2/13 | 𝐏𝐇𝐘𝐒𝐈𝐂𝐀𝐋 | 𝐀𝐋𝐓𝐀𝐑𝐒 𝐈𝐍 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐊𝐘
@sipofsnips
The fruit was unlike anything she’d ever tasted—red, sweet, alien fruit. Pulling it away she stared into it. It had no seed. None she could see at least, the fiberous, gooey insides wrapped around a hollow nest of deep red. Her middle finger traced the spot where it should be, scared for the smallest instant that she’d just taken it into her mouth without knowing and swallowed it whole.
Bahro chuckled. “There’s no seed.” She looked at him, still cradling the fruit. “The niedostepny is the seed in all our fruits, so when we pluck it, it leaves a crater.”
It was so strange. She could begin to imagine something so vital to a planet that it grew every plant, every tree, every vegetable and fruit.
“It can grow no other trees then,” she assumed, voice distant. “No other fruits.”
“The niedostepny provides without.”
“Has there ever been a seed?”
“No.”
“Would you plant it if there was?” she asked, genuine, though Bahro cocked a brow at the question. “Would it be sacrilege?”
Her words hung there, unbothered, unquestioned—but the question was there. What would a seed make? What would the niedostepny be when made physical?
A little world building for the planet of Sidereus...

Post-Riven Ideas
Been thinking about what kinds of games I'd like to see from Cyan after Riven's launch in a week. Cyan mentioned at Mysterium that they'd like to make smaller more experimental games in the Myst universe partially to revive the franchise but also to avoid too much financial risk. For instance Firmament had a rough launch and stretched the company thin and many of the devs I spoke to mentioned their frustration with the project and the backlash it received. What was also mentioned to me was Cyan's interest in rekindling the magic of the early Myst games in the same way Star Wars: Andor did recently for Star Wars.
They also mentioned that a smaller more Myst-sized game or even smaller would be much less of a financial risk compared to say a massive sprawling epic like Firmament. Some ideas that were tossed around at Mysterium were: Pre-Fall D'ni Post-Fall D'ni A stylized Myst game A Myst horror game Anything involving new characters and time periods A Myst dating sim (not joking)
Here are some of the ideas I'm interested in:
A game about Veovis and his downfall featuring Anna and Aitrus. Set on K'veer and maybe some small ages. Could be either post-Fall or pre-Fall. It would allow us to explore the whole island and read his journals and explore his personal rooms and inspect his belongings. If set pre-Fall we could interact with him as a character along with Ti'ana and Aitrus and uncover his dark plot right on the eve of the Fall while delving into his not-so-subtle romantic love-triangle with the other main characters. The point is it would allow us to finally explore K'veer in its entirety. Bonus would be also remnants of Gehn's stay on the island if set post-Fall.
A game set on Releeshahn centered around Marrim. This would take place after Revelation but before Uru, roughly sometime in the mid to late 1800s. A new cast of characters with occasional Atrus and Yeesha cameos but ultimately centered around Marrim and her uncovering of the secrets of Releeshahn. Book of Marrim would be the tie-in novel for this game. This might be a bigger project since it would be set on Releeshahn and might require several years of dev time so maybe not the first thing Cyan focuses on after Riven but I know its a story Rand and RAWA had planned for a long while.
Garternay and the Exodus or alternately the origins of the Art. This could be a weird one and possibly unlikely one but it could be a really deep dive into the story of Ri'neref and the founding of D'ni or alternately the origins of the Art and how the bahro were enslaved. Did the bahro create the Art initially? How was the tablet made? Etc. I know Robyn Miller has a whole design document for a TV show pitch he did a few years back that would have focused on Garternay and from what was posted on his site and twitter we can see that Garternay was most-likely a barren scorched age in the final days of its red giant sun. There's a lot we could delve into here. We also know that Gehn's timepiece likely shows the planetary map of Garternay possibly before its sun went red giant, although this is something Gehn was told when gifted the timepiece so it's not 100% verifiable. In any case Garternay could be an interesting left field game to produce but I honestly doubt Cyan would reveal that much. Maybe if Robyn is involved.
D'ni Renaissance era. New D'ni character drama set at the height of D'ni civilization. This could be smaller game set during the height of the era of Kings during the reigns of Rakeri or Kedri or maybe one of the bad kings like Tejara or Ti'amel. I'd like to see another heavy character driven narrative but set in this peak period of D'ni civilization. Maybe the story of an exiled Writers Guild Master who's been framed for murder wanting to reconcile with his best friend who now wants revenge etc. I'd like to see more human stories about people in this universe and their personal and interpersonal struggles a la Myst/Riven/Exile with a clear goal in the game to resolve these issues.
Ok but I do really want a D'ni dating sim where you get to romance Veovis and maybe some other D'ni guild master hotties >:)

Schloss Einstein Rewatch Folge 45 - 47

You ever think about how each successive Myst game is more explicitly anti-colonialist than the last? That the enduring moral question of Atrus’s life is what to do with a legacy of colonialism?
In Myst, we read about vibrant Ages full of people in Atrus’s journals. Then we explore those Ages—now empty, abandoned, stripped of their resources and inhabitants. The tragedy of Myst isn’t just the library full of burned books, it’s the destruction of all those people and their homes. The evidence of colonialism is what turns the player against Sirrus and Achenar.
Then in Riven, we’re thrown into a world currently under the thumb of a colonialist ruler, and the signs of Gehn’s destructive touch are everywhere. His temples and workshops take up most of the real estate on the islands, leaving only one where Riven’s native people can roam freely. The schoolhouse on the lake might seem innocuous, until you realize everything there is written in D’ni—the children are not being taught their native language. And there’s an organized underground anti-colonialist resistance! The oppressed are not helpless victims of circumstance, they fight back! Damn, Riven really is the jewel of the series…
Exile is more individually focused than Riven. Instead of showing the systemic, societal effects of colonialism, we get a deep dive into one man’s experience of it. Narayan’s ghosts haunt the narrative through Savvedro’s messages and paintings—and hats off to Brad Dourif, damn, he threw his whole pussy into that role. I still think about his delivery on “my WIFE, ATRUS! MY TWO BABY GIRLS!” decades after I first heard it. The framing device of Exile, that Savvedro is asking Atrus, why do you get to have a fresh start? Why do you get to walk away from the sins of your fathers (or sons, in this case) when I and the rest of my civilization never can?—it’s a good one. Really ties the narrative together.
And then, Uru—I mean. Where do I start? The game that could very easily have been nothing but fanservice, could have coasted on everybody’s hype for OMG D’NI! THE CAVERN!! THE CLEFT!!! But instead they go hey, you like D’ni right? Hey, heyyyyy you know how D’ni was a sprawling ancient empire? Hey. Hey, hey, do you know. How empires are built? And maintained? And then they use the framing device of the archeological dig to uncover the ugly aspects of D’ni that the D’ni themselves kept hidden. And your job as a player is to explore the beautiful gardens and broad avenues, but also the prisons and the slave quarters, and to repatriate stolen cultural artifacts from the D’ni to the Bahro.
And End of Ages is more or less “all that stuff we said in Uru but again, more” as well as “hey don’t forget that even old, dead, slave-trading empires have modern fanboys, this shit isn’t just ancient history, you can’t escape the past when we live in the world the past built!”
Lotta video games have plots that hinge on some ancient evil being awakened, not as many where the ancient evil is a guy who says “remember when our empire was big and beautiful and powerful? We should romanticize that uncritically.” Good job, Myst.
#myst#riven#myst iii exile#uru ages beyond myst#myst V end of ages#you may notice I did not mention revelation#that’s because if you don’t have anything nice to say then say nothing at all

Picture of Yeesha and Bahro trying to communicate esaelp.
my first thought was that video of the girl describing how to draw a flower, trying to teach two cats who are totally enthralled and patiently sitting in little plastic chairs, and i had to recreate it but with this prompt in mind LOL

Die Perversion des neuen Zeitalters
Manova: »Der 9.

OC in 15 Tag Game
thank you for the tag @spideronthesun
this was so fun to do--especially for Bahro (though I did include dialogue tags/action lines). Altars in the Sky is still unfinished, and Bahro isn't a main character yet, but i adore him. sooooo, without further adieu--15 lines of dialogue that showcase the personality of Bahro Vestre best >:)
“Alone, I cannot win,” Bahro admitted. He pointed his claw blade at Heather’s throat. “But a vestre never enters a war without its pack."
“Whoever you’re talking about,” he reminded her. “She ties us together. She’ll be a part of both of us. Someway, I’ll never be without you.”
“From when he was a toddler.” Bahro grit his teeth. “You and Clairwyn have placed the wellbeing of our empire in the hands of a creature with one foot in the pew and the other in a madhouse.”
He admitted nothing important. “I would be too possessive, wouldn’t I?”
He argued, “She is not our young.” Bahro could feel his anxiety prickling within his chest. Soon, Raivun would intervene. “The Niedostepny will provide if it must.”
“Half a foot further than nearly,” he admitted. “We’re a little closer to almost. But it would be blasphemy to say myself or my saints are the same likes of gods.”
“Because I want you to see more of the snow,” he admitted. “They won’t let you stay on Sidereus much longer. I wanted you to see my home before they make you see worse.”
“I’ve let so many children die,” he whispered against her sternum. “So much blood, Heather... So much blood.”
“I wish I could make you happy here. I don’t think you were meant to be without the sun though.”
“Heather thinks you are good. Even if you are so cruel, and so disquieting. She thinks we’re all good, and I hate it—because I cannot believe her still. I love her. Hours of endless night spent at her side, teaching her about Sidereus, watching her read me like her native language, and I have fallen in love with her.”
“She’s the first thing in milennia that I want for myself. Everything else, I have given up for you, and Lohvy. My faith, my home, my hope, my freedom. All I wanted was Heather.” He laughed. “And I lost her too—because I lose everything. Except for you and Lohvy, but you two could lose me if duty demanded it. Yet I still can’t hate you for anything. You’re my family, and I take your blows like hugs.”
“Down her,” Bahro went on. “In the foot, her leg. Just make sure she can’t make the jump.”
“There’s no power in a name. Not for the divine.”
“I'm not a Saint, Marzanna. Nor am I a priest. The only faith I have left lies in you and Lohvy. You are my guiding light. You are my religion--and you are my sister. For you, I would do anything.”
"Quinn, if you let Kraigyn come back and take her again--I'll fucking kill him. I don't give a shit that you're her Soul Guardian. I will kill Kraigyn, prophet or not."
I'm gonna tag: @xxxtosoxxx @wintherlywords @cowboybrunch @thegrievingyoung and open tag for any and all who have an OC they wanna post about!
