Layton NPC appreciation week - Azran Legacy.

I heard we were appreciating Layton NPCs. For Azran Legacy, well, I just had to draw Swift. For one of the coolest NPC designs, he's barely given the spotlight. I feel he should have had a bigger role in connection to Bronev and Targent as a whole. This outfit is an AU one but I think he'd get some slack when it comes to his clothes (like Emmy & Bloom).

Drives me insane how obsessed Bronev was with recruiting his sons into Targent… when Emmy was right there. The girl he ‘saved’ and raised since childhood, who was such a skilled fighter and liar, who was so indebted to him that she would do absolutely anything for him— even walk into an Azran death trap and betray her closest friends. He raised her to be his personal pawn but still, she was so insistent that he was a good person deep down… Emmy did everything he asked of her, even stood by while he stabbed Aurora and unleashed the Azran Legacy.

All of that, and yet, Bronev still cares more about the lost loyalty of his sons.

Okay, so maybe Bronev wasn’t aware that the revered archaeologist ‘Professor Sycamore’ was his eldest son, Hershel Bronev. Maybe he never even saw a photo of Desmond. Maybe he just heard Desmond Sycamore refused to join Targent too many times and ordered his agents to take out Desmond’s family. Maybe Bro even felt a little guilty when he found out afterwards that— whoops— he just approved the execution of his granddaughter and Desmond’s spouse.

Bronev does NOT have that excuse when he threatens Hershel Layton’s parents in the Nest. He knows Hershel Layton is his son… Anyone with half a brain can see how much Hershel resembles Rachel. Bronev’s naive enough to fall for the Azran Legacy but he must know—

After the fall of Azran sanctuary, Bronev informs Hershel that Theodore Bronev is his real name. Hershel dismisses this, but says he hopes they will reunite one day as fellow archaeologist and as friends. 

Bronev does not say a single word of farewell to Emmy. Maybe he’s trying to keep her identity a secret and save her from being arrested too—

No. Emmy’s cover’s already been blown. She’s leaving Layton and London, regardless.

No, Bronev doesn’t even give Emmy one last look. Just like he didn’t look at her when he finally decided to enter the light beams. Because Hershel Layton is there and Bronev’s biological son is far more important to Bronev than the random girl he took in.

It doesn’t matter how much Desmond and Hershel refuse or defy Bronev or outright sabotage his plans. He wants their loyalty, even when he can’t have it. Maybe that’s part of the reason why he’s so obsessed with controlling them.

If he had just forgotten his sons and focussed solely on Emmy… maybe letting her become an archaeologist in her own right, then Bronev wouldn’t have needed Hershel and Desmond. He could’ve understood the Azran Legacy better if he just worked with Emmy… But no.

That’s not to say Bronev never cared about Emmy at all, but he cared more about his sons, even when one despised him and the other had completely forgotten him for thirty years. I want to think this was intentional writing on Level 5’s part but then I see the end credits picture of the Bronev family (Bronev, Rachel, Hershel and Theodore)… and I see the picture of Bronev speaking to a crowd that parallels Hershel lecturing to a crowd.

Meanwhile there’s never a single picture of a younger Emmy with Bronev.

Aside from my art, I'm still not all too optimistic about Flora reappearing in NWOS :/ but I really hope she does!

Aurora is actually my oldest costume, I made her way back in 2020 (I only started cosplaying in 2018 and a lot of my oldest stuff got destroyed when there was a leak in our storage unit). I feel like there's a lot more I can do with her so I’ll defo come back to her. Shoutout to @heartofhyrule for being my gruff father figure and helping me around London CAUSE I CANT SEE SHIT OUT OF THOSE LENSES
