Just got back from work but must sketch idiot scenes
Shinichi: Haibara, do you have a crush?
Shiho: … I do.
Shinichi: But you’re still single?
Shiho: Yes.
Shinichi: Damn. Maybe you’re bad at flirting?
Shiho: I’m not bad at flirting, the person I have a crush on is an idiot.
Shinichi: Ugh, that sucks, I’m sorry.
Shiho: *blank stare*
Shinichi: Why are you looking at me like that?

Fireworks (ShinRan comfort)
This idea has been nagging me these days and demanded itself be written, or else. You'll see I'm craving some major ShinRan comfort... Please, Aoyama, be gentle with our hearts, whenever Shinichi comes back! Also, this was majorly inspired by Clean Bandit's "Everything but you" song, and put on repeat while writing this! That song just feels ShinRan all the way!
Read on AO3 if you prefer!
----
"Can I sit here?"
Ran felt her heart skip a beat when hearing his voice. To find Shinichi on the same bus pointing to the empty seat next to hers had been the last thought on her mind. She even took her hand to her heart hoping it would calm down, which, truth be told, had been a rather difficult task these last few weeks...
"Shinichi! Mou, don't scare me like that!" she reprimanded with a little smile, happy to see him.
"Sorry, sorry! You were focused, my bad!" he laughed while sitting next to her. He sat rather close, their shoulders touching, but otherwise, he let himself slouch on the seat as if he was tired.
"Whatcha reading?" he asked after a minute of content silence, looking over her shoulder at her phone's screen.
"Another piece of news of the Syndicate downfall... They are saying you went abroad to USA and Singapur and just returned last month," she responded.
"Well, close enough..."
He sighed. He didn't know where these reporters got their crazy ideas, but he was surprised that they were still willing to discuss the Syndicate's bust after a whole month had gone by and it had already been discussed by everyone in the whole wide world. He understood that some people still had questions and wanted answers -since he had never disclosed the whole truth of the matter-, but he needed to close the chapter and go back to the life of Kudo Shinichi, a 17-years-old, extraordinary ordinary tantei-san.
"And you? How come you hopped on this bus?", Ran interrupted his train of thought, putting away her phone when she finished reading the article.
"I was going back home. I was just at the Metropolitan Police headquarters. Megure-keibu asked me to go over some notes on them and so on..." Shinichi said, avoiding her quizzical gaze.
"Business as usual?" she chuckled, amused.
"Business as usual indeed..." he sighed again.
Although they had been separated by an invisible wall for nearly a year, Ran still considered herself an expert on the expressions of Kudo Shinichi. He seemed sad, but inside was a forlornness that was eating at him. He sometimes laughed, sometimes for her sake, sometimes for the sake of others, but he was not okay yet. He was on his way, and had progressed so much in this last month... She was more than willing to help him get back on his feet. He was a strong one, her baka tantei-san.
"Ne..." she began, hoping that he opened himself to those feelings.
"Hey!" he interrupted, pointing to the window. "There are fireworks at that temple! Do you want to see them?"
"Oh?" she looked outside where he was pointing, watching a beautiful display of colours in the sky "Yes!"
Shinichi left his seat and pressed the stop button, while Ran collected her karate gi and joined him at the door. At the next stop, the couple went down and retraced their steps to get to the temple, until they found a balcony where they could easily see the fireworks without straining their necks too much.
It was indeed beautiful, and peaceful. Just being able to be there, with Ran by his side, feeling her warmth... Sometimes it seemed surreal, after everything that he had endured to return to his body. After all the lies, the tears and the hardships. And she was still there, with him, having forgiven for everything he put her through. His Conan days had been a nightmare, and sometimes it felt like it had been a dream he was desperate to wake up from, but other times it felt real, palpable. Nonetheless, in the dark of the night, he felt thankful for the life lesson.
"Ne, Shinichi..." Ran started, glancing at him from the corner of her eye. "How do you feel?"
"About what?" he asked, even though he was sure what she was referring to.
"About everything... It mustn't be easy..." Ran responded, trailing off. Although she needed to hear the answer to appease her heart, she would let it go if he was not ready to answer yet.
He sighed. He knew Ran was bound to ask the question sooner or later, and she, more than anyone else, deserved an honest answer. He braced himself; he had never been good at opening his heart. But it was necessary, for him, for herself, for their blooming relationship. He owed that much to her.
"No," he began, grasping for the correct words while looking ahead at the fireworks. "It isn't. I'm... coping, I think is the word I want to use. Just one month ago we faced them... We both were injured, Hattori nearly doesn't make it out, and the FBI, and Haibara, and Vermouth..." He glanced at her for a moment, but returned his gaze to the fireworks display the next second. "It's constantly on my mind, how much everyone has sacrificed to end them, and I'll be forever grateful that I could return to my body in the end. I never lost hope, but seeing you cry and everyone worrying... I was terrified that they could do something to you or anyone..."
Ran's heart shattered while listening to him. She reached for his hand on the railing, squeezing it, while he smiled sadly. She knew he was grateful for the human contact, although he didn't express it, and it still took everything in himself to initiate contact, even when he needed it the most. She had always been the braver between the two.
"It must've been overwhelming, bearing such a heavy burden on just your shoulders...", she murmured, squeezing his hand again while looking through him into his soul.
"But they weren't just mine..." he interrupted, abruptly, refusing to look at her. "Everyone was involved, one way or another."
"I'm sorry," Ran said, returning her gaze to the fireworks. "I wish I could've done something more to help..."
The ghost of a smile touched his lips, and he allowed himself to look at her. It was just like her to give her everything and not hold back. Stubborn and sensitive. He drank in her pained expression and saw it morph into a more peaceful one while the display of colours in the sky illuminated her eyes, wondering if her tears were just on the way. He hoped she didn't feel the need to cry, but 13 years ago he had told her she could cry whenever she felt like it, so...
"Barou. You helped more than you know."
Indeed, a lone tear escaped her right eye at his words, but he wiped it away with tender fingers as soon as it touched her face. She was as beautiful as ever. He met her halfway, kissing her with all the tenderness and love he could muster. It was wonderfully sweet to be able to be there, with her, in that way. It reminded him of another special moment, in Kyoto, where his time was up and he hadn't been able to kiss her. He regretted having left her then, but it had been necessary to lead them right here and now. He embraced her tighter by the waist, while her hands found the back of his neck. When they opened their eyes, millimetres separating their lips, with only the sounds of the fireworks for company, he felt his eyes sting too. He touched her forehead with his to compose himself.
She sighed contently and let go of his neck, situating herself in front of him, taking his arms around her waist and putting her hands above his. She leant on his shoulder, touching her forehead with his cheek and closed her eyes, focusing on his steady heartbeat and thanking Kamisama for helping him return to her. He kissed her temple and armed himself with the courage to confess something he should have told her since he had come back.
"You were there to keep me sane," she smiled, feeling his heart rate pick up. "I love you".
It didn't happen often, that those words left his mouth. She didn't think it was possible to love him more than she already did, but every once in a while, with little gestures, he pulled the rug from under her feet.
"I'll be here," she responded, her eyes still closed and concentrating on feeling him, his needs, his mind, his heart. She knew he knew she loved him, but he may not know that she would continue to be there for him as long as he let her. Without words, he seemed to have understood.
"I just need to let go of everything..."
The words died in his mouth, but he trusted that she knew his soul inside and out. Indeed, just as he had understood before, Ran understood him all the same.
"You will," she promised.
"I'll pull through."
"You will."
"We'll be fine."
"We will."
Shinichi only pulled her closer, waiting for the fireworks display to reach its end. When it did, he never let go of her hand.
"Let me take you home."
She let him.
I just wanna let go of everything but you…
---
My, this just wrote itself! I hope you liked it! It felt good to write after 5 years... Perhaps I'm healing too and I could get back to Run... We'll see! Thanks for reading!

Prompt - Double trouble
So this is for you @gingerwitchhh, hope you like it. But honestly, I didn't run it to my beta yet (she's still busy with the new chapter of the Sherlock-Conan crossover), and the prompts (which are still open) are more to get me back to writing. Right now, it still feels like I dont know what I'm doing, which is even more frustrating since I should know how to write, yeah but - whatever, hope you'll still like it. Next one will be a glimpse into what happened after "Lost in time" since it was also a prompt (even though it seemed to be gone).
See you next time around :)
----------------------------------------------------------
Double – trouble
“Honestly, I thought our first double date would be a little more… romantic, Heiji.” Kazuha complained, before reaching for Ran's arm, in order to pull her closer for her argument.
“I am sure Ran-san and Kudo-kun would rather see a movie or somethin’ like that! It’s their first well… real meeting with us after all.”
“No offense Kudo-kun” She fussed, but didn’t see the weak smile on the detective's face, while he could clearly see that Ran herself looked rather unwell, being drawn in their argument.
“Actually, Kazuah I piked tha heist because these two are accompanying us.” Heiji clarified proudly when they entered the building.
“After all, “No one get’s hurt” on a Kid heist – So no body’s dropping today for this Tokyo murder magnet.” He grinned, ignoring the girl’s surprised looks as well as the annoyed groan of his friend.
“Oi! Hattori –“
But Shinichi’s protest was drowned by someone calling his fellow detective by the name.
“Hey, Hattori-kun!”
“Ah Nakamori-san, nice ta finally meet ya!” Heiji greeted the young woman, who made her way towards them. Shinichi raised his eyebrows at the familiar name, he knew Heiji had pulled some strings to get them here, but what surprised him wasn't the fact that the two children of police officers seemed to know each other, but the fact that the girl in front of them looked quite similar to Ran.
“I’m glad you could make it! I’m sure you’ll be quite helpful, catching this fealty thief.” She smiled.
“Oi Aho-ko, who are you talking to?“
“Ah Kaito! If you allow me to introduce you to Heiji Hattori, the son of the chief of the Osakan police department and his friends, this is my fried Kaito Kuroba, also my classmate and some crazy wanna be magician and fan of Kid." She sneered in annoyance.
"So just ignore him during – what the?!” She stopped herself, looking from her childhood fried to the guy accompanying Hattori and back.
“WHY are there two of ya!” The detective of the east yelled, before she had the chance to do so.
“Baka-ito I swear if that’s one of your jokes!” Aoko hissed, turning back to her classmate.
“What! No I-“ But even before he had the chance to defend himself a roar of laughter interrupted him, coming from the last person you would have expected, Kudo Shinichi himself.
“Oi Kudo?” Heiji hissed, trying to calm him down, but his friend didn't- or rather couldn’t answer since he couldn't stop his laughter.
“I- I guess the guy just needs some fresh air.” Kaito flustered, taking Shinichi by the shoulders in order to guide him around the next corner.
“I – We’ll be back soon, don't worry about us.”
“Seriously Tantei-san?” The thief growled in annoyance, looking down at the detective who was still bending over from laughter, once they were out of earshot.
Shinichi took a shaking breath, still trying not to burst out laughing again.
Honestly, a room full of police officers, a magician named Kaito – and no one questioned his presence? The detective shook his head.
“So your name is really Kaito, and no one ever figured out that you’re actually Kaitou Kid?”
The high schooler in front of him just raised an eyebrow, crossing his arms in front of his chest.
“Well, no. Seems like my disguise is just as good as your fake glasses have been, brat.” Kaito growled and was satisfied to see his lookalike flinch at the remark.
“At least they never had enough proof to arrest me for good.” He mused.
“So you don't deny it?”
“Huh?” The sudden serious tone of the detective had ripped him from his thought.
“You being Kaito Kid?” Kudo’s blue eyes were piecing his own, before a sly smile appeared on his lips.
“Can’t, right detective? Not after everything that had happened between us.” He smirked, his whole manner had changed from Kaito to Kid within seconds, so that the detective took a step back, slightly flustered.
“That’s not what –“
“Oh relax already will you – honestly you detectives are no fun.” Kaito grumbled, already back to his “usual” self. The sudden change left Shinichi perplex, he knew that changing from one persona to another wasn't that hard when you're used to it, but that didn’t mean it freaked him out any less. The magician – or rather thief – on the other hand, seemed to be much more disturbed by his silence, since he struggled to continue their conversation.
“Besides, it’s not like there are more people with our face running around, are they?“
‘You’d be surprised…’ Shinichi mused.
“So, what are you going to do about it?”
This time it was Shinichi who was surprised by the serious tone of the thief. He was leaning against the wall, arms crossed in front his chest, casually waiting for a reply. Shinichi frowned, despite all this he could clearly see the tension in the magicians shoulders, as well as his gaze which lingered on the hallway behind him, probably planning for the best way to escape.
Kaito was surprised to see a smile appearing on the detective's lips, Kudo had closed his eyes, hiding his hands in his pockets, before he looked up again, still smiling.
“Not much I guess…” He answered with a shrug. But the thief still wouldn't let it drop so easily.
“Awe, you’re still scared I could spill your little secret? Conan Edogawa…” Shinichi tensed at the name, but only for a brief moment, before he rolled his eyes at the not so hidden blackmail in the other high schoolers word.
“Maybe, but beside…” He mused, before a dangerous grin appeared on his lips.
“… where would be the fun in catching Kaito Kuroba, when I’m here for Kid.”
Kaito was taken aback by the detectives' statement for a second, before his lips mirrored his smile.
“Huh, guess you are different after all… Tantei-kun.”
The tension in his shoulders vanished, when he saw that the detective was serious about it, guess he should have known that Kudo would react different from what he was used to.
‘Especially compared to some British nerd, trying to catch me during our Japanese lesson.’ The thief groaned at the thought.
“You shouldn't start celebrating just jet through.” Shinichi warned his look alike, in a serious tone.
“Huh?” Kaito looked up from his thoughts in surprise.
“Well, on the one hand – I’ll still catch you, and on the other…” The detective smirked, pointing over his shoulder.
“… Ran it still waiting out there.”
“What?!”
Kaito followed the hint, bending slightly to the side in order to look around the corner they were hiding behind. It seemed like the three girls were having a great time, while Hattori gave him a sour stare, but once Kudo’s girlfriend saw him, her whole manner changed in an instant. He twitched when he saw her hand forming a first, he very well remembered that the girl could turn solid stone to powder with just one punch.
“I guess she still has a bone to pick with you, after you’ve been playing Dress up ever so often.” The detective added with a smirk, as he saw Kaito slowly losing the color on his face.
“Not to mention Hattori as well-once he’ll figure it out.”
“B-But- I’m sure she wouldn’t, I mean she –“ Kaito stammered
But the detective just laughed at his lack to form a useful sentence, instead he turned around to leave him to his agonizing thoughts.
“Well good luck with that Kaito.” Shinichi mocked.
“I’ll catch you later”
He waved, not looking back, while he made his way back to their small group.
“Oh fuck you, you little –“ The thief growled, as he went after the detective but stopped when Mori’s deadly glance found him once more.
‘Jeez- I’m as good as dead.’
----------------------------------------------------------
Honestly, I wanted to end the shot with a brief flash to a scene after the heist, where Kaito finds a message from Shinichi offering help with the organization – but since that would just leave an open ending, and kind of bittersweet stuff (on Kids side) I skipped it, for one simply happy little shot – after such a long time with no writing at all.

Hello, I’m glad we could make you happy with this. Actually, the next chapter will be released soon. It only needs to be proofread. It is one of my all time favorites too and if you really love it, you should try reading the novels too. The story is longer than the anime or the manga and it’s available in English online. I think the 10th or 11th volume is not yet translated but we might work on that in the future too. Oh, and I love this kind of long message. :) Thank you

Breaking Nightmare’s Grip
Detective Conan/Magic Kaito: Kuroba Kaito, Hakuba Saguru Blurb: Struggling to come to grips with how his heist with Nightmare ended, Kaito ends up finding comfort from an unexpected source. (Takes place after the Dark Knight episode.) Fic Type: Hurt/Comfort Overall Fic Warnings: Death Talk, Minor Character Death mention.
Ao3 Link FF.Net Link
His hand was cold. Had been cold since Jack Connery had slipped from his grip, taking KID’s white glove with him as he plummeted to the floor below.
Let them go! Let the jewels go and grab my arm with both hands!
I can’t! This is Kenta’s--Kenta’s surgery.
Kaito flinched, trying and failing to get Connery’s face out of his mind as he slid to the ground outside his bedroom door, pressing his back against the wall as he buried his head into his knees, the mask he’d been desperately trying to hold onto cracking as the weight of it all became too much to bear. Breath hitching, Kaito made no attempt to stop the hot wet trails that streaked down his cheeks.
“Why?” He whispered into the darkness, his voice cracking.
Why.
Why hadn’t Nightmare let go of those black opals and grabbed his arm? If he had he wouldn’t---wouldn’t be--
Kaito grimaced, trying and failing to no longer see Connery’s body falling away from his outstretched hand.
Yet, he couldn’t stop replaying the moment. His mind desperately churning through various options, trying to find a way where it could have ended differently. Where KID could have saved Nightmare. Saved Kenta from having to now live without his father in his life.
Kaito drew in another shuddering breath, his right hand spasming from the cold, from the phantom feeling of Connery’s fingers slipping out of his.
There should have been something KID could have done differently.
But no matter what he’d planned, how many possibilities he’d prepared for. He hadn’t expected Nightmare to end up...dead.
He shuddered, curling up tighter into a ball.
With how many times he’d had run ins with his favorite detectives on their cases where people ended up dead, he should be--well not reacting like this. He’d seen dead bodies before. Even talked to the victims before they--died.
He sh-shouldn’t be--
Kaito swallowed, struggling to get air into his burning lungs as his hand only seemed to grow colder.
He hadn’t watched the life vanish from those people though. Hadn’t seen their last breaths. Hadn’t tried to sa--save---
The baka.
He could have lived.
If Connery had only let go of those stupid gems. If only he had thought more about saving his own life rather than--
Warmth.
Kaito jerked, head shooting up as someone’s hand took his own in a firm yet comforting grip.
He blinked, breath catching in his throat at the shadowy silhouette crouched down in front of him.
A silhouette he recognized despite his blurry vision.
A silhouette that shouldn’t be here, in his house.
“Ha-Hakuba?!” He asked, internally wincing as his voice again cracked.
Kaito had no reason to be upset right now. Kaito shouldn’t be--be---mourning anyone’s death yet because Kaito has no idea what has happened and now Hakuba was here which meant there had to be some clue that lead Hakuba to him and now the Detective was--
“Shh.” Hakuba squeezed Kaito’s hand between both of his own. “Breathe, Kuroba-kun. I believe you may be going into shock.”
Shock. Him? Go into shock? Ha. “Y-you sho-shouldn’t--be-be-”
“Here?”
Kaito jerked his head in a nod, using his free hand to wipe his cheeks as he caught a glimpse of a smile in the faint light coming from the window. The Detective exhaled, shrugging a shoulder. “I’m only here as a…” His fingers twitched against Kaito’s. “As a concerned….friend. Nothing more, Kuroba-kun. So put that particular...worry away from you.”
That was like telling a bird not to fly. A fish not to swim. A detective to not solve a crime scene.
And as a friend? Kaito scoffed, fighting to draw the torn pieces of his mask back on. They were hardly friends. “W-worry?” He asked, conscious of how he should be freeing his hand from Hakuba’s grip. Only...it was warm. Warmer than the frozen empty void that had been present there since Connery’s hand had left his.
Don’t THINK about THAT!
“Ov--Over--??” He drew in a deeper breath, rapidly blinking as he fought to keep eye contact with the Detective. “Why should I be-be worried? Be--because you...bro--broke into my house?”
He was certain everything had been locked. After all, Kaito had entered from the skylight on the roof after discarding his KID outfit. He doubted the Detective would have taken that route.
Hakuba shifted, giving a slight bow with his head. “My apologies for the intrusion.” He said, simply. Formal as always. “As I said before…I was concerned.”
Concerned enough to act more like a thief than a detective apparently.
Kaito brushed at his burning eyes, taking a more steady breath. Despite the reason...he was grateful to have someone else here. “Why?”
Hakuba exhaled. “May I sit?” He asked, not waiting for Kaito’s response before he settled down next to him, hand never leaving his as he leaned against the wall.
“I didn’t say yes.” Kaito muttered as the detective made himself comfortable.
“I came...because seeing death is never an easy thing.” Hakuba said just as softly. “Especially when the life of another is extinguished right in front of you.”
“Me?”
“The general usage of you, Kuroba-kun. I am not here to insinuate any potential connections to a certain thief and his activities tonight..”
Kaito rolled his eyes, hand trembling in Hakuba’s. He didn’t WANT to think about it. Think about how he’d failed. “I think you just did, Hakubaka.”
“Apologies. Regardless.” He adjusted his grip on Kaito’s. “Tonight the others involved have found sources of comfort. I couldn’t help but feel...that since this---death can’t really be talked about due to certain implications. A certain individual would have no one to go to.”
That was true. With his mother who knew where, Aoko in the dark about his identity as KID and Jii still on vacation in France….he had no one.
“And in this case...while I am probably not the best source to keep you company due to our...antagonistic history in school and my position as...a detective going after KID...I felt, regardless, that my presence may be of some help to you, even if it is a negative reaction. I felt it would be unwise for yo--ah...well...unwise to be left alone when...when...ah...KID isn’t often exposed to the--darker side of breaking the law, especially when it’s obvious KID tried to prevent--
Kaito tilted his head, studying Hakuba as the detective blabbered on. Nerves? Possibly. This was--well semi out of character for tantei-san. Phone calls before heists were one thing, but having him physically come here to...help?
The detective was right in one aspect though.
Kaito really didn’t want to be alone right now.
He exhaled. Dropping his head back to his knees. If this was a truce. He wasn’t of a mind to break it. Even if this was blurring the line between his ability to deny being KID a bit too much for his liking.
“Baro, stop talking. It’s fine.” He said interrupting Hakuba as he squeezed his hand tightly. As tight as when he’d been trying to--to save Connery’s life.
He needed something..someone to keep his hand from feeling the cool void that Nightmare’s presence had left, to keep his thoughts distracted from what had occurred earlier tonight. Even if that someone was Hakubaka.
Kaito would figure out how to explain this...this break down later. Figure out just how the detective had entered his home. For now though… He took a breath, keeping his voice low as he felt Hakuba relax. “Thanks for coming.”

Under-appreciated light novels recommendation list, ranked in terms of PLEASE READ, to ehh, I’ll just put it in anyway:
Legend of Sun Knight (Completed Translation+Series): Set in a world of knights and magic, this series is golden comedy because the MC literally carries the plot. He’s smart, snarky and sleazy… but in a good way. I wrote about it here, but this series is for people who love comedy and political-castle-intrigue-level manipulation. ANYWAY PLEASE READ IT IT’S UP THERE ON MY TOP TEN BOOKS TO READ. No anime or manga translation. WHY.
Rakuin no Monshou (Completed Translation): For people who love the switching-the-royal-prince-with-a-body-double trope, political manoeuvring, military tactics, having the main character travel to different countries and exploring their governing system, and major character growth. No ecchi scenes, mentions of sex and rape (if any) are not elaborated on. Love between the MC and the female lead is more of a stranger to mutual respect to love, but since the female lead is literally 14-15 (they’re engaged to foster peace between two countries and not some lolicon thing), there are literally 0 sexy/blushy blushy/kissing/intimacy scenes between them. In the story their relationship feels less like a lovey dovey couple and more like the relationship between two generals that trust each other. This doesn’t have an anime or manga series after it. Why.
Only Sense Online (Ongoing Translation, Ongoing Series): Unlike the recent isekai and trapped-in-an-online-game-and-if-you-die-in-the-game-you-die-for-realsies trends that are going around right now, this is just a game where the MC has fun playing a normal VRMMO and makes new friends in it. …In fact, the MC isn’t an otaku or a game maniac, his sister and childhood friend are the ones crazy about levelling up and doing all the main subjugation-monster quests and everything, he’s more of the chill type who’d rather hang back and craft stuff to sell in his shop. He likes doing things at his own pace and learning how to craft new things in his own time. Instead of battling monsters and levelling up, he’s more likely to be seen harvesting items and mining rocks. Oh, and also at the start of the game he mis-clicked and is stuck in a female avatar, and combined with his mothering, take-care-of-everyone personality, everyone treats him like like a ‘nanny’ and is in awe of his ‘moe-ness’, even though he keeps insisting he’s a guy. One of the story’s underlying message is that different people have different ways of enjoying the same game, be it doing quests in a party, creating items to support players, roleplaying, and even PKing, and that’s okay because that’s what a game is for. No angst or permanent character deaths (it is a game after all), tis for warming your heart with the sheer sunny goodness that is the MC. No ecchi. Has an ongoing manga series, but no anime.
Hidan no Aria (Ongoing Translation, Completed Series): MC goes to a 'military’ school that trains students to be armed detectives, or as they say, ‘Butei’ (Busou Tantei). Think mercenaries. Female MC is a OP genius and major tsundere, only out-shadowed by our MC. MC considers himself weak, and because of his genes, his innate OP powers is only triggered when a certain condition is met: aka when he is sexually aroused. (Insert sexy times.) In this mode he doesn’t get flashy superpowers or anything (at least, by the world’s standard) — all it does it accelerate his brain’s thought process, but it gets so OP to the point where can deflect bullets with his own bullets and slice bullets in two with his knife. OP God Mode. This trigger also turns him into a major flirt and gigolo that can’t say no to a girl, which caused him to actively seek to avoid situations where he is in close contact with girls to prevent being triggered. Has a ‘harem’ of girls if you wanna call it that way, but even though the story is halfway translated as of now, it’s obvious he’s fallen for the main female lead. You’d only want to read this story to find out the next BS thing the MC does when he’s triggered, and it can only get higher and higher. Seriously, the moment where he catches a bullet in his teeth (way later in the story) gives you the best feeling ever. To put it in the Female MC’s words: "How about that rating, Kinji? Being classed by the world as a dangerous character who fights non-humans? Tell me how do you like that?” And his words: "–I’m a senior high school student. My grades are slightly below average, and I attend a violent school.”, and his monologue: [At least that was what I want to be. Honestly…] Had a 2011 anime and ongoing manga series, as well as a Yuri spinoff series (as per the usual anime law decreeing that all spinoffs have to have Yuri plot in them, see Soul Eater and Fate Prisma).
Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu (Completed Translation + Series): Idiots doing idiotic things in school. Interesting battle system, with loads of comedy. Loads. Of. Comedy. No ecchi scenes. Had an two-season anime series in 2010 and 2011, and a manga series.
Chrome Shelled Regios (Completed Translation + Series): Main character is OP but gets debuffed at the very start, tries to restart his life as a normal person but realises that his innate talent for fighting doesn’t allow him to. Has many female love interests but at the end MC only chooses one. ‘Magic’ system works a little differently from conventional sources, nearing more to martial arts style, and telekinesis-telepathy combination rather than enchanting-spell type. What else can I say other than the MC controls a weapon made of thousands of infinitely thin and sharp wires that he uses to slice bugs (the main enemy) up with... which is so badass. (Though his main weapon is a sword.) No ecchi scenes. The sideplot about ‘fate’ and the history of the setting gets a little confusing though. This had an anime, but since the director died right before the 2009 anime ended it’s unlikely that a second season will come out. It does have a manga side plot series that is completed and a great accompaniment to the main light novel.
CubexCursedxCurious (Completed Translation + Series): MC lives in a house that is apparently so holy that cursed weapons journey there to get purified and lift their cursed. Oh yeah, and some cursed weapons can turn into people too (Soul Eater style?). Wielding the weapons will obviously give you great power, but it also has serious drawbacks, e.g. A sword cursed to be able to slice through anything, drawback is that their owner will be consumed by bloodlust and is compelled to draw blood with that sword (in other words, the old regular cursed sword rule). MC is of course immune to curses (and so he can wield that sword) because he was born in that holy place. Female lead is originally a torture device made of 32 different torture tools, including Iron Maiden, Guillotine, Pendulum, etc. Literally the first scene is the female lead found naked (since her real form is a mcfreaking cube I would not be surprised) in the MC’s kitchen looking for food to eat so let there be a representative of the subsequent ecchi scenes to be found. The cursed tool system is cool, anyway. MC doesn’t end up with anyone is particular. Plus point: Not all female characters introduced are in love with the male MC. Just three (3) girls. Also, the second light novel doesn’t feature the ‘second’ heroine’s backstory arc like a lot of light novels do... but instead a couple of a girl and a genderfluid character. Cool stuff. Had a 2011 anime and (very behind) manga series.
Other more well known ones:
Mahou Shoujo Ikusei Keikaku (Up to Date Translation, Ongoing Series): Think Battle Royale x Danganronpa x the Mahou Shoujo Trope. Lots of blood and death, so don’t bother if you don’t want to see your favourite character die/put through lots of angst and depression. Each Magical Girl has different superpowers and you’d only want to read it in hopes of seeing your favourite character live to the end/have a cool death scene/have cool action scenes in general. One of the underlying themes was that it’s not a given that powerful people will always win; the strong can be overthrown by the weak (I can think of at least two occasions), a person can win a killing game without any blood on their hands, and the magical government is pretty much corrupt. Had a recent 2016 anime series and a manga series.
Hyouka (Up to Date Translation and Series): Based on Agatha Christie stories, think mysteries but without any actual murder.
And then I’ll throw in a few English books to show that I have good taste in books:
Captive Prince by CS Pacat: Gayyyyy + lots of politics. THE ROMANCE THOUGH.... enemies to tentative friends to hostile ‘ah we’re supposed to be on opposing sides as enemies of each other’s nation’ to lovers YEAAHHHHHHH. Some parts are explicit, yeah.
In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan: MC was dragged into a magical military academy in a magical land to be a child soldier, but instead of being typical Harry Potter he is snarky, sarcastic and actually raises valid questions like why the heck are they raising child soldiers??? Bisexual icon male MC who is also a pacifist I love him he must be protected
Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein: War story narrated by a spy who was caught by enemy soldiers and forced to reveal her state secrets in the form of written narrative. Mystery and unreliable narrator time! If you can survive the first few draggy chapters and then a little more the reveal is SO. REWARDING. Female MC.
Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett: I tried recommending this to my friend and sadly I realised that if you have no background knowledge on Christianity and what the apocalypse details you may not find this interesting. It’s a shame because it’s so funny. EDIT: I’m so glad it got a TV series??? That means more people will read the book, which is amazing, right???
The Sherwood Ring by Elizabeth Marie Pope: Female MC and the story of her ancestor’s romances (think short story-style but all connected together). Straight romance. Female MC.
Any book by Brandon Sanderson: Yes. Just… yes.
Summers at Castle Auburn by Sharon Shinn: A bastard girl stays in the castle with her royal relatives for the summer. (If you’re wondering there is discrimination against her as a commoner but overall she is loved by her family there.) Somehow the only page I have bookmarked in this book is the part near the end where the MC commits royal crimes, and is slapped by the king, giving the reader no small amount of satisfaction. Fantasy-style with small amount of political intrigue, female MC is a apprentice hedgewitch so she knows herbal knowledge (which is a prominent part of the book when she uses it?). Anyway, please read.
A Posse of Princesses by Sherwood Smith: Female princess MC is invited to a large one week (?) party with the other country’s princes and princesses to celebrate this big county’s prince’s great birthday or smth. Some political intrigue and also great plot twist. At the end of it I got really invested in the romance between the side characters bc they were really well developed lol..
The Queen’s Thief Series by Megan Whalen Turner: The third book is my favourite book because I love the MC (Costis!!!!!), bless his innocent soul (COSTIS!!!!!!) caught up in the nefarious plots of the first book MC. Little romance and more of political plots.
Warriors by Erin Hunter: I had to include at least one joke book and this was it. Anyway this was the series I grew up reading, honestly the third series had the best MC in the blind, grumpy, no-nonsense healer who is so refreshingly different from a normal ‘hero archetype’ MC. (*whisper* You gotta talk about the furries, troof!) Oh. Oh yeah, they’re all cats.
#troofless stuff#living trooflessly#I just finished reading Rakuin no Monshou and it ended satisfactorily#troofless reads books
