I am so glad the new kdramas are bringing back the specific brand of loser men. You know which brand I'm talking about. The Ahn "min min" Minhyuk brand of loser men and I'm loving it. The "I worship this goddess and I'm so in love with her and I can't believe I get to love her. Oh my gods I love her so much" brand of loser men. And we're being fed so well with lovely runner, love next door, no gain no love, my demon, Cinderella at 2am, Hierarchy, Midnight Romance in Hagwon, doctor slump, Queen of tears, welcome to samdal-ri and even good partner (yes it's one sided but the dedication and yuri's couple too).

We need more fictional loser men who worship women to satiate our eldest independent daughter desires.

DRAMA REVIEW | Light Shop (2024)

I don’t use the word “masterpiece” easily because it’s no easy to create a film or tv show that’s literally perfect but that’s the only way to describe Disney+ kdrama Light Shop.

Actor turned director Kim Hee Won makes a perfect directorial debut with this very human and heartfelt Korean gothic ghost love story.

Light Shop is a masterfully crafted production, every detail full of significance and important to understand the story as it progresses. No character is unimportant, all playing a key role in the lives of each other; and the performances of each actor nuance. Never giving away too much but managing to connect with the audience at the same time.

The technical aspects, such as cinematography, lighting and special effects, are simply some of the best you will ever find in a Korean drama.

This is the kind of kdrama you want to watch without knowing anything beforehand, but you should know the first four episodes are key for the world building and then, it twist and turns in order to take you on one of the most beautifully made rides.

Dear Hye Ri

I decided to watch this series because of the premises: a young man falls in love with the alter-ego of a woman. It seemed like a romcom and I soon learned that this was not a comedy, but a drama. And I'm grateful and happy that this was not a comedy. The treatment of the story would not have worked any other way. I would feel these characters' pain. I smiled when they were happy and felt their pain when they were struggling.

This story takes is back and forth between the past and the present. This technique helps us see the contrast and also understand where they are coming from. These are young, broken people. Eun Ho lost her parents when she was a kid. She lost her younger sister 10 years ago and the man she loved broke up with her 4 years ago.

Hyun Oh was abandoned by his mother, abused by a father who died and taken by a group of women who made money through not so honorable means. His friends and neighbors join in this new unconventional household and finishes his education. He falls in love with Eun Ho but breaks up with her because he feels that he can't ever married.

Joo Yeon lost his beloved older brother in an accident right after his graduation. His mother blamed him for the lose of his brother and since then he hasn't been able to forgive him self either.

In a way, Hye Ri helps these characters find their way and heal.

I liked this story.

See You in My 19th Life (2023)

I unabashedly love this show. The actors, the characters, the way it was shot, the convoluted dramatic plot that seems to bend back on itself, it all works for me. But you have to keep in mind that this is not a romcom: it's a weepy dramedy with big romantic feels.

What worked

This cast is so great. Beautiful people acting out big feelings while telling a good story. The cinematography was excellent, restrained when it needed to be and leaning hard into the fantasy to tell the story in other places. The plot didn't always make logic sense, but the writing was very good at getting across the feelings it wants you to feel.

What Didn't Work

Some of the musical cues bothered me, especially when it tried to play up this big mystery about Kang Min-gi. (Was he a bad guy? Yes. Did he deserve his own sinister background music when he came on screen? No.) Also, there were a few logic breaks that I feel like would have been ironed out if they'd had 16 episodes instead of 12. Finally, I'm not an expert, but people who have read the webtoon it was based on were disappointed with some of the departures from the original story. None of this bothered me, because it had so many high moments.

The Performances

Shin Hye-sun as (19th lifer) Ban Ji-eum. I would die for this character. I would love to see her play a short season of the Korean version of Doctor Who, because she would nail that role. It wasn't just the moments of a beautiful person looking sad about drama, she played the comic parts well, she played the angry parts well, she was downright weird at times in a way that was unsettling, and that totally worked for this character. I now have to go back and see everything this actor has been in before now.

Ahn Bo-hyun as (sad rich boi) Moon Seo-ha. This actor was also really good. He had to play it straight and stoic through much of the series, and that could come across as wooden in some scenes, but then they would let him loose in a scene and it was amazing to watch. His chemistry with Shin Hye-sun was so good, as well.

Ha Yoon-kyung as (spring sunshine) Yoon Cho-won. I loved her in Extraordinary Attorney Woo, and this is even better. Her best role yet. The second lead couple in this was (somewhat) less emotional, and that made the slow burn more enjoyable in some ways. But I really loved the scenes with Cho-won and Ji-eum. Just as much fun to watch as the romantic scenes.

Ahn Dong-goo as (the driver) Ha Do-yoon. Somehow, this guy had to be more stoic than Ahn Bo-hyun's character, which made the moments when the emotions leaked out of him even more electric. I wish we'd had a few more episodes to get some happy romantic moments towards the end of the series, but he was still great to watch on screen and did an excellent job.

Cha Chung-hwa as (the niece) Kim Ae-kyung. She was good in Hometown Cha x 3, but I would riot if something bad happened to her character in this drama. Did I riot? Watch and find out!

Lee Si-woo as (the little brother) Ha Do-jin. A delightful character played really well by Lee Si-woo. It was always a fun scene when he showed up.

Lee Chae-min as (one weird guy) Kang Min-gi. I always felt unsettled when this guy was in a scene. In case you had doubts about the guy, he had creepy music following him around the entire series, but the actor didn't really need it.

Kang Myung-joo as (the sad mother) Jo Yoo-seon. I really loved her performances even though they were usually the saddest scenes. She had so few lines, and managed to do alot with them.

Bae Hae-sun as (evil stepmom) Jang Yeon-ok. I especially disliked her. The actor did a great job of playing a shameless, entitled backstabber. Nice to see her get a bigger role (liked her in It's okay to not be okay), even if it is as someone not very nice.

Baek Seung-cheol as (all time bad dad) Ban Hak-su. I hated this character so much, which shows the actor did a great job.

Moon Dong-hyuk as (bad brother) Ban Dong-woo. I loathed and pitied this character, overall another good performance.

Kim Si-a as (the 18th lifer) Yoon Joo-won. She did a very good job in some tough scenes. I'm always amazed at how good some of these young actors are.

Park So-yi as (the young 19th lifer) Ban Ji-eum. Very good in the episodes she showed up. Was fun seeing her onscreen opposite Ahn Bo-hyun.

Lee Han-na as (mystery girl) Han-na. They should have done more with this character or figured out how to do without her completely. They just didn't have the episode time to do her justice. Overall, an okay actor that was completely overshadowed by the other actors.

Seo-ha's Family. I'm usually indifferent to chaebol corporate nonsense, but the actors did an excellent job of making you feel like part of the family. A terrible family, that treated Seo-ha terribly. The uncle (played by Lee Hae-young) was a standout, but they were all good in their own way, including the step-brother.

The past lives. I really enjoyed the different past lives. They didn't always have alot of lines, but they still made you feel something as you got little snapshots of harrowing moments in their lives.

The bad rich boy society guys. Honorable mention. I didn't always know their names, but every scene where they mistreated Ha Do-yoon's character was still infuriating, and that was on the actors as much as the writing.

TL;DR

This show is something special. I highly recommend it if you have any kind of interest in the premise. I will definitely be rewatching it.

Farklı mesleklerin konu edildiği dizileri hep seviyorum, bu dizi bize yazılımcıların dünyasına kapı açıyor. Genç girişimlerin yaşadıkları mücadele ve yarışı izlemek oldukça keyifliydi. Hedeflerine ulaşmak için başlarına gelebilecek durumları alternatifli olarak bizlere gösterdiler. Bir izleyici olarak birçok duyguyu bana yaşattılar. Seo Dal-Mi(Bae Suzy) ve Seo In-Jae(Kang Han-Na) ortaokul ve lise çağlarında iki kız kardeştir. Anne babalarının aralarındaki anlaşmazlıklar ile diziye giriş yapıyoruz. Yaşanılan aile için dramdan sonra Dal-Mi babası (Kim Joo-Hun) ile In-Jae ise annesi (Song Seon-Mi) ile kalıyor. Babaanne Choi Won-Deok (Kim Hae-Sook) ise bütün o kucak dolusu sevgisi ve şefkati ile hem bizi hem kızları karşılıyor. O nasıl güzel bir büyük anne karakteriydi, resmen aşık oldum. Kendine ayrıca mini bir hikaye yaratan büyükannemiz küçük bir yemek dükkanı işletiyor. Bir gün sokakta tek başına kalmış bir çocuğa yardımcı oluyor. Han Ji-Pyeong (Kim Sun-Ho) adına çok zeki ve çalışkan genç bir çocuk sokakta kalmıştır. Anne babası ve gidecek yeri olmayan bu çocuğa büyükanne kucak açar. Önce yağmurda akşam sokakta kalmaması için dükkanın anahtarını verir. Sonra aralarında tatlı bir arkadaşlık oluşur. Ji-Pyeong dükkanda kalması karşılığında büyük annenin işlerini yapar. Bu sırada anne babası ayrılan Dal-Mi’ye üzülen büyük annenin aklına bir fikir gelir. Torunu çok yalnız kaldığı için ona hayali bir arkadaş verecektir. Ji-Pyeong’dan ona mektup yazmasını ister. Bir şekilde Ji-Pyeong’u ikna edince, o günün gazetesinden Dal-Mi yaşlarında bir çocuğun adını alırlar. Ve büyük anneyle beraber Dal-Mi’ye mektup yazmaya başlarlar. Bir süre sonra mektupları Ji-Pyeong yazmaya devam eder.

Aradan 15 yıl gibi hatırı sayılır bir zaman geçer. Ji-Pyeong SH Girişim Yatırım Firması’nın en iyi takım lideri olmuştur. Boy boy fotoğrafları basılmış, parmakla gösteriliyordur.  Yatırım yaptığı hiç kimsenin başarısız olmaması ile ünlüdür. Dergi kapaklarında isminden bahsedilir, ünlü ve zengin bir adam olmuştur. Annesi ile giden In-Jae, üvey babasının soyadını almış, bolluk içinde büyümüş ve üvey babasının firmasında CEO olarak çalışmaktadır. Dal-Mi ise kendi işini kurabilmek için üniversiteyi yarıda bırakmıştır. O zamandan beri kimse kimseyle görüşmemiştir. Dal-Mi ise hala küçükken yazıştığı mektup arkadaşını aramaktadır. Ve bütün araştırmaları onu gazetenden çaldıkları isme Nam Do-San (Nam Joo-Hyuk) ‘ a çıkartır.

Nam Do-San ise Kim Yong-San (Kim Do-Wan) ve Lee Chul-San (Yoo Su-Bin) ile SAMSAN adında bir bilişim şirketi kurmuştur. 15 yıl önce kazandığı matematik olimpiyatlarından aldığı gazla kurulan bu şirket aslında üç parasız gencin hayal kurmasından öteye gitmemiştir.  Durumları içler acısıdır. Bir şekilde bütün karakterlerin bir araya gelmesi ile hikaye gelişir ve böyle devam eder.

Nam Joo-Hyuk’u “Weightlifting fairy kim book joo” dizisinde eğlenceli ama biraz itici bulmuştum. “Twenty five, Twenty one” dizisinde ise nefret ettim. “The Bride of Habaek” dizisinde biraz ısınır gibi oldum. Ve son olarak bu dizide tekrar normal seyrini yakaladım. Biraz olsun o nefretimi kırmamı sağladı. Yaşına rağmen kızlarla vakit geçirmemiş, nerd olarak büyümüş bir adamın çekingenliğini çok güzel yansıtmıştı. Karakter gelişimi de aynı şekilde güzel anlatılıyordu. Ama ne yazık ki, nefretimi kırmış olmama rağmen dizi boyunca benim favorim kesinlikle 2.adamdı. Resmen izleyiciler olarak ikinci adam Kim Sun-Ho, esas adam olsun diye imza kampanyası başlatacaktık. Kim Sun-Ho’yu Hometown Cha Cha Cha dizisinde ilk kez izlediğimde bu kadar beni yakalayamamış, idare eder bulmuştum. Burada keşke başrol olsaydı. İlk bölümlerden son bölüme kadar Han Ji Pyeong'un büyükanneyle iletişimi efsaneydi. Öyle güzel bir sevgi vardı ki aralarında dizideki en güzel aşk oydu bence. Yanlış ve geç anlaşılmaları bir o kadar dokunaklıydı. Bayıldım, ikisine de bayıldım.

Dizide başarı hikayelerinin o insanı heyecanlandıran kimyası sonuna kadar havasını korudu. İçimiz kıpır kıpır izledik. Hatta 12.bölüme kadar çok güzel bir ivme artışı vardı. Ve son 4 bölüm… Neden diye haykırasım geldi. Koreliler bunu neden yapıyor neden, neden? “Aradan şu kadar zaman geçti” muhabeti neden bitmemiş. Neden bu kadar takılmış durumdalar bu mevzuya. Tekrar hatırlayınca bile yoruldum. Ne kadar gereksiz olduğunu söylememe gerek bile yok.

Toparlayacak olursak, güzel bir başarı hikayesi diyebiliriz. Karakterler son derece doğaldı. Kimsenin hayatında görmediği o para babaları ütopik zenginler gözlerimizi kanatmadı. Güzel mesajları arka planda gizleyip ilham veren bir hikayeydi. Duygusal yönü ağır basmasına rağmen bütün diziyi himayesine almadı. Dizide beni tek rahatsız eden, aslında rahatsız demek doğru değil, mutsuz eden demek lazım, ikinci erkek sendromuydu. Öyle naif bir ikinci erkek izledik ki, gizliden ağır travmatik olduğunu düşünüyorum. Ve o ikinci erkeğe bence yeterli bir son yazılmamıştı. Keşke ikinci erkek ikinci olmasaydı diyerek izlediğimi tekrar söyleyeyim.

Bence şans verilebilir bir diziydi. Dizi müzikleri içinde ufak bir yorum yapayım, kendi adıma müzikler o kadar diziyle uyuşmuştu ki hiç ön plana çıkmıyordu. Sonrasında dinlediğimde ayrı ayrı beğendim ama izlerken sahnenin önüne geçmediği için fark etmedim. Bu hem iyi hem kötü olarak düşünülebilir. Ben başarılı buldum.
