from local businesses that are auctioned off at the annual event.
I remember attending Miss Behavin’ on year one at Seventh Son. That year they raised $328 for Peace for Paws. I think I might have met Courtney for the first time there. By the second year, I was involved and helping with planning and building a brand. Year two was held at North High Brewing in the rain, with a silent auction and a few local vendors selling goods. Despite the weather we had a good turnout and raised $1063 for Ruling Our Experiences.
This year, our chosen benefactor was Advocating Opportunity, who provides comprehensive services to women and men who have experienced sex or labor trafficking. Trafficking is a huge problem here in Ohio, and we were pleased to be able to raise over 2k in donations thanks to all of those who attended.
Tumblr media
To boot, the crowd was huge and it was a rad ol’ time. I’ve never been a regular attendee to bike and car shows, but what was cool about Miss Behavin’ is that there was a little bit of everything there; from choppers to dirt bikes to vintage street cruisers and hot rods. I brought Uncle Rico out, my ’87 Ford E150 Fiesta Camper Van, with my 79’ XR 185 on the hauler, and left the doors open for folks to see my custom build. There’s something voyeuristic about watching people look at and talk about your ride with you standing there as the anonymous owner. I love seeing the reactions.
Tumblr media
I gave one kid the grand tour, which takes a total of five minutes and consists of turning in a circle and pointing at the stove, the spice rack, the raccoon portrait, the fishing pole holders, the convertible couch / bed, the toy van on the van dashboard, and the 80′s/90′s dirt rider mural on the fridge front. It’s a point of pride, especially when I think of three years ago when I had it stripped bare and slowly started re-building the interior, mostly from scrap and donated material. Uncle Rico is an amazing machine, but he paled in comparison to the Firebird, Boss 302 and GMC Sierra Classic staring directly at him (I see you, ladies). And then those paled in comparison to the vintage Chevy truck parked across the alley. I should have brought my Falcon, but it has a track record of breaking down at Miss Behavin…it’s done so every damn year.
Tumblr media
My 1990 Kawasaki KDX 200 was leaned against the brewery wall next to rows of bikes of all sorts. Choppers, vintage stock bikes, modern dirt bikes with sumo setups, dual sports, etc etc, but I was seeing so many familiar faces I barely had time to look at them. It’s inspiring to me to get to talk to other women that will rattle off every small detail about their own bikes with the same amount of enthusiasm and love that I have for mine, so my only regret from the event is not being able to spend more time doing that. Columbus has an amazing scene of female bike and car enthusiasts, and MissBehavin’ was definitely proof of the growing motorcycle community, both male and female.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before I got into the planning and efforts of putting on Miss Behavin, I barely knew many of the women I know now through being involved. Since year one, it’s gone from “they” to “we” and now I call them close friends; women I reach out to for things, women that I hope know they can do the same to me, women that I hope I get to ride with more this coming year. And we’ve now all watched this event grow significantly in three years time. Not only because of our efforts but also because of a community of people all willing to give something to a bigger cause. That’s what it’s all about. Through Miss Behavin’, I’ve learned that the amount of time and effort it takes to plan and execute an event like this can only be met with relentless persistence. It sometimes seems like too much to take on. Until you’re there, at the event, and can catch a moment to really look around at the people, the bikes, the cars, and my sick van ; )
Then it all makes total sense.
Tumblr media
If you didn’t make it this year, come out to Miss Behavin’ 2020.
And ride / drive in with your friends.
