Curtwen Week Day 4: Haunted

#icemav#top gun edit#ice is a FASCINATING one to watch post-hop 31 imo because while yes‚ obviously‚ the focus is on maverick and his grief and devastation#ice is there the whole time in the background‚ watching. and he's visibly disturbed by what he's seeing. because yeah -#he and mav had a rivalry going and yeah he called maverick dangerous and reckless to his face and he stands by that - he does.#but the problem is that this time - this one fluke freak accident of a time - it wasn't maverick's fault at all.#an unrecoverable flat spin brought on by a compressor stall from ice's jetwash isn't something that maverick could've outflown#by sticking to textbook maneuvers. it was just shit luck and shitty circumstances aligning to create a tragic mishap.#but now - now ice can see the way maverick is unraveling in the aftermath#and i'd bet that on some level it terrifies him to see that.#he's used to seeing maverick with all that brash cocky confidence with the moves to back it up.#he's maybe even had a bit of fun jockeying against that. not that he'd admit that out loud. (yet)#but maverick's spiraling now - a hollowed out shell of his former self - leaking grief and self-doubt and despair everywhere he goes#and it actually hurts to look at for ice‚ seeing maverick like this. seeing how much maverick really REALLY fucking cared under that facade#and wondering if maverick is finally taking the stuff ice said to him to heart‚ but applying it all wrong.#so he watches maverick and eventually that concern builds to a point where he tries to offer an olive branch in the locker room#you can SEE how carefully he gathers himself - how much he's holding back - he doesn't want to say the wrong thing to maverick NOW#he doesn't want to make this worse than it already is. so it comes out stilted. it's earnest - but restrained. he can't find his footing.#he doesn't know where he and maverick stand now but he's sorry - that goose is gone‚ that maverick's going through this‚#that he doesn't know how to help or what to say‚ and - crucially - for his own part in this.#but he wants mav to stick around and push through this. even though he's dangerous. even though he's reckless. ice wants him to beat this.#so when maverick shows up to graduation‚ ice is encouraged. and he's a little warmer. maverick really might pull through.#but then‚ all too soon‚ it's ice's life on the line in maverick's hands. and it scares the shit out of him because maverick's not ready#and now ice - and slider - are going to have to pay the price for that.#and then‚ against all odds‚ maverick pushes through. he comes back for them. he comes back for ice.#and after that...well.#after that‚ ice does know what to say: a vow.#my amvs#linds original

I finished posting the unabashedly educational Sword Fic.
It includes a detailed (but hopefully beginner-friendly) explanation of all the steps of making a Nichirin blade from a sunny mountain like Mt. Youkou, a touch of swordsmith and metalworker folk lore (including demons), meta about what must make Kimetsu no Yaiba's swordsmithing methods different from real life methods, some character exploration for Haganezuka and his polishing method, vocabulary and additional resources in the chapter notes, and hopefully, an endearing, silly POV character to learn this all through.
#my fics#SWORDS SWORDS SWORDS#would you like a story about the years of background of this fic?#I was not very well-versed in metallurgy until recent years but my study of the Japanese language goes back to#well#longer than some of you may have been around#I always liked samurai and swords for the aesthetic but started to take more of an interest when I lived in Shimane#and on a day when I had a friend taking me around to rural sites associated with a legendary monster she was like#let's go see the sword museum while you're out here#but that museum was closed (it comes back into this story though)#so we went to a different one that no longer exists but that was my first encounter with how much work it takes to make the sword ore#fast forward years later#I am writing this blog and it becomes known as a fun place to read about Japanese culture as seen in KnY (thanks glad you enjoy)#I decide that I must tell people how hard it is to make the ore and finally visit that main museum on a trip back to Shimane#I collect material and struggle to do more research and wrap my head around it#and I write the first version of Teppi's story that focused mostly on the smelting and glazed over the forging and polishing and stuff#meanwhile I am in a job situation I have already long since wanted out of and soon I want out a lot more desperately#job searches were disheartening but then I found THE ONE I WANTED#and on that first interview when I was already like PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE#they asked if there's a Japanese cultural topic I could suddenly explain in great detail if asked#and without mentioning this blog I said I had recently written up something for fun about tatara smelting methods (and they forgot this)#fast forward again and I very happily got the job and was very nervous as I got the rundown on a very large annual nerd project#and when they announced the topics for that year I saw that tatara smelting methods in the region I knew them from was on the list#and I was like#asudyaiusdyuasdyuahduahduhsdhuPLEASE GIVE ME THAT#and i got it and when I went out there for research people were like#...why do you know all this...???????#and since I dared not mention my KnY blog I was like#...I lived in Shimane...#it seems I broke the tags because the rest of the story got cut off but hi yes you get the idea

listen hw2 was fun and all when it came out but god am I glad that we have other stuff going on now and that it's not the most recent relevant thing to talk about bc. jesus was it frustrating when it came out
#i know its still technically the most recent steel wool release#but we have SUCH a better idea of wtf is going on now.#and hw2 when it released was so confusing and it was fun theorizing but#it was so frustrating#im just glad that now we have a light at the end of the tunnel#like at least to me the hw2 update showed us why the game is the way it is#it was just to dump a bunch of little story lore to get it out of the way#i looked in my hw2 spoilers tag just now and even back then i kept describing it as all over the place with too many different aspects#it just makes perfect sense#but after sotm releases we'll actually be back to releases being cool and having meaning#and i truly am confident about thar#now that we know that everything from ruin to sotm was overall to secure the mimic into the story#pandas.txt#i know that the other stuff we have going on in question is SOTM#so like. not the most interesting and engaging. at least for a fan like me#but the point is that we're closer to actual cool shit happening again that isnt just about the mimic even if it isnt eveb#like hw2 was. it wasnt about the mimic but it was overall to get tiny lore out of the way so it had a clearer path#and then they literally updated the game to be about the mimic a few days ago so.#after sotm we are FREE#and we have THREE major references and easter eggs of ggy in fnaf stuff in a row#ggy game is soon!!!

ok i'm done... to be honest my feelings towards this story haven't changed in the slightest since 2022. it's the best manga ever made and noda is an insanely talented artist and storyteller. it's peerless. tsurumi is still the focal point for me and everything else comes after, but said everything else is better than anything else in the industry. and i still think it should have ended at 313. i don't agree with the sentiment that the ending was a flop, i think it was... appropriate, but considering that everything else has been out of line, it's no wonder that people expected something more grand. the omake is still as disgusting as it was two years ago, a choice profoundly bizarre and disheartening but nothing is perfect
#i was way too obsessed with gk back in the day so most of it was very vivid in my head therefore the reread happened too soon i think...#should have waited another 5-6 years#but anyway it reads much MUCH better as a whole story than a weekly gig. makes more sense and has more integrity and momentum#all in all great manga one in a million nothing will come close to it ever etc. there's stuff i'm still unpleased with#but they fade in comparison to what i love about it. a 10/10 recommend in fact why are you reading this and not golden kamuy rn#gkposting#also the liveblogging was fun thanks for sticking around sorry for the spam

#my art#art summary#2023 art summary#art school is actually so fun sometimes did you know that. i made so many fun comics and experimented with new stuff. sometimes i wasn’t#any good at what i tried but it’s still sooo rewarding when i improved even just a little. and it feels REALLY good#to be able to show off some skills or familiarity with materials that i use less often these days#bc i can show my marker or colored pencil drawings and my classmates who have only seen my digital stuff are excited about it sometimes :-]#bc i really just like working in a lot of different mediums and i’m really thankful that my love for art and art making hasn’t dwindled#even though of course i have dormant periods and times where i don’t feel like making art or i feel frustrated with what i am able to do#it always comes back around. just like how i always feel better whenever i feel depressed#and i just love art and colors and i love the world and the people in it and myself and all the people i have been#anyways i hope you all feel happy or you will soon hugs and kisses goodnight (extremely loud thunk on the floor)
