Not to point out other Vietnamese words that people tend to mispronounce, but I often hear “Banh Mi” (Pronounced something like “Bahn Me”) pronounced “bon me”

I know people are trying their best because Viet is a terrible, terrible language but it does always surprise me a little bit lol

Does anyone have a really good bánh mì recipe? Had a really good one a while ago and can’t replicate it with the recipes on the internet so hoping someone on here can help!!

Bánh mì has a wide variety of fillings, and sometimes I think even though I am Vietnamese and I eat bánh mì nearly every week (when I was in high school, I ate this every day for breakfast 😂), I still didn't try all of the fillings yet 😂

In this sweet sapphic romance about two foodies in love, Vivi meets Lan while studying abroad in Vietnam and they spend the semester unraveling their families’ histories—and eating all the street food in Sài Gòn.

In Sài Gòn, Lan is always trying to be the perfect daughter, dependable and willing to care for her widowed mother and their bánh mì stall. Her secret passion, however, is A Bánh Mì for Two, the food blog she started with her father but has stopped updating since his passing.

Meanwhile, Vietnamese American Vivi Huynh, has never been to Việt Nam. Her parents rarely talk about the homeland that clearly haunts them. So Vivi secretly goes to Vietnam for a study abroad program her freshman year of college. She’s determined to figure out why her parents left, and to try everything she’s seen on her favorite food blog, A Bánh Mì for Two.

When Vivi and Lan meet in Sài Gòn, they strike a deal. Lan will show Vivi around the city, helping her piece together her mother’s story through crumbling photographs and old memories. Vivi will help Lan start writing again so she can enter a food blogging contest. And slowly, as they explore the city and their pasts, Vivi and Lan fall in love.

my review:

I’ve been mutuals with Trinity for years, and I’m so happy to be able to review her debut! I’ve been so excited to read this book for YEARS; it seemed tailor-made to be one of my favorite things and it did not disappoint. Gorgeously written, A Bánh Mì for Two is a sweet love story about two girls falling in love as they (re)discover the magic of Sài Gòn.

Lan has been working herself ragged caring for her mother and running their bánh mì stall in the bustling streets of Sài Gòn. Whenever she manages some free time for herself, she writes on her blog A Bánh Mì for Two although she hasn’t been feeling very inspired to write lately. Meanwhile, inspired by her favorite blog, Vivi has come to Sài Gòn on a study abroad trip, which would be against her mother’s wishes if she knew Vivi was there. She’s determined to find her mother’s family and learn the history that her mother won’t tell her. When she meets Lan and realizes she’s her favorite blogger, they agree to help each other, slowly growing closer.

A Bánh Mì for Two was such a gorgeously written story; I’m so excited to read more from this author! Both Lan and Vivi have their own respective character arcs that we follow, and I really liked both of their points-of-view. Lan has become a bit dispirited with her life with so many worries. When Vivi comes into her life, she learns to fall in love with her city again, as Vivi herself is discovering the magic of Sài Gòn for the first time.

Listing my top three favorite foods I've tasted in Hanoi, Vietnam, so I can't forget...

1. Cha ca La Vong, or fried fish with turmeric and dill, which we tried at a restaurant called Cha Ca Thang Long. It was included in the Michelin Guide ceremony 2023 as an inspector’s favorite with good quality cooking for good value. Highly recommended!

2. Bún chả, a Vietnamese dish of grilled pork and rice noodles. In one week, I think we ordered this more than Pho noodles or Banh Mi.

3. Bánh xèo, Vietnamese Pancake with Shrimp... when eaten, it melts in the mouth mixed with spices and herbs.

I WANT TO VOMIT THAT WAS SO SWEET. also im on the verge of fucking bawling. i’m literally shaking trying to stop the tears thanks pristiq 🥹👍

i think this book really hit me hard for three main reasons;

i’m a fat fucking lesbian

i am fatherless and relate to a lot of the guilt lan feels about her parents & that familial need to look after the family

i very much relate to vivi’s yearning for home, and feeling split between two countries. my grandparents fled yugoslavia post-WW2 and have never told my mum or i anything about family stories. i’m so serious only a week ago i found out my great uncle’s name. like they say NOTHING about OUR history. only my grandparents migrated here, so they’re the only relatives i have, much like vivi. so i very much feel the yearning for knowledge and connection that vivi does. 

i had a beautiful time reading this. reading about lan and vivi’s blossoming romance was so sweet, mixed with their sight seeing UGH IT WAS SO CUTE. god this was such a lighthearted read which i needed!!!! the children yearn for soft sapphic romances!!!!

i think the only thing holding this book back from 5-stars for me is the pacing. this shit went by WAYYYY too fast. which yeah i mean that can be because their romance was fast but….. idk i felt like some plot points weren’t fleshed out enough, and for the length of this book either some plot points needed to be chopped or the book length extended or…. man idk i am not a writer. but like idk lan’s revelation surrounding her father’s death, or vivi’s feelings towards her mother all being fully fleshed out and resolved in one chapter meant it happened way too fast and was a bit jarring. the speed at which things happened emotionally for characters kind of threw me out of the book? like yes the fast-paced nature worked for sight-seeing, but for the character’s growth it felt too fast. i still fell in love with the characters, but i don’t know if i can get over just how… rushed this book felt at points.

anyways im really craving some banh mi rn catch me placing a cheeky ubereats order at 11:30pm 😋😋

Hy vọng, ở một thế giới song song nào đó, em có thể dễ dàng kể với anh những ấm ức trong lòng.

Trong thế giới đó, chắc hẳn chúng mình sẽ thật tự do nhỉ, chẳng thuộc về ai cả, cũng không cần phải thuộc về nhau. Chúng mình sẽ ở cạnh nhà nhau trên một con đường có hàng hoa giấy. Mỗi chiều em sẽ thấy anh mặc sơ mi trắng chạy xe qua nhà em, còn em thì đang tưới hoa trong sân nhà.

Em sẽ mở một tiệm sách, sẽ để dành riêng cho anh một góc nhỏ để cuối tuần anh đến. Em pha hai tách trà hoa quả, chúng mình ngồi lại cùng đọc sách rồi kể nhau nghe những bề bộn của một tuần đã qua. Em sẽ móc len, việc đan len khiến em cảm thấy mệt mỏi nhưng móc len thì lại khác. Em sẽ làm mấy bó hoa nho nhỏ bằng len cắm trong bình, ai mua thì em bán, ai thích thì em cho.

Đến mùa đông, em sẽ trang trí cửa tiệm để chào đón giáng sinh thật sớm. Em sẽ mua một cây thông to to, treo thật nhiều đèn và quả cầu thủy tinh rồi trải một tấm thảm thật êm để nằm ở đó ngắm nhìn mấy ánh đèn lấp lánh.

Anh sẽ ghé qua với một túi bánh cá nhân đậu đỏ còn nóng hổi, chúng mình sẽ cùng ngồi ở trước hiên nhà ăn, em thích nhân đậu đỏ lắm, anh biết mà.

Em sẽ mặc váy thật dài, đeo khăn choàng thật ấm, tô đôi má phớt hồng. Em thích mấy thứ mềm mềm và ấm áp, nên cứ chờ mãi đến đến mùa đông anh ạ. Ước chi có thể uống ca cao nóng mỗi ngày mà không phải mệt mỏi vì thời tiết nóng.

Em sẽ mua một tấm thảm thật to, chúng mình cùng nhau leo lên ngọn đồi cao cao, nhìn thành phố sáng đèn mù sương bên dưới. Ngắm chán chê thì sẽ nằm xuống, nhìn lên bầu trời lấp lánh ánh sao. Em thích trời sao lắm anh ạ, nhưng mấy ánh đèn thành phố khiến mấy vì sao bỏ em đi đâu mất.

Em sẽ nướng bánh nhé, bánh táo nóng hổi, không ngọt ngấy. Em muốn có một chiếc lò nướng nhỏ thuộc về riêng mình. Nấu nướng xong thì dọn dẹp thật sạch, bếp núc sẽ sạch thơm với mấy bộ nồi gốm nho nhỏ. Em ghét cái cảm giác người khác bày biện nấu ăn mà không dọn, ghét cái cảm giác thấy mấy thứ linh tinh nằm rơi vãi xuống sàn nhà.

Em sẽ nhờ anh lắp một chiếc kệ lên tường phòng tắm cho em, loại không bị ghỉ í. Lắp thêm vài cái móc để em treo túi thơm và bông tắm. Phòng tắm sẽ gọn gàng ngăn nắp, trên kệ có sữa tắm, sữa dưỡng thể, body mix mà em yêu thích.

À còn lắp thêm một cái gương thật to ở bồn rửa mặt, thêm một cái tủ nhiều ngăn kế bên. Em sẽ để mấy lọ mỹ phẩm em hay dùng, để giấy lau và mấy thứ linh tinh nữa. Mỗi lần rửa mặt xong sẽ tiện tay lau một tí, chứ chẳng phải đủ thứ đồ nghiêng ngả bị người khác dùng chung như bây giờ.

Ở thế giới song song đó, em chỉ thuộc về chính em thôi. Em thật sự quá ghét cái cảm giác phải chia sẻ không gian sống với những người chẳng biết gì là gọn gàng. Ghét quá anh ạ.
