Entry 102: The Silent Support

Revelation Chapter 12: Frozen Sea

While the gang is sailing to Cheve, Sakura recommends Corrin rests. That was a random twenty second scene. Suddenly, the boat crashes into an iceberg. The boat sinks, leaving Corrin and Jakob clutching a door floating in the freezing water. Jakob lets go and dies and yes he had to do that I don’t care that there was enough space on the door the extra weight would have sunk do you understand what buoyancy is?

Camilla shows up, acting on orders from Garon to kill Corrin. Also Flora is there and was the one who froze the sea. Garon said he’d execute the entire Ice Tribe if Flora didn’t kill Corrin, meaning that the ice tribe is all going to die I guess.

This battle has the party start on boats and have to fend off enemies charging the boat for six turns until Dragon Veins appear and allow the party to advance. Camilla, her retainers, and Flora are all fightable. If Corrin fights Camilla, Camilla says she's so glad that Corrin is still alive before saying to leave it to her to kill them. Camilla is the worst. Flora doesn't have any special dialogue with Felicia, Corrin, or Jakob, which sucks.

After the battle, Camilla asks Corrin to kill her, because she and her retainers will be executed if they go home without Corrin’s head, because Garon does not tolerate failure, and she wants to die by Corrin’s hand. Friendly reminder that you fight and defeat Camilla twice in Birthright, yet she’s still alive at the end of the game. Corrin says that, if Camilla’s life is theirs to take, then that means Camilla is now recruited. Takumi objects, but Corrin says they cannot kill their sister. Also, the real enemy is not Hoshido or Nohr, it is the secret enemy that commands the Nohrian army and just sent Nohrian assassins to kill them.

Flora sees Corrin’s sword glowing, which means Corrin is the hero of legend. Flora says that she’s going to go back to the Ice Tribe, who all went into hiding to avoid being killed by Nohr. This means one of two things: the Nohrians will find and kill the entire Ice Tribe, or Flora’s entire character is pointless and dumb. Like, if the Ice Tribe can easily avoid the Nohrian army, then there isn’t any point in them giving Nohr their chief’s daughters or fighting and dying for Nohr. There’s no point in Flora killing herself in Birthright. Then again, that was already pointless and dumb in Birthright.

The chapter ends with Camilla and Azura talking about how Nohrians hated Azura for being the daughter of Garon’s second wife, Arete, instead of his first wife, Katerina. It’s weird that they don’t hate Camilla for being the child of a concubine. Camilla says she always wanted to be friends with young Azura, but her mother forbade it.

So, now that we have Camilla and her sidekicks, I’d like to note another example of this game favoring Hoshido. We received thirteen different Hoshidans, every Hoshidan except for Ryoma, Hinoka, Azama, and Setsuna, before we got our first Nohrian. That’s weird.

Support: Azura/Corrin (Revelation)

C: Corrin finds Azura singing by a lake in the woods, which is her favorite pastime. They discuss how Hoshido and Nohr. Corrin says Hoshido is an amazing, fertile land where no one ever wants anything. Azura says this makes the people amiable and respectful. I get a feeling this game's writers like the Japanese country more, although it's a very subtle thing that's hard to pick up on. Azura says that the constant threat of Nohr hangs over Hoshido, and that Nohr is always an agressor who invades without reason. Corrin says that she should try to see things from the side of Nohr. Azura admits that Hoshidans seem self-centered to Nohrians, for some reason, which is why Nohr hates Hoshido. Which is bullshit. Nohr is invading Hoshido because Garon was turned into an evil slime monster who wants to cause the apocalypse.

B: Corrin explains that Nohr is a cold, gloomy tundra. Azura speculates that makes the people of Nohr mean. Corrin refutes this, pointing out that their army is filled with nice Nohrians. Azura speculates Nohrians feel jealous and that's why they're invading. And again, no, it isn't. And even if it is, how the hell does Azura plan to fix that?

A: Azura and Corrin talk in Valla about Anankos. Azura explains that legends say Anankos was a godlike entity that gave humans power in return for faithfulness. Humans eventually stopped worshipping him, so he went evil. Corrin calls it a sad story, and I disagree. It's a stupid story that makes Anankos look like a petty toddler. Azura says it teaches about the problems with grudges. Corrin says they should try to improve the world, not necessarily through fighting, and make enemies friends.

S: Corrin finds Azura bathing naked. Ah, my favorite Awakening trope returns, just as shitty as I remember. Corrin says that the mysteries of the world don't seem as important compared to Azura. They get together in what I assume is a non-incestuous marriage.

Review: This one is bad, but it's bad because this game is bad. The core conceit of Fire Emblem Fates does not work, as I have explained extensively.

Support: Felicia/Kaze

C: Felicia hangs out laundry to dry. The sheets fly away and Kaze catches them. Felicia says she's a bad maid and Kaze offers to help her get better.

B: Kaze stalks Felicia and keeps her from messing up. Felicia says she's in Kaze's debt, but he says that he's helping because he wants to.

A: Kaze reveals Corrin asked him to look after Felicia. Felicia calls herself a burden, but Kaze insists she's a valuable part of the army.

S: Kaze continues following Felicia, this time because he likes her.

Review: Fine, but not outstanding in any way.

Support: Camilla/Hinoka

C: Hinoka finds Camilla sewing. Camilla explains all young ladies in Nohr are taught to sew. Hinoka says she never learned because she began training at the age of seven. Camilla says that's horrible. Hinoka asks which part, her inability to sew or that she was a child soldier. She actually says child soldier, in what I believe is the only time this game utters those words. Camilla says it's bad for both reasons. Hinoka asks her to teach her to sew so she can make a gift for Corrin.

B: Hinoka sucks at sewing because she goes too fast and keeps stabbing herself. Camilla says that she wanted to become friends with Hinoka, because they're similarly devoted to Corrin.

A: Hinoka gets good at sewing. She says that Camilla is a good friend of hers. Camilla decides to teach her embroidery.

Review: Not awful, but a bit dull. Camilla's negative traits are toned down, but as a result, the conversation comes off as a bit dull.

Support: Beruka/Saizo

C: I rarely talk about translation differences on this blog, because I don't speak Japanese. I only know about translation differences if they're notable enough for me to have heard about them. The most famous bad translation in Fates, of course, is this Support. In the Japanese C-Support, Beruka and Saizo discuss how many people they've killed. Beruka used to count, but stopped after Camilla took her in. Saizo doesn't say a number, but he remembers the face of every person he's ever killed. That's a good conversation. In the English version, they stare at each other silently. I get this is a joke and a callback to Jaffar and Rath's Support in FE7, but the joke isn't very funny and we lose a good bit of character-building in the process. At least the other three conversations are direct translations.

B: Saizo asks if Beruka worked alone as an assassin. Beruka says she worked with people after meeting Camilla. Saizo talks about a mission where he was sent to kill a duke, but the family saw him and chased after him. Beruka knows the duke he's talking about.

B: Saizo explains that the duke hired Beruka to kill the man who sent Saizo, and that afterwards Saizo killed the the duke and his entire family. Beruka and Saizo are both disgusted by this.

A: Saizo says they need to fight to break the chain of vengeance to make a more peaceful world.

S: Saizo says that they will never be able to live normal lives, even if they bring peace. He asks her to settle down with him after the war ends.

Review: I have mixed feelings about this Support. It is, for the most part, excellent. If they hadn't royally botched the C-Rank, this would be within the top five Supports in this entire game. It's excellent. Even after such an abysmal translation, it's still great. But it could have been better.

Update 2.0.0 of Unofficial Gay Fates is here! After over three years of working on this project, we've finally hit 2.0.0, and wanted to make this update a little more special. This update adds in a new title screen for the mod, changing the 'Fates' on the title screen to a rainbow. This is edited for each route of the game! In addition, the cutscene that plays upon attaining your first S support now has two gender-neutral figures, instead of a man and woman's. Big thanks to Tru for making both of these edits!

In addition, we've also added another paralogue edit, this time for Shigure. As both Jakob and Felicia appear in the intro depending on your Avatar's gender, there are two different variants. One for if Jakob is married to Azura, and another if Felicia is.

After reading the bottom of the FE crossover post now I'm thinking about Desmond taking Azura's position of Nohr noble taken captive by hoshido and pushing Azura into more third party territory

Please can we get a fanfic of Desmond in FE: Fates. Please! I’m begging

I cannot write a full fic for this but I can make up ideas. I hope that will be okay :)

The FE: Fates idea that this is talking about is the bottom part of this FE x AC idea I had.

I know you said Nohr royalty but hear me out.

Okay, so in this scenario, we’re going full on isekai’ed Desmond but with an additional caveat. He deages to the same age Corrin is when she was kidnapped. And, in this case, we’ll go further and make him the twin brother of Corrin (up to you whatever gender Corrin is) who Garon was unable to kidnap together with Corrin.

In this one, we can set it up with the idea that Desmond doesn’t remember anything and people around him believe that he has amnesia because of the trauma of seeing their father die and his twin kidnapped while he ran away.

Desmond isn’t sure if this is necessarily true.

It was also possible that he had been reincarnated as this prince who is also called Desmond (although it would probably be more accurate that people around this part call him Desumon… but they sound the same more or less anyway).

Desmond knows he has a missing twin and he is worried, absolutely worried, sure, but, at the same time, he was in a young child’s body with no real information about the world.

So…

He had no choice but to focus on growing up and learning everything he has about this world.

When Desmond turned fourteen, he starts to have dreams of a woman with flowing blue hair and wearing a white dress.

She would always be singing by the lake.

The dream would always stop before she turned around.

Fifteen years since Desmond had woken up in this world…

The dream changed and he finally sees the woman turn around.

And the first thing she ever spoke to him was…

“Please… save everyone.”

Before Desmond could say anything, he wakes up…

To one of servants informing him that his vassal Kaze has returned…

… with his long lost twin.

Unorganized Notes:

Since every royalty needs to have 2 retainers, Kaze will become Desmond’s vassal. In this situation, Kaze will be one of his retainers (sorry, Corrin). His other retainer would be Shura who Desmond took in when he saw guards of Hoshida deny him entry.

Desmond also took in all the other refugees and survivors from Kohga. Mainly because he couldn’t turn a blind eye to them but also… because he knew that their skills as ninjas would help him make his own Brotherhood.

Of course, there’s a bit of a “???” on the timeline considering Kohga was invaded by Mokushu before the Nohr-Hoshido conflict so either we tweak the timeline or we change this with Desmond making contact with Shura and the other survivors a few years afterwards. Either way, his relationship with Shura is more of a partnership where Shura and the other Kohga survivors and refugees are under Desmond’s protection and Desmond promised that he’d help them take back their country.

So Desmond had actually been in the process of making plans to take care of the Mokushu (and Kotaro) while creating his own Brotherhood when Corrin ‘returns’ to Hoshido.

Desmond knows he’s not blood-related to them but he still calls them his siblings. He and Ryoma respect one another but Desmond’s usual “I’ll throw away my honor if it means I can save people” makes him butt heads with Ryoma at times, mostly because Ryoma is worried just how ‘far’ Desmond is willing to go. Saizo is always serious and polite around him and Desmond likes to joke around just to poke at him. Saizo is also very hard on Kaze and always remind him to make sure to protect Desmond. Kagero is usually more reserved but she’s also the one who keeps trying to remind Ryoma to ease up on Desmond because she knows that Ryoma is trying but Desmond tend to misunderstand his words at times.

Hinoka and Desmond are close and Desmond sometimes treats Hinoka the way Ezio treats Claudia. Lots of teasing and light-hearted conversation. Hinoka is the one who always tries to remind Desmond to not take Ryoma’s words too seriously. Azama gives Desmond a headache at times but they’re not in bad terms. Desmond also worries a lot about Setsuna because of how reckless she can be.

Takumi has double the inferiority complex this time around because of Desmond and Ryoma being leagues stronger than him. It’s also annoying for him because Desmond talk to him a lot because Desmond could see Takumi’s inferiority complex a mile away and tries to help. He’s not sure if he’s actually helping and he’s acting the way he wished someone had acted around him with his own inferiority complex (and Desmond has loads of it considering he feels inferior to three Master Assassins and one Grand Master, add in a sprinkling of thinking William Miles is always disappointed at him). Oboro and Hinata both see this and they always love it when Desmond visits Takumi. Oboro is also the one who made the Assassin robes under Desmond’s ‘designs’ which she updated to feel more Hoshido-esque with Desmond’s approval. Hinata likes to spar with Desmond and uses the time they spar to talk about Takumi and how much they’re worrying about him. Desmond suggested they try treating Takumi more as a friend than their ‘boss’ as Desmond think Takumi might be lonely. The two are trying… with varying success.

Sakura loves Desmond and likes to call him ‘big brother’. Sakura actually grew up with Desmond taking care of her a lot of times (because Desmond likes to play hooky). It’s because of Desmond’s influence that she hides a dagger in her clothes and she knows how to use it. Sakura would probably be the most ‘changed’ among the royalties. Her personality is pretty much the same but she’s less shy and there are times when she can perfectly mimic Desmond. It usually means someone really bad is about to die. Hana has a crush on Desmond. Desmond knows it but he sees Hana as a little sister and treats her like, patting her head and such. That only makes Hana’s crush harder and Desmond finally understood how Altaïr felt towards Kadar. Subaki is always polite around Desmond and Desmond tries to make him ease up a lot but it’s taking a lot of time which Desmond is fine with.

(I skipped the other Hoshido characters because Desmond would probably not have met them until the start of the ‘main story’).

Speaking of which…

Corrin chooses Nohr in this situation and the Yato actually splits into two with Corrin receiving one and the other going to Desmond.

Desmond is driven by revenge as well but he also knows that Corrin’s devastation over the death of their mother is real which is why he tries to get more information while staying in Hoshido’s side.

After he meets Corrin once more, he doesn’t dream of the woman with blue hair but…

He receives her pendant at the same time Yato splits into two.

Desmond cannot transform into a dragon and no one knows why.

This one would feel like it’s going for a Conquest and Birthright route at the same time then will pull into the Revelations route after Desmond and Corrin finally talk (both of them trying to minimize the death count).

Once they get to Valla, they’re greeted by a message made of water from the blue haired woman who calls herself Azura. She tells them the truth… She made a deal with a ‘god’ from another world to pull the soul of a newly departed ‘hero’ into their world and to turn back time. That soul was Desmond. She did all of this because the real Corrin chose a path paid with blood (although it’s not clear if she chose Nohr or Hoshido) but the real enemy managed to push the world into a ‘bad ending’ of some sort even after all those sacrifices. In exchange for her ‘spot’, Desmond became Corrin’s twin. The message ends with Azura requesting them to defeat the true enemy of this world and bring true peace.

Azura is alive but she’s somewhere in Valla, only able to leave message to guide Corrin and Desmond that she had prepared beforehand so the two also made it their mission to find Azura as well.

Age Swap AU Pairings

A list of who gets together and my opinions/reasons for these pairings.

This will be specifically for a Revelations Route, so if you wanna ship different combinations of characters in this AU, I won’t stop you.

I also won’t be getting into the Child Units (yet.) With all of that in mind, here’s the ASAU Pairings:

Corrin X Azura. I mean… it’s Corrin and Azura. How can I not? Especially since they’re not altered in this AU, but their kids are. Imagine big sibling Kana little brother Shigure dynamic.

Sakura X Hana. I’m as much of a sucker for Sakulise as the next FE14 fan, but honestly the bond these two have and have had for easily a decade at this point just overrides the softness of Adult Sakulise. Shiro is their son with Ryoma serving as a surrogate father.

Elise X Effie. Same as with Sakura and Hana, Elise and Effie’s bond in this universe (realm?) is just too strong for me not to pair them together. Siegbert is their son with Xander serving as a surrogate father.

Takumi X Oboro. This is a cute pairing, what can I say? Can you tell I’m a sucker for Liege X Lord pairings? Also, just imagine cute and sweet Kiragi making his mom’s Demon Face.

Leo X Niles. I don’t even know how to put my feelings on this pair into words, so I’ll just trust y’all to accept it. Forrest is their son with Beruka serving as a surrogate mother.

Hinoka X Hinata. This pairing is unique since it’s the only time I don’t ship a lord with their non swapped retainer (or another lord) but honestly I just like the himbo samurai/tomboy princess dynamic. Also protective older cousin Hisame is interesting.

Camilla X Beruka. Cute but strong Malig and her scary Assassin waifu? What’s not to love? Also Niles served as a surrogate father so they raise Nina together.

Ryoma X Xander. I decided to pair these two together since I figured I should do at least one pairing between a Hoshido and Nohrian royal. Since they couldn’t have kids with each other, they agreed to be surrogates so their oldest sisters could have kids, allowing Shiro and Siegbert to exist in this world.

Jakob X Charlotte. A very… very chaotic duo. This was simply a duo born from the fact that they were kinda just leftover after I paired off most of the other characters. Add super strength to Dwyer’s mountain of secret skills.

Silas X Felicia. One: they’re cute. Two: imagining Sophie inheriting Felicia’s clumsiness and ice magic is equally hilarious and terrifying.

Kaze X Orochi. Stoic ninja who struggles with feeling like he failed his liege due to something out of his control plus merry diviner who struggled with feeling like she failed her liege due to something out of her control equals both fun shenanigans and absolute angst. Also imagining Midori being able to somehow use a combination of Divining and her Medicine could make her a force of nature in her own way.

Saizo X Kagero. What can I say, I’m a sucker for this duo too. I’m sure they could be happy together once Saizo learns to stop having the personality of a cactus. Plus having two Ninja parents probably makes Asugi a super ninja.

Laslow X Selena X Odin. If I was gonna have Corrin get with Azura, an OT3 would be needed so all the kids would be capable of existing and I’m just a sucker for this trio. I’ll be using Henry!Laslow, Robin!Selena, and Lon’qu!Odin. Soleil inherits the Fell brand, Ophelia inherits the Exalts’s brand, and they get to be awesome redhead step sisters. Sorry to anyone who ships these two.

Azama X Subaki: …ok, look, so far I’ve done three wlw and only two mlm pairings. Two more guys were gonna have to get together. And after I saw these two, reread their supports, then read @unassumingvenusaur’s fanmade S Support for them, I wound up enjoying this pairing immensely. Also for the sake of not having to do anymore surrogates because this is getting complicated: Transmac Subaki (which I feel could not only make his backstory more interesting given the implications of how terrible his parents are) allowing for them to have a brown haired Caeldori and a red haired Mitama who are sisters.

Arthur X Setsuna. Apparently luck works like integers because when you combine an unlucky Fighter with an equally unlucky Archer, you get a doubly lucky Wyvern riding super hero. Also imagining dorks like Arthur and Setsuna together is just adorable tbh.

Kaden X Peri. When I don’t pair Peri (heh) with Laslow, I usually pair her with one of the furries so I can create an absolutely terrifying Kitsune/Wolfskin. In this case I decided that Peri would be Selkie’s mother and the rest of the army gets to suffer then consequences.

Hayato X Mozu. One: this is basically genderswapped Cyril/Lysithea and Donnel/Maribelle which already makes it a win. Two: Rhajat with Mozu’s hair and freckles is a hilariously adorable image.

Benny X Rinkah. Gentle giant meats muscular spitfire to create flaming good boy.

Keaton X Nyx. Yes, let’s pair the most mature woman in the army who considers herself a monster with one of the most immature guys in the army who can turn into a monster.

Feel free to share your opinions on the pairs, I’ll probably talk more about the child units in the future.

Life After the Curse

Summary: Azura’s curse didn’t kill her immediately, and instead made her suffer every single day of her life until her last breath. Emilie could never forgive herself for making her friend suffer so much. Could she ever begin so search happiness of her own after Azura had sacrificed herself for EMILIE’S cause?

The echoes of the piano keys under Emilie's fingers filled the empty wing with melody. Her body moved on its own, mimicking the melody she had constantly played for the past half year.

Revêrie.

The melancholy music clattered inside her skull, her hands doing their best to keep her mind off of what memories the melody brought

"Your skill with the piano is lovely as always, Emilie. I never tire of listening to it." A melodious yet sorrowful Azura always said whenever they had time to spare and the former nohrian princess decided to play a few pieces.

"You flatter me, Azura. But at least I'm not gonna embarrass you if I play while you sing, eh?" Emilie would reply with her characteristic smirk, not wanting to take the praise too close to her heart, but always feeling at peace whenever she managed to unburden her stoic friend.

Emilie's chin trembled, the melody changing to Clair the Lune, as though on purpose.

Just to make her heart bleed.

So she would never forget.

Even after Azura had lost her voice; even after she had no strength in her to sit on her bed... Even after she could barely dress herself without fearing the fabric of her clothes would tear her skin apart, Azura would always smile whenever Emilie played that piece.

She would close her eyes and look as though she were at peace, at least for a brief moment.

Breathing was hard for her.

Every time she did, it was as though countless needles pierced through her lungs, from inside out, making her ribcage throb and her skin to crawl.

Moving was next to impossible for her.

Even the slightest touch of another person would tear her skin and reveal the darkness of the curse lying beneath her. Inside of her.

Eating her alive.

After singing the last song that allowed Emilie to strike the decisive blow into Garon -- no, into whatever had been possessing Emilie's former Father -- Azura's curse took ahold of her body.

If only the symptoms had appeared little by little!

But no, of course whoever cast that curse wouldn't be merciful.

The moment the last note was out of her throat, Azura first lost strength in her legs: They were consumed by the curse so quickly she barely had time to cushion her own fall, her entire body following suit.

At the time, Emilie was already so out of it -- she had just dealt the finishing blow into the man she called Father for the largest part of her life, after walking over the corpses of her youngest sister and eldest brother.

"Not you... Azura, please, I can't bear to lose anyone else!" Emilie's voice said without her noticing. Her knees fell hard into the ground in front of her friend, time seemingly still for the both of them. "You promised! Y-you promised you wouldn't put yourself in danger..."

Emilie couldn't begin to imagine the physical pain Azura had gone through at that moment.

It felt as though her very bones turned to dust, her muscles tearing themselves apart trying to make the body stay intact. She felt fire burn under her skin, ice freeze beneath her nails; wind plucking her eyeballs while a beast tore her hair mercilessly, one strand at a time.

Azura's entire body was enveloped into the purple curse, her tears the only remnant of her true self as her own voice refused to leave her throat.

"What about Takumi?" Emilie had heard herself saying, "you guys finally managed to be... together."

The curse seemingly stopped advancing -- or rather, it looked as though it started reversing. First, Azura's golden eyes could be seen. Then it slowly melted away from her face and neck, then throughout her body.

As though the mention of her beloved husband made Azura strong enough to counter the curse.

"What foolish thinking. How could I even dare feel relieved because I managed to 'save' her by talking about the one person she was probably thinking about the most?" Emilie slammed the keys, changing the melody to Nocturne. 

The moment the putrid purple left her body -- it was then when everyone noticed that Azura was bleeding.

Not from a wound, no.

But from inside her womb.

"Not that I would know what she was thinking back then anyways. Not then, not now. Not ever."

After Azura woke up in a old room still in Krakenburg, she had lost her ability to speak.

Not a word left her throat.

The curse took what she treasured the most as well as what was the most crucial for the role Azura had imposed herself during her whole life.

In a sense, that had been the first day of her death.

Still, she smiled despite the excruciating pain that it was to simply exist. She smiled whenever Emilie visited her secluded quarters at a distant wing in Shirasagi Castle. She smiled whenever they held hands, despite the dragon princess knowing full well how much it hurt. She could see the purple curse faintly taking over whenever someone else's warmth touched Azura's constantly icy skin.

Even so, Azura would faintly caress her own growing stomach, wanting more than anything to protect the small pair of lives growing inside of her. The healers had managed to save the tiny flickering lights Azura protected with her whole being. It was as though she used her entire body as a wall for the curse, never allowing it to pass through to her and Takumi's babies.

Emilie was never allowed to see it -- only Takumi could -- but Azura's ever-growing bump was in a constant state of being covered by the purple curse. The day the hearts of the babies started to beat, so did the curse around the skin covering her abdomen. 

She was always in constant pain.

Yet... she smiled.

Emilie's tears blinded her vision, but she did not need it to keep on playing.

Azura's favorite melodies.

Azura's rare, genuine smiles.

There must've had another way! I was the ONE who told her to sing without restraint! Emilie's mind repeated over and over, making her back hunch back to the piano, hiding away her tears under her hair.

There was no one there to see them.

No one to hear the cries of her heart.

No one to listen to the sorrowful melodies. She would rather pluck one key after the other and throw them into the nether.

She would rather dismantle the entire wing and seal it forever. If only she could do so with herself, as well.

To live...

To live so filled with regrets; to rethink every single step, every single choice. To find herself unworthy to keep on hanging in there after losing so much.

After saying goodbye to so many important people.

Azura had barely managed to live enough to name her children. It was a miracle she was still breathing by the time the both of them were born.

Shigure. She had managed to write his name moons after the curse took ahold of her voice.

Kiragi. Takumi whispered the name to his wife's ear as she closed her eyes to her final sleep.

Azura had barely lived her life!

She had ONLY just found love!

And yet... Emilie dared to move on with her life.

"It's not your fault, and I'm saying this from my heart. Azura never blamed you. I won't, either. Though I don't think you'll believe me, given our record..." Takumi unpromptedly said to Emilie one evening, after the both of them hadn't spoken for weeks.

Even her experience at masking her emotions wouldn't work if she tried to act normally in front of her younger brother.

She had no comforting words to say. No witty comments.

Only self-pity.

She could've done more! She could've...

Hearing the distant cries of her nephews should make her smile.

They resembled her friend so much: they both had her hair and eyes -- and, most importantly, there was no sign of the curse in their bodies.

Of course, Azura had told Emilie that the curse was linked to the pendant (which disappeared during the first time the purple darkness covered Azura's body, back at that fateful day), but one could never be so sure.

The children were alive.

They were well, and they would help Takumi heal.

Emilie only realized she had stopped playing when her ears started ringing due to the sudden silence.

Would someone help her heal, as well?

She chuckled in spite of herself, her lips trembling. She knew very well who else would be there, at that abandoned wing -- one so filled with memories of Azura's dying days that no one dared to step foot at anymore -- watching her. Making sure she would be able to get everything our of her chest.

"I couldn't save her." Emilie murmured. "I didn't even TRY to understand that curse. If only I had more time-- if only I--"

"Stop." Saizo's brusque voice made Emilie cut her own off. "It's no use to think about 'what could have been's. It's done." Stepping out of the darkness, he felt the scar over his eye throb.

He knew exactly how it felt to lose someone important and feel such deep regret he'd wish time to go back. Emilie was actually much better than him -- she didn't recklessly throw herself into danger for the sake of her own satisfaction.

She didn't try to kill herself to right a wrong as he had done.

Emilie knew the meaning behind his words, as well as their depth. But they still hurt.

He was twisting the knife she had stabbed her own heart with.

The piano keys were drenched with her tears -- she hadn't realized she was sobbing up until she felt Saizo's hand on her shoulder.

"That- that doesn't help! What else can I do? Accept her death?! While knowing full well that I could've done more? That I could've-"

"Stop." He said it again, but his voice was much closer this time. She could feel the slight grip he had on her shoulder.

Caring for her. Not wanting her to fall into the loophole of despair.

Emilie looked up at him, her jaw trembling. "What else-" her voice was distorted, the tone almost making her ears ring once more. "What else can I do? Move on? H-how could I, when she'll never..."

Saizo's brow was furrowed so deeply he had to grit his teeth so his own heart wouldn't bleed. He had lost many comrades.

He had lost his father in battle.

He had failed to avenge him.

But, to him, to the way that he had been living his life, that was something that would happen one day or another. Saizo had never been good at feeling, well, feelings.

But it tore him apart from inside to see his... adored Emilie suffer so much like that. The circle of life had claimed a life, one that seemingly had been promised to it earlier than intended due to the curse.

It was natural.

It was supposed to be natural.

But his body suffered from a physical ache by seeing Emilie grieve so desperately like that. Sometimes she would come to the abandoned wing only to play on that old piano, as though to etch upon her mind that she shouldn't be allowed to be happy.

Not when her friend suffered so much, for so long.

It wasn't supposed to be like that.

Emilie had the right to be happy; to laugh again.

His expression hidden behind the mask, Saizo pressed his lips into a thin line before quickly lowering himself to pick Emilie up in his arms.

Surprised, but mentally exhausted, Emilie simply muffled an 'eek' before wrapping both arms around Saizo's neck.

"Come with me," he said needlessly, as though he weren't carrying her himself.

Her tears halted due to that sudden move, Emilie simply dug her face into his collarbone and nodded, once again feeling the urge to cry.

Saizo stepped out of the room through the garden door, not carrying to walk over the grass without his shoes. The damp blades itched on his toes, the sign of a passing shower.

The garden was overgrown. Ever since Azura's death and the Royal Family's collective abandon of the wing, no one had touched it. The weeds grew recklessly, as did the wild flowers.

A single midnight lily sprouted as Saizo approached a faraway bush.

Emilie widened her eyes. "That's-"

"She planted it after we returned. The garden was still being cared for then, but it never sprouted no matter how much the gardeners tried." Saizo's voice rumbled through his chest, making Emilie feel warm inside. "No wonder. A hoshidan wouldn't be able to make a nohrian flower sprout."

"Then- how-" she looked from the glowing flower to him, the tears cold in her cheeks by then.

"I don’t know.." He shrugged, making the tension she had developed come to a screeching halt. "I'm not the one who likes to garden here. Look for yourself." He kneeled, placing Emilie on the ground right in front of the flower.

She reached out to it, but hesitated to touch the fragile bloom.

It was as though Azura herself had come to tell her that it was alright. That everything would be alright.

The flower glowed in a mysterious blue, a striking resemblance to her friend's characteristic hair.

If a nohrian flower could grow in hoshidan soil... Then perhaps Emilie could...

Perhaps she, too, could thrive in that not-so-foreign land.

Maybe she, too, could hold onto whatever ground she could so as to grow and blossom.

She didn't notice how she squeezed Saizo's hand the whole time. "Will you help me, Saizo?"

"In anything you wish me to," he replied without hesitation, lowering his head to stay right beside hers, looking at the flower.

"I... want to make this into my garden. I'll need all the help I can get. For an... unlimited amount of time."

Saizo smirked, lowering his mask. "I said 'anything' did I not?" He turned to her, meeting her clear gaze for the first time in what seemed to be a lifetime.

Emilie caressed Saizo's cheek, ever so softly it made him close his good eye to enjoy it. She used that opportunity to place a kiss over his lips.

He could've prevented it if he wanted.

His reflexes are better than hers by a hundredfold.

He felt her warm breath coming closer, but instead of stopping it, he welcomed it.

Saizo placed one hand behind her back, pulling her closer. He wouldn't allow her to pull away after a simple peck, oh no. He opened his mouth, inserting his tongue into hers, taking her by surprise.

She widened her eyes as her cheeks flushed with embarrassment, but she didn't stop. She straightened her back and moved her hands from his face to his neck, hugging him tightly as he stole her breath away.

She was still on the road to forgive herself, but with the flower her friend left behind as well as the garden she promised herself to care for... She would be able to start a new life.

Hopefully with Saizo by her side.

Entry 12: All Hail Takumi

Castle building time! I built a giant dragon statue that heals units during invasions, which is nice I guess, and also an arena so I can make my soldiers fight to the death and bet on whether they perish! Unfortunately, when I went to use the arena, the dumb clerk said I couldn’t use it yet. Meanie.

Support: Hinata/Oboro

C: Hinata’s hair is too long, so Oboro cuts it for him. He requests she make him look like Takumi, because apparently one dude with a pineapple haircut is too few. The duo reflect on their mutual admiration of Takumi, their desire for his coolness to rub off on them, and their rivalry over who is more loyal.

B: Hinata offers to cut Oboro’s hair and she rejects him, saying that he will mess it up because he’s Hinata. The two of them continue talking about how cool Takumi is and how much they want to be like him.

A: Hinata and Oboro discuss the fact that they only bicker because they respect each other. Also, Takumi is cool. All hail Takumi.

S: The two of them get engaged, talking about Takumi throughout their proposals.

Review: Holy crap you two, shut up about Takumi. He isn’t even cool. They have good chemistry, but all they talk about is how much they love Takumi.

Support: Azama/Hinoka

C: Azama makes fun of Hinoka’s hair, clothes, and clumsiness, despite the fact that she’s a goddamn member of the royal family and probably could have him executed on the spot. She threatens to stab him and he brings up the fact that he’s only her retainer because he saved her life once.

B: Hinoka is sad over the deaths of innocent soldiers and Azama gives no sympathy because people die every day. She questions why he saved her when she was a child and he says he did it because she looked furious and he thought saving her would be interesting. She points out that he’s a horrible person, but says she respects his confidence.

A: Hinoka begs Azama to save a dying man and Azama says it isn’t worth the effort. When pressed, he says the man will die anyway. Hinoka orders him to do his damn job and he begrudgingly tries to save the dying man. He dies anyway, and Azama tells Hinoka that she should have just let him die peacefully, telling her that her kindness will be her downfall.

S: Azama goes up to Hinoka and tells her that they’re engaged. Hinoka kinda just goes along with it after Azama lists his good qualities.

Review: I actually kinda liked this one, oddly enough. Azama’s dickishness went so far that it looped around and made him likeable. This conversation touches on the horrors of war in a way that most conversations don’t and I do enjoy Azama teaching Hinoka that there are limits to her kindness. I just wish that Azama’s lackadaisy attitude was a facade, a la Hawkeye Pierce. The two of them, like most couples in this game, have little chemistry. Still, Azama going up to a member of the royal family and declaring the two of them engaged is so audacious I respect it.

Support: Corrin/Mozu

C: Mozu is lugging around some heavy boxes full of vegetables, because she is a strong little girl. This leads to a conversation about Mozu’s village; Corrin asks if Mozu misses her old life, Mozu says not to worry, Corrin says she’ll probably never stop worrying about Mozu.

B: Mozu talks about hunting as a child. Apparently she fought bears, because Mozu is a god of death.

A: Corrin decides to give Mozu a basic education, which Corrin is in no way qualified to do, considering that she has consistently shown herself to be the dumbest person in our army. Corrin says some stuff about the army being Mozu’s new family and Mozu cries. It’s sweet.

S: Corrin says he used to pity Mozu, but now has nothing but respect for her for her courage. The two of them get married.

Review: Corrin’s interactions with Mozu are very sweet. The S-Rank, again, doesn’t really work, but then again few S-Rank’s do. Overall, a very charming support line, if a bit bland. Also Mozu killed a bear with her bare hands because she is a terrifying death god disguised as a little girl.

Support: Hinoka/Setsuna

C: Setsuna makes Setsuna a cup of tea so bad it’s almost poisonous. The two of them discuss the fact that they both suck at cooking and decide to team up to become better chefs.

B: Hinoka and Setsuna try to make eggs. It does not go well.

A: The girls finally make a good meal by working together and decide they can do anything if they put their minds to it. Setsuna gets stuck in the pantry.

Review: This was a fluff support line, which is okay, I guess. I would have liked it to have a bit more meat, perhaps an explanation of why she made the walking disaster that is Setsuna her retainer, but I will admit that it was a fun read.

Birthright Chapter 10: Ninja Village

The party travels through Mokushu, the ninja country from Kaze and Saizo’s support conversation. Kaze says that he isn’t worried about the people of Mokushu being conquered by Nohr because of their sick martial arts prowess. Zola sneaks up on the party because...wait, hold on, they didn’t tie him up? We weren’t shown him escaping, so I guess that means they just let him go after he tried to kill him. My god, Corrin gets dumber with each passing moment.

Zola surrenders and begs for amnesty. Corrin asks why they should trust him and he says that they really shouldn’t, cause of the whole attempted murder thing. But, he doesn’t have an army anymore, which means he isn’t a threat. He says that he can be of assistance and Corrin decides to bring him along, ignoring objections from the smart people in the party. To be fair, she does say Hinoka will kill him if he acts suspicious, but seriously just leave him in Mokushu he’s obviously going to betray you. Want to know how I know? Because he didn’t join our army.

Suddenly, someone throws a shuriken at Sakura. Kaze identifies it as belonging to a Mokushu ninja. Zola speculates that Mokushu might have an alliance with Nohr. The daimyo of Mokushu, Kotaro, shows up and says that Mokushu has an alliance with Nohr. Then the battle starts.

The map is filled with spike traps that activate as we step on them. We can use the Dragon Veins to spring them on the enemies instead. At the start of turn two, Takumi just kinda wanders into the battle and starts shooting Hinoka, which is weird because she isn’t one of the sisters he hates. Also he keeps muttering kill and is labeled an enemy, which is probably bad. He also whines about his inferiority complex, which is why he’s way lamer than Ryoma.

Azura sings to him and breaks his mind control. What can’t singing do?

During this map, I was reminded that Takumi is an unstoppable death god who can kill everything with ease. I paired him up with Corrin and waltzed through the woods, one-shotting ninjas left and right. I did hold them back and let Saizo kill the boss, though. Because, you know, he killed Saizo’s dad, something only told in an optional support conversation. Saizo actually has unique dialogue with him where he does the whole Inigo Montoya thing. Although, it was technically Hinoka who did the finishing blow, because Saizo doesn’t hit hard enough to kill.

Overall, this map was fine, I guess. The spikes were more a nuisance than a serious game changer. I did get good healer HP, though. Speaking of healers, there’s one stationed in the top right of the map who watched as I killed every other member of the army and slowly approached her before putting an arrow between her eyes. We’re the good guys!

After the battle, Hinoka and Sakura cry over how happy they are that Takumi isn’t evil anymore. He explains that he and Ryoma were separated after being attacked and that he ended up falling into the bottomless canyon. Then he woke up mind controlled and attacking us. I’m sure that’s not something we need to worry about.

At the end of the chapter, Takumi is finally nice to Azura because she saved him. Also Azura starts coughing, which means she is definitely going to die at the end of the game.

Kaze returns with Kagero, Ryoma’s ninja retainer who was imprisoned in Kotaro’s cellar. She tells us that Ryoma went to Cheve to fight Nohr. And didn’t look for his brother ever, I guess.

Overall, this chapter was okay. The stuff with Zola was dumb and could have been handled last chapter, and the fact that is completely sidelines Saizo is kinda frustrating, but Takumi got some cool character development and there was some foreshadowing about the bottomless canyon.

My Fire Emblem Fates Ships!

Hey, since I’m back, I thought I’d share my Fates otps! A good friend of mine told me to pair up whoever I want and forget stats and that’s what I wanted to do. I’m only halfway through Birthright but I already planned ahead on who I want to pair up for my playthrough in Revelation! I love to obsess over them so I’m posting them here!
