The investigation obtained documentary evidence of fins from endangered shark species being openly offered for sale by over half of all shark fin traders surveyed in Taiwan’s southern fishing port of Kaohsiung. Of the 13 shark fin processing and trading companies visited, more than half were found to be trading CITES- listed fins, and seven had shark fins from CITES Appendix II-listed species as part of their product range. One company said "there was no difference in selling protected or unprotected species. "Through technology, we are creating seafood that doesn't have to be harvested from this highly vulnerable ecosystem and that is created entirely in our food laboratories. We get inspired by mother nature and recreate what people have been eating for centuries, in a better and more sustainable way," New Wave spokesperson Florian Radke tells Discovery via email The company is also developing a sustainable shrimp product using similar plant-based ingredients. Poorly managed shrimp fisheries can be detrimental to marine ecosystems; shrimp trawling operations often net high levels of non-target species. Much of that bycatch isn't removed from the trawling net until it's too late, and millions of pounds of dead or dying marine animals are simply thrown back into the ocean. "Over the past few decades, global production of shrimp has more than tripled, and it's estimated we now eat more than 6 million tons of them each year," Radke adds. "The Natural Resources Defense Council estimates that for every 1,000 people who stop eating [conventional] shrimp, we can save more than 5.4 tons of sea life per year." The shrimp product will be available early next year; a release date has not yet been announced for the shark fin product. Here's a short list of some of them that I Experience while enjoying their company! Awe-Inspiring, life-changing, love, humbled, magnificent, incredible, beautiful, powerful and of course very lucky! It saddens me greatly that we still have movie producers and camera men, that take the money and portray them as mindless man-eating monsters while we eradicate these magnificent creatures into extinction! Some even say how much they love sharks! It's time to tell the truth about sharks if we are to save them!! To me these films are nothing more than tabloid journalism of untruths at best! For decades I've made my life's mission to educate people about the true nature of sharks with shark trips, books, films, social networks and presentations! I was very fortunate to be able to grow up swimming with Tigers, Great Hammerheads, Bulls, Oceanic White Tips, Lemons and many more! Discovering the affectionate side of sharks in 2002 was a huge game-changer for me! In incredibly thankful to all who repost and share my content, helping me show the true nature of these magnificent creatures! I can't wait to see Great White Sharks again this September 15, 2021!
