Fandom: The Inspector Lynley Mysteries

Pairing: Barbara Havers/Thomas Lynley

She’s seen her boss go after different women at different times, although that is an unfair phrasing, really. He just happens to be lonely now and then, and who would not be, if they had lost their wife like this, so no one can begrudge him a little fun, and who knows, he might find someone to give his mother an heir after all –

The point is, it is none of her business, so Barbara always keeps away during those times. It never lasts long – two weeks, three weeks and he’ll suddenly be standing at her place with takeout again as if no time has passed, and she’ll let him in because she is weak and wants this, wants to spend as much time with him as he can until – until –

She tells herself that it is inevitable because it is. Seimone liken Thomas Lynley won’t stay alone. It’s a law of the universe that such things don’t happen. And Barbara… she’ll always be his friend. It will be enough. It has to be.

That’s what she thought five years, one year, two months ago.

And then eh started on her.

Or – no, that is unfair. It’s not like he suddenly began trying to seduce her in the middle of the squad room. She can just imagine what Winston would say to that.

But still – it’s –

He compliments her appearance now, never in a creepy or unsettling way, but genuinely, he smiles much more than he sued to, and when he does, his eyes always twinkle in that certain way, and last week, he even made her promise that she’ll accompany to Howenstowe for Christmas, although she was quick to add “If there’s no one else you’d rather take with, sir” but he only laughed –

She would be a fool not to see the signs, that is what it boils down to. She would be and she is not.

And so, she has to figure out what to do. Not that there are many options. It’s not – nothing will come of it, nothing ever does, not when it comes to home and things like that, and even if it did… she’s hardly wife material. So really, whatever happened would just drag on  for a bit and then turn into nothing, but a nothing that would haunt her for the rest of her life, so a nothing that she cannot afford, cannot allow.

But he won’t take no for an answer – but she’s being unfair again. She hasn’t even tried to tell him No, although she’s managed to create a bit of a barrier between them as of late, trying not to drop by his place so often or pretending she’s going out when he suggests coming to hers. Wriggling out of invitations to the pub, that sort of thing, although she always regrets it afterwards, and never does it two times in a row.

Still, he has noticed, of course he has because this is Thomas Lynley they are talking about.

The entire afternoon he’s been talking of some college dinner or another, the sort of thing he attends now and then out of nostalgia, really, and she has been ignoring hints that she should accompany him because what would that look like – everyone would think – God – she can’t just –

 “I don’t think it would be appropriate, sir” is what she finally settles on because it’s the best she can do, it’s the best anyone could do under these circumstances, but for some reason, it’s not enough this time.

Lynley looks at her, then sighs and gets up, coming to stand in front of her and she doesn’t know where to look because she just knows the truth will be there to be read on her face.

“Barbara, I – I like to think we are old enough to dela with this. I think I’ve made it rather clear where I stand. Just say what you want”. She doesn’t think she has ever heard him so defeated, not even after –

But she won’t go there, and who says he even means it like that, of course he doesn’t, what is she even thinking, of course it’s not –

But he’s looking at her in a way no man has ever looked at her before, and she knows this is it. He won’t ask again. She can simply deny that there is anything going on and they’ll always stay friends and colleagues and –

“You”. The word escapes her against her will. Oh god, she’s done it now, how can she possibly look him into the eyes ever again –

And then he kisses her sand all her worries fade away.

Almost all of them. naturally, this can’t last – but why should she not enjoy it for as long as she can?

Later, years later, she will watch him bounce their first grandchild on his knees and laugh about it.

Update: My ILM fanfiction is complete now!

Welp, I finally took the plunge into writing fan fiction. The first 3 chapters of an Inspector Lynley Mystery story are posted on FanFiction. One more chapter & a short epilogue will be added. Would love to have your thoughts on my 1st attempt!

I know EG has always said Tommy & Barbara will not be a couple. It looks like she is an ep on the new series, curious to see how it goes. I have always shipped them. Mostly I think because of the chemistry between Parker and Small. What I really want to see is Parker and Small with reoccurring roles on the show, preferably as a couple. Maybe they could be a Superintendent & Chief Super, but she should totally outrank him.

I've just found out that (the news article is from July 2024 but I wasn't aware until last night) there will be an Inspector Lynley Mysteries reboot made by BritBox and I must admit that I have mixed feelings. It is just that I will forever be annoyed that the original series got cancelled too soon and without completing the sixth season. There were usually four episodes per season and only two were made/aired in the final season. The show just ended but didn't have an ending. Nathaniel Parker and Sharon Small will always be Tommy and Barbara to me.

Now, this doesn't mean I won't give the new Lynley a chance. There have been plenty of adaptations of Sherlock Holmes shown on TV from Jeremy Brett, to Benedict Cumberbatch, to Johnny Lee Miller and I've liked each one.

Oh, BritBox streaming service had better keep the OG Inspector Lynley Mysteries to watch once they release the new one.

Im not super active in the Pokemon fandom but I got the urge to make my OC and my friends are too enabling so here is my trainer

Bio: Sharkie works on and off at the Veilstone Department Store. She never managed to make it far as a trainer. If you ask her why, she'd say it's too much of a rat race, and she refuses to fit in any mold.

She dropped out of trainer school because everyone was funneled into types and she hated it. She prides herself on not being pinned down to a specific type, whether it's her style or her Pokemon. Approaching her you might think she'd have mostly grass, maybe fairy Pokemon. But she'll keep you guessing with what she sends out next!

Houndor was her first Pokemon found abandoned as a puppy, so they have a unique relationship. Elvira the Hounddoom is almost more of a sister to her, and will listen to Sharkie's commands maybe 70% of the time. But Elvira always comes in clutch when she's needed most.

Don't tell anyone but Tink the Koffing is her favorite. Her baby boy, always at her side. (My actual fav pokemon is Koffing I love him so much shoutout to Koffing) Sharkie has a tattoo of his toxic symbol on her arm, and she doesn't mind his smell. As a haver of IBS she feels a kinship with him in that way, actually. Anyone who has a problem with Tink isn't someone Sharkie is interested in getting to know.
