This is my tip for home users for any kind of important recovery codes or software product keys: Print out the key and put it in your underwear drawer. Keep it there with your backup drive. One of the things enterprise storage and destruction company Iron Mountain does is handle the archiving of the media industry's vaults. What it has been seeing lately should be a wake-up call: Roughly one-fifth of the hard disk drives dating to the 1990s it was sent are entirely unreadable.

Music industry publication Mix spoke with the people in charge of backing up the entertainment industry. The resulting tale is part explainer on how music is so complicated to archive now, part warning about everyone's data stored on spinning disks.

"In our line of work, if we discover an inherent problem with a format, it makes sense to let everybody know," Robert Koszela, global director for studio growth and strategic initiatives at Iron Mountain, told Mix. "It may sound like a sales pitch, but it's not; it's a call for action."

Hard drives gained popularity over spooled magnetic tape as digital audio workstations, mixing and editing software, and the perceived downsides of tape, including deterioration from substrate separation and fire. But hard drives present their own archival problems. Standard hard drives were also not designed for long-term archival use. You can almost never decouple the magnetic disks from the reading hardware inside, so if either fails, the whole drive dies.

There are also general computer storage issues, including the separation of samples and finished tracks, or proprietary file formats requiring archival versions of software. Still, Iron Mountain tells Mix that “if the disk platters spin and aren’t damaged," it can access the content.

But "if it spins" is becoming a big question mark. Musicians and studios now digging into their archives to remaster tracks often find that drives, even when stored at industry-standard temperature and humidity, have failed in some way, with no partial recovery option available.

“It’s so sad to see a project come into the studio, a hard drive in a brand-new case with the wrapper and the tags from wherever they bought it still in there,” Koszela says. “Next to it is a case with the safety drive in it. Everything’s in order. And both of them are bricks.”

Entropy Wins

Mix's passing along of Iron Mountain's warning hit Hacker News earlier this week, which spurred other tales of faith in the wrong formats. The gist of it: You cannot trust any medium, so you copy important things over and over, into fresh storage. "Optical media rots, magnetic media rots and loses magnetic charge, bearings seize, flash storage loses charge, etc.," writes user abracadaniel. "Entropy wins, sometimes much faster than you’d expect."

There is discussion of how SSDs are not archival at all; how floppy disk quality varied greatly between the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s; how Linear Tape-Open, a format specifically designed for long-term tape storage, loses compatibility over successive generations; how the binder sleeves we put our CD-Rs and DVD-Rs in have allowed them to bend too much and stop being readable.

Knowing that hard drives will eventually fail is nothing new. Ars wrote about the five stages of hard drive death, including denial, back in 2005. Last year, backup company Backblaze shared failure data on specific drives, showing that drives that fail tend to fail within three years, that no drive was totally exempt, and that time does, generally, wear down all drives. Google's server drive data showed in 2007 that HDD failure was mostly unpredictable, and that temperatures were not really the deciding factor.

So Iron Mountain's admonition to music companies is yet another warning about something we've already heard. But it's always good to get some new data about just how fragile a good archive really is.

Rifleman

The definitive anti-aircraft 'Mech, the Rifleman was first fielded in 2505, making it among the earliest 'Mechs ever built. Designed as a medium fire-support platform, the Rifleman was plagued with a variety of problems since its debut and was ill-suited as a front-line combatant. However, its combination of long-ranged weaponry, including rapid-fire autocannons, and its excellent targeting and tracking system ensured it would remain a viable battlefield unit through half a millennium of combat.

Kallon Industries built the first RFL-1N Rifleman for the Hegemony Armed Forces, but chronic overheating problems forced a return to the drawing boards, with an improved RFL-2N introduced fifty years later. Kallon's engineers still believed the 'Mech suffered too much from overheating, and tried to fix the problem with the definitive RFL-3N by replacing some of its heat-intensive energy weapons with autocannons. Although a marked improvement, the engineers were still not satisfied with the end result and tried to produce a 'Mech which would address the issues of heat management, protection and endurance which continued to plague the Rifleman. Their response, the JagerMech, featured several improvements over the older 'Mech but did not wholly replace it, instead complementing it whenever the two served in the same unit together.

With the collapse of the Star League and start of the Succession Wars, the Rifleman was scattered amongst the militaries of the Successor States. House Davion fielded the largest concentration of Riflemen and used them to good effect in their battles with House Kurita. Unfortunately, combat losses increasingly forced many Riflemen to be deployed directly on the front-lines, where their deficiencies in close combat against similar-mass 'Mechs were apparent. After the recovery of the Helm Memory Core, rediscovered lostech was used in an attempt to improve upon the venerable Rifleman, with manufacturers deploying a number of new variants around the time of the Clan Invasion.

By the time of the FedCom Civil War, new prototypes of Rifleman variants were still being worked on, but the aging 'Mech had since acquired a poor reputation due to its weak protection and bad heat management. The 'Mech experienced something of a revival though when Kallon's factory on the moon Talon was subjected to a blockade by the 7th FedCom RCT, disrupting production of the newer JMS-7 JagerMech. The company brought up their experimental RFL-8D Rifleman to full-scale production as just a temporary measure, but the improved 'Mech wound up being fielded by both Loyalist and Allied forces during the civil war. Additional variants were introduced since then, with both the Free Worlds League and Word of Blake making use of advanced Riflemen during the Jihad.

The Rifleman's focus on fire-support and anti-aircraft work dictated a heavy load of long-range weapons to the exclusion of everything else. It carried a particularly heavy battery of two Magna Mk. III Large Lasers paired with two Imperator-A medium autocannons, one of each mounted in each arm. Two Magna Mk. II medium lasers were split between the side torsos to provide backup. One ton of autocannon ammunition was carried in the center torso, enough for short, sharp engagements but not enough for extended periods of combat. The 'Mech's ten heat sinks were grossly inadequate for constant fire, but in an anti-aircraft role, the Rifleman was expected to have time to dissipate heat while the target aircraft turned for its next pass.

The Rifleman suffered from a miserly amount of armoring - just seven and a half tons total - with its rear torso particularly thin. It also lacked hand or lower-arm actuators, hampering it in a melee confrontation, and was not particularly fast, with a cruising speed of 43.2 km/h. When operating in its intended role of providing overwatch for other 'Mechs, these deficiencies were not terribly noticeable, and it could still overpower lighter opponents by dint of its size. These drawbacks did mean that a commander would only commit their Riflemen in a head-on confrontation with heavy enemy forces as a last resort.

An exceptional piece of electronics, the Garret D2j targeting-tracking system allowed the Rifleman to maintain an accurate lock on swift-moving aerial targets and achieve excellent accuracy. The Garret T11-A was equally impressive as a communications system, although its distinctive wing-shaped design tended to draw the enemy's attention...and their fire.

The Rifleman was limited to turning its torso 40° to either side, seemingly presenting a significant blind-spot in the rear to exploit. However, its ability to flip its arms over and use those weapons to target enemies behind it presented a nasty surprise for an enemy attempting to come up and engage the 'Mech from the rear.

AHHH don't worry my love it's my silly fingers that are at fault here. I'm going to do a little bullet point fic and hopefully I'll get the gist of what you put in your prompt!!!

Hob is captured in battle and given to Destruction (which makes total sense since he's the warlord of the whole Endless fam and was actually responsible for their victories). Destruction himself obviously has this reputation for being an insanely powerful soldier and it's fair to say that Hob is a little intimidated when he's handed over to the enormous man.

But. Destruction is a very gentle and kind person, and while Hob is moved into his quarters and fully expects to serve his new master, Destruction doesn't make any moves to use him. His only request is for Hob to pose for sketches. It's actually really nice and sweet, and they begin to relax in each other's company bit by bit. Destruction shyly asks to be called Ollie, and Hob just melts because he's absolutely falling in love with this gentle giant.

Their life together is pleasant and they keep dancing around their obvious attraction to each other, until an assassin makes an attempt on Ollie's life. They get as far as aiming to stab him, but Hob doesn't even think twice about putting himself between the knife and the man he loves. He ends up in a bad way but the wound isn't enough to kill him.

Ollie is so mad that Hob would do such a thing and gives him a proper telling off as soon as he's conscious. Hob just grins loopily and says he'd do anything for love. Ollie obviously has to return the sentiment (but he says that if Hob ever puts himself in danger again, he'll kill him).

During Hob’s long recovery the horniness is EXCRUCIATING. Apart from kissing and some light petting, all sexual activities are off the table. Hob literally begs Ollie to finger him but his fingers are so thick... they have to stop for fear of impeding Hob’s healing. On the plus side Ollie does promise to put his whole hand into Hob as soon as his stomach muscles have healed up 100%... Hob has been thirsting over those huge hands and he is very eager to have those sword calluses inside him.

Ollie's sketches of Hob are VERY spicy these days. Hob can't believe that he really looks like that - Ollie's close-up sketches of his widely spread hole are particularly beautiful. Ollie even tries to draw Hob while fucking him, and while they're not the most accurate depictions, Hob treasures them all the same.

I just saw primal titan posts and now I'm curios how exactly human is gonna turn back to normal size? What if they get stuck in that form permanently?? That would be really inconvenient-

Also: is theres some time limit between normal and primal forms? How this works?

I like to think of it like a temporary form, similar to gigantimax from pokemon. The human becomes large for a time, but it wears off after a while and they return to normal size. This can range from an hour to a few hours. How they discovered it was by complete accident during a tight conflict when their friends and themselves were in danger and they accidentally got in the way of an experimental weapon's shot. Getting hit in the crossfire, but then suddenly growing to a larger form that defeated the looming skibidi threat that threatened to run over their friends and the whole battalion they were a part of. During their primal titan form, they become sturdier and much more aggressive than normal. Being very willing to rip and bash in Skibidis of similar size. Even helping smaller units by crushing large foes underfoot or kicking them FAR across the city. They move faster than the real titans and they are still pretty vulnerable, even with their body armor on. But that's where their allies come in, specifically Pal and company. Pal is now able to use his powers much more freely, now that the human is VERY large. So he knocks down airborne attackers with a sound-focused blast. Buddy and Fiend help from the ground by attacking units with ranged weapons and crippling their counter attacks. The alliance members also help in the push. This is how the human can breach so deep into defenses and finish an objective that secures the alliance a win. They're an emergency titan with various immunities and a pack of powerful backups. This is also how they are able to talk to the titans much more formerly until their temporary form collapses and the human is returned to a normal size, albeit extremely exhausted. To which Pal snatches them up and flies them back to safety for a full recovery. So, yeah. That's how the "primal" titan is and works. <: )

Apparently the SanDisk portable SSD is/was a hot Black Friday deal, but they've been so prone to failing that a class-action lawsuit was filed over it.

I also saw people recommended Western Digital as an alternative to SanDisk, but... Western Digital owns SanDisk. The class-action lawsuit for the failing SanDisk drives is directed at Western Digital.

Specifically, they single out the following devices: SanDisk Extreme Pro, SanDisk Extreme, and Western Digital My Passport SSD in the sizes 500GB, 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB.

Some of them, like the 4TB Extreme Pro Portable, had discounts up to $200, which is a pretty solid deal considering they've knowingly been facing widespread hardware failures for over 6 months.

I never bought one, but I did have a Western Digital Elements external HD that my dad got me as a gift. It would randomly disconnect itself without being touched, and when I tried to unplug then replug it in, I had to do it 3 or 4 times in a row before it would get recognized again. We bought a new connecting cable since that seemed to be the problem, but it continued doing that with the new cable. Also, idk if it came this way or if it happened over time, but sectors on the external HD became corrupted to the point where my computer would get a Blue Screen of Death every time I tried copying files onto it. I got around that by using the 3rd party program TeraCopy instead of the built-in Windows copying program, but like...

My dad got me that external HD specifically because I've had 2 unrecoverable hard drive failures happen to me several years apart when I was a kid. Losing writing, drawings, photos, conversation logs with friends, stuff that just no longer exists at all. So I became pretty paranoid about backup storage. And having my backup storage randomly disconnect by itself and crash my computer when I try to use it... Obviously not ideal.

Anyway, the new external HD I got to replace that one is SeaGate. I don't know if that's "better," there's a 100% chance people have stories about SeaGate's products that are exactly like mine with Western Digital. So I'm just hoping for the best lol ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

ㅤInfected sat in the ship nervously, watching Pest on the monitor as he neared the ship, the map making his indicator a suspicious red dot instead of the usual yellow one that indicated a person. He heard a light clang behind him, and Infected slowly turned his head towards the sound, coming face to face with Pest in the doorway of the ship. Infected paled slightly when he noticed Pest wearing the mimic mask, and he was just standing there, staring him down, unmoving. ㅤHe sniffled nervously, hand on the stick that would turn the ship on. When Infected sniffled, 'Pest' started moving forward and Infected let out a small shriek, slamming down on the stick and starting up the ship. 'Pest' suddenly stopped, and as the ship flew off, the mask deactivated and fell off at his feet. He blinked a couple times, taking his helmet off and staring down at the mask. ㅤ"y0U [Content Deleted]!!!!1! u kN0 no7 2 PuT 0n t3H Ma$k!!!!" Infected yelled at Pest, getting frustrated. He growled at Infected, his mandibles twitching slightly. ㅤ"I didn't put the #### thing on! Something PUT IT on me!" He argued back, kicking the mimic mask, making it slide across the floor and underneath the filing cabinet. He cringed, knowing it was worth some money, so he quietly hoped that he didn't break it by doing that. ㅤInfected rolled his eyes, and went back to the monitor. Fear slowly dawned on his face as he realized he started up the ship and Poob wasn't here. Which meant they were either dead, or he accidentally left them behind, which was basically leaving them for dead. Pest slowly came up next to him and looked at the monitor as Infected switched it over to Poob, showing them unmoving in a random part of the map on the planet they just left. Infected muttered something that sounded more like an upset whine than actual words, and Pest snickered softly. "Oh they're definitely dead."

ㅤThe ship made a small jingle sound, and both of them turned around when they heard the sound of boots softly hitting the ground. Poob had appeared next to the filing cabinet, teetering on their feet lightly as if they were dizzy from the recovery and instant teleport back to the crew's ship. Infected sighed softly in relief, looking back over at the monitor and grumbling as it now said that they were fined $50 for the death of Poob and not recovering their body and items. ㅤPest walked over to Poob and leaned his shoulder on theirs, tilting his head down slightly to look at them and smiling toothily that made his face crinkle up around the eyes. "So, how was being dead?" He said, placing his other hand on his hip, acting a bit sassy. ㅤPoob recovered themselves, and whirled around to face Pest, pushing him away and taking their helmet off as well to frown at him more effectively. "u KILLED ME! WIF A STOP SIGN!" they pouted. ㅤInfected looked at Pest in surprise, then looked at Poob, growing angry again. "h3y!! H3 tr13d 2 d0 tH@t 2 M3 T00!!!11!" ㅤ"now becus of u, we hav a $50 fine and we r barely gonna meet quota!" Poob went over to the cabinet and opened it to grab more backup supplies, Pest snickering again at seeing them so riled up. ㅤ"Surprising that you're only worth $50. あなたには5ドルの価値しかない。(You're only worth $5)" Pest joked with the last statement, crossing his arms and leaning now against the ship wall, still smiling at Poob. They grumbled and walked over to him, flicking his beetle horn with a smile back, purposely trying to piss him off. Pest growled, swatting their hand away. "Excuse you!" he retorted. ㅤPoob retorted back, "o im sory am i supposed to feel BAD towerds my MURDERER?" They flicked his mandible now, knowing Pest wasn't going to bite them. Infected had a small smile on his face as he heard this little argument between them, busy calculating the loot they had in the corner and hoping it was enough money, with some left over.

ㅤSnarling, Pest pushed past Poob and walked over to the computer. "#### you. We're going to Titan." He smirked, typing in the coordinates with fast precision as if he had done this many times over before. Infected twirled around, looking at Pest in fear. Both him and Poob yelled in unison, "N0!!!!" while running over to Pest, not realizing it was too late and he already redirected the ship and started it back up. ㅤ"we r so ded." Poob hissed out, picking up their party horn from the monitor desk and blowing it obnoxiously loud at Pest, smacking his cheek with it. ㅤ"We'll be fiiine. Have faith, Poobear."
