Height Headcanons
The Outsiders
(These are all during the book)
Pony- solid 5’5- I honestly forgot how his height is described minus being taller than Johnny.. so I think he’d be just average ish for his age
Soda- 5’9 is average ish so.. he’s what girls expect? He’s standard? But he does give a shorter vibe which is why he’s not taller
Darry- 6’2 do I need to explain?
Two-Bit: 5’11 he’s just lanky I can’t see him as being short
Dallas- 5’10 I feel like he’s sort of lean but not too tall, just above average.. intimidating presence but not a wall like Darry and not quite Two-Bit’s height
Steve- 5’7 he should be shorter but I think he should at least be taller than Pony.. give him that
Johnny- 5’4 he would have had some more growing to do, but he’d always be below average
Tim- 5’11 intimidating, sort of lean but more wall-like than Dallas.
Curly- 5’6 he has more growing to do, but not a lot.. he is pissed about his height ngl
Angela- 5’2 I don’t think she’d be above average
Cherry- 5’5 I think she’d be taller because she’d wear heels often but this is her actual height
Marcia- 5’7 she gives either short or tall vibes but I don’t like huge height differences for ships.. I’m sorry but I do ship Marbit on the side and 4 inches is enough..
Bob- 6’0 I think it’s important for the story- he needs to really look over both Johnny and Ponyboy, but I also want Darry to be a greater presence (to those against him anyway) so that’s why he’s shorter than him.
Randy- 5’11, similar build to Two-Bit, lanky
Sylvia- 5’9 no question.. just trust me I know she told me
Evie- 5’1 someone had to be my height okay
Sandy- 5’4 she, like Soda, is good looking so I think she should be about average so she’s perceived as the standard
Tex (please let there be someone who cares about Tex lol)
Tex- 5’6 I imagine him to have a sturdy, decent build like Pony, but be a little taller, maybe just a little muscular- he’s not in peak form but he’s well off
Mason- he was in basketball.. 6’1.. he’s slim but lean and able to kick butt
Johnny- 5’7, him and Tex are of similar build.. if they grew up together and are still friends, I’d like to represent them growing together metaphorically and literally
Jamie- 5’6 1/2, she’s gotta be taller than Tex I feel it in my bones.. but her brother is taller than her
Cole- 6’2 built like a brick wall- I want him to be taller than Mason because it’s kind of who he wants to be, literally looking up to him(at least I think, I don’t remember everything)
Robert- tbh I forgot who he was mostly.. I’m so sorry but I think he’d be 5’10
Pop- 5’10 this has a purpose. Mason is quite literally growing past him, resenting him for not living his other son, while during most of the book, Tex is stuck looking up to him
Lem.. nobody likes you but here- 5’9 just your average absolute slimeball (nobody likes Pop either I just forgot to put that because I got off on a ramble about symbolism through height..)
Mrs. Johnson- 5’7 (with heels nobody knows her real height), kind of an adult that is helpful to Tex so she’s taller than him.. you get what I’m saying, sort of like Pop
I had to look on the wiki to remember everyone, hopefully that’s everyone who’s important
Rumble Fish (I have a bad memory.. hopefully all the details are right)
Motorcycle Boy- everything hinges on his height, because everyone looks up to him. 6’3 final height (taller than Darry.. more separate from his world.. away from others.. you get it)
Rusty James- he grows to be as tall as Motorcycle Boy, emphasizing his ‘becoming’ him.. but during the book- main events anyway, he’s 5’7, tall for his age
Steve- 5’3 he’s short, sort of removed from Rusty, different
Patty- 5’5
Smokey- sort of under the radar and clever, so I’ll put him at 5’5 ‘under’ Rusty.. hopefully that makes sense
Biff- 5’11
B.J.- he’s probably like 5’6, above Smokey because he’s loyal, not low to the ground like a snake (I’m not making fun of short people I am one it’s just for metaphorical purposes)
Mr. James- sort of different like Motorcycle Boy, keeps up better than Rusty James if I remember correctly.. 5’10, closer to him
Mrs. James- idk I don’t remember but let’s say 5’7
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just noticed the error with Mrs. James- please ignore the pictured height for her

Advice for Coming Up with Informative Character Names
Tumblr media
Remus Lupin is the name of a werewolf in the Harry Potter series. The name Remus comes from a figure in Roman mythology who was raised by wolves. The name Lupin means “wolf” in latin.
His name is Wolf-boy Wolf and yet the reveal that he’s a werewolf comes as a shock to both characters and readers at the end of the book where he’s first introduced.
Many authors try to do this: give characters names that, in some way, reveal who their characters are.
After all, you want a name to match the character it’s describing. That only helps to enhance the story you’re telling, right?
Not always.
George Lucas is another good example of an author who prefers his names to be informative. “Han Solo” “Luke Skywalker” “Darth Vader.” He’s also a good example at someone who doesn’t always get it right.
Here’s a story from a meeting at LucasArts:
“In one viewing of Fracture, [Lucas] said it looked really good, but he didn’t like [Mason Briggs’] name. We’re like, ‘What do you mean, George?’ He responded to the effect of, ‘It doesn’t really fit. When he jumps on stuff, he moves pretty fast. I like B.J. Dart.’
In the same article, Lucas tries to name some bad guys:
He threw out ‘Darth Icky’ and ‘Darth Insanius.’ There was a pregnant pause in the room after that. People waiting for George to say ‘just kidding,’ but it never comes, and he just moved on to another point.
So how do you create Remus Lupins and avoid Darth Ickys?
1. An informative name should be a step ahead of the reader.
Reading The Prisoner of Azkaban, Lupin’s identity reveal was shocking because as eight year-olds, most of us had no idea what Remus Lupin meant.
Eight year olds and ten year olds--even people in their twenties and thirties--aren’t familiar with latin and roman mythology.
That’s what made it seem brilliant when we finally discovered the truth months/years/weeks after we’d read Prisoner. That big reveal was right under our noses the entire time and we never even guessed.
If you want to give your character a name that rewards a reader for their study or knowledge, like Remus Lupin, it needs to be a name that isn’t going to be obvious for a large majority of its intended audience. It needs to be a step ahead of the reader by being just a bit cleverer than them.
If you don’t intend for the name to be an easter-egg rewarding a reader, you might try treating that name like a piece of exposition. Take, for instance “Luna Lovegood.” If I remember correctly, a moment after we learn her real name, we learn that other characters call her “Loony Lovegood.” This nickname immediately tells the reader about her personality, and about how the other characters in the story perceive her, before we ever get to know her. And in a different way, the writing steps ahead of the reader by connecting the character with the name before they have a chance to say “A bad guy? Named Draco Malfoy? Isn’t that a bit on the nose?”
In addition to being ripe for mockery for the poorly chosen initials: B.J. Dart isn’t particularly clever. It doesn’t tell the readers anything they won’t already know about the character. In no way does it enhance the storytelling.
2. An informative name should blend in with the rest of the names in the universe.
This is why “Han Solo” works and “Han Alone” doesn’t. The characters Han Solo and Greedo (another informative name) are introduced within a few minutes of each other. Although their names have real-world meanings, they compliment each other, and form the beginning of a naming convention that helps build a world and a culture. Eventually, the universe was filled with names with 2-syllables and an ‘o’ on the end: Holdo, Tiko, Erso, Kylo, among many others.
When a name becomes part of the world, its association with its English meaning loses some importance. Once the reader/viewer is able to recognize the name as just an average, Star Wars name, it becomes almost easy for the English meaning to slide over someone’s head while enjoying the story. Then, they might have a palm-to-forehead moment where they think “duh the bounty hunter’s name was greedo.” (Although this sort of thing is far easier to get away with in a movie than it is in a book.)
3. An informative name should fit tonally.
No one is going to be intimidated by a bad guy named Darth Icky. It just isn’t going to happen. Nor are we going to take a character seriously if they say “Darth Icky?! We don’t stand a chance against that guy!” Darth Maul on the other hand? Dude sounds scary. If the protagonist tells me they’re afraid of Darth Maul, I’ll probably believe them.
Similarly, Luke Starkiller doesn’t sound like the nicest guy. Luke Skywalker? He sounds a little friendlier.
Make sure your reader feels what you want them to feel when they see a character’s name. If the name sounds funny, they’re going to laugh at it, and the character too, even if they’re supposed to be scary.
On this sort of thing, you’ll have to go with your gut and listen to your beta readers. Maybe pay attention if everyone in the room is staring at you like they’re waiting for the punchline.
~~~~~~~~~~
I don’t pretend to be an expert on what makes some names work and what makes others fall flat. Honestly, I think making names like Remus Lupin work is harder than ever. J.K. Rowling upped the ante for all of us. She certainly wasn’t the first person to do it, but she made clever, informative names popular in a way I don’t think it’d quite been before. Readers are far more aware of informative names now, and expect more from them. I don’t know what to do about that. But if you’re having some trouble getting your names right, these are three things you should consider.
Review
Sunday at the Sunflower Inn by Jodi Thomas
 What is better than a wonderful small-town romance? Exactly what happened in this book…more than one romance happening in that wonderful small town!
 What I liked:
* The return to Honey Creek…the wonderful small town with romances happening
* The couples that found their HEA-HFN
* McCoy Mason: builder, loner, injured, just out of the hospital, rootless, in Honey Creek to heal with his crusty distant grandfather
* Sadler Mason: McCoy’s grandfather, owner of historical property, under pressure from big business to sell, a quiet man deeper than he appears
* John Mason: McCoy’s father…would like to get to know him better
* Melody Avenida: seventeen, in love, has controlling parents, in love with Mike
* Michael Alderton: Army Private, foster system graduate, loves Melody
* Jessica Ann Mackenzie – Jam – café owner, single, has dreams with roots in Honey Creek
* Tucson Smith – Army Sergeant, career military, CID officer, travels the world, big and a bit abrasive with a soft center – for Jam.
* Mr. Winston: so nice to catch up with this warm, generous, caring man and watching his journey with Miss Lilly
* Seeing how Pecos and his family are doing
* The “murder” mystery
* The Mason family history and learning why the land is so important to them
* The fairy girls and their story
* Doc Baylor Blanton: veterinarian, kind, loves animals, might have an interest in a cowboy that is not a cowboy
* Roberto and his cousin, Leo, that helped McCoy out in the beginning of the book
* That the story was believable, drew me in, made me care, and fall in love with the characters
* All of it really except…
 What I didn’t like:
* Everything I was meant not to like…won’t list the people or events but there were a few
* Having to wait for the next book in the series
 Did I like this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Definitely!
 Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington-Zebra for the ARC – This is my honest review.
 5 Stars
     BLURB
 Fans of Carolyn Brown and B.J. Daniels will adore this slice of Americana delivered with warmth, endearing characters, and authentic Texan flair. The legendary New York Times and USA Today bestselling author brings a sense of nostalgia to the town in this delightful journey of second chances. Jessica Ann McKenzie—“Jam” to everyone in Honey Creek—has fulfilled her dream of owning the best restaurant for miles around. Serving candlelit dinners to every couple in town on Valentine’s Day is a reminder of another dream, one she’s just about given up on. Until, that very night, Sergeant Tucson Smith clambers out of the muddy river and onto her land, bringing the promise of something they’ve both been searching for. When McCoy Mason crashes on Interstate 45, he doesn’t just bust up his Mustang, his leg, and his relationship. He also loses his prospects of a job and apartment in Houston. Honey Creek, home to his estranged grandfather, offers a temporary respite, a place to recover before moving on again. After all, what permanent use could a town so picture-perfect have for a man like him? At sixty-seven, Charles H. Winston III lives by order and routine. One of his most cherished rituals is a regular lunch date with three lovely ladies at the Honey Creek Café, including the very proper Miss Lilly Lambert. But it’s not too late to surprise the whole town—or himself—by seizing a chance for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. And there’s no better season than spring, when the warm breeze blowing in from the Brazos River brings fresh hope and second chances to those who need them most . . .
90 In 30: Steelers 2021 Training Camp Preview Series: Benny Snell Jr., Robert Spillane, Donovan Stiner
Tumblr media
The Pittsburgh Steelers’ 2021 offseason practices have long since concluded. Next up for the team is their annual training camp, which should get underway in the latter part of July. Ahead of training camp, we will preview the team’s 90-man roster three players at a time for you as part of a 30-post series. This Steelers 90-man roster preview that includes outlooks for each player goes alphabetically by last name to make it easy to follow along with. The next three players we will preview today are Benny Snell Jr., Robert Spillane, and Donovan Stiner. RB Benny Snell Jr. — Snell’s second season in the NFL with the Steelers included the former fourth-round draft pick out of Kentucky registering 111 carries for 368 yards and four touchdowns. Snell also logged 10 receptions for another 61 yards in the 281 total offensive snaps that played during the 2020 regular season. On top of that offensive playing time that Snell received in 2020, he also logged 198 total special teams snaps. He had five total tackles on special teams in 2020 and also recovered a fumble. Overall, Snell’s play was average in 2020 just like all of the other running backs used by the Steelers in 2020. Outlook: Snell will be battling for one of three or four running back spots this summer and essentially for the right to backup rookie running back Najee Harris, the team’s first-round draft pick this year. Snell’s immediate competition for a 2021 roster spot this summer includes Anthony McFarland Jr., Jaylen Samuels, and newcomer Kalen Ballage. Snell is a willing and able special teams player and with 2021 being the running backs third year in Pittsburgh, he should have a better than average chance of sticking on the roster again this season and dressing weekly for games as either the second or third string running back behind Harris. assuming Snell does stick on the roster again this season, he might be hard pressed to see 100 touches as long as long as Harris stays healthy. ILB Robert Spillane — Spillane made the Steelers roster in 2020 as a backup behind starting inside linebackers Devin Bush and Vince Williams and that meant the plan for him was to mostly contribute on special teams. When Bush was lost for the season in Week 6 to a knee injury, Spillane was jettisoned into the starting lineup, and he even was the defensive quarterback for several games until a knee injury of his own in Week 13 forced him to the team’s Reserve/Injured list for the final three regular season games. While Spillane did return for the Steelers’ Super Wild Card game, he was very ineffective in that contest and played poorly. He ended the regular season with 43 total tackles on defense and two sacks. He was credited with four tackles for loss, three quarterback hits, four passes defensed, a fumble recovery and one interception, which he returned for a touchdown. Spillane also had two total special teams tackles on the season. He played 377 total defensive snaps during the regular season and 153 more on special teams. In the Steelers’ lone playoff game, Spillane played another 59 defensive snaps and 12 others on special teams. He registered nine total tackles in that contest. Outlook: The summer outlook for Spillane begins with him needing to compete for the right to be the Steelers’ other starting inside linebacker beside Bush. Competing against Spillane for that job figures to be veteran Vince Williams and maybe even third-year player Ulysees Gilbert III if he stays healthy. If Spillane ultimately wins that other staring spot this summer, and he has decent shot at doing so, he will obviously then be expected to play quite extensively in 2021. If, however, Spillane fails to win the starting spot beside Bush, he will likely enter the regular season as the top inside linebacker backup. He’ll also likely be asked to play quite extensively on special teams in 2021 as he is an above average player in that phase of the game. S Donovan Stiner — Stiner, one of the Steelers’ higher-priority undrafted free agent signings this offseason, played his college football at Florida. The safety finished his college career with 145 total tackles and six interceptions in playing in 41 games played. At his Pro Day, Stiner measured in at 6014, 205 pounds. He reportedly ran his 40-yard dash in 4.58 seconds and did 15 reps on the bench. Outlook: Stiner will be battling for a backup safety spot during training camp and the preseason. While he is versatile safety, Stiner might be better suited to player closer to the line of scrimmage than deep. His best shot at making the 53-man roster in the coming weeks likely revolves around him being top-notch special teams contributor and one that can play on all four units. The best bet when it comes to Stiner’s future come the start of the regular season is that he lands on the Steelers practice squad. That would give him a chance to develop for a full season. 90 In 30: Steelers 2021 Training Camp Preview Series: Najee Harris, Pressley Harvin III, Dwayne Haskins
Tumblr media
The Pittsburgh Steelers’ 2021 offseason practices concluded last week. Next up for the team is their annual training camp, which should get underway in the latter part of July. Ahead of training camp, we will preview the team’s 90-man roster three players at a time for you as part of a 30-post series. This Steelers 90-man roster preview that includes outlooks for each player goes alphabetically by last name to make it easy to follow along with. The next three players we will preview today are Najee Harris, Pressley Harvin III, and Dwayne Haskins. RB Najee Harris — The Steelers made Harris their first-round selection in 2021. During the 2020 season, Harris, an Alabama product, rushed for 1,387 yards and 24 touchdowns and he also caught 36 passes for another 346 yards and three touchdowns. For his college career, Harris, who is listed at 6014, 230-pounds, rushed for 3,764 yards and 44 touchdowns in addition to catching 73 passes for 702 yards and another 10 touchdowns. Harris also registered 26 runs of 20 yards or longer during his college career at Alabama. He is the first running back that the Steelers have drafted in the first round since Rashard Mendenhall in 2008. Outlook: As a rookie, Harris is expected to touch the football around 300 time in total for the Steelers. He should be the Steelers bell-cow running back right out of the chute in 2021 and that means logging at least 80 percent of all offensive snaps every week. Harris should have a good chance at setting new Steelers rookie rushing and total yards from scrimmage records in 2021 if he stays healthy. There’s also a chance that Harris winds up in the running to be voted the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2021 as well. P Pressley Harvin III — Harvin, the Steelers seventh round draft pick this year, is listed at a whopping 6’0, 255 pounds and was a four-year starter at Georgia Tech. For his career, he averaged 44.7 yards per punt. Last season, he exploded for a career-best 48 yards per attempt. He won the Ray Guy Award for top punter in college football and was a unanimous All-American selection. Harvin was widely considered to be one of the top three punters in the 2021 draft class. Outlook: Harvin will be expected to beat out punter Jordan Berry this summer in training camp. The Steelers attempted to stray from Berry at the start of the 2020 season but the punter the veteran player they signed to replace him, Dustin Colquitt, was even worse. The Steelers re-signed Berry a few weeks into the 2020 season, and he remained the team’s punter the rest of the year. The Steelers invested a seventh-round draft pick in Harvin, so odds are good he’ll stick barring any wild inconsistencies during training camp and the preseason. QB Dwayne Haskins — The Steelers signed Haskins, a former first round draft in 2019 out of Ohio State by the Washington Football Team, to a one-year contract back for the minimum in March following his release from the team that originally selected him. Haskins struggled mightily with Washington during the 2020 season, completing just 61% of his passes with five touchdowns and seven interceptions. In his 16 career NFL starts, Haskins has just 12 touchdown passes and 14 interceptions. With Washington, Haskins had 2,804 passing yards and a 3-10 record as a starter. Outlook: Haskins should battle fellow Steelers backup quarterback Joshua Dobbs during training camp and the preseason for the right to be the team’s third-string signal caller in 2021. Haskins possesses a great arm, but he lacks good and consistent accuracy. He also has some issues reading NFL defenses to date and adjusting to what he sees on the fly. Haskins is a cheap lottery ticket for the Steelers. Should Haskins wind up beating out Dobbs this summer, the former first round draft pick might have a shot to be the team’s starter in 2022. It’s hard to imagine Haskins playing any meaningful snaps in 2021 for the Steelers unless injuries are suffered by fellow quarterbacks Ben Roethlisberger and Mason Rudolph.
