I finally finished watching Babylon on Netflix UK. The ENDING! So many questions! I really wish they would do a follow up. Some things I’ve noted from the show:

- Finn can be appalling as a character but he’s also had a point. I hate him but I also love him 🤣

- Bertie Carvel is BRILLIANT (no surprise there).

- My jaw ached from watching too many gum chewing scenes (I’m looking at you Bertie).

- Jesse Armstrong wrote Babylon as a training wheel for Succession.

- I’ve lost track on how many times Jimmy Nesbitt played a copper (Babylon, Murphy’s Law, Bloodlands, Stay Close, Line of Duty and Lucky Man comes to mind) but he’s a great actor and his other projects where he didn’t play a copper were solidly good (Jekyll, Cold Feet, Bloody Sunday, The Missing, The Secret, Five Minutes of Heaven) , so I’ll let him pass 😌

- Nick Blood from Agents of SHIELD was in it and his character’s arc were good.

- Did Liz works for Instagram prior joining the Met police as director of communications or was I hallucinating?

- Daniel Kaluuya from Black Panther and Nope also in it.

- Trust no one at your workplace because walls have ears and you’ll never know who might stab you in the back.

- I also love Tony Forbes and secretly glad he’d done the right thing.

- I keep distracted by Bertie’s butt (*THAT* is a glorious butt. SORRY NOT SORRY).

Chapter Two:

Scotland Yard throw their own Christmas party the week after. Finn changes into his requisite sweater after work and takes himself down to the second floor, where the lackeys there have festooned the briefing hall with bunting and balloons. It's loud and crowded and he stays for precisely as long as it takes for both Charles and Liz to see him, avoiding any and all mistletoe, then escapes back to his office to finish the press release for tomorrow.

An hour or so later, Liz wanders in holding two polystyrene cups. Somewhere between when he last saw her and now she's acquired a Santa hat and reindeer antlers, and he gets a good look at her sweater for the first time: a green crewneck with, of all things, FRAGILE across the top, underneath which is a picture of the most god-awful fucking ugly lamp he's ever seen in his life, along with an assortment of snowflakes and baubles. He peers closer: the lamp has a fringe.

'What the fuck are you wearing?'

'My ugly sweater,' she says, depositing the cups on his desk. It's eggnog, of course. 'Hold on, check this out.' She presses the lamp's finial and the lampshade lights up, twinkling hellishly at him. Liz makes triumphant jazz hands. 'Tada.'

'…Why a lamp?' He doesn't really want to know, but there's a sort of morbid fascination.

'I'm guessing you've never seen A Christmas Story,' she says, making herself comfortable in one of his guest chairs. She turns the lamp off, mercifully.

I've been saying for years and years that modern TV owes everything to Babylon 5 and Oz.

Without those two paving the way 24, The Wire, Sopranos, Walking Dead, Lost, GoT etc etc etc probably wouldn't gave happened.

Listening to old Delta Flyers episodes and hearing Brannon Braga say that - aside form soaps, serialized television didn't happen until The Sopranos.

Babylon Zoo - Spaceman 1996

"Spaceman" is a song by British rockband Babylon Zoo, released on 15 January 1996 as the lead single from their debut album, The Boy with the X-Ray Eyes. Featuring heavily distorted guitars and metallic, robotic sounding vocals, the song entered the UK Singles Chart at number one following its use in a Levi's jeans television advertisement the previous year; "Spaceman" was the sixth song to reach number one in the UK after being featured in a Levi's advert.

It became the fastest-selling debut single in British pop music history, and the best-selling single in the UK in over thirty years, since the Beatles' "Can't Buy Me Love". "Spaceman" became a number one chart hit in 23 countries. MTV UK ranked "Spaceman" as the number-24 single of the 1990s. It was voted number 31 in a 2006 Channel 4 poll of the 50 best songs by one-hit wonders.

"Spaceman" recieved a total of 37,6% yes votes.

Did you ever watch/enjoy Red Dwarf or Babylon 5? Apologies if you've covered this before, just a random curiousity

I love Babylon 5; I only had time to watch the first two or so seasons of Red Dwarf before I had to leave the UK (and wasn't on Canadian netflix) and I'm told that it only gets really good after Kryten joins the cast.

The last episode of "Babylon 5" aired in the US (UK later) this day 25/11/98 (I hope this is right). Pic from one of many brilliant scenes with Bruce Boxleitner. The speech rings so true today. Terrific series.
