#Repost from our conservation friends at... @teamsharkwater @download.ins --- Let's go! We are excited to announce that the U.S. Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee has approved the Shark Fin Sales Elimination Act. The legislation which was reintroduced by Sens.Cory Booker and Shelley Moore Capito was passed by the committee with a 24 to 4 vote and will be included in the Endless Frontier Act S. 1260. This is great news for sharks and the oceans as the Shark Fin Sales Elimination Act makes it illegal to buy, sell, possess or move shark fins or any product containing shark fins, except for certain Dogfish fins. Although shark finning is illegal in the U.S. the country does not have a total ban on the shark fin trade and is a major shipping hub for illegal fins. We want to personally thank Sens. @corybooker @capitoforwv @maria.cantwell_ and @senlisamurkowski i, and House reps. @kilili_sablan @congressman_mccaul . And a huge shout out to the shark advocates and shark community. Without all of your support changes like these wouldn’t be made possible. Although this success brings the U.S. one step closer to being fin free, the fight isn’t over yet. We still have to await majority Leader Chuck Schumer to schedule a vote by the full Senate. #stopfinning #bansharkfin #sharkfinban #endthetrade #sharkfinning #sharkfinsoup #sharktrade #sharkfishing #helpsavesharks #stopfinning #nosharkfin #savesharks #finsattached #seachangeagency #sealegacy #discoversharks (at United States) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPVpYNOB3m4/?utm_medium=tumblr

When people talk about shark conservation, it’s often through a broader, sometimes disconnecting lens. We can raise awareness all we want but the fact is, we need to bring the conversation closer to home rather than continue to give speeches on shark finning in the far off waters of Asia. The truth is, the issue of shark conservation is so much closer to us than we realize.
Shark fin soup is not just something that is unique to Asian countries. Shark finning has been banned in the United States, but is still on the menus and available for consumption in 12 states (Fobar, 2019) Lax laws and a lack of proper implementation of pre existing laws lend themselves to shark numbers dwindling dangerously in the West as well.
This was a super short post but in the next few posts I’m going to go back and talk about how long sharak have been around, what other dangers they face, and specific policy changes that could be made. In the meantime, here is a link to a few petitions about preventing the killing and finning of sharks right here in America.

#Repost @timothymurray5224 (@get_repost) ・・・ Sharks only kill about 16 people each year. Meanwhile, humans kill about 100 MILLION sharks every year. Which one should really be feared? 🤔 💭🦈 PS If you’ve never seen the documentary by Rob Stewart, I *highly* recommend it. #reposted_from @neptunic_com This beautiful sharks name is Zola, the name Zola is of African origin meaning “piece of earth.” Which is beautifully symbolic when we consider how sharks are such important pieces of earth.. It’s also neat, that two of our newest squad members are sailing the Caribbean on a boat named Zola❤️🦈 . . . We possess the ability to recognize when something isn’t right and actually negatively impacts us (and our world). As a result, we can choose to stand up against it. Consider this: Shark finning is proven to be a detrimental practice that has grave impacts upon the oceanic ecosystem; something we rely on for our survival. Some traditions are not meant to last. We grow, we change, and we learn from our mistakes. Please do your best to avoid supporting the shark fin trade. Not just for my sake - but for the sake of our future. If you haven’t yet, feel free to Google one thing: “How many sharks are killed each year?” #themoreyouknow #stopsharkfinning #bansharkfinning #bansharkfinsoup #sharkfin #sharkfinning #sharkfinsoup #stoptheslaughter #nobluenogreen #conservation #sharkconservation #oceanlife #blueplanet #saveourplanet #sharkweek #sharklife #jaws #sharklove #lovesharks #sharksneedlove #protectourplanet #sharksavers #savesharks

I saw this video for the first time yesterday and the message was so powerful, I almost cried. It really is true if we could see where our food came from as it was being served to us, we would view our eating habits differently. In this video, shark fin soup is the main focus. A social status item that is harmful to our health but people still eat it around the globe. Sharks have evolved for 450 million years not to end up as a bowl of soup. Our oceans are being depleted of its “white blood cells” for our entertainment. Without sharks, our oceans ecosystems will crash. We are already seeing that crash in the pacific ocean while sea lions are overpopulating and salmon and steelhead are disappearing. #helpsavesharks #savesharks #savetheocean #bansharkfinning #bansharkfinsoup #bansharkproducts #bansqualane #ourchoicesdetermineourfuture #govegan🌱 video courtesy of WildAid

#Repost from @sharktopia with @ming.app . 🔥 We NEED sharks alive and thriving if we want to ensure our own future. 70% of our oxygen comes from HEALTHY Oceans...and in order to remain healthy, sharks are a vital and irreplaceable key component! Despite how much we need them alive, more than 100 MILLION sharks are slaughtered every single year. We are witnessing ‘the end’ grow nearer every single day. It’s not a time to tone down the dramatic vibe. It’s time to yell louder, call for action, seriously nix the excuses, stop using single-use plastics, and do whatever we can to protect ALL sharks. Every moment counts. 🦈❤️🦈 #sharkfinning #sharkfinsoup #endsharkfinning #jaws #notamonster #savesharks #sharkconservation #sharkweek #bansharkfinning #bansharkfinsoup https://www.instagram.com/p/B6x62ydhvMe/?igshid=suuyvwbyl0qn

The investigation obtained documentary evidence of fins from endangered shark species being openly offered for sale by over half of all shark fin traders surveyed in Taiwan’s southern fishing port of Kaohsiung. Of the 13 shark fin processing and trading companies visited, more than half were found to be trading CITES- listed fins, and seven had shark fins from CITES Appendix II-listed species as part of their product range. One company said "there was no difference in selling protected or unprotected species. Protected sharks’ products usually create a problem for international shipping only.” Check out our blog post for further information and to download the full report - 𝙇𝙞𝙣𝙠 𝙞𝙣 𝙗𝙞𝙤 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙞𝙣 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨 𝗦𝗛𝗔𝗥𝗞 𝗚𝗨𝗔𝗥𝗗𝗜𝗔𝗡 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. What You Can Do For Sharks: A Guide for the Average Landlocked American
Quite a lot! Even if you don’t live by the sea, there is so much you can do to help protect sharks and in doing so, protect the oceans too! Here is my super helpful masterlist of things you can do to help theses amazing animals.
Stop providing a market for cosmetics that use shark based products. Tell your friends about it, and make sure to inquire if a product is ethically sourced.
This is so obvious, but use as little plastic as possible. A nemesis of many ocean animals, plastic waste is also a bog contributing factor to reducing shark numbers. Sometimes sharks directly consume plastic while mistaking it for food but, more often than not, sharks eat other other animals that have ingested plastic. Like turtles!
EDUCATE. Both yourself and others. Having a solid understanding of sharks and their role in the ecosystem is integral to further spreading awareness.

Reposted from @blueoceanaction - Reposted from @oneoceandiving - Afraid of ending up as shark dinner? Don’t be! It’s more likely for sharks to end up as human dinner! Shark fin soup is an expensive delicacy that is eaten in China as well as some Chinese restaurants in America. It can cost anywhere from $300 to $2,000, and all for a bowl of soup! Eating sharks has no nutritional value, and in fact it has been found that humans are at risk of acquiring the neurotoxin BMAA (Holtcamp 2012). This is a compound normally produced by cyanobacteria, and apex predators (like sharks) tend to have high concentrations of this because they eat so much including other predators with high concentrations of BMAA (Holtcamp 2012). It is estimated that 1.4 million tons, or around 100 million individual sharks are killed per year for shark finning (Worm et al. 2013). The practice itself is extremely wasteful and inhumane: illegal fisheries have been found to use sea lion flesh to bait the sharks, and once caught the fins are cut and the shark is discarded to either bleed out or suffocate (Schiller et al. 2015). These amazing animals deserve so much better! #speakupforsharks and #bansharkfinning !! #oneocean #oneoceandiving #oneoceanresearch #helpsavesharks Post by: @kaytiegracie Photo by: @paulhiltonphoto Want to learn more?
