Water and Spirit
“I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.” (Matthew 3:11) As we follow both the Old Testament story of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and the New Testament story of Jesus as an infant, a young boy, and a man, we find that they are parallel stories. They…

the road was long and rocky, but mushrooms grew from my hand, and I have not forgotten you, for the shoots are sprouting now, and they bloom like flowers, and the spores will spread like the spirit that you have become, wherever I go, because the flower that you are is a fruiting body

John the Baptist Prepares the Way
1 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, 2 during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness. 3 And he went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet,
“The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. 5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall become straight, and the rough places shall become level ways, 6 and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.’”
7 He said therefore to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Bear fruits in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham. 9 Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”
10 And the crowds asked him, “What then shall we do?” 11 And he answered them, “Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.” 12 Tax collectors also came to be baptized and said to him, “Teacher, what shall we do?” 13 And he said to them, “Collect no more than you are authorized to do.” 14 Soldiers also asked him, “And we, what shall we do?” And he said to them, “Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, and be content with your wages.”
15 As the people were in expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Christ, 16 John answered them all, saying, “I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”
18 So with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people. 19 But Herod the tetrarch, who had been reproved by him for Herodias, his brother's wife, and for all the evil things that Herod had done, 20 added this to them all, that he locked up John in prison. — Luke 3:1-20 | English Standard Version (ESV) The Holy Bible, English Standard Version. The Baptism of the Eunuch
Artist: Salvator Rosa  (1615–1673)
Genre: Religious Art
Date: circa 1660
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Location: European Art before 1945, Chrysler Museum of Art
Description
This is an oil on canvas painting. In the painting Philip, clothed in white and pointing upward, baptizes the kneeling eunuch, whose companions respond with confusion and surprise. The scene unfolds in a barren, rock-bound landscape, a gloomy and forbidding setting typical of Rosa. Characteristic, too, of Rosa's restive, proto-Romantic art is the galvanic mood of 'storm and stress' that courses through the scene and manifests itself particularly in the Ethiopians' theatrical gestures, wide-eyed expressions and exotic costumes.
Philip and the Ethiopian. Acts 8:26-40
This passage, from the Bible's Acts 8:38-39, describes the baptism of an Ethiopian eunuch by Philip, where after the baptism, the Holy Spirit suddenly transported Philip away, leaving the eunuch to continue his journey filled with joy, without seeing Philip again.
Key points:
The Eunuch: A high-ranking official from Ethiopia who was reading the prophet Isaiah on his chariot while traveling.
Philip: A Christian evangelist who encountered the eunuch on the road.
Baptism: After Philip explained the scripture to the eunuch, the eunuch asked to be baptized, leading them to stop the chariot and go down into the water.
The Spirit's action: Immediately after the baptism, the Holy Spirit "snatched" Philip away, meaning he was suddenly transported elsewhere.

When Christ Was Baptized in the River Jordan, by Elizabeth Wang
Our need to be guided by the Holy Spirit is pivotal [...] It is the Holy Spirit who fixes our gaze on Jesus, who assures us that Jesus' gaze is always upon us, who each day makes wonderfully new our relationship with Jesus.
Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster (in his Foreword to The Church of Mercy: A Vision for the Church)

"Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to follow all that I commanded you; and behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."
Matthew 28:19-20

However careless and indifferent the baptized may be in their subsequent life, this indwelling presence of the Spirit is never totally withdrawn. But unless we co-operate with God's grace -- unless, through the exercise of our free will, we struggle to perform the commandments -- it is likely that the Spirit's presence within us will remain hidden and unconscious. As pilgrims on the Way, then, it is our purpose to advance from the stage where the grace of the Spirit is present and active within us in a hidden way, to the point of conscious awareness, when we know the Spirit is present and active within us in a hidden way, to the point of conscious awareness, when we know the Spirit's power openly, directly, with the full perception of our heart. 'I am come to cast fire on the earth,' Christ said, 'and how I wish it were already kindled!' (Luke 12:49). The Pentecostal spark of the Spirit, existing in each one of us from Baptism, is to be kindled into a living flame. We are to become what we are.
