How they comfort/care for you when you're sick.
CELIA/CECILIA
Cecilia was on her way to the Goddess Pond when she saw you collapse in the field. She immediately gets help and anxiously waits for you to wake. She gives a gentle but firm lecture about pushing yourself too hard when you recover. Cecilia stays around the farm after updating Vesta to help with crops and make you a meal. Before she heads home for the evening, Cecilia stops at the pond to pray to the Harvest Goddess for your good health.
DARYL
He admittedly did not notice you missing your usual visit to the lab. Daryl only knew you were sick after stepping out to chase off Nami and Cole from talking outside his door. Despite his best attempts to return to work, you kept crossing his mind instead. He did not study medicine but was sure he could whip something up. Daryl arrived at your door, ranting to you about his creation. The black liquid held towards you in a beaker did not look promising. His expectant look had you cautiously take a sip. The next thing you knew, you woke up in bed to hear Daryl arguing with Dr. Baddoch over the medicine’s effectiveness.
FLORA
She returns to the surface after being in the dig site all day. Flora knew something was missing today and tried to focus on what it was now that she was off work. A fish jumps from the river, and she thinks of you. Flora knew you were usually at the dig site most days, especially before Van came to town. Her thoughts turned to the suspicious person across the river. What if they turned to your farm? Flora crossed the water, intent on checking nothing happened at your farm. Flora offers to make you a meal so you can rest. The soup is bland with a touch too much salt, but it’s the thought that counts.
GUSTAFA
Gustafa has gotten so used to your schedule that he quickly notices when you don’t come by to listen to him play. He frowns slightly, worried about what might have happened before heading toward the farm. A few steps past the entrance, he finds out from Takakura you’re sick. Gustafa wastes no time in offering to help with the animals so you can rest. Afterward, he wanders home to clean up before returning with a light meal. Gustafa only stays after you beg and assure him you would feel better if he did. You later fall asleep listening to his soft singing and playing.
MARLIN/MATTHEW
It’s the end of the season, and you’ve yet to come to Vesta for advice on what to plant next. He wouldn’t say he’s worried about you specifically, just about your farm. It’s hard to catch back up once you fall behind. The girls later mention Takakura said you were sick as he returned from the City. Cecilia and Vesta nudge him along to go and check on how you’re doing and deliver some seeds you can pay for later. Marlin only pauses for a moment before leaving for your house. Once there, he explains why he’s there and hands over the seeds. Marlin hands you a hybrid crop explaining it was from their greenhouses and should help boost your health more than a regular crop. He mumbles that he hopes you feel better soon and that he missed you today before quickly leaving.
MUFFY/MOLLY
Molly notices you fail to stop for lunch and decides to swing by the farm instead of the Inn for her break. She is devastated when you answer, wrapped in a blanket. Molly quickly ushers you back into bed. A frown creases her pretty brow as she checks your temperature. The only nursing she ever did was a few hours in costume at parties in the City. Molly is used to cleaning the cafe. She cleans around your house before promising to return with a nutritious, light meal from Griffin and some medicine. Before she leaves for her next shift, Molly says she hopes you’re better soon and cares for her the next time she’s sick.
NAMI
Nami was on her way to the Goddess Pond and noticed Takakura in the fields without you in sight. Thinking this was odd, she stopped outside the farm to observe. Nami pushes herself to speak with Takakura about it when you never appear. Nami is silent and thoughtful for a minute before offering to help water the crops. The next day Takakura tells you about her stopping to help. Nami tells you she was just curious about what farmwork was like, and it wasn’t a big deal. She brushes off your thanks but has a slight pink flush on her cheeks.
ROCK
He did think it was odd not to see you in the fields but minded his own business. He finished races with your dog and took a quick nap before catching sight of Takakura, who tells him you are sick. He doesn’t offer to help around the farm and wanders back to the Inn. Once there, he explains you’re sick to Ruby. Rock was going to take you food. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have enough to buy you both something from the cafe and he’s not a great cook. Rock soon returns to your home with his mom’s delicious curry. He spends the rest of the day talking to you about the latest gossip until you fall asleep. Rock catches another nap for himself before heading off for the night.

The Farm in Forgotten Valley
These are just my headcannons for who would play what role in an AWL meets The Cabin in the Woods work. After each category of characters, I'll provide notes or a breakdown of my thoughts. It's been about a year since I last watched the movie, so I might be off on some things. I'd appreciate any other views or ideas, especially when I couldn't decide on a person.
SACRIFICES
The Athlete: Cody/Gordy
The Virgin: Pony/Mark, Lumina, or Rock
The Scholar: Nami or Marlin/Matthew
The Whore: Muffy/Molly
The Fool: Gustafa or Rock
Cody/Gordy from the marriage candidates is the only one who could be The Athlete. Curt in the film also did his best to protect the whole group once danger presented itself and I feel Cody/Gordy would fit that best.
Pony/Mark as the The Virgin. This is because Dana seemed to be a driving force in the movie. So, having the player character Pony/Mark assume that role makes sense. But I could also really see Lumina or Rock as a Final Girl, too, though. He'd choose what's killing the group by messing with an item before everyone else could look around.
To be honest, Holden/The Scholar role didn't make an impression on me in the movie. He was sweet but lackluster compared to the others. The Scholar role seems best suited for Nami or Marlin/Matthew. Both keep to themselves but seem like they would be the logical voice of reason to offer a course of action. Nami wouldn't support splitting up. Marlin/Matthew might if he got to be with Celia/Cecilia.
I really hate the title of The Whore role, but Muffy/Molly was the best fit. Please hear me out. From what the movie shows, before the facility staff really starts affecting everyone, Jules seemed a well-intentioned mom friend for the group. I don't know about you, but Muffy/Molly best fits an outgoing but caring role from the bachelor/ettes. Celia/Cecilia would fit as a mom friend and nurturing role, but I feel like Muffy/Molly was an overall better fit.
First, Marty/The Fool was the best part of The Cabin in the Woods, and I will die on that hill. Gustafa in the role has nothing/very little to do with the marijuana jokes surrounding his character. The Fool role is supposed to be eccentric and gives out insights the others miss. Rock would be great on the eccentric part, but his insights wouldn't be ones even he catches. Marty/The Fool also ends up figuring out what is going on, and Gustafa seems like he would be the underestimated one for that role. I listed Gustafa first for the role because I just like Rock more as The Virgin (even if he might turn it into more of a horror comedy).
FACILITY STAFF
Security: Vesta and Wally/Sully
The Director: Romana
Control Room Technician 1: Sebastian
Control Room Technician 2: Griffin/Gavin
Accounting: Chris and Grant/Garret
Archives: Carter
Bio Med: Dr. Hardy/Baddoch
Chemical: Daryl
Maintenance: Takakura maybe Galen/Gary
Demolition: Kassey/Charlie and Patrick/Cole
Operations: Celia/Cecilia, Nina, and Samantha/San
Zoology: Flora
Kitchen: Tim/Tei and Ruby/Lou
Most of these were pretty straightforward I thought. I would trust Vesta with my life so she made perfect sense for security to me. Wally/Sully just kind has a look that makes me think of a part-time security guard. Romana as The Director because she mentions loving to trick people and the ritual is nothing but a giant trap to lure in sacrifices.
I was a bit stuck on the control room technicians before settling on Sebastian and Griffin/Gavin. Sebastian would fulfill his duties for Romana to keep the ritual on track. Griffin/Gavin seems like he would be sympathetic to the position of the sacrifices but willing to do his job for the greater good.
I feel like Carter, Daryl, Chris, Grant/Garret, and Dr. Hardy/Baddoch were all straightforward. Takakura looks like a maintenance guy (and I mean that with the utmost respect because they're some of my favorite coworkers). I prefer him for the Harbinger role but no one else fits Maintenance like him. I guess Galen/Gary could fit in Maintenance but he seems like the I know everything and how to fix it but I'm about to retire guy.
The twins have to be demolition. I mean they ended up in the valley after a mishap with fireworks literally blew them away. Celia/Cecilia, Nina, and Samantha/San for Operations. Their primary duty is monitoring the sacrifices and they seemed fitting for different reasons to being sensitive there. Lastly, Flora seems studious and the best suited for researching/upkeep of all the monsters.
OTHERS
Harbinger: Takakura, Vesta, or Marlin/Matthew
The Ancient One: Harvest Goddess
I just love, love, love Takakura as the Harbinger. He'd do his best to deter them, but when the young idiots insist, he shrugs and continues his day. Vesta or Marlin/Matthew could also work since they're the first ones when entering the valley. Celia/Cecilia seems to nice to fill the role and would spill the beans instead. I guess Van would be a good fit for the position as well since he's not a permanent resident of the valley.
The Harvest Goddess not being seen actually works great for this concept! The rituals have been working! Let's stay where we don't see her in the valley.
I know I've missed characters but I couldn't figure out places for Mui/Pui, made a choice to leave the kids out, and didn't want to make the Sprites or Mukumuku monsters.

Baby Blues (Cecilia Angst)
TW: Themes of Miscarriage
Well, sorry for the heavy themes in advance even if angst was requested. The prompt was a crying baby when you don't have one. I should have done Rock's after this one.
You yawned, fighting back sleep to listen to the high-pitched wail. Swinging your feet from the bed to the cold, wooden floor, you hastened to the nursery. You thought the added room was an excellent idea. Cecilia wouldn’t have had a chance to sleep through the piercing cries in the same room. This way, you could help and let her rest separate from a newborn. The screaming halted as you swung open the door.
Moonlight entered through the window, coating the empty room in a soft silver glow. You panicked seeing the empty bed. Adrenaline flooded your veins, forcing your tiredness roughly away to focus. The room was barren because you didn’t have a child. You sank numbly to the bed, cradling the bear that had rested on the pillows.
Cecilia and you had tried so hard. She picked each piece of the bedroom suite to ensure your child could grow into a room. Cecilia went beyond the minimal and filled the room with love before she was pregnant. You had laughed, telling her there wouldn’t be space for a baby if she kept filling the room with clothes and toys.
Everything had seemed smooth sailing once Cecilia was pregnant. You hadn’t believed your wife could be more beautiful, but she glowed as she carried a new life. Cecilia would frown and swat at you when you told her this. She didn’t feel beautiful with the morning sickness and her growing stomach. She fussed about leaving all the farm work to Takakura and you. It didn’t matter how much you both reassured her it was fine. Cecilia only listened when you told her stress wasn’t good for the baby.
Was it your fault? Did you miss something? Was Cecilia not comfortable?
You could still feel the sinking horror the morning you woke to blood-stained sheets and her in pain. Maybe things would have been different if you had taken the horse to fetch Dr. Baddoch rather than a rushed run. Instead, you returned to Cecilia’s hysterically sobbing and clinging to Takakura. Dr. Baddoch gently confirmed the worst. Cecilia had miscarried.
Her anguished wails as Takakura buried the remains of your first child still haunted you. You felt helpless as Cecilia brushed away any affection and support from you. Everyone grieves differently. You couldn’t understand the pain she must feel. The platitudes became lost within the avoided gazes and heavy atmosphere of the village who mourned your loss.
“Dear, Cecilia’s soft voice beckoned you back from your thoughts. Her small hand rested on your own, wrapped tightly around the bear. Your hands and the fluffy, brown toy soaked with tears. When did that happen? You were only now aware of your burning eyes and the lump in your throat.
“I’m sorry. I must have woken you,” you murmured as Cecilia sat on the bed beside you. Her head came to rest on your shoulder as her arms wrapped around you. The two of you sat still in the room until the morning sun filtered in. Regardless of what the future held, you would weather the storm together.

Pumpkin Psychosis (Marlin/Matthew Angst)
TW: Postpartum Psychosis, Harm to an Infant
Postpartum anything is terrifying. I hope anyone and everyone has an excellent support system to help recognize when something is wrong.
You hadn’t been sleeping. It was the symptom of a new family. Marlin had noticed what he called concerning behaviors. His claims of your instability were outrageous. The mood swings and irritability were just the results of less sleep. After all, it was hard to fall asleep unless you were sure the baby was settled. Marlin helped, but your child’s wails still woke you each time. This was all part of the growing pains of creating a family. Any parents of a newborn would tell you the same.
The pumpkins had grown in beautifully. You were excited to carve them into fun faces. It would be adorable first fall pictures for your daughter and family. Marlin would be ecstatic when he woke from his nap and saw the jack-o-lanterns. You steadied the rounded squash against the table, raising your knife to cut the lid open. The stab brought a thick, red ooze from where the knife’s tip entered the pumpkin’s flesh.
“Marlin! Marlin!” you screamed your husband’s name.
Pumpkins weren’t supposed to bleed! What had happened? It must be one of his hybrid crops! It was a brilliant scare for the season. You wondered how he achieved such a thing. A gasp escaped you as Marlin roughly yanked the knife from your hands and shook you. He was screaming something about the baby. You frowned, confused the baby was sleeping peacefully in the other room. Marlin would wake the baby at this rate, and you needed help with the hybrid pumpkin.
You took in Marlin cradling your daughter. She was dressed in orange, though you couldn’t tell with all the blood on her. Your baby was bleeding! She didn’t cry, and Marlin flinched from you as you approached. You rushed forward to help and ask what happened, but Takakura held you from them. When did he get here? The older man tried to calm you as Marlin fled the house to Dr. Baddoch. You were left struggling against Takakura beside a bloodstained table.
Dr. Baddoch had you admitted to a facility that specialized in postpartum psychosis. It was there that you learned that the pumpkin was never a pumpkin. Your daughter was able to toddle and babble now. Her hair grown into a bob long enough to hide the scar from the knife you inserted.
The doctors assured you the psychosis wasn’t permanent. Your regular visits with Takakura, Marlin, and your daughter were excellent progress. They wanted you to begin holding your daughter when they visited. Marlin insisted things weren’t your fault. You had a medical diagnosis. He wanted to work with you in helping you reacclimate to life on the farm. He felt guilty for having missed the signs that you needed help. You worried about ever touching your daughter and being along with her again.

Unnamed Daryl POV Snippet
They had agreed to work together after the fiasco during Rock’s test of courage on the mountain. Daryl couldn’t help but grumble as he cleared a seat. The farmer had been nothing but presumptuous until now. She challenged him constantly about how any true scientist wouldn’t take stock of ghost stories and fairy tales correlated with strange readings in the valley. How was she always in the middle of spikes? No doubt Pony thought she had been successful in steering him away.
“Foolish farmer,” Daryl muttered. He had known something was off with this farmer for months. Daryl wouldn’t care anything about Pony if it wasn’t for her mystical entrance into a tree in the woods back in Spring. She had enthusiastically had a conversation with something he couldn’t see within the layers of bark. The bits he could catch through the tree’s small cavities confirmed there was more to the myths Pony publicly dismissed. They had a basis in reality. Their population most likely diminished from humans and industry (however limited such advancements were in Forget-Me-Not Valley) but warranted some concern.
“Aww, you erased your little picture of Flora?” the sound of Pony’s voice suddenly in the lab caused Daryl to jolt forward. He whirled around to focus on the woman. He had just changed the codes yet again; how was she getting in? She infuriated him, Daryl decided as his heart pounded when Pony smirked,” It was so cute. You should have left it.”
“Sit here,” Daryl roughly pointed to the empty stool. “You mentioned briefly your predisposition to seeing these creatures is genetic. From the few records I read, your father lived here unbothered for years without any paranormal events. I’m presuming your particular abilities are from your mother’s lineage. Have you always resided in the city?”
“Are you going to draw a cute little doodle of me in there too?” she asked, leaning towards him to glance at the journal he used to take precise notes. Daryl snapped the book closed. Perhaps she came from a family of imps.
“No, we moved around a lot. Just my mom and me, though we’ve met others like us. She kept an address in the city so Dad wouldn’t worry, but we were hardly ever there. The things living in the city tend to congregate and are more of a nightmare than just moving around.”
“Would you mind if I check a few things?”
“You’re going to dissect me, aren’t you?” Pony feigned shock, crossing her arms protectively over her chest.
“If you’re incapable of taking this seriously-”
“No, sorry! I was told experiments followed by dissection would be my life if someone found out. It just helps to joke about it,” Pony mumbled. “What do you want to check?”
“Primarily an eye exam. It would be the least invasive and rule out any physical abnormalities that alter your vision from what others see.”
“Oh, yeah. That’s fine.”
She agreed, so why was Pony not cooperating? Each time Daryl tried to view her eyes with the ophthalmoscope, she turned her head. It didn’t seem intentional on her part, but his patience was beginning to run thin. Daryl leaned back, waiting for Pony to shift to face him. His hand shot forward. Daryl’s thumb and fingers pressed firmly enough into the corners of her jaw to immobilize her from turning again. The shock provided an added benefit of her eyes opening wider from the action. He was dimly aware of Pony swallowing against his hand. Daryl pushed the sensation to the back of his mind to focus instead on his examination.
Nothing. Daryl wasn’t an expert with a medical degree, but there wasn’t anything outside the typical eye’s anatomy. He doubted Dr. Baddoch would obtain different results. Daryl was intrigued by the hint of another color lurking beneath her green eyes. He paused a moment longer intently staring into her eyes. Daryl couldn’t deduce if it was a hint of blue or grey before his hand fell away, and he sat upright. Daryl saw a faint blush spread across Pony. The realization chased his next question from his mind.
“W-well, I’ve got to go. Something just came up at the farm that needs my attention,” Pony recovered first. She hastened to her feet and towards the door. “Just, uh, let me know the results later. Okay, bye!”
Daryl blinked in shock as the door clipped shut behind her. What just happened? He quickly recovered, scoffing at the flustered farmer. She obviously didn’t know how to behave in a professional examination. It was apparent to him from her inability to sit still and the pathetic excuse. Pony would have no method of knowing something was wrong with her farm from his lab. He’d be embarrassed by such behavior too.
He wiped his sweaty palms on his frayed pants, dismissing how warm they suddenly felt. It was excitement from finally beginning work on unraveling the farmer’s mystery. It had nothing whatsoever to do with her flushed face.

Auspicious Recordings (Angst)
You knew Takakura had trouble with the farm after your father’s passing, but you didn’t realize he left the house untouched. He had, of course, cleaned some before you arrived. The house was free of dust and looked lived in. However, it wasn’t lived in by anyone still alive. The bookshelves burst with novels you would never pick and multitudes of farmer's almanacs. His old clothes filled the dresser. The stench of mothballs let you know he took care to protect them.
Everything in the drawers was dumped, mothballs and all, into your moving boxes to contain your clothes. You had slowly started sorting through your father’s things. It felt odd going through the life of essentially a stranger. You had always wanted to see him more. Life became more complicated as you grew older, filled with activities, school, and friends. Your trips to the farm became less and less. He tried to visit you in the noisy city whose harsh sounds made him jump and fidget. Dad’s trips had lessened as you grew and promised to come by Forget-Me-Not Valley later. The later came too late.
You held back a laugh as you pulled yet another red and black flannel from the box. Was your dad a farmer or a lumberjack? You couldn’t keep all of them. The thought of offering one of the numerous flannels to Takakura crossed your mind as you grabbed the next one, and something thudded from the shirt to the floor. You set the shirt aside to grab an old tape recorder. A soft gasp slipped from you when you saw a cassette inside.
“Y/N’s fond of Momo. I always told you that they would be an excellent rancher,” your father’s voice played. You could hear Takakura agreeing with him before you stopped the tape. You sat frozen, stunned by what you heard. Your first cow on the farm had been a gift from Takakura. How would your dad have known Momo’s name years before you received her? Your hands shook as you hit play once again.
“The turnips were a great choice. Y/N takes after you more than me,” your dad’s laughter erupted from the speaker. “I can’t keep anything other than the trees alive. Who do you think y/n will marry? I can’t wait to see.”
You choked back a sob when you heard knocking on the door. Takakura poked his head in, his thick brows raising in concern at the sight of you crumpled on the floor.
“H-how did he know? It was y-years before I came here,” you hiccupped through tears, showing the old farmer the tape recorder. Takakura awkwardly patted your back as he sat next to you amidst the shades of flannel. The grizzled farmer gently explained your father’s mind started to slip towards the end of his life, and Dr. Baddoch told Takakura to agree with him. Disagreeing with your dad’s delusions would only agitate the man further. Takakura wasn’t aware your dad had recorded their talks.
A fresh wave of tears flooded your face as you leaned into Takakura’s shoulder. You felt horrible. You should have never put your father on the back burner the way you did. It had always seemed a given he would always be right down the road on the farm whenever you had time for a visit. Takakura hesitantly wrapped an arm around you, doing his best to reassure you that your dad was nothing but proud of you. He remained sitting with you as the room bathed in reds from the setting sun.
