LAST SHOT - first meet
Tumblr media Tumblr media
synopsis : interning at a random ship in space sounds like a great idea for your paper. don't you think? part -> 1 | other chapters -> 2 3 ?
characters : anya, swansea, daisuke, curly, jimmy, gn!reader (daisuke x reader if u squint)
content : filler. lots of filler. lots of people being people. the series is sort of a fix it fic (?) only warning is mention of.. jimmy... eugh
wc : 3.4k+
before you read, reader is : cold, non expressive, and a psychology major...
close to an oc.. but also not an oc? features of the reader is never described, and i wrote it as gender neutral as possible
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- you were an intern in the pink pony express.
- .. more specifically, a university student with honours in their bachelor's degree in psychology. you did plan on going back to get a masters once you're done with this internship. the pay wasn't much, but since it covered your living expenses for a year, and since the internship being valid enough to put into a research paper (after confirming there's psychological tests in the ship) you say this wouldn't be so bad.
- ..or so you thought.
Tumblr media
- the first day you boarded the ship, you were baffled by the lack of security measures of what, or what you can't bring to the spaceship. sure there were manuals, but the actual boarding of the ship? no security, at all.
- you knew the conditions that the company puts their employees in from online forums.. so you tried to prepare beforehand with a backpack. woo! (it took you hours to recount your basic needs)
- you managed to sneak on board your little backpack (it was huge) and thankfully, you managed to stash it away in your room before anyone else noticed.
- .. and thankfully the directions were easy to read as well, otherwise you'd be lost.
- you don't want to bring all that around the tour of the ship either, so this would be the most efficient solution.
- pretending to be waiting in front of the ship unnoticed was also easy. however, imagine the surprise when another intern trips into the spaceship, last second.
- the captain - you find his name to be curly, only managed to give you a brief welcome, before asking the nurse of the ship - she introduced herself as anya - to show you around.
Tumblr media
- whilst going around, the other intern tried to start conversations with you. which briefly went as follows:
Tumblr media
"hey! my name's daisuke, yours?"
"y/n."
"woah! cool name!"
"..."
"..not much of a talker...it seems... hehe.."
Tumblr media
- you only nod in response.
- anya seems to have read the room, and immediately guided you away to introduce you to two other people instead. swansea the mechanic, and jimmy, the copilot.
- however the atmosphere persisted. you stayed in silence most of the time. daisuke was close to starting another conversation with you, but seemed to back out last second.
- you feel rather bad for being cold towards him. but your body is way too exhausted to respond. maybe you should’ve brought some painkillers as well..
- ... or perhaps you could pay off your sleep debt on this trip as well. ahh… a faithful wish..
Tumblr media
- that aside, you also found out you would be interning under anya. she was soft spoken, and overall, you have a feeling that you wouldn't mind sticking by her side for the next.. year.. or so.
- having a singular nurse for a 6-man crew isn't too bad. but now with her teaching you the basics, you think that you’re capable of taking some of her responsibilities. (you're glad to take some weight off her back)
- you agreed on weekly psych checks with the crew (much to swansea’s and jimmy’s dismay) so you’re ready to keep your journal very, very filled.
- the routine was simple. you'd wake up, check your stash of items which included - airtight sealed snacks which consisted of a lot of sweets, your journal, a lot of thrifted power banks for your ds to charge on, your ds of course, a taser, a gun, and a personal emotional support voicemail on one of your mp3 player - then go into the lounge for breakfast, and finally, follow anya around for the rest of your day.
- sometimes you would bump into swansea and daisuke while you're passing by the utility room. and sometimes daisuke stops you for a small talk
- you eventually warm up to him. he's awfully smiley for someone close to your age, then you find out he doesn't go to college, and your question was quickly answered.
- after a bit more small talk, you realise that you both were from the same town (what a small world)
- he mentions that he missed eating a specific candy - it’s called sunshines, silly name, you know - which you could only get from the bakery near your town, and you look away, fully knowing that you had the same candy in your bag.
- .. oh well. maybe another time.
Tumblr media
- your interactions with swansea was rather limited.
- you both see each other and simply choose to ignore each other's existence.
- perhaps it's a part of you that sees through him. and he sees through you too.
- silent understanding is a better word, perhaps.
- you both only talked on the few occasions where you were there to take your psychology evaluation tests. he keeps complaining about daisuke and whatnot - but you know that look in his eyes. that’s not hate.
- after a while, he stops complaining - resorting to grunts and short answers. perhaps tired of attempting to trick you.
- quick yet blunt. the way you prefer things to be.
- you sometimes offer to read out daisuke’s psych test to him. only the parts where you deem as okay to say, though. mostly parts where you ask how his internships are, and him answering with praises towards swansea.
- swansea refuses each time, but you read some of them anyway. when daisuke complains about swansea though, you read out his response to "how was your day". which mainly consisted of his joys of the day.
- swansea pretends he doesn't like it. once again, you know that look in his eyes.
- you thought he would be done with acting around you, but you suppose, ego can't be beaten sometimes
- you really like their father-son-like dynamic. you just hope daisuke doesn't let the old man's words get to him.
Tumblr media
- after doing curly's and jimmy's psych test (jimmy needed a lot of convincing in order for him to take these seriously) you find that they were friends that go way, way back.
- you're unsure if curly could see it, but you could tell that jimmy admires him. that man admires curly a bit too much. you're familiar with situations like these. you just hope it won't tip towards envy. oh who you were kidding - it's almost too late now.
- you finally realise why you felt uncomfortable around jimmy after the first month.
- the envy and self depreciation is overwhelming, and you truly applaud anyone who holds a conversation for longer than five minutes. (maybe you should applaud yourself as well)
- self destruction is the only path he’s going towards, and you would help him if he wasn’t so.. stubborn. for a lack of a better word.
- but overall, this trip isn't too bad so far. right?
Tumblr media
- its been a month and a half.
- you and anya had formed some sort of sibling relationship..?
- it started with her seeing one of your stickers you had placed on one of your items, and her nostalgia of having them on her cup as well.
- you both began to talk more from there. continuous stories about your daily life (which isn’t the most pleasant) but you got to know each other better from there.
- you were immediately stunned at her determination and passion for nursing. - and perhaps, after this all, you could plausibly send a recommendation in for her.
- you didn’t tell her that, of course. you weren’t able to guarantee it, and you wouldn’t want to give false hope.
- you find that she was incredibly good at games after you lent her your ds. and all of sudden, her competitiveness on game board nights didn’t look so out of place after all.
- she had encouraged you to get out of your shell.. despite many protests from you. (it.. sort of works…?)
Tumblr media
- curly, after more interactions, seems to be a great guy. great leader, optimistic despite.. well. everything else, really. you’d be miserable if you had to live outside of earth half your life.
- the very brief interactions you have with him were pleasant.
- a bit concerning to think he’s carrying all this responsibility for all these years though. perhaps a little rest could do - is what you said.
- he only responded with a chuckle, and a ‘it is what it is’.
- there isn’t any other response you would’ve expected from him, anyway.
- you just hope that once he does find the end of this career, he’ll find something more.. lighter.
- maybe a baker. maybe a craftsman. maybe something else entirely, all you know that this whole leadership thing might end up causing him more harm than good.
- which is what jimmy turned out to be.
- whenever it’s your turn to do jimmy’s evaluations, you always groan a bit.
- you show a bit of interest, and he goes the mile to talk about himself. not quite boasting - but very much putting others beneath his shoes to seem… “relatable” to you.
- you only nod. you give him a small phrase from time to time, but otherwise - it’s all nods.
- the issue with jimmy is not his current state itself. sure, it’s annoying and insufferable - but what’s dangerous is next stage of what people like him become.
- envious. greedy - dangerous. you wouldn’t trust him even if it kills you.
- and so you don’t. you try to keep a wary gaze on him.
Tumblr media
- another thing you find that swansea is quite similar to .. other people in your neighbourhood.
- he talks about how he’s been struggling with alcohol, on a particularly hard night.
- you listen. he keeps talking. you add on his statements a little bit from time to time, to show that you’re listening. otherwise, you’re dead quiet, eyes staring at him, and his eyes towards the false sky by the medical bed.
- he complains to you more than anything though. about.. nearly everything. about how daisuke won’t do this properly, about the food for dinner, about him being unable to see his wife at home, how he won’t be able to see his kids grow up, and you, in exchange, tell a bit about yourself.
- he understands you; and you understand him too. you were both trapped under the same situation at the start of your lives, and you, by chance, managed to escape.
- he makes a joke about it. it leaves a bittersweet taste in your mouth.
- …although.. this meant that you were a bit privileged in the way swansea treated you.
- this showed in the way that he allows you to mess with his toolbox (maybe you were the only other person who was interested in his toolbox, aside from daisuke..)
- he teaches you the basics, and daisuke often chimes in from what he had studied before from swansea as well.
- you often thank the two for the lesson, and swansea seems a bit more smug after, whilst daisuke seems more proud of himself.. and due to that, you are more than welcome in the utility room.. from time to time.
Tumblr media
- ah, speaking of daisuke..
- he’s incredibly sweet. you wonder if he particularly needs the sweets anymore from how overly sweet he is. you do end up sharing your snacks either way, and thankfully, he’s obedient enough to only request one sunshine every one to two days. (at this rate, you might have just enough to last you the entire.. 9 months? close to 8 now..)
- he also plays games, and showed you his own ds, stickers of pokemon, doodles, and small little things indicating his other interests were plastered all over it - which you end up telling anya.
- this is where anya’s willingness to help you connect with others come in.
- not before long, you, anya, and daisuke managed to make a post-game night activity.. which included playing the ds until you all reach the specific curfew anya had set (thankfully, she did set one, otherwise daisuke would’ve tried to beat you until his fingers fell off.)
- there was one time that he was too tired, and you had to drag him back into his room. with an arm slinged around your shoulder, and anya following behind in your footsteps, he stayed asleep the entire time.
- he wasn’t drunk. hell, do you even have alcohol in the ship? the answer was no. unless you were to drink cleaning alcohol.. but point is. he didn’t get drunk, and he was just that tired. you wonder what kind of new training he’s been trying to do.
- you tried your best to drag him, but once you were beside his bed, you had only one choice.
- you slowly placed him back into his bed, lifting his leg up to remove his shoes - before placing him properly on the bed.
- anya had already excused herself back to her room, and with the silence (and occasional snores from daisuke), you find yourself observing daisuke’s room.
- pink weights, a very, very patterned backpack, and a charger. those were the main things that caught your eyes.
- .. and you had his ds in your hand. so out of kindness, you went over to plug in his ds for him.
- before you left him alone, you checked up on him for the last time. he’s sleeping soundly. you try to close the door as silently as possible.
- you hope he continues to dream tonight.
Tumblr media
- so far the worst thing you had to witness from the male was the absolute mess that was his laundry pile.
- it started when you - whose room was beside daisuke’s - smelt something akin to the concentrated scent of the (sun) detergent.
- you knocked at his door, and only a muffled wait echoes inside, before you could hear him tripping over his own feet to open the door.
Tumblr media
his eyes meet yours - looking quite frazzled. He’s heaving slightly, perhaps a side effect of rushing to get the door.
“h..hi!”
the detergent smell only got stronger, and it became very much obvious that he.. had a little accident with the laundry. your focus flickers between the mess he is, and the mess behind him.
“...did anything happen?”
he chuckles nervously, avoiding eye contact.
“oooff course not! and i almost forgot that i had to- uhm- change my sheets! so see ya soo-”
right as he was about to shut the door, you had kept it wedged open with your shoes. his eyes actually meet yours, again, and you tilt your head slightly, arms folding.
“i can smell it from the hallway. let me help you.”
“no- i can do it!”
you send him a particular stare. it seems to make him falter, and you sigh once more.
“let me help you.”
he looks hesitant, his grip on the handle weakening. a moment passes, and then he closes hie eyes, and smiles at you - defeated.
“alright then... but don't be angry!”
Tumblr media
- as you step in the room, you’re met with the sight of.. very, very many bubbles on a stack of clothes.
- and when you look back at daisuke, he only offers you a guilty grin, and a look that said i told you so
- that’s the story of how your fingers managed to smell like detergent for a whole week, and the event that hallmarked your almost instant closeness with daisuke.
Tumblr media
- ever since the laundry accident, you two have been together quite often.
- every lunch break was simply just sitting alone, until anya or daisuke approaches you. If anya approached first, then daisuke followed. if anya couldn’t join you in the lounge, then you’d go to the medical bay, and if you’re allowed in - daisuke would follow right after.
- everytime you manage to get spare time to lounge on the extended sofa, daisuke immediately joins you. the only difference from before was the way he joins you on the couch. sometimes by closing your eyes from behind and asking you to guess (even when it’s apparent), sometimes by jumping or launching himself to the spot beside you.
- every now and then, he scares the living soul out of you. he laughs until you start chasing him with a cup in your hand.
- he tries his best to make you laugh. the best he got so far was an amused stare from you.
- apparently, it’s good enough for him. he cheered the entire night you made that expression.
Tumblr media
- on his psych tests, he talks a lot.
- there’s.. not much time to talk to you. you only realise once he starts to talk about his week, instead of his day.
- nowadays, you focus on getting your analysis done. how each person’s behaviour have changed - in general, of course. you’re not going to mention their every detail, and rather, you ask them to fill out little questionnaires (which is the only detail you’re submitting)
- usually, before you got close, he mainly talks about his day, and only his day.
- sure you spent a lot of time together, but since this was the only chance to be truly alone, it’s usually the time that he opens up.
- he barely does so. but it’s much easier to see his emotions on his face, with far more vulnerability.
- it starts from little things, like how he really thinks swansea might get tired of teaching him. or maybe the way jimmy got mad at him because he accidentally spilled oil on his shirt.
- then it turns to things in his house. how he missed his mother, how he missed seeing his cat, how he felt like he had to take this internship because he felt like he had to prove something.
- you offer him hugs from time to time. he accepts them.
- sometimes you feel tears soak into your shirt. you try your best to comfort him after. whether it would be rubbing circles into his back, or offering him an extra piece of sunshine - you tried your best.
- you know you aren’t the best at that. but if this is all you can do, then what else should you do?
Tumblr media
- sometimes you wonder if this ship really does need to be human automated.
- what costs do they cut by hiring human workers instead? innovation? investment in machinery? why keep people on barely minimum wages in a random ship being sent out to space, with minimum facilities and minimum safety and security? isn’t it a safer bet to go all out with machinery, then turn a profit later down the line - rather than close to losing this hunk of metal nearly every other day?
- then you look into the lounge in what is assumed to be “six in the morning” - you don’t trust the clocks. everything feels fake - and get hit by literal beams of sunshines in your way ( read : curly, anya, and daisuke laughing together )
- maybe you can keep those thoughts for another day. you ate.. pretty okay pancakes that morning.
Tumblr media
- perhaps the only thing you wished you could change, in definite terms, was the way jimmy lingered around anya’s room.
- so stop it you did. or at the very least, attempted to stop it, you did.
- that’s the main reason you ended up sleeping on the front of anya’s room. (with her permission, of course)
- the reason you proposed to her was, and you quote,
“i keep on having dreams of cockroaches.”
- anya looked at you half asleep. the other half concerned, worried, and confused. you shuffled in front of her room, your hand hauling a mattress and your blankets awkwardly.
- .. she finally allowed you after a small while. maybe its because you looked pathetic. maybe its something else. you do not know, and you don't want to know.
- you eventually placed your mattress back into your room (due to the lack of space, you should’ve expected that - your only reason was that you did this on a whim), and slept on the floor, facing the walls with your blanket covering you like a silkworm.
- it’s not comfortable. thank god the tulpar has - at best - subpar air conditioning, otherwise you’d freeze to death in this huge metal hunk in space.
- it successfully warded off jimmy though. or so you’ve observed. so you really don’t mind the way your back aches every morning.
- maybe you should bring more pillows…
Tumblr media
the door behind you croaks slowly, and slowly- your eyes peek open, looking up at a dimmed figure. an anya-looking dimmed figure. you immediately relax back in your blanket.
“..nightmares again?” she looks concerned about your sleeping position. for a moment, you feel bad for lying.
you purse your lips, and nod at her.
“.. yeah.”
she watches from the door, and nods at you.
you think she finally figured out that you knew about jimmy’s recent lingering. she spares you a thankful glance, and sends you a soft nod.
“..goodnight. thank you.”
you nod back, and once the door shuts back, you slump further. as much as these metal walls allow you, anyway.
you hope you dream this night. maybe of home, or of something sweet. maybe of something better.
you aren't sure what that something is. but you hope you find it soon.
but, oh, who were you kidding.
you never got the chance to dream. this night isn't any different.
you slip into a void; your body awaiting tomorrow.

about that work crush (chapter 12) | jamie benn
(do you hate me for how late this is? please forgive <3)
chapter 1 | chapter 2 | chapter 3 | chapter 4 | chapter 5 | chapter 6 | chapter 7 | chapter 8 | chapter 9 | chapter 10 | chapter 11
Teaser: "Your bedroom does have a lock, right?"
Tumblr media
Your subtle miscommunication with Jamie was a wake up call to him: he had to do better communicating with you. He also had to make sure he separated his life as captain and the life he was interested in building with you. They couldn't be the same, especially if your paths had to cross again like it did with the reporter fiasco.
"Did you guys figure it out?" Tyler asked Jamie the next day, who was in the middle of his morning workout.
"Yeah, we're good."
"That girl is in love with you, man," Tyler replied. "Don't fuck that up."
"I don't plan on it."
You were in back-to-back meetings all day, especially as you started the transition to a permanent position with the team. You were drowning in paperwork, which just seemed like busy work.
You still had to nurse the "interim" in your title, but the next few weeks would require facetime with board members, donors, and a lot more training staff. With the shift, your schedule drastically changed, and you were spending a lot less time at the arena and more time around Dallas and neighboring cities.
Jamie hated it. Granted, he knew it wouldn't be forever but it was annoying that he couldn't just show up at your office on a break. The upside? More uninterrupted time at your places, like tonight.
“Ugh, you’re amazing,” You cheered after opening your front door, hugging Jamie tightly. “I love these.”
“I know, that’s why I brought them,” You could feel his chest vibrate as he chuckled, his scent filling your nose. He was holding a family size bag of your favorite candy in his hand that was not wrapped around your back.
“Okay, so,” Standing back, to look up into his brown eyes, “I ordered food.”
“Did you?”
“Yes. Don't say anything but I haven't eaten since, like, noon?"
He looked down at his watch as you allowed him inside and closed the door behind him.
“You are nuts," He laughed. "How have you not passed out?"
You rolled your eyes at him, but led him into your kitchen where you had just started to separate the food you had ordered. Jamie was clearly comfortable in your apartment, moving straight to your fridge and pulling out a beer for himself and your favorite wine.
These were the moments you were enjoying the most with Jamie. When you were able to exist together, and share small moments.
You could convince Jamie to watch anything you wanted, he was just happy to be with you. Tonight, you had tricked him into The Bachelor which was definitely not a show he would watch on his own.
He wasn't as focused on the show like you were, and took breaks to clean up after you guys were done eating. You would never complain about a man who cleaned. And, Jamie was clearly a neat freak which would work in your favor.
“This show is stupid,” Jamie mumbled to you, as he returned to his spot next to you on the couch. You laughed, getting comfortable again against his chest. His hand found its way to your side, his pinky finger touching your bare skin. His other arm was bent behind his head, most likely to keep himself awake.
“Do you want to watch something else?”
“You’re clearly enjoying it,” He shrugged.
“I can watch it anytime,” You replied, looking up at him. "I like to please my guests."
He laughed, turning slightly red which made your stomach do flips.
“Who do you think is going to win?”
“On The Bachelor?” He nodded. “Honestly, it’s hard to tell. But, I’m trying to not see any spoilers online so that I can authentically watch it. Personally, I’m going to hope that Madison wins, just because I think her and Peter really connect well.”
“Which one is she?”
You waited until she appeared on the screen, “Her. She’s really nice and stays out of the drama which is always a plus on this show.”
Jamie hummed in response.
“Seriously, we can watch something else, if you want?” You asked, sitting up slightly so that you could get a good look at his face.
He looked back at you, studying your features. With the shift in position, you could now feel his fingertips lightly tracing shapes on your exposed waist.
“What?” You blushed, when many seconds went by without a response. You were feeling the intensity of his stare as well as the calmness of his touch and you didn't know what to do next.
“I’m really sorry about the other day,” He said. "I can't stop thinking about it to be honest."
“Jamie, I already told you, it’s resolved. We’re good,” You assured him, reaching over to put your hand on his face. “If it was still an issue, trust me, you would know. I wouldn't be explaining The Bachelor to you.”
He smiled at you, “I know.”
“Just wait. One day, I’m really going to be in a bad mood and you’re going to have to deal with it.”
“I’m looking forward to it.” You studied Jamie for a moment, his arm flexed behind his head. Hot. His hair, somehow the perfect mix of messy and styled. Hot. His current grip on your side. Hot. Everything about him. Hot.
Once you noticed that he was watching you watch him, you finally turned your attention back to the TV. “Stop staring at me.”
“I should be saying the same thing to you, but it doesn't bother me,”
“I wish I didn’t blush so freaking much,” You groaned, making him laugh again.
“Why? I like it, it’s cute,” He shrugged.
“That’s because you feel accomplished when you make me blush.”
“No, that’s because I’m grateful that you even talk to me, let alone blush because of me,” He said.
“You, big-shot hockey captain of one of the top teams in the NHL, is grateful to be talking to me?” You raised your eyebrows. “You’re crazy.”
“I play hockey for a living. I shoot a puck, skate around, and knock guys over. You, on the other hand, do real shit and help people through actual problems. I think your job is a lot more important than mine,” He argued. “So, you’re crazy.”
“You do the same thing, Jamie,” You rolled your eyes. “Kids battling cancer look up to you in their darkest times. When you go visit them, do you even realize how special you make them feel?”
“Of course, I do. But, that’s still nothing compared to you and what you’re working for every day. I wish I could do that stuff full time.”
“Jamie,” You sat up. “Yes, you play hockey, but you’re also a role model to anyone who watches you. Hockey is hard as shit, take it from me who still doesn’t know how to skate on the ice. Why do you think they made you the captain? Why do you think you’re the face of the franchise?”
“You know,” He sat up as well. “You make me feel amazing, I hope you know that.”
“Same to you,” You smiled, kissing his cheek. He kissed your lips after, pulling you closer to him. You relaxed into him, allowing him to guide damn near every body part of yours against his.
The size difference between you two was intoxicating for you, especially in moments like this when you really just wanted him to take control. You've had your fun in the past, but there was something about Jamie that made you want to relinquish control.
Jamie's phone started to buzz on your coffee table, interrupting your moment. But, Jamie never pulled away from you. He continued to kiss you through one round of buzzes, then silence.
"You don't want to check that?" You smiled against his lips.
"Not at all." He reattached his lips to yours, his hands traveling lower on your body for a second, before trailing back up to your hair. You moaned into his mouth as he gently pulled your hair, giving himself more room to lean into you.
His phone started buzzing again, forcing him to freeze in his movements. He kissed you one more time, before pulling away from you to look at his phone, his hands still tangled in your hair. “It’s Miro.”
“Answer it. It’s 11, it could be an emergency.” You watched as Jamie picked up the phone with his hand closest to the table, holding it to his ear.
“Hey, what's up, man?” You could faintly hear Miro’s voice through the phone. Jamie’s hand moved from your hair to the back of your neck, gently massaging the area.
“I’m busy, man, not gonna lie to you,” Jamie smiled at you. You turned your head, kissing the inside of his wrist.
“Alright, alright, calm down,” He rolled his eyes. “Yeah, just stay inside. I’m on my way.”
You waited as Jamie got off the phone with Miro. “What did he do now?”
“He’s hammered,” Jamie laughed. “And, needs me to pick him and Roope up, which also means make sure they get into their own beds in their own houses.”
“Captain’s duty, huh?”
“Always,” He said.
“Well, I’ll take my candy now.”
He rolled his eyes again, this time at you. He reached behind him, handing you the bag of candy.
“I’m sorry we can’t continue,” He said. “Watching the show, I mean.”
“Uh huh,” You laughed. “I know the team comes first.”
“Not a chance,” He shook his head. He leaned over, kissing you again. “I had fun tonight. Hopefully I can get a second date?”
“Hmm, I’ll think about it." He smiled, kissing you once more. “Text me when you get home?”
“Yeah, I will.”
-----
The perks of dating a captain of a NHL team included many team parties with free food and alcohol. At first, you were worried about how some of the guys would feel having you around during down time, but it felt like a big family.
You were intentional about checking in with players in sessions around your presence, and it seemed like they loved to have you around. And, you really liked the approval you had gotten for your relationship with Jamie. You finally felt like you could relax into your relationship and not hide.
Today, Jamie was hosting a low-key BBQ with the players and their families. He took hosting duties seriously: decorations, caterers and homemade food, and endless drinks. It was actually shocking how much he cared to foster a good environment for his guys, and it was really attractive.
He forced you to be hands off, citing that you were a guest no matter how many times you tried to argue. He spent most of the party traveling around the group, making sure everyone was having a good time. Once he was certain he checked in with everyone face-to-face, he took his moment to pull you into the kitchen for a few minutes.
You and Jamie were both in agreement to keep PDA light at team outings, but that didn't mean Jamie was going to keep his distance from you for hours.
He brought you a piece of Pavelski's wife's pie which you were basically devouring as he recounted the football game he just refereed between some of the guys' kids. He sat on his kitchen counter while you stood between his legs, watching the videos he recorded. Listening to his voice in the videos, you thought He's such a dad.
More than a few minutes passed by after you finished the pie, but neither you or Jamie made any movements to rejoin the group.
With your back against him, his hands were around your body, which was fine, until he started rubbing his hands up and down your arms and shoulders as he spoke about random things. If it wasn’t for your long sleeve shirt, Jamie would be feeling the goosebumps that he was causing.
“Jamie,” You whispered, cutting him off. “Are you good?”
“Yeah, why?” He furrowed his eyebrows, looking down at you.
“A little handsy there, aren't we?”
“Sorry,” He blushed. “I wasn’t thinking about it.”
“I didn’t say stop,” You mumbled. "I just can't focus on anything you're saying when you're touching me like that."
“I'm sorry, baby," He replied.
"So, should we talk about when we’re gonna reschedule our sleepover?” You asked, turning around in his arms.
“I think planning it kind of backfired last time,” He said. “How about now?”
“What?”
“I’m sure no one will miss us. I mean, we’ve been in here for 10 minutes and no one has come in." He was watching your expression, his eyes gliding over every part of your face as you considered his offer. What the hell.
"Your bedroom does have a lock, right?” You surprised yourself with your agreement.
Jamie laughed, nodding before leaning down and pressing his lips to yours. "It does. And, I kind of already told the guys to host themselves."
“You’re insane,” You mumbled against him.
“If we’re not going upstairs, we have to stop now,” He breathed against your lips. “Seriously, I already need a cold shower.”
“Come on,” He gently pushed you back before stepping down from the counter. He grabbed your hand, pulling you upstairs.
“Slow down,” You laughed as he pulled you up the stairs.
He pulled you into his bedroom, pushing you against the door as soon as he closed it. He leaned over you as he locked the door to his room. “If someone knocks, it’s your fault.”
“No one told you to throw a barbeque today,” You smiled up at him.
“And, no one told you to show up looking this good,” He said, kissing you, using his bodyweight to hold you between him and the door.
His size is everything.
-----
“The food wasn’t terrible today, man,” Tyler joked.
“Why are you still here?” Jamie looked at him. “Everyone already left.”
“This love-hate relationship that you guys have going on is very entertaining to watch,” You added.
“Yeah, yeah, I’ll see you guys later,” Tyler rolled his eyes. He gave you a hug before attempting to hug Jamie but he pushed him away. You shook your head as you hopped up to sit on the counter, exactly where Jamie was sitting before your moment upstairs.
As Tyler was the last guest out, he left you and Jamie finally alone at his place.
“Everything is mostly clean besides the grill, but I’ll clean that tomorrow. Everyone complimented your plates, by the way.”
“I told you,” You laughed. “You can get plastic plates and tupperware but it doesn’t have to be the plainest one.”
“Just take your compliment,” He teased as he finished washing his hands.
He walked over to you to stand in between your legs. “Did you have a good time today?”
“I had the best time,” You smiled, wrapping your arms around his neck. “Which is always the case when I’m with you.”
“I feel like I can finally breathe around you now,” He mumbled before meeting you in a kiss. His hands moved to your hips, “Thank you for coming today.”
“No pun intended?”
He laughed, “Not originally but I guess it fits, huh?”
"Thank you for waiting," You whispered to him. "I know I probably made you wait longer than you're used to, but I'm happy we waited."
"I was about to explode for sure, but I would do anything for you," He replied, "You're worth it."
"So, you still actually like me?"
"Are you kidding me?" He laughed, stepping closer to you, if that was even possible. He raised his hand to the ponytail in your hair, tugging gently to lift your lips to his. "I'm obsessed with you."
"I can't tell if you're real," You replied, looking over his features.
"Really?" He kissed you again. "5 months in and you still doubt me?"
"I don't doubt you, per se," You smiled when his hair fell over his eyes. "I doubt everyone."
"What can I do to get special treatment?"
"I think you've had enough special treatment actually," You laughed. "I should head home."
"You can't stay?"
"I didn't pack a bag and I'm off tomorrow."
"More reason why you should stay here because so am I," He said. " I have an extra toothbrush, and all the basic necessities you might need."
"On one condition," You replied. "Tomorrow, you have to make me your mom's pizza recipe. I've been thinking about it for weeks."
"Deal."

If you don't mind me asking, what happened with the nutrition stuff?
The only in-state school accepting nutrition students as a second bachelor's degree is 300 miles away from the place where I can both work and afford housing.
At this point my options are:
Move to the area with the school, which would require quitting my job (losing my insurance!) and probably taking out loans to afford housing.
Take out loans to go to a nearby private school.
Take out loans to go to an out of state program with online classes.
The second and third options would probably cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $100k, and the first option would cost less but would mean there was no possibility of me working to pay for rent or insurance while finishing the degree. I'm just not willing to take on that level of debt for a field that I'm deeply interested in but that doesn't appear to pay well enough to justify that kind of debt when I'm approaching my forties and don't know if I'd be physically able to get through the internship required for certification.
If a local state school ends up opening up their nutrition program to 2nd bachelor's students, I would jump on that immediately, but both programs I was looking at two years ago are no longer open for students in my situation.
So it has nothing to do with losing interest or not being able to keep up with the work, I just plain can't afford it and am unwilling to take that much of a risk.
The community college I'm looking at for the computer science program is a lot more technical than my current school, and has a nutrition certification that is a lot more comprehensive than the classes I've been able to take so far, so I may end up doing some nutrition stuff while I do the computer stuff too.
I had considered getting a nursing degree (because there are a bunch of local state schools with nursing programs open) and focusing on nutrition once I finished that, but I realized that I just don't have the level of interest in nursing that I would need to go that route. The only reason I'm still involved with either computer classes or nutrition classes is because I'm genuinely interested, and I get the feeling that if I tried to finish nursing school I'd waste a lot of time and money and bail out, or I'd finish and I'd hate my options.
So computers and a growing resentment for the US education system it is!

i know a gazillion people have done this already but... i'm gonna post my stardew valley bachelor/ette age hcs + my reasoning hehe
to start this off, i want to say that this is based on what concernedape said about all of them being 20+ but they're also all my personal hcs so i understand if you disagree!
ok that being said, here we go
- maru: 22. she works as a nurse as well as helping her dad with research, i think she's young but not Too young ykwim? demetrius is also really strict so it adds to her seeming young
- penny: 23. it seems like she's been teaching the kids for a few years already even though she hasn't gone to college yet, she also seems older than she is cus she's had to parent her mother :/
- sam: 25. since he lives at home, i think people think he's younger but tbf i know a lot of mid 20 somethings who live at home (me included until recently). i also think jodi and kent had him really young, like 18ish, typical military couple situation
- sebastian: 27. he remembers a time before robin married demetrius so he has to be at least 4 years older than maru, and i think he's a little older because i don't think robin gave birth immediately after getting remarried
- abigail: 23. she's comfortable hanging out with sam and sebastian but definitely seems younger than them, plus she's doing online school which tends to take longer than traditional uni
- alex: 20. to be honest he just seems like the youngest to me, he still wears his varsity jacket and has big dreams of playing gridball and stuff. also a lot of unresolved trauma.
- haley: 22. she's bratty but in a cute tsundere way which makes me think she might be on the younger side. plus she gives me (and everyone else) huge closeted lesbian vibes, so i feel like she hasn't fully come into her identity yet
- emily: 30. i feel like there's a significant age gap between her and haley cus she has second mom vibes and they also seem to have some friction in terms of responsibilities because emily does a lot for haley
- leah: 31. she gives me huge "i hit 30 and realized i needed to change my entire life" energy when she talks about leaving her ex and moving to stardew valley
- harvey: 34. i think he's the oldest, like he doesn't feel ancient but at the same time he had to have gone through med school and his residency so 34 feels comfortable
- shane: 31. he seems older because of the depression and the trauma, but i don't think he's past his early 30s yet, he kinda stopped taking care of himself so it just looks that way
- elliott: 32. he's got big "phd student who abandoned a career in academia to write his great american novel" type vibes, and he's not really self conscious about being very poetic and flowery so i think he's out of his tumultuous twenties

having a friend group in your late twenties is so weird bc it's like, someone's a broke grad student, someone's keeping their head down at a job w no degree that gets good raises, someone's getting their second bachelors and working part time, someone's a working lawyer pulling like 120k, someone's been unemployed for two years, someone's a former college dropout taking nursing prereqs online, someone has an office job where they get to be on their phone all day, and you're all getting shitfaced at the same gay club on a Thursday night

CVIII/CoD characters if they were in college in no particular order:
Sypha: she's the nerdy looking homeschooled girl dressing in the baggy clothes and glasses who looks like she has never been with a man ever in her life but mentions "Oh and my husband..." In which you pause and think wait she's MARRIED?! How?? She's incredible at science and reads like a beast. Might get involved with an engineering or nursing degree there's no in-between for her. Loves tabletop gaming and would destroy you in Mariokart.
Julia: opposite of Sypha (her best friend) who has the good looks for days but isn't married. Instead she's in a situationship with her brother's ex-boyfriend and doesn't know what to do about it. Also loves science, but has a leaning towards animal biology and being a vet or smth like that. She’s the roommate with a cat or dog or both. Will get on your case about doing the dishes. Gardening isn't her hobby, it's her lifestyle.
Alucard: he's the student who only does online classes...but at campus. Hiding in his dorm room. You only see him once in a blue moon when he comes out for a glass of water during the day. His major? Linguistics and library science probably, but you're not certain. Wears glasses like a total nerd. You're pretty sure that his dad is the suave and equally creepy history professor that has an eclectic series of reviews on rateyourprofessor.
Grant: he's the guy you see literally everywhere. He's at the campus events, the gym, the library, the cafeteria, your best friend's bachelor's party, and he's in at least one of your classes. Name it and he's there in the crowd. Easy to spot because he always wears the same pair of bright red shoes (adidas for some reason) and bandana. Always wears it, is he bald? You decide. Everyone knows he's a declared business major and is obsessed with sales and the stock market. However, he makes some questionable choices regarding money with how he has access to all the tv shows and movies and not a coin spent on streaming services. Has done drugs at some point and can ace the climbing wall like nobody's business.
Trevor: a local who happens to have the college in his backyard. When he's not in class or with the wife, man is eating it up at the campus gym or invested in some sporting event. He's the one that jumps to conclusions in class too fast, so you watch him and the professor argue for at least 10 minutes every class. But at the end of the day is one of the nicest and kindest individuals you've probably met. As much as he likes being physically active, man either has a major in family relations or education. Him and Sypha host a Friday game night at their apartment. Everyone's in love with him, but he is obsessed with his wife. There's some funny picture of him wearing thigh high boots floating around the student body and those boots just might be stuffed in the front of the closet.
Hector: he's part of the older crowd that's finally getting around to college in his mid 20s, because sometimes it be like that. Still not over the girl he loved in high school, who may or may not have died? You're never completely sure when it comes to him. Due to this, his romantic life is a hot mess between these two siblings whom he has both dated (separately) and a certain history professor that seems to be obsessed with him. Is a bio-chem major and history minor. A quiet guy at first, but actually really smart, sweet and is an underdog champ at performing above-average in class. Everyone on campus agrees his jeans fit him almost too well and a person can't help but stare sometimes.
Isaac: he's got the bad boy energy of being the student who has a past crime-record, but still weaseled his way into college because of how wicked smart he is. Dresses in questionable black clothing and doesn't believe in belts. He's low-key obsessed with that one history professor which may be why he and his ex-boyfriend broke up in the first place. However they still see each other all the time, because their majors are the exact same, but he's thinking of switching to micro-biology believing he will be the one to find the cure to cancer. Can be overprotective of his sister and vice versa. He loves getting paid to be an actor for the nursing program simulations, but all the nurses in training hate it. Drives a motorcycle because why the hell not.
BONUS
Saint Germain: the professor who's always late to the start of class, but always happens to be there for when you slip, fall in the ice and rip your pants.

Basic tips for moving to another country
Ok, here's some things to consider as you start looking at countries/visas:
Career/Degree
So, this is rough, but, most countries will prefer you to at least have a bachelors. If you don't have one it doesn't 100% close the door, but you will need to have skill training in a trade at the very least. The reality is when people from the US are looking to move to another country there's an expectation that you will have proof of education. If you are currently in high school/college you can get around this by studying abroad, but once you've graduated that's no longer an option.
Different countries are looking for different careers/skills. Make sure once you've picked a few to consider that you check the list of in demand jobs/skills. If you have what they're looking for immigration becomes far easier than if you have a job in a career where there is less of a need. Some common careers that often make this list include:
Healthcare (especially nurses and specialists)
Engineers
Programmers/IT
Teachers
Skilled trades such as construction/electrician
Truck Drivers (be warned you'd need a drivers license, and typically they want a good chunk of previous experience)
If your career isn't on that list don't worry right away, while these are common different countries have different needs. That being said I will say I've seen nurses on almost every single country's list, so if you complete a nursing program it becomes way easier to get a job anywhere, so long as it is a career you are comfortable in.
Language
You all knew this was coming. If English is your only language, you need to either choose a country where it is the official language/commonly spoken or begin learning a new language. I would advise not starting to learn until you've chosen a country however, but this is something to keep in mind.
Political/Cultural Considerations
Coming from the US, it's easy to view the rest of the world from that lens. However, we're pretty different from other parts of the world, and it's important to take that into consideration. For example, in some parts of the world you need to be extremely careful of what you post online/to social media, or you could face arrest. In some countries you need to be careful of the clothes you wear, and how revealing they are. Make sure to do your research first.
At the same time, it's important to approach with an open mind. Things will be different, but it doesn't have to be bad. Know what your dealbreakers are ahead of time, and choose a country that avoids them. Remember though that while you're moving to another country, you're technically a guest. It's not a great idea to immediately start protesting how things are done your first week in a new country. Do your research ahead of time so you can avoid being in a situation you don't feel safe/comfortable in. Because unless you become a citizen, you really can't do much to change things, and attempting to do so could get you into potential legal trouble depending on the country. We're used to being able to protest and complain as much as we like in the US, but that isn't the case in a large part of the world. So make sure you're being as diplomatic as you can be, and familiarize yourself with local laws/rules.
Additionally, if you are LGBTQ you need to look at which countries are safest for you. Some you will be fine in as long as you blend in/stay closeted, but others you could be in serious danger. I will do a more in depth post on which countries are the best/safest to move to in the future. But to start with do your research on any country and its policies. There's a difference between a country such as Canada which is fairly similar to the US, and a country like Japan where while gay marriage isn't legal they do recognize it if it's legal in your home country, and a country such as Saudi Arabia where it is criminalized.
Religion
Putting this separate. In the US we have all kinds of religions along with religious freedom. This is not the case everywhere, so research ahead of time. Foreigners may not necessarily be expected to convert to the dominant religion of a country, but depending on the country you may be expected to conform to it. Make sure you take that into consideration before selecting a country. And if you're religious and are thinking of converting people... just be aware not all countries are friendly to that, and many will not take that well.
Finances
You all knew this was coming too. It sucks, especially in this economy, but you will want at least some savings. Check the currency of the country you're choosing vs the US dollar, along with the cost of living. Here is a handy calculator, though some locations are not available: Cost of Living Calculator
If the US dollar is worth more in the country you're choosing, then even $5-10,000 can last you a while. Note that some countries will require you to have a minimum amount of money in savings in order to grant you a visa. Some countries will straight up hand you a visa if you pay them enough (I'll cover that in more depth in another post). There have been countries willing to sponsor people moving in the past, but unfortunately covid put many of those programs on hold or straight up removed.
This is by no means an exhaustive list, but this is a starting point for moving to another country.

I recently made a Mouthwashing OC just for fun! I can't say I'll consistently post about it or not but I thought I'd share some about her and her role on the Tulpar- if she were in the game, that is. I want to give a warning and say I have no idea where the characters are from, but I want to safely assume they live in the United States just because I'm not exactly invested enough to research European laws or places at the moment for the sake of her story. I apologize! Art and story below the cut!
In-uniform
Tumblr media
Bernadette is Tulpar's nurse intern. She is mostly in charge of aiding Anya in the medical room and keeping it clean. She is very focused on her intern responsibilities and prefers not to let anything distract her. Anya allows her to handle minor injuries and issues since she's supposed to be studying "abroad" while in nursing school. It's much like Anya, who is also in school, but Anya is working on her bachelor's and is about to finish her ninth attempt at it. Bernadette is only in her second year of getting an associate's since she moved to the United States later in life and has been trying to study English before applying to school. Anya is much more experienced even if she's failed school, she knows more, and she's been working for a long time so having an intern to help out is reasonable. She is very serious about her job and schoolwork so she makes sure to do exactly as she's told whether it be from Anya or Curly. She tends not to listen to Jimmy as a co-pilot simply because he just isn't the captain and she'd prefer to take orders from someone who's been working for longer and she has a gut feeling that he's not a good guy. She keeps to herself and does her job without attempting to question too much. She doesn't speak English that well, she's better at listening and understand directions than questioning them out loud.
No uniform
Tumblr media
When off duty, she's still quiet. Aside from work, she likes to read and take pictures, but there's not much to photograph on the ship. So, because there aren't exactly many subjects, she prefers reading. She has no favorite genre because regardless of the genre, she likes to hear how stories end, and to do so she has to read the whole book. Her interest in books also extends to manuals- so she's often reading things on the ship as well as her own books. She may go to Swansea for a manual he's not using or she may ask Curly for a manual on the ship and how it works- they're not using it, so why let it lie around?
Because of her indulgence in manuals and such, she knows a little of everything. She is by no means an expert like Curly or Swansea, but she could be of use with small things if they were not to be available. She's silent about that fact until it's dire, however. When she really has nothing to do, she tends to listen to people. She enjoys listening.
So she does.
She'll listen to Curly and Jimmy discuss their lives on Earth when they don't think she's there, she hears Anya cry and listens to her fear, and she hears Swansea and Daisuke quarrel about things. She hears everyone's worst moments with no response to follow them.
Relationships
Her relationship with Jimmy is.. not good. Since she's such a listener, she's known about the pregnancy before most. She hates Jimmy for what he did to Anya and only keeps it professional for peace and such but she doesn't respect him and she thinks he's a coward.
Her relationship with Curly is close. He seems to be the best at understanding that she can't speak English too well. He even tries to teach her a little when he's able. She and him have spoken before- longer than she's spoken with any other member. She has to if she wants to learn English after all.
She is very friendly and close with Anya. She sees Anya as her big sister and she trusts Anya the most out of all the crew. She's listened to Anya cry and since she has no savings, she offered to let Anya live with her since they both do primarily online classes and she's gonna help Anya with the whole pregnancy issue. She's spoken with Anya second most out of the group but she's around her more than any one. She doesn't need to talk to have a good friendship with Anya.
When it comes to Swansea, she is more of an acquaintance but like I said, she goes to get manuals from him if she has nothing else to read. She and him have talked briefly about life on Earth and they have a bit of a small bond. They could stay peaceful in a room together, so that's something. She and him don't mind being quiet. In fact, they both seem to prefer it.
Daisuke and Bernadette are both interns starting on this trip, so of course they have some sort of relationship. Daisuke is a young guy with a pretty decent libido. It's just how younger men like him are! It's normal for him to have little crushes and fantasize about girls- which he canonically does. He likes her and he likes talking to her. He rambles to her when Swansea isn't in the mood and he often follows her around when off duty. She's fine with his presence and enjoys listening to him ramble. She's never said a word to him and he could care less. He can read body language and expressions.

what is Maddison going to college for
I am genuinely delighted you have asked!!
The short answer? Right now, they’re almost done with an accounted of science at the community college! Yay!
But there’s a long answer too.
Okay so this may contain some mild spoilers, but it’s just a peek into Madison’s family life.
Madison barely knows what they want to do in life. They come from a family of healthcare workers. Great aunt who’s a charge nurse, mother who does healthcare cybersecurity, (and their dad who’s a little weirdo in architecture)
So obviously.. they have gotten pushed into healthcare as a field. When you’re the ‘problem’ kid in a family, you feel like you need to amount to something eventually. Because if you don’t amount to anything.. what is your family keeping you around for?
Madison struggles with this a lot. They are, at the time of meeting Eurylochus, 1 or 2 semesters away from their associates of science (if they pass all their classes this time) and they ‘want’ to get a Bachelors, of Public Health. Maybe they want to work in Outreach, maybe they want to do administration.. they don’t know. They just know they aren’t cut out for medschool.
Madison was a gifted child with mostly undiagnosed ADHD and Autism, and so they did so well when they were younger. And then they hit college, and had a rough patch where they’d take 3 classes a semester, get an A, a B, and an F. They started college as a dual enrolled kid when they were 13, and now they’re getting the burn out at 19.
And hey, going from being ‘homeschooled’ (put in front of a computer and self pacing themself at online Highschool) to College is big. It’s hard. They’re so focused on taking semesters one test at a time, they aren’t even really thinking about working one day.
Time doesn’t really feel.. real, to Madison. Things that happened last week feel as recent as things that happened one month ago. So sure they know they are required to go to college and get a degree. Do they even know what they’re doing afterwards? That’s the big question.
I think it’s going to be something that Eurylochus might help them come to terms with later. They might ask ‘hey, how did you know what you were gonna do for the rest of your life’ and he’s gonna be like ‘kid, I didn’t have much of a choice.’ Hindsight kind of talk, you know?

(remaking the post because you can't edit polls and i gave the wrong options)
Alright I'm registering for classes and someone needs to talk me out of doing stupid shit but I'm unsure of what shit is stupidest.
Winter term:
I just finished an 8-week photo class that ended up being a huge investment in time just to go and shoot. However that was introductory photography and there is a 6-week intermediate photography class over winter term. I am signed up for photography. (Elective option for AA in Visual Arts)
There is also a 6-week introductory python course over winter term that I am signed up for and will be taking. I'm solid on that one, as long as I pass my C# class this term I'm going to be taking Python for 6 weeks at the beginning of the year.
Spring term:
College Chemistry Saturday class. 7am to 12pm for sixteen weeks. Lab and lecture; this school doesn't offer any chem classes that are after standard 9-5 hours during the regular week or that can be taken even partially online. Pretty sure I'm going to be stuck with this one and am configuring the rest of my schedule around being *less* miserable because of this class.
Survey of Western Art - Online, seems like a gimme. Does have a textbook but not one that I'm going to pay for. (Required for AA in Visual Arts)
2-Dimensional Design - Online, seems fun and like a gimme, Free/No textbook. (Required for AA in Visual Arts)
Object-Oriented Programming - Online, seems difficult, expensive textbook. Will probably be very necessary if I end up going down a more CS/tech path. Probably going to force myself to take this class.
Java Programming - Online, seems not unapproachable, expensive textbook. I don't particularly wanna but my school offers really limited options for computer science and I want to get what I can out of it before I go somewhere else.
Rationale for these weird combinations:
I'm applying as a nursing student at three schools and a biochem student at one of those schools (nutrition programs are apparently only for first-time students; 2nd Bachelor's applications are a lot more limited. I could apply to major in Francophone Studies at one of the schools though). Supposing I get accepted, these classes certainly won't hurt my status at any school that accepts me and the chemistry class is going to be really really necessary. This is the "i give a fuck about nutrition science and also directly helping people" path and if I go this way I'm interested in NP programs down the line. LOTS more school of the serious "I can't work and do this kind of school at the same time" variety.
If I *don't* get accepted to the programs I'm applying to, I'm going to go to a different community college and start working on a couple of AS degrees in computer junk (network admin and security management, computer and networking technology) and get some computer junk certs. I don't think I want/need a BS in compute science, this is the "practical" route of "I could finish this stuff pretty easily and continue working in a field where I have a lot of connections and familiarity with the industry but I am indifferent about a lot of it (pretty passionate about security and accessibility tho). Also allows me to keep working while I just churn school in the background, and all of the computer classes are transferable between the two schools.
Art classes: I think having multiple degrees is funney. I am currently 5 classes away from an AA in visual arts, at the end of this term I will be 4 classes away; if I take all the classes here and can take an elective over the summer I'll have a degree in visual arts. (There is a reasonable possibility that I'll continue taking bullshit classes behind the scenes to get silly degrees regardless of what happens otherwise)
Pretty sure the sensible thing is to drop *at least* photography and survey of western art and also possibly Java and 2D design. I'm somewhat concerned that if my spring term is just Saturday chem and object oriented programming I will start biting things.

Hi! I saw your post about being a programmer and previously working in a warehouse. How did you make the switch? Im trying to get into tech as a 2nd career as well. Thinking about data analytics as it applies to healthcare (I’m a nurse). Did you do a bootcamp? What did you do to change careers? Thanks!
I actually got a Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering in 2012 but never got a job doing that because everyone wanted experience and because the process of getting a job is not designed with autistic people in mind.
The warehouse job was supposed to be a temporary job while I looked for a job as an Electrical Engineer, but because I never got one, I stayed at the warehouse for 8 years until the pandemic caused them to close.
I decided that I'd have a better chance as a programmer because I could start off making my own apps. Even if I didn't make much money from my own apps, they could be mentioned on a resume or talked about in an interview in order to give me an edge over others with no experience.
So I taught myself how to make Android apps and made some of my own. I then took an online boot camp in order to learn the best practices and specific skills that are more relevant to a career.
I tried every method of job hunting I could think of. I tried applying on job boards. I tried writing a cover letter. I tried a professional resume writing service. I tried responding to calls from telemarketers.
I tried using a staffing agency that wrote a bogus resume filled with lies in order to make it seem like I had 10 years of experience with many different tasks. This got me several interviews a week. This didn't get me a job, but it gave me practice for when I finally got an interview for real. I wouldn't recommend this, but I didn't know their tactics until an interviewer showed me the resume that was being used.
I eventually got a job from a telemarketer. But to prevent them from wasting my time, I told every telemarketer upfront that I have no experience and no interest in relocating. Once they got me an interview, it was very easy to answer their questions after all the bogus interviews that I did.

I hope these questions don't annoy you, but whats it like working in a lab?
I'm considering the same career path cause I really like my lab classes so far
Not annoying! from what ive seen there are 3 or so types of labs, which are labs in the hospital, which are obviously a faster pace (did half of my preceptorship in one), reference labs, which get a fairly high volume since they're doing testing everybody's sending out for (did other half of my preceptorship in one), and privately owned labs which pick up samples from clinics urgent cares nursing homes etc (both of my jobs have been with private labs).
I like it! It's very routine. I have my set of tasks i do when i clock in and my set of tasks i do at the end of the night and in between I'm just sticking samples on the machines and releasing results. and there is imo enough variation to it to keep it interesting - troubleshooting failed qc, or double checking criticals, or having to do manual difs. if you're liking undergrad lab work I'm assuming you're doing stuff like pcr and gels and micro plates? which is a lot of what molecular departments do in a lab besides micro which is micro. I currently work in the core portion of a lab, which is hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, and chemistry. You really only break out the microscope for urinalysis and hem. we have a micro department that handles all the cultures, and a molecular department that does molecular testing. lots of labs have small micro factions and do lots of micro send out instead. the last lab i worked at did that. the hospital i did my preceptorship at would do plating, but then send all the plates out to be read and send out all the blood culture tubes to be cultured elsewhere. the lab I'm currently at does most cultures in house.
re: education to work in a lab you have to be ASCP certified. After I got my biology degree, I enrolled in texas tech's CLS certification program, which was 3 semesters of classes (preceptorships were the majority of the coursework the last semester). I didn't mind doing it because I was a fresh graduate and I didn't want to Career Hunt or go to grad school. so 3 sems to get a guaranteed job sounded great to me. Since I had my bio degree, I had most of the baseline credits out of the way. chem biochem ochem cell bio genetics etc etc. And the 3 sems I did were lab specific courses like blood banking, clinical chemistry, molecular methods, immunology, phlebotomy, lab management, clinical micro and hematology. there are tons of post bachelor's cls programs, and tons of them are delivered online so that you can chip away at it part time while working.
A nice thing about it is that you can get work literally anywhere. I moved to a town with a population of 90k. Applied for 3 jobs as a brand new graduate. and got 3 offer letters. the payscale's pretty variable, depending on where you are, but it is nice to know that i'm certified in like. 47 states and could get some sort of job in any of them no problem. i think once you've been certified a year you can get cali state certification, which is the route a lot of people go since cali is on the high end of the pay scale. it'll depend on what the lab you're at is like, obviously, but it is pretty difficult to get day shift positions since what a lot of places do is open internal applications for any night/evening shift people who want to move up. I work an evening shift of 2pm to 11pm and i really like it. A very common complaint i see is that there's no like... career ladder. if you're a bench tech. you're a bench tech. which sometimes gets parlayed into section leader, or section manager, but that's a years of experience thing.
My plan is to work in the same place for a couple of years so I feel more experienced, and then to take a few travel contracts which are shorter term higher pay. again, they're available pretty much anywhere, but sometimes the tradeoff is lower compensation or a worse shift or being in the middle of nowhere america. but i think it'll be fun to get paid to bop around the country for awhile. I like my job and I like that it's very secure, but I do plan to go back to school for Something Else at some point and probably shift careers. My review: good thing to do in your twenties! good thing to have under your belt in general. very dependable.
if you have other questions in general or about anything I said you can 100% msg me! Ik I had a lot of trouble finding info when I was looking into this as an undergrad
