So interesting thing about this is that it's not entirely wrong but the framing on it is a bit weird. Things were definitely different back when this person was probably originally looking for work but my mother specifically taught me growing up that whenever she was getting work that the one thing she would have to do is get back in touch with people who she is trying to work for.
I was explicitly told that one of the things that I had to do with tester the people who I am applying with to make sure that they are indeed looking at my application. This was my mother's version of pull myself up on my bootstraps and hit the pavement. Grant you my mother was born in the seventies.
And while yes I agree that wages are fundamentally different than they used to be and pay and benefits are definitely different than they used to be you can't compare things to how they were before. Between inflation and various amounts of red tape and legislation things are going to change.
And while yes it is more difficult to get a job now sometimes there are also far more jobs now in existence than there ever have been. More so a lot of those jobs do not pay dirt wages. There are also lots of different methods you can use to find work.
You have websites like monster.com, indeed.com, and other similar websites that are aggregates to help people find work. Also many cities often throw job fairs that help people get into the door of jobs like warehouse workers welders and other jobs where they can train you on site.
What's more outside of job fairs there are actual places like the company Manpower, that will actually contract you out to varying different jobs until one likes you and will take you on. There are resources on top of resources on top of resources that you can use to get work and I don't condemn a boomer for not knowing that.
However today is youth have a tendency to not understand that there are a lot of different avenues that are used to get work. And sometimes it'll be a job they know absolutely nothing about and be at a company they've never heard of. The issue however, is the fact that during the Boomer era it was super easy to just walk into a building walk up to a clerk and ask them for a application.
Honestly if I'm not mistaken most companies are still required to provide paper applications because not everybody has absolute access to the internet or good internet for that matter.
I don't think that their sentiment is wrong. But I think that a boomer trying to Trek into the job Force after having not been a part of it for a lengthy period of time is very much not understanding how things were for Gen x and older millennials. Because a lot of today's work and labor are easier generally speaking than they used to be.
Because things during the silent generation were not sunshine and rainbows. And a lot of the work they did back then was not OSHA compliant. Was extremely high risk. And was exceptionally difficult labor jobs. Mind you, those jobs do still exist. But between red tape and modern conveniences a lot of those jobs are not nearly as difficult.
His experience is less of a "yes things are harder", and more a lack of understanding of the generational Gap that he missed. The dynamic for applying to jobs changed significantly in the 80s and 90s. Even in the 00's. And like I mentioned before there are resources stacked on top of resources stacked on top of resources for people to get work.
It's just that a lot of people are not persistent enough or driven enough to go through the processes for that.

Meow meow, well I am back sorry for being gone for a while. I haven't been really doing Japanese any more and usually I blog when I am doing that. Well yesterday anyhow my 32 gig SD card came in the mail finally from eBay and today finally my 512 SD card came in the mail from Walmart.com. Both SD cards are now living in my game systems. One is in my Switch the 512 and the 32 gig is in my 3DS. The mail came early today but I guess I got over it and not let it bother me. You know I am in my 30's and I don't want to be well that old. I want to be young again. I just don't feel my age. I am Autistic and Bipolar. Meow I just want not a time machine to go back to the past because I don't want to go back to the past. I just want to look like a little boy again and still have the knowledge I have. Anyway I have been looking for work a couple days in a row now on Indeed.com. What I really want is to be myself again. I feel like I have to live up to my parents standards or whatever. When I lived alone for 5 years in apartment back years ago I could do what I want. I dressed like whatever I wanted. I also pretended heavily like I was a cat. I really don't get why I had to fall into deep depression and basically agreed to move back with my folks. Meow if anyone out there invented aka device to create a fountain of youth I would be number one to step up to volunteer. Anyway I am sorry that I went off in a tangent like that. I haven't really been writing anything lately. I went from stopping learning Japanese to looking for work. Meow I once thought I could look for places to live but $800 a month in this city for a place to live there's anything that cheap. It was nice when I lived in Cave Spring but now living in this city things are expensive. Meow it is kind of funny sad that I go between looking from work to looking for another place to live and nothing comes from it. Sigh. Maybe I should look again for a place to live just for the heck of it. Well that's about it for now. I probably will post more pictures. I haven't done that in a while. Until later bye.

Percy, you might wanna kick Stella's ass back to Indeed.com. While we get that everyone may not be the biggest fan of their boss - we do find the way that Stella speaks about Percy really interesting. Every time he comes up, Stella - frankly - seems like she couldn't care less. She has stated that a "job is a job", "he's fine", but that she "hasn't had an issue with him" at all. ... I guess that's better?
At one point, in a conversation with River, he joked that she worked for "blood money", and there wasn't a single defense.
The slightly more entertaining part of this conversation is the thoughts of 26-year-old rapper, Jordan Johnson. In a conversation with Stella about her online habits, this conversation happened:
[STELLA:] i work a decent amount, but theres a lot of car rides lol [JORDAN:] car rides to where? [JORDAN:] you're an assistant, right? [STELLA:] wherever he needs to go. [STELLA:] yeah, i work for percivial devereaux. [JORDAN:] oh he's scary ain't he [STELLA:] wym scary? [JORDAN:] he just strikes me as an OG [JORDAN:] like if i crossed him he'd be fucking up my whole life [STELLA:] oh probably. i mean, hes an old rich white dude. [STELLA:] but for an old rich white dude, hes okay. i haven't had an issue with him at all. [JORDAN:] what you mean is no issue yet [STELLA:] yeah, yet. he hasn't screamed at me or been weird or anything. [STELLA:] if shit gets weird i'll just leave lol [JORDAN:] even if he offered you a wad of cash? [STELLA:] no i'd still probably leave. [STELLA:] but i guess it depends on what he did? if he just snapped at me and then was like oh sorry. but if he screamed or was weird, i'd just quit. [JORDAN:] you got a higher threshold than me
We just thought it was a bit weird. We wonder if Percy knows his assistant cares so little?

What is the point?: Let’s start 2021 with an existential crisis.
Story time.
I teach a liberal studies class that I didn’t even take when I went to this same school. (I tested out with AP credits.)
So on the first day of class this semester, I asked my students why they were taking this class. I made it clear that “because I have to” is a completely acceptable answer. They did not disappoint in that category. In all fairness, that’s how a lot of my liberal studies and elective classes were picked as well.
Then it was my turn, and I had a far more articulate, thought out answer because I had the unfair advantage of knowing that the question would be posed ahead of time.
I teach post-secondary literature because storytelling is built into the human brain. It’s a universal activity. And in standard college prep K-12 we get taught all of this mainstream, pre-formulated literary theory. Now, that is absolutely necessary - to prepare you for the next step of then doing your own analysis.
We have to analyze stories all day long because of the aforementioned built-in story mode we have, whether the story is a movie plot, where your boyfriend says he was last weekend, or whether there are space lasers aimed at California. If you can’t process that information, you’re screwed.
Now, if we turn to my inner self, you will find not a confident woman of letters, but rather a terrified millenial who remembers when Tom sold MySpace for $580 million and still can’t believe that people give her money, actual US currency, to guide people in an activity that is overall beneficial but does not 1:1 correlate with a skill you’d find on an Indeed.com listing.
Yes, you are becoming a more complete human being with your gen ed requirements. Yes, you will be a far less insufferable employee and coworker. Good luck spinning that in your interview. I might have to turn you over to the Comm people for that one.
And what am I even doing? Modeling and giving opportunities for practice. Employing Socratic questioning. Exposing students to new things.
Hold on. I’m actually talking myself down. Cool.
I’m about to tell on myself a little bit. That Baurlein article? The angsty one bemoaning the loss of the idealistic, probably-never-all-that-real, mentor-mentee relationship? I feel that. I have a lot of difficulty with interpersonal relationships (unexpectedly deep moment), but man if I didn’t wish for more direct guidance in how to become what I wanted to be.
I was a little bit ready to throw hands with Drezner at the beginning of his rebuttal.
But he’s right. I know he’s right. The demographics have shifted, and we live in a very different social and economic landscape. It feels like the BA is the new high school diploma in a lot of ways.
Tiny digression: I found a job listing for a secretary position that required a BA and said something like “top 20 university preferred.” I died laughing and saved it. I’ll post it if I find it.
In our current world, post-secondary education is utilitarian, not a leisure activity. I remember reading The Help and being floored that girls would walk away from a university education to just get pregnant and organize toilet donations.
I just found out that my late grandmother went to college. If that woman ever had a job, I was never told. Meanwhile, in the year of our Lord 2021, I’m hyperventilating at the prospect of not immediately finding a job in my field. (CPCC, call me!)
My father is suggesting I learn computer coding. My mother keeps asking if it’s too late for med school. ($300 and four hours of my life “wasted” on the MCAT.) A lot of people theorize that my generation was the last one that went to college out of any sort of optimism. It’s bleak! I understand why I’ve got these kids reading Jane Austen purely out of obligation.
John Mulaney is not helping, by the way. (4:25 is your relevant clip. It stings.)
youtube
And after they read it, presuming they don’t lie to me and just Spark Note it, are we having a deep, meaningful conversation about the language and themes? Sure, if you consider an intimate gathering to be your thirty closest friends. Especially if only like three of those friends are chatty, and they’re all trying to talk to you instead of each other. In that context, the British mentor system described by Barre is a dream [and a source of anxiety (interpersonal difficulties, remember?)].
Every one of those anxious party guests has their own way of learning as well. Will I ever learn a Rubix cube by watching someone solve it or by reading an explanation? Absolutely not. I can make that unequivocal statement right now. I have to hold it, and I have to do it myself. But I still need a teacher. I just need the teacher to give me the steps and then step back and let me make a mess of the cube for a bit, step in if I’m going way too far in the wrong direction. The teacher is still necessary, though.
Maybe we need to go back to the one student, one teacher model. Like the Sith. That would really drive up tuition prices, though....

hey do u have any tips on getting a first job? i struggle pretty badly w social anxiety and i’ve kinda been putting it off for a while bc i’m scared i’ll mess up somehow and no one will hire me >_<
I'd first try to imagine somewhere you wouldn't mind working. I was always okay with coffee shops because I love coffee. As far as social anxiety, you can try to find a job that doesn't require tons of interaction with people! I used to work as a packer and I could go whole days without seeing a coworker. This might not be possible but it is worth trying for if you'd prefer it! Use indeed.com or look around your area for "help wanted" signs at the kinds of places that look decent. You can even call a shop and ask if they have any jobs open, if you're really excited about a local place.
As a side note, I also have really severe social anxiety, and after a couple weeks of working somewhere, it got more predictable and less scary for me. Getting a therapist/ discussing this process with a therapist helps, I had one who coached me through it emotionally.
So, the first step is getting a good resume and application. Resumes should sort of brag about you. They should list all your school, volunteer work, or really anything you've done. Your resume may be very small and that is okay!! Baby-sitting? Pet-sitting? Put literally anything on there that required responsibility. Look up examples of resumes online for formatting, but my advice here is to keep the design simple so the focus is on you. Most applications are online now -- I would recommend using a personal Gmail for employers to respond to (and one with a professional address).
It can take a really long time to get an interview after turning in an application and resume, so the sooner you turn in applications, the better. The applications are the easier part, imo, because then, someone might email you to set up an interview which will probably be Skype or a call during COVID. The key to an interview is look polished and be polite! You can answer practice questions beforehand (lots of these are online) or practice with friends/family. They will ask you lots of questions and you can just talk about yourself! Think of it as them wanting to get to know you. How would you describe yourself in the best light possible? If you really want the job, you may have to use some "fake" phrases (I admire your company, I'm happy to work with people, I look forward to hearing back, I would love working for you are good phrases). You do have to sort of put on a mask for the whole "I love your company and I love working" part because you are human. The goal is to get an offer. Because even if you decide you totally don't want to work there, you can say no and work somewhere else :)
To address your fear "I'm scared I'll mess up and no one will hire me," it will take a couple of tries. You might not get hired right away. And boy have I messed up interviews and said weird stuff!! It's part of the process. Persistence is key because the more you do it, the better you get at it! You just have to start and then keep going, even if an interview is bad. It has happened to everyone, I promise. And worst case scenario, you don't get hired but you gotta keep trying. Good luck out there!

Did I tell you guys that the restaurant I fought to keep working at that “laid me off” out of spite at the end of January (if they did have to lay someone off they could have picked anybody but first they cut my hours in HALF for 3 weeks and didn’t cut anyone else’s hours by even a minute, and then they laid me off, and they chose me because the head baker openly loathed me) is temporarily completely closed because of the coronavirus? And knowing the owner, I’d bet a lot that none of those people are getting paid a red cent until the restaurant reopens, if indeed it does reopen (as the owner is extremely prone to cutting his losses and closing unprofitable ventures at the first sign of trouble and getting all the money out from it that he can and paying the least severance/back pay/etc that he can possibly manage whether it’s strictly legal or not)
So the mighty power struggle between the head baker and me was all for nothing on both our parts—he’s not exactly advancing his career right now, and I doubt he’s even getting paid by the restaurant either.
I feel really really bad for my coworkers though, because they are good and kind people who work that shitty job, even though they’re getting paid below the minimum rate that their indeed.com ad promised they’d pay, because they need it. They’ve probably gone through a lot more strife now that the head baker got his favorite bullying target laid off—the fewer people that are around, the worse this dude gets—and they went through all that for—nothing, because the damn restaurant is not even open.

(p1) Hi, I'm writing because I feel there is no hope for me. I'm 30, I live at home where I get verbally mistreated (it was physical when I was younger.) I'm morbidly obese, agoraphobic, I literally didn't leave the house for a 2 year period and still rarely do. I have 0 friends and never had any except a few online ones who ditched me years ago. I was bullied constantly. I have self-harm marks all over my arms. I've NEVER had a job, or finished high school. I still almost never leave the house.
(p2) I’ve asked for help to learn to drive, but they tell me I can’t. I guess because they call me autistic and tell me I am not very smart and make jokes about me having ADHD. I took those comments seriously and they told me I was “looking for problems.” WHAT? I made the mistake of speaking with a few psychiatrists about it who shut me down because, in their words, I didn’t “look” like I had those issues. And that my parents had hard jobs so it made sense they would lash out at me.
(p3) I deal with other issues too like menorrhagia. A doctor had me do an ultrasound (this was like my 3rd one since ‘06) and sent me to a specialist because they saw something. The specialist said she didn’t think anything was there and wasn’t going to actually examine me. I gave up. I’m afraid to speak up for myself, I genuinely don’t understand how to live, make friends, talk to people. I feel like I just have TOO MANY issues. And at my age I don’t see why anyone would bother with me anymore.
(p4) I have an appt with a psych at the same place as the others because I have my city’s free insurance and nowhere else to go. I don’t know if I can do it again after this? I just wanted somewhere to reach out at least one more time :( I’ve reached out to others (like extended family) who will talk to me for a bit then ignore? I can’t help but to feel damaged or like I’m doing something wrong I can’t figure out. I feel like a weak loser and I didn’t try good enough.I’m sorry this is so long
Hello Anon,
I’m mod Bee and I’ll do my best to help you out, but I received help myself from the other mods to write you back. So this is a communal effort!
Thank you for reaching out, and I’m sorry you’re going though such a difficult and distressing situation. You sound strong and tenacious, and I’m proud of you for the way you keep trying to improve your life.
We have some suggestions that we hope can be of help. They’ll concerne:
finding online communities/groups to hang out with
finding a professional that suits your needs
looking for courses you can join
thinking about possible job options
Just an head up: this is going to be long, and it will contain tons of links. I’ll highlight one - that I think it’s most useful - for each section, but I suggest you to go through them all.
1. finding online communities/groups to hang out with
Having friends is important for our mental health, but it can get difficult to make new ones, especially when we’ve been burned before.
Online communities, forums, and groups, can be good places to start looking for friends again. You can approach them with as much caution as you need, and find those people you relate with the most.
If you like games, and rpgs in particular, there are online options that allow you to connect with other others all over the world. Activities like Dungeon&Dragons are based around players’ interactions, so you’d get to know people without putting the stress on forging new friendships. The article 10 Best Online Chat Rooms & Games suggests other equally fitting games.
Forums and groups where you can share your experience and fears are another important tool you can use. I’ve looked into active ones and found Panic Disorder and Agoraphobia Forum, r/Agoraphobia/ (on reddit), bus (a self-harm support forum), Mental health support group and discussion community, Online Support Groups by Turn2Me, PsychForums (Psychology and Mental Health Forums), and the ReachOut app.
Trying with pen pals - a one on one exchange - could also be a good idea: InterPals and PenPalWorld are only two of the many websites dedicated to this purpose. Here’s some tips on how it works.
Finally, there are apps with the specific purpose of finding new friends, like Bumble BFF. Try to see if you there’s one of your liking in this list.
2. finding a professional that suits your needs
We usually recommend what it’s colloquially called “psychiatrist/therapist shopping”, the act of choosing a professional after inquiring what we need to know of their line of work, based on our own wishes, and asking this to more than one.
It’s difficult when insurance covers just a little portion of professionals, but not impossible.
Can’t afford therapy? No insurance? Need low cost options? Here is a great list of ways to get help when money or insurance is an issue.
Therapy For Every Budget: How To Access It
9 Ways to Get Free or Cheap Therapy When You Don’t Have Health Insurance
Dial 211 for Essential Community Services: if you call 211, you can ask about free therapy options in your area, or how to work with you insurance to afford other professionals.
If none of these options work out, and you have to stick with the professional your insurance provides, there are measures you can take that might help making the sessions successful. Check out 21 Tips for getting the most out of each therapy session and How to Talk to Your Doctors When They Don’t Listen.
If your new psychiatrist tries to dismiss you without hearing everything that you have to say, insist that they write on your record exactly what they did and why, and that you absolutely want a copy of it before you exit their room. It’s your right to have both your requests accomplished. I know it’s not easy to have them respected: you’ll probably have to stand your ground and that can be difficult, but I think it’s important for you and fundamental for what you can get out of this session. This is a post with links to various module you can complete to help you assert yourself, which I suggest you to start before going to your appointment, if you can. It can be useful to face your family, too.
Does your insurance cover a different specialist for the gynecological problem your doctor wanted you to check out? Is there any free or low-cost clinic near you, like Planned Parenthood or Free Clinic? You can inquire about their services through email.
3. looking for courses you can join
Online courses can be helpful for a number of things, like keeping busy, learning new stuff, feeling accomplished, and possibly getting some qualifications.
There are some free options that end with a proper certificate, but not all are accredited, meaning that they’re not automatically accepted by employers (they can choose to consider them valid or not). Still, there are no downsides in joining such a course, seeing that it doesn’t cost anything but your time.
Not accredited certificates/no certificates:
Alison’s Diploma Courses and Certificate Courses
FutureLearn doesn’t grant you certificates with their free courses, but it still provides learning access
edX’s Courses
Udemi, not free but it offers up to 90% discounts generally once a month
Learn how to code, a masterpost that lists different courses to learn coding
Free Online Language Courses, a masterpost that lists different courses to learn languages
24 Invaluable Skills To Learn For Free
Accredited certificates
coursera offers some free courses, and/or the possibility to apply for financial aid
Online Degree require no tuition, no applications, and no interviews, and has worked so participating Universities around the country will consider the courses for credit, potentially finishing up to an entire freshman year of college
edX’s Professional Certificate Programs are not free, but edX offers up to a 90% discount to those who prove they cannot pay a full price.
University Of The People is tuition-free, which means there is no charge for teaching or instruction, only initial fees (around 160$) for each course. You can also apply for scholarships.
on StudyPortal - Scholarships, you can find a huge number of scholarships available in your country, and here you can find the easiest scholarships to apply to. There are also scholarships for online courses.
There’s also the possibility of completing high school through virtual courses, and if they’re organized by your State’s public school system, they should be free. You can find more info on this here.
4. thinking about possible job options
Working towards finding a job is important for our own self-worth and feeling like a valuable member of society, and of course it can also help with looking for better therapy.
It can be tricky when mental and physical illnesses are at play, though. That’s why I’d like to give you some online options here, too, that don’t ask for any particular prerequisite, and would give you enough free time to focus to get better. Jobs like data entry or app testing are doable from home, and may not pay much, but they’d allow you to start building some savings.

i just realized its been a little over a year since I graduated and had to pull my shit together to find a job. heres some tips if anyone feels a little lost and some examples from my own struggles.
start with your cv! whether you’re applying for a summer internship program or fresh outta uni trying to figure out how you’re supposed to navigate the job market, start with your cv. take every little thing you’ve ever done and construct something out of it! look at any extracurriculars youve done or any interests and skill you’ve picked up over the years and figure out. i literally got my foot in the door because i learned how to read html/css on tumblr so i kinda dropped it in my interests and mentioned it in my interview and im pretty sure it gave me a bit of an edge for getting the position.
window shop a little! there are so many jobs and job expectations out there! take a look around and familiarize yourself. getting yourself acquainted with the market and the language that people use is super important and can help you go back and polish up your cv to fit it. I struggled with this a little bit myself. I went to uni in canada but came back to hk so the entry position names and the terms that they used for recruiting was pretty different (idk if its the same for other places but uhhh like in hk all the entry level/fresh grad positions are ‘executive’ positions lmao which i did not know). i would say definitely try to figure out key terms or skills that will make it easier to filter your search.
dont preemptively disqualify yourself! apply to jobs that you dont think you’re fully qualified for. literally. actually. apply. im not saying like shoot for the something unreasonable. but dont be turned off by postings that expect more years or more experience than you have. dont disqualify yourself before you even get the chance to try. the worst that could happen is you dont get a response. the best that could happen is you get called in for an interview. either or its still just another part of the process! everyones gotta start somewhere with experience so just give yourself the chance to get some.
alter your cv’s and cover letters! everyone says it. actually do it. have one basic cv that has everything on it. thats your building block and probably the cv you can use to send out to general jobs that youre kinda interested in but really just shooting your shot just to try. when you see a job you’re really interested in or really fits a certain skill or background that you have then create another cv that accentuates those skills! you gotta mold yourself a little to fit the image that the person whose hiring you is looking for. tailor your cover letters a little to the company and the job posting and align yourself for the position. its the same concept as buying the right shoes for the right sports. youre not gonna wear converse to a 100m sprint. and youre not gonna send him some generic cover letter to a job youre really aiming for.
make a spreadsheet! i literally applied to so many jobs that i couldnt keep track without the spreadsheet. it was helpful for if i got a call for an interview and had to go back to reference what the exact expectations for the post was. mine looked like this (company; position applied for; location; date applied; where i found it; a response column; and a details column that linked to the job posting’) but for sure tailor yours to your own job search. [yes i applied to like almost 150 jobs but yknow most were just shots in the dark for shits and giggles]
dont necessarily take the first job you hear back from! congrats maybe you got an interview and got an offer! don’t be scared to say no. unless its a job that you know you’re really gunning for and super interested in, i wouldnt advise to settle if you can afford not to. the tip i gave my friend was to think about whether or not you still wanted to look for other jobs when you receive the offer. i know this is a luxury not everyone can decide to take but if you can then do so. if you cant afford the extra search time, then take the job as a learning opportunity. like i said before everyone has to start somewhere if theyre gaining experience.
give yourself a break.. dudes its hard to transition out of a system thats been guiding you since you essentially knew how to write your name. if you get the chance give yourself a break and dont continually get stressed about this. take a breather, schedule some time outta your day. if youre trying then a job will come. the right one.
edit: i wanted to also add some general places to look at for postings
linkedin / indeed.com - both let you create cv’s, job search, save jobs youre interested in, and quick apply. theyre good places to start just cause there’s so many postings. dont just look at the jobs, look at the companies and sister companies.
go directly to a company you’re interested in - if youve got an interest in working with a certain person or company, literally go to the website and see if theres a hiring/contact/linkedin for the company and directly apply there. send a email! there’s bound to be a way to contact them (lmao respectfully pls)
check out some university job boards - some are public, or if youve just graduated there might still be access for you. my uni also had a ‘jobs’ facebook page. dont forget about alumni groups if your school might have one. alumni groups are literally made for you to connect and try to open opportunities.
graduateland / angellist / jobsdb (if ur in asia) - check out the smaller more ‘boutique’ places that are more tailored to ur geo or interests. like for example angellist is mostly for startups and smaller companies.
#job tips#no one asked for advice but here is some#i had no help but google when i was job searching outta uni#if you want help like im here for you my dudes#joyce voice#this feels generic#but yknow im also self indulging for possible future self unemployment#lmao also just thought about how some of ya'll are yung and have a while to go before these worries#enjoy ur time kiddos

It took us a while, but we’ve finally made it to the smiles! (That sounds like the story of my life, in fact.)
So, as I mentioned in the prequel to this drawing, I believe that mothering counts as a full-time job -- raising children, taking care of a home, cooking meals, etc. requires more skills and experience than you’ll find on any job posting on Indeed.com. In other words, it takes a special kind of woman, and if you ask me, someone like Sayori fits the bill perfectly. The question is, how does a mother get paid? In a number of ways, actually, the most obvious of which can be seen on Mother’s Day: appreciation.
The Sayori family’s back, and doing Mother’s Day right! (I haven’t gotten around to picking a last name for them, but I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it.) While she wasn’t looking, Sayori’s husband and kids prepared a surprise for her in their living room!
In case you’re new to the children I invented for Sayori and DDLC’s protagonist (whom I’ve named Haruki), or in case you just forgot about them, here’s a quick recap:
On Sayori’s right, we see their son Hiroto smiling at his mom and holding another one of his Chogokin toys...
...on her left is their young artist Reina holding a tiny stuffed cat and pointing out a doodle she made on her mother’s card...
...and on Haruki’s lap is their youngest child, Nanako...doing her thing. X )
Meanwhile, their dad is wearing a sincere smile as he gazes upon one of the most beautiful sights he knows.
Namely, the sweet smile of his childhood friend and wife.
And if you know about everything she went through to get to this moment in her life, I defy you not to smile yourself. : )
Like many people, Sayori is the kind of person who isn’t sure what to do when so much appreciation comes at her all at once -- a gift from her husband, a delicious cupcake, and a card signed by her husband and two oldest children, with a message so sweet that it instantly warms her heart (and face). I thought about drawing some tears of joy in her eyes, but I figured those would probably come a little later. After getting past the first wave of heartfelt emotion, she’d eventually put down the card and give Hiroto and Reina a hug and a sincere “thank you” before finally opening her present. There’s not much else you can do in that situation, after all. X )
Oh, yeah...and guess where the cupcake came from?
So, besides depicting a happy moment for adult Sayori and Haruki (one among many others, of course), this picture is meant to illustrate the rewards that come with being a good parent. One, as already mentioned, is appreciation, but another is a family that finds joy in seeing others smile, especially if it happens to be a member of that family. Hiroto, for example, could be spending his time doing something outdoors or playing a video game, but he doesn’t mind putting it off in order to see his mom react to her Mother’s Day surprise. Then there’s Reina, who could hardly wait to see what she thought about her drawing. As for Nanako, I’m sure she’d be smiling too if she knew what was going on. ; )
In short, Sayori and Haruki’s parenting has paid off in a number of ways, and now Sayori is enjoying a special moment where she gets to reap the rewards -- appreciation, love, and kids who care about making others happy. Not to mention the good effects that’ll have on society as a whole, buuuuut I’m getting ahead of myself.
The biggest challenge in this drawing was getting all five characters from the previous drawing to look about the same in their proportions, hairstyles, colors, etc., but I seem to have pulled it off somehow. Sayori’s expression was based on a similar one made by her younger self:
Reina and Nanako’s looks are modeled respectively after Non Non Biyori’s Komari and Renge, as you might remember. In this drawing, Reina’s outfit is also modeled after one of Komari’s...
...while Nanako’s adorable finger-sucking pose is based on Renge’s pose in what might be my favorite scene from the show:
You may notice I decided to replace the note on her bib with a sun. It just seemed appropriate for a child of Sayori’s. ; ) (Man, I can’t stop using emojis today.)
And there you have it -- smiles all around! Just one of them makes up for a thousand tears, in my opinion. Now, go share some of your own!

ehehhee breakdown time - bitching into the void bc i can’t be bothered to make a vent blog . thats it.
i’ve spent the whole day trying and failing to write any kind of ucas personal statement and i . i do not know the kind of person i want to be because i’m so terrified of failure.
the ed has come back with a vengeance & i have zero constructive things that i Want to do and im currently functioning on the level of if i don’t want to do it for layers of reasons i sit down and stare blankly into the void for 4 hours.
so bad day all round.
i don’t know if i’d even like an english lit degree environment because i love fiction and engaging with fiction probably more than anything. it’s all i’ve ever done consistently. but so help me god if i walk into an english degree and it’s like my politics degree environment. i don’t think i could do it. god it’s awful and like, of course i care about politics because im a human being in a society - i have to. but there are Far better people to talk about local campaign groups with because it’s not my cup of tea. i don’t get it. i really don’t. i tried - and i didn’t like it
god this is all so contingent on even being let into universities - i have 2 a levels, an as level and a pass at grade 8 rad ballet. no uni with a decent eng lit degree will let me within 500 ft.
a large part of all of this is that i’m very exceedingly shit at building or sustaining personal or professional relationships. period. im categorically not. im genuinely shit at it
and i know all the millions of reasons why and i know i need to change but every time i send a text i don’t /do it/.
god at 17 i was an annoying little shit and i know that, and everyone who met me at 17 knows that, and i Know i really needed to be taken down a peg. but i’m nothing like i was at 17 - apart from rather fucking depressed - and i don’t know why my stepmother keeps trying to teach me i’m still full of myself and being horrible. god i wish i was joking about the anime comment the other day but i heard the words ‘isn’t ‘anime’ just about little girls? a lot of it’s awful content, awful. i can’t believe you watch it’ ‘oh well you know, its just for old men wanted to get off, all schoolgirl fantasies and that’ leveled at me across the kitchen table and i’m not good at memory retention but that’s seared into my fucking soul. (it was saved by her son bringing up ponyo and it filtered out from there but . we all bloody know what she said.
she also asked me if i wanted to throw ‘a comic con party’ for my birthday, and like my dad can tell me it’s just her trying to be nice and engage with me but fucking hell, does she know im not 7 years old . i’ve tried thinking the best of her and i’ve tried not thinking the worst of her and i’ve changed my behavior and stopped reacting and . i still get the pointy end of the stick. the accusations and the needling critique . im tired.
which, i don’t want her approval. i don’t want her love or for her to treat me like a daughter or whatever nonsense my last counselor tried to sell me. i want her to stop attacking my every action or comment. im tired. im really tired.
i Know i’ve stupidly priviledged i cant spell that word, i know. i live at home. i haven’t got a job - ive been searching since mid august. nothing. only a nightclub that was 20 layers of suicidal ideation in a can and a food retail position that fell through. nothing. i have literally exhausted whole pages of indeed.com and i am so so tired. and im lucky that my survival doesn’t depend on this. i live with my parents. they give me bus money. it’s idyllic and im going up the wall failing to be independent.
there is. so much more to this but im really tired and i’m not asking for like. advice or anything, if you read this far. im just bitching into the void because my brain is tired . also yeah, i know i need therapy. ohh god do i need therapy
#my god my mental health is shite#dw im seeing my gp#in other news i still don't get along with my step mother#: - )

Impacts of Social Media on Job Searching and Careers by Hunter Gordon
It’s hard to remember there was ever a world before social media. If I told my father that my office has a Snapchat filter, he’d probably think it was a new, fancy filter for brewing coffee in the communal kitchen. From the way you begin looking for a job in college to your happiness in your career, the game has changed. Some for the better. Some for the worse. I could probably write blog posts on each of these individual areas, but here are some of the main topics that I find most interesting.
Affects on the job search
A simple Google search saying “finance jobs in Boston” returns 104 million page results. After sponsored ads and indeed.com, the next link is for LinkedIn. In my opinion, LinkedIn is a valuable tool when starting out the job search. If you find a company or job you really like, you can see if you are connected to anyone at that specific company or with a similar role. If not, there is a good chance you are only one or two degrees separated and can figure out how to make a conversation happen quickly. Back in the day, this process would probably mean either whipping out the rolodex or calling around to friends until you find that mutual connection. From there, you must hope someone is willing to schedule time to have a conversation with you. With LinkedIn, this can all be done in minutes.
However, I think this tool has diminished some of the major benefits of building out a network and meaningful relationships. It is very easy to click a button and send a request that “builds your network.” You don’t even have to add a message. It’s much more challenging to meet face-to-face and really leave an impact with someone. Online, you can design yourself to be someone completely different. This also poses a challenge for employers sifting through profiles and resumes.
Additionally, the information that is available through crowd-sourced reviews and surveys on these social platforms allow candidates to understand potential salary, benefits, the interview process, and a company’s culture before even hitting the apply button. This gives candidates increased power and allows for better preparation in interviews.
Are employers looking at profiles?
The answer is “yes.” CareerBuilder conducted a survey of recruiters and HR professionals in which 51% said they have declined candidates based on their social media profiles. They named reasons like drug use, inappropriate names, discriminatory posts, and inappropriate pictures as reasons they have turned away candidates. At the same time, 33% said they have considered a candidate due their profiles. Social media presence can say a lot. To me, much of it is like an email. The tonality is hard to depict. Something you may think is a funny joke to your friends could be offensive to your potential employer.
While social media profiles can hinder ability to get hired, it can also greatly set people apart from the pack. I’ve seen resumes where people have links to their personal blogs and publications. This can say a lot about the values of the person and how they value their professions and interests. Additionally, it can give you a sneak peak into the levels of effort and passion they put into their work. This isn’t something people typically include, so it can really set someone apart when they are using social media to boost their professional advantage.
Does Social Media Affect Loyalty?
I believe it greatly affects company loyalty. Here’s an example: you’ve been at your desk grinding away for the past 8 hours. You get a notification on your phone. It’s a snapchat of your friend who is playing corn toss in the office with a beer in their hand. And you know they just bought a new car! You think to yourself, what on earth am I doing here? That thought sticks with you for a bit until your work slacks and you decide you are going to leave. I would say people may even have FOMO (Fear of Missing Out).
I think social media is great to provide us with the data and platforms to be able to make educated decisions about our career. However, I believe the impact that social media has had a negative impact on what the “ideal” job is. It makes us constantly compare ourselves to our networks. It’s natural to want to have what you consider a better job, make more money, better work-life balance, etc. I see it as a bummer when people are willing to sacrifice careers, or at the bare minimum have an impact on their effectiveness in role, in a chase for the best Instagram post.
From an employer perspective, they need to cater to this. Almost every company has some sort of hashtag along the lines of “LifeAtCompanyName” to post tweets and pictures about how great working at their company is.
I imagine that some of these are embellished. And some of the events are put on solely for the photo opportunity so recruiters can better market their product, the company. The positive side is that businesses have a much greater visibility and are forced to provide a positive and thriving culture. If not, with the amount of research that is done by potential candidates via social media, they will lose out on top talent to competitors.
Social media is a powerful tool both while searching for jobs as well as happiness in careers. It has given us the access to information to make the best decisions for our futures. There are areas to watch out for and be careful of, but it is a powerful tool that has changed the job market.

I’ve been looking through various employment positions on Indeed.com today.
Trying such search terms as “warehouse”, “work independently”, “work alone”, etc in the hopes of finding something where I can just focus directly on the job independent of whether I have social energy in a given moment.
But unfortunately most of these keep turning up jobs that are actually all about people skills, multi-tasking, customer service, and other concentration-incompatible tasks. One of the results turned up by “work alone” was for a gym that said:
If you are an open and friendly people-person, this may be the job for you. If you wish people would stop staring at you and just leave you alone… this is probably not going to work.
CALLED OUT
But seriously - what kind of jobs do exist for those of us who wish people would stop staring at us and just leave us alone during work? I’ve already earmarked a couple that might allow this, but more lines of investigation would help. I know I can contribute economic value and can benefit the world - I just don’t think I can do it through interpersonal interaction day in and day out. Aren’t there roles that function without that?
It would be nice if I could find one that was a good fit for me and let me contribute long term. But short of that I would be happy with one with low entry requirements that allowed me to support myself long enough to get my programming proficiency back up, and then get a software job.

Hey. So I don’t know who to ask but here goes. For the last five years, I’ve been depressed so much that I shut down. I haven’t finished college and I’m 27. I also haven’t had a job for most of my life. My family has been amazing and supported me. I’ve recently been getting better and am applying to return to school. I’ve also wanted to apply for a job. The thing is, no one wants someone who has no experience or degree. Do you know where I could apply and get a job?
hmmmm, I can try and help as best as I can!
first off tho, I am super proud of you for recovering from depression and getting back into school and stuff, like that’s amazing and I feel you. and I’m also glad that you’ve got family that’s got your back, that’s awesome.
I know that retail and food service positions are good starting points to get some job experience to start building up a resume for more options. they’re known for taking on folk that don’t have a lot of job experience, so you’ll probably have some opportunities there, ‘cause they’re known to have a lot of entry positions.
it’s summer now, too, so that means there should be more temporary summer positions open so you can get your feet wet and get more comfortable in the working world.
PLUS temporary positions are good so you’ll be able to build up a little money and then be able to put all your focus when school comes around, when you get into the college you want.
my advice is to go to a job website -my go to is indeed.com- and just start looking at some entry positions in your area, feel around until you see an opportunity that feels right!
just put in applications, follow up after you apply, and don’t give up. DON’T GIVE UP. coming from experience, job hunting is a pain in the ass, but don’t lose heart!!
I hope this helps, even a little. good luck with work and school!!! let me know when you get into college and when you get hired!! I’m cheering you on!

Students: I Challenge You to Earn an Extra $1000/Year
Very excited to be sharing this guest post by Tom from This Online World on side hustles and earning extra income. A fellow student all the way in Canada who’s passionate about online marketing, passive income and even crypto! He has a great hustle mindset and his website has a lot of good info on money hacking and earning a bit more $$ – you gotta check him out.
The article is written in dollar signs $$, but simply change the currency and it works just as well. What’s important is the idea!
Starting your own side hustle is one of the coolest ways to increase your income: it’s basically growing your own little money baby.
However, when it comes to the actual work, it can be difficult to know when or how to start. From finding extra time to securing side hustle opportunities, getting the ball rolling on your extra income generation journey requires time and some thought.
For students, it can be especially difficult to find the time or correct side hustle opportunity. Assignments and exams can occupy most of your day, and the nature of student life often equates to a less than stable financial situation.
I am currently in my last year college, and I’ve certainly had my share of cheap beer, instant Ramen, and a lonely bank balance.
However, whether you are in school or employed, wealthy or just making ends meet, skilled in a craft or a complete novice, it is possible to start a successful side hustle that makes you an extra $1,000 a year.
Don’t believe me?
Well, here’s the mindset I want you to approach this side hustle challenge with:
You have 12 months in a year to make an extra $1,000.
That means you only have to make about $85/month of additional income with your side hustles.
When you think about making an extra $1,000 a year as only having to earn an extra $85 a month, it doesn’t seem so daunting.
Personally, I take 1-2 days out of every month to dedicate towards my various side hustles.
It doesn’t matter if you take on a variety of side hustles or stick to a single job. As long as you take an active approach to making more money and stick to a plan, you can succeed.
Let’s take a look at 12 possible side hustle ideas that you can do once a month to make an extra $1,000 a year.
Idea 1: Content Writing Gigs
I’m a staunch supporter of working online to earn extra money, and content writing is always my first recommendation (especially for students).
Content writing can expand your skill set and open the doors for future employment or freelance opportunities (looks great on a CV!). Additionally, content writing jobs are often remote and have incredibly flexible working hours.
I’ve written content throughout my college years, and there are a number of ways to approach securing a content writing side hustle:
Look on job posting websites for companies that are seeking freelance writers (Indeed.com, LinkedIn, Monster.ca are some great ones).
Post your own advertisement on your local job boards or online marketplaces. Offer your content writing services to local businesses in your area!
Create gigs on online websites like Fiverr. There are many freelance writers who use Fiverr to generate income, and most price their content at $5-$10 for every 500 words of content.
Most content writing jobs won’t require you to be an English major or have an extensive portfolio. As long as you are a decent writer, you should be able to find work that pays between $10-$15/hour without a problem!
Idea 2: Get Busy with TaskRabbit
Let’s face it: no one really enjoys chores. However, every job someone doesn’t feel like doing is another side hustle opportunity that can make you some quick side income!
TaskRabbit was started to provide a secure task-based marketplace. By becoming a Tasker on TaskRabbit, you can set your own hours and choose to complete various tasks people are requesting for payment.
Common tasks on TaskRabbit include:
Yardwork.
Moving and packing services.
Furniture assembly.
Home improvement.
General handyman services.
The work you complete on TaskRabbit won’t be glamorous, but it typically pays well (and you are able to set your pay range). Chances are, you could spend a few hours helping someone move or do some yard work and easily walk away with $100+.
Idea 3: Food Delivery
Whether you work for Just Eat, Skip the Dishes, Grub Hub, Uber Eats, Deliveroo or some other delivery service, making money by delivering food is a simple but effective method for making some extra cash.
If your car isn’t too old, simply register to be a part-time delivery driver for a popular delivery service in your town.
You can set your own hours, and it will only take you a few deliveries to make your monthly target of $85. Depending on your town, people might tip slightly more or less, but a single night of work should help you reach that $1,000 a year goal.
Idea 4: Help your Landlord
3 college buddies and I moved into the most grungy, decrepit old student house around town when we started school.
However, part of me is really glad we did. Besides the fact that student living can be hilariously awful, I was also able to find some odd jobs and make a few extra hundred dollars simply by asking my landlord if he needed help.
Hiring professional painters, repairmen, garbage removers, or cleaning services is expensive.Hiring desperate students is not.
Trust me when I say landlords always have projects on the go. Whether you are currently renting or not, finding occasional work for fixer-upper projects is not difficult. Reach out to landlords or look online, and spend a day painting, tearing up carpet, fixing holes in the wall, or cleaning a place.
You can earn an easy $100-$150 for a day of work, and you’ll probably walk away with a newfound appreciation for your own home.
Idea 5: Busk
If you play an instrument or can sing fairly well, busking might be the right side hustle for you!
My housemate and I spent several weekends playing guitar on the street corner of our local downtown scene. We’re ok players, so busking provides us with a great way to bond, practice our songs, and also earn a simple $20-$30/each for a few hours of enjoyable music.
You don’t have to be an incredible musician to busk. However, you will need the ability to get over stage fright. Personally, I prefer busking with my friend since I don’t really want to go alone. But I still find busking to be an enjoyable way to make extra money for something that I would do for free anyway.
Just make sure your town or city doesn’t require a permit to busk (or obtain a permit if you need to).
Idea 6: Tutor
Have you ever looked back at high school/elementary homework and realized just how easy it is (shout out to our developed, adult brains).
Well, if your town or city has a few high schools nearby, chances are you can find some part time work tutoring students in math, science, or languages. In my school, tutors were regularly paid $15-$25/hour by parents, especially in more advanced subjects like calculus or chemistry.
If you have a knack for school and enjoy helping others, tutoring might be the right side hustle for you! Plus, most tutoring sessions only last 1-3 hours, so you can make some quick and easy side income without spending too much time!
Idea 7: Babysit
If you like babies and kids, babysitting is an excellent way to make extra money every month. Half the time the kid will be sleeping, so you’re pretty much getting paid to do nothing. Sounds like a dream!
Popular websites like SitterCity have made working as a babysitter (in the U.S.) incredibly easy. However, if you aren’t a U.S. resident, you can always post your own advertisements on local job boards or just ask around town.
Many of my college friends have been babysitters throughout their life, and it’s a great way to make additional income. Even if you only work for 1 family, you can probably make $85 a month from babysitting once or twice (depending on the length of the job).
Idea 8: Drive with Uber or Lyft
This is a similarly straightforward idea to delivering food (except you’re delivering people). If you have a car that meets Uber or Lyft’s requirements, you can just drive one day of every month and make extra money.
Uber or Lyft might not be a great long term solution due to variability in available rides and the hidden cost of every kilometer you drive (repairs, oil changes, wear and tear), but it isn’t a bad side hustle to do once in a while.
Ideally schedule your driving session around a busy time where you can benefit from surcharges!
Idea 9: AirBnB
I have two friends who have been dating for a couple of years and live in an apartment together. Their place has 2 bedrooms, so once in a while they rent out one of the rooms on AirBnB for the weekend to make some extra cash.
They don’t particularly enjoy having company over, so they usually schedule their AirBnB weekends around times they won’t be home often or there’s an event in town that their visitor will most likely be attending. In any case, it’s an incredibly straightforward way to make $200+ for a weekend of hosting.
If you live in a major city, using AirBnB to make some extra money every month should be even easier. All you need is a decent space, price level, and advertisement on AirBnB.
Idea 10: Reddit ForHire
Reddit is an incredible community, and also presents budding entrepreneurs and side-hustlers with money making opportunities.
r/forhire is one of my favorite subreddits, and it’s exactly what it sounds like: a job marketplace. Users can either post ‘hiring’ or ‘for hire’ posts that outline specific work and skills that are being sought after or offered.
Some of the most popular jobs on Reddit For Hire are:
Graphic design.
Programming.
Content writing.
Video editing.
Tutoring (especially in languages).
Advertising/marketing consulting.
If you have experience in any of these field or have another service to offer, definitely check out Reddit!
Idea 11: Dog Walking
It’s funny how many people buy an adorable companion only to realize they don’t ever want to actually walk it.
Dog walking, like babysitting, is a great way to make extra income just by taking care of a living thing. If you are good with dogs and enjoy the outdoors, consider walking dogs once or twice a month!
Popular dog walking apps include:
WagWalking.
Swifto (New York City only).
Rover.
Care.
coolest side hustle IMO
Idea 12: Slogan Slinger
While this isn’t a concrete side hustle, I couldn’t resist including something fun in this list.
Slogan Slingers is a website where companies request ideas for their next great slogan and have users deliver them the answer to earn money. For example, a plumbing company might post a contest for $250 that explains what kind of slogan they’re looking for, and users can submit up to 3 entries to try to win.
If you win, you get the money. If you lose, nothing happens! The website isn’t incredibly popular, but there is usually a new contest available every other day. 1,000-2,000 people usually enter a contest, but if you have a knack for marketing, it could be a fun website to visit.
I’ve only been slogan slinging for 1 month and haven’t won anything yet, but I plan to keep at it!
Okay, What’s an Extra $1,000?
You might be wondering what’s the point of working side jobs to earn an extra $1,000 a year, but you’d be surprised at how much you can accomplish with an extra $1,000 in your bank account.
Thinking of investing, but never had enough saved up to take the first steps? Use your thousand dollars.
Want to help ease the sting of utility bills and rent? Use your extra thousand dollars.
Or, want to start your own business but need a bit of extra cash to start out? Well, you now have an extra thousand dollars.
I hope you have found this side hustle challenge to be inspiring and provide some effective job opportunities to get started! As long as you take active, baby steps towards generating additional income, you can easily reach a goal of an additional $1,000/ear or surpass it completely.
Best of luck in your side hustle journey!
