OOZEPUNK

WHAT IS OOZEPUNK?

Oozepunk is the term I'm coining for the microgenre of urban heroic sci-fi horror-fantasy that first exploded in the mid-80s with movies, shows, and comics like Ghostbusters, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Toxic Avenger, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Hellboy, Street Sharks, and others. Lots of natural crossover with Biopunk and Cyberpunk, aesthetically and philosophically.

Your childhood trauma didn't let you forget Roger Rabbit heavily featured colorful nightmare slime, did it?

A ragtag gang of weirdos (often horribly mutated--more on that soon) band together to save a city that doesn't understand them. Grimy sewers, abandoned buildings and graffiti'd brick walls are lit up by neon lights, streams of mysterious, glowing goo and/or the unearthly lights of futuristic particle weapons--ideally all of the above!

Beyond the "cracked concrete and gutters full of liquid plutonium" aesthetic, Oozepunk prankishly asks "What if catastrophic aberrations of science, particularly DUMPING TOXIC FUCKING WASTE STRAIGHT INTO THE ENVIRONMENT created fucked-up monsters... but they're HEROIC fucked-up monsters!" These catastrophic aberrations of science grant the heroes incredible powers, but COST them their place in human society. (Ghostbusters and Roger Rabbit eschew character mutation in favor of discovering that the undead and olde tymey cartoons are real [and exploitable!], respectively. 'Busters and 'Toon sympathizers alike are treated like insane idiots and/or frauds in their respective universes.)

Oozepunk heroes are challenged not only by strange supernatural beings, but by human society itself. The Ghostbusters battle with local politicians as much as they do the undead. In the recent (and delightful) TMNT: Mutant Mayhem, Splinter warns the Turtles of humans and their obsession with "milking" mutants for their blood--on top of the villainous mutants they're trying to thwart!

Crank up the creep factor in Oozepunk and you get awesome anti-establishment goo-horror like 1988's The Blob, The Stuff, Street Trash, and probably a bunch more. Toxic Avenger is a batshit crazy splatter-comedy (i.e. classic Troma)... and still garnered sequels, a kid's cartoon and toyline!

And there's a Shredder's Revenge-style Crusaders beat-em-up coming out next year??

This looks dope as shit

Ghostbusters and TMNT are the only current, "evergreen" (or radioactive green!) Oozepunk franchises I can think of off the top of my head, but Oozepunk elements are buried in almost all of the stories and settings I love the most. Heroic kaiju like King Kong, Godzilla and Gamera paved the way for our freaky friends, but so did comics characters like Fantastic Four's Ben "The Thing" Grimm, The Hulk and Swamp Thing. Hell, I think I blame SESAME STREET of all things for starting me down the Oozepunk path.

Surprise! I've loved screaming trash monsters with secret hearts of gold since I was a fucking baby, and they've ALWAYS been there for me!

But it's not just Oscar, Sesame Street as a whole is a proto-Oozepunk utopia, years before the big Ooze-splosion of the 80s. Muppets, monsters, talking animals and chill humans all live and work together to scrape by with a little dignity in a gritty-but-wholesome urban world!

Sesame Street, a decades-long reminder that educational childrens' programming can and SHOULD be cool as hell looking and loaded with all kinds of friendly mutant freakuloids.

songs from the greatest showman but it's a grimm troupe story. is this anything is this anything. these are genuine animatic ideas that have been rattling around in my head for a while that i May make someday.

a million dreams - baby grimm (the original) has a dream and starts a makeshift circus, the first iteration of the troupe. things go quite well at first and it's well-received by the bugs of whatever land grimm is from (this would be fun to design).

some sort of short interlude for maximum Drama

the other side - the circus is failing and grimm has just experienced a to-be-determined tragedy which has left him detached and jaded. he's approached in a dream by the nightmare's heart, which appears as an even-more-demonic version of the nightmare king and is eventually convinced to make a deal.

million dreams reprise - the first grimmchild is created. a few moments of sweetness, and then, heartbreakingly, the child's spirit dies, making way for the nightmare's heart and resurrection.

the greatest show OR come alive (greatest show is more iconic, but come alive talks about "dreaming" and such) - decades or centuries later, the grimm troupe is at the height of their powers. grimm is a magnificent ringmaster, other members of the troupe are introduced, and the switch in singers in "the greatest show) is illustrated by a flawless resurrection of grimm into the child. good place to toss some character cameos and ocs.

not sure what song for this; maybe set to some dialogue from the movie or to a different source entirely. major conflict occurs, grimm splits from the nightmare's heart to save ghost's grimmchild (as seen in the game).

from now on - the heart is gone, the troupe has been freed from its service, and grimm and those that stayed (notably, brumm/nymm, divine, and the grimmchild themself) are left in dirtmouth to reflect, come to terms with themselves, and pick up the pieces. grollow crumbs could be added other characters from the game show up to grimm and the troupe rebuild; the troupe eventually begins journeying to find the places where they are from ("and we will come back home")

these are very rough crumbs, but i think this would be a very fun project for me someday! feedback and suggestions are welcome (no promises if i'll take them but i like hearing people's ideas), this is just a silly AU because i love grimm and the troupe and i want more of them. also, i need silksong and this is how i'm coping.

5+ headcanons au prompt: roleswap/capitalswap AU where radiance and pk trade plot relevance and crystal peak is a capital settlement au. OR if you dont feel like doin that one, ghost goes back in time 2 fix things au. or both

the radiance caught attention falling from the sky. not many were up there to see but god damn did she leave an impression.

the pale king thought he could deal with this pushy new higher being. after all, he managed to work with everyone around him, even those who didn't care for him. so he dealt with her non-confrontationally, even inviting her to the palace when it was clear she was...hanging around.

this is how she discovered the void! and also got rid of pk. the void was terrifying, he was fucking around with it, so she literally just followed him with a few converts and nailed him herself (or, rather, sun-blasted) and had the others drag him and throw him in. Problem Solved, Her Kingdom Now

the radiance knew myla. the both actually went through the capital and the radiance was. the radiance. and myla was a random resident who sang and bowed but wasn't as worshipful as everyone else, which she found weird and fascinating.

the mantis tribe is much more hostile to the probably-baby-seer player. impossible to deal with peacefully unless she meets up with the lords' heir (the lover of an old pale knight) and she manages to distract others, letting her sneak through.

the white palace still exists in the real world but it's an end-game place, drowned in risen void.

crystal peak is fuckin. bright. like. god damn. the higher you go the harder it is to see, genuinely. a key progress item is a dark veil (b/c they don't have sunglasses).

the pale ore equiv is like. plumes of essence.

also it's just harder to get essence in general. less memories to make spirits or let dream roots actually grow.

naturally, the whole place isn't called hallownest anymore. i can't think of a name but it's probably...gaudy.

rather than quirrel, a small grimm (or rather large grimmchild?) is met throughout areas to chatter with about how fascinating the layers of ruins are, and that it runs thick with nightmares and regrets.

Pain of an extinguished flame

TW: CHILD DEATH, INFECTION, NO HAPPY ENDING

Grimm was sat in his tent, reading a book he had bought from Sly when his child flew in wailing. The nightmare King looked up immediately and gasped; seeing his baby infected by the Radiance's horrid disease "my child..no..nonono.. baby..come to papa..." he said, shakily holding his arms out. The Grimmchild let out a pained cry as they flew to him. "Pa...hurt..." they uttered out, infected tears streaming from their big crimson eyes.

Grimm could only cry, this was something he usually refused to let anyone see. He cried as he tried using magic to reverse the effects "hold tight my child..papa's here...I'll- I..I'll save you..." Grimm choked out a sob as he spoke; making false promises as he tried saving the Grimmchild. The small baby let out one last cry as they died, head nuzzled in Grimm's warm hand. The moment the King of Nightmares felt his child's flame no longer burning all he could do is scream. The loud cry echoing throughout the small village, alerting the few residents who lived there and the rest of the GrimmTroupe.

Weeks had passed, and as expected Grimm had not gotten better but instead got worse. Barely leaving the back of his tent, refusing to eat or sleep and crying almost every day. "Master..I have something for you..to help with the grief.." a familiar voice said, it was Divine and in her hands was a handmade plush of The Grimmchild. She handed it over to Grimm, a sad look in her eyes as she watched her boss just silently sob while hugging the small doll. Grimm mumbled out a small thanks before shooing Divine away as he continued to cry until he collapsed.

Slow day at work + lots of colorful sharpies = time to revamp an old OC

Blue Jay was one of the first OCs I posted on here a few years ago. She's my Hollow Knight vessel! I changed her looks to be a little more in tune with the proportions of the characters in the game and a little less creepy, plus a better outfit. She's still using her Lifeblood branch bow with key arrows, though!

Like before, Jay is a human crossbreed. The Pale King realized Hollow wouldn't work and, at some point in the years of infection, tried to reach out to other planes out of desperation. Jay was born a normal looking human before an incident with Ghost dream-nailing some of Pale King's stuff brought her to Hallownest. This almost killed her, being a different brand of existence and soul, and Ghost dumped her in a bunch of Soul Springs and Lifeblood to heal her, making her what she is now.

She's besties with Quirrel, who is eager to study her background academically, and falls in love with Grimm after she and Ghost help him break the cycle of the Nightmare Heart. Her ending is a combination of stalling Hollow for the main story and making time for Ghost to become the Void King in the DLC, which I headcanon Ghost as being in total control of so that all siblings can be happy and alive together. She annoys Hornet by desperately trying to be sister besties, too. Her name--Jay--is a reference to Blue Jays swapping babies in the nest!

Bug ask but also a wack family dynamic ask: Okay Grimm right? The guy with the fire baby? (Whose referred to as Grimmchild) so the process of raising his kid is a bit funky. First their troupe must be summoned and then Grimm and the summoner enter a co-parenting deal. The summoner then has to feed Grimmchild nightmare essence and then kill Grimm in combat feeding Grimmchild the ashes of their father to transfer the nightmare heart and the title of troupe master over to Grimmchild.

So this is already a bit wacky but hey at least Grimm will (literally) die for his kid so that's already an improvement over the majority of parents in hollow knight (also this whole ritual is a mandatory thing as Grimmchild likely won't survive to adulthood without the nightmare heart being transferred over)

But then we got to the problem with the summoner in this case being Ghost. Who's also a kid.

Now we don't know if Grimm recognises that ghost is a kid, since a lot of characters don't since there are adults who are as short or shorter than ghost (eg. Sly is pushing 60 and is still shorter than ghost (can still kick your ass tho))

(okay the next part is just projection) but like imagine ghost who's already used to getting treated like they are older than they are getting handed this toddler. Sure they're a toddler with wings and also fire breath but still a toddler. But ghost, the kid with pale king as their dad, gets really attached to the idea of being a parent that they make it a big part of their identity, and this only gets worse when Grimmchild, again a toddler, calls them something along the lines of papa.

Idk I just find the concept of ghost and Grimmchild growing a bit older (ghost mid teens and Grimmchild like 10) and ghost brings up the fact that Grimmchild once called them dad asking if they see them as a parental figure and Grimmchild goes nah you're more like a big friend and ghost just silently crumples like a wet piece of paper

(they go crying to hornet asking if they're a bad parent and hornet goes what are you talking about you're not a parent and ghost just crumples even further in on themselves)

sorry for avoiding this ask i got overwhelmed by the LOTS OF TEXT lmao.

anyway: sounds fucked! reminds me of when my little sister called me mom, it was really uncomfortable but if it'd been a different kid I think I would've gotten WAY TOO ATTACHED. man, I wish i could eat my parents.

also, IS ghost a kid?? i thought ghost was like a vessel born/created as an adult. then again i've never played the game so fuck do i know.

He had been curious of this fearless little thing. One who traversed the nightmare realm with no nightmares of its own. Then he had thought to groom the little one, guide it through its recent ascension into something that would destroy the dream that kept banishing it here....or at the very least sow the seeds of fear and nurture them into powerful nightmare flames for his heart to devour.

He wasn’t supposed to get attached.
