#aziraphale loves humanity

thinking about how aziraphale is, in fact, the MOST angel of all the angels. god instructed the angels to love humanity more than they love Her. the angels who refused this order fell, and those who obeyed did so out of their love and devotion to Her. but aziraphale is different.
he doesn’t love humanity more than he loves god because She told him to, he loves humanity more than he loves god because he knows them. he’s lived among them and he knows them better than any other angel ever has or ever will. he sees them for what they are—fallible, cruel, twisted, sometimes hateful—but also kind and loving and innovative and capable of change and choice and free will.
and aziraphale loves them for it—he loves us for it because how absolutely lovely is it that we are beings capable of all of these wonderful things which make us complex and simple all at once?
and aziraphale loves that he is here to witness and experience it with us, with the best of and the worst of and the in betweenness of humanity. and he loves that humanity has given him the gift of choice, the gift of kindness and empathy and anger and love. he loves food and drink and books and clothes and words and music and dancing and crowley and he loves and he loves and he loves.
he loves humanity so much that he defies god’s and heaven’s other orders, and that’s okay because at the end of it he’s doing what She asked of him. he is loving humanity more than he loves Her. it’s why he didn’t fall when he helps crowley stop armageddon.
he gives adam and eve his flaming sword out of that love and that kindness and in doing so he invents the shades of grey of which he and crowley will eventually come to associate themselves with, when the time is right.
he helps crowley save job’s children, even though he has been ordered to do otherwise, because he understands that love infinitely more than gabriel or michael or any other angel can.
he stops armageddon because he loves humanity.
he befriends a demon who also loves humanity.
then he falls in love with that demon who loves humanity.
the other angels love humanity more than god because She told them they must, but they do not truly love humanity. not like aziraphale, who loves humanity the way god intended for humanity to be loved.
aziraphale loves humanity the way She loves humanity, not because he was told to, but because he sees them the way She sees them.
love is the oldest story in the universe, and aziraphale knows it. when you think about it, he is the one writing it.

Can we go back to this for a sec? To Aziraphale having to explain the concept of being in love to the other angels? Because I cannot imagine what a trip it has to be, falling in love with someone when that is literally not something you are supposed to be able to do. When it is something you barely understand. When the object of whatever this is isn't supposed to be able to feel this way either, except as time goes on you start to realize it's happening to him too. And neither of you can actually talk to each other about it.

Broke: Good Omens isn't a gay love story because Crowley and Aziraphale aren't in love
Woke: Good Omens is a gay love story because Crowley and Aziraphale are in love
Bespoke: Whether Good Omens is a gay love story or not is debatable; it is, however, undeniably a story of the love between Crowley and Aziraphale (whatever type of love that may be)
Neil Gaiman: Good Omens isn't a gay love story because while Crowley and Aziraphale are in love, they are not human males, they are an angel and a demon

Where a Canvas Blooms by foolishlovers
It’s an Arrangement. Aziraphale knows this. He knows a lot of things, and others he doesn’t, but the most important things, he knows. He knows that the cheeky redhead in his arms smiles and purrs when he runs his fingers through his hair, knows that Crowley’s hands are rough from working outside, knows the softness of his heart. Aziraphale doesn’t know he’s in love with Crowley until he does. But it’s just an Arrangement. Is it? Part 1 of The Cuddle Arrangement

ok so the thing is, the kiss really was the best way crowley knew to convey his feelings to aziraphale because nina and maggie were right, they do talk but they never say what they mean.
but that doesn’t mean they don’t understand each other, at least to a certain extent.
and crowley knows aziraphale
he knows that he loves books and plays and the stories made by humanity. he watches his angel learn magic the human way and finds out he learned french the human way and knows better than anyone how much he loves human food. he throws a ball to get nina and maggie together because that’s what the humans in jane austen novels would do.
crowley knows that aziraphale romanticizes humanity, loves the drama and the stories and every little thing that makes humans human.
and what could be more human than a desperate kiss asking someone to stay

i love a lot of good omens headcanons but i think my favourite definitely has to be that 'angel' only became a common petname because so many people heard crowley call aziraphale angel and it just caught on amongst humans

Posting my favorite snippets of art from Crowley’s Coven.
It’s easy as an artist to go back and knit pick all the “mistakes” we make and feel that wonderful imposter syndrome slide on in. So easy, in fact, that’s all some of us do.
Thus it is very important to celebrate what you’re happy about too, while also acknowledging what you could’ve done better next time.
I’m very pleased with how the characters are entwined, giving them visual heft. I want Crowley to look like he’s being HELD. I want Aziraphale to feel put upon by these witches and then him obsessively touching his Crowley when the hot chocolate hits!
And the witches are so insane and gorgeous with their grabby hands and instant nudity whenever the whims…whims them?
Anyway!
Celebrate your art! Celebrate everything you create and be proud. It’s one of the most human things we can do.
Cheers!

there's something a bit sad but also very meaningful about the way Crowley dances around using the word 'couple' during his confession. it's a bit sad because it seems like he's afraid to use that word (perhaps because of the fear of going too fast for Aziraphale, and the strong connotations of that word), but mainly i find it very lovely and meaningful because, instead of using that word, he comes up with terms and expressions of his own to describe what they are (“we're a team, a group. group of the two of us”, “just the two of us”, “just be an us”, “you and me”, “we could have been us”) and to me, those expressions have a stronger and more beautiful meaning than the word 'couple', because just in the same way that they discovered their own humanity, they've also discovered their own form of love, one that goes beyond human standards, and one that is unique to them.

Not to be too involved in fandom discourse but I think that the good omens fandoms (and most fandoms out there) has an issue with going back at the source material. I don't mean this in an patronizing way because I do it too, and it happens, you get so involved with a character and with a story that some things become blurred and more reflective of yourself (the watcher/reader) then of the story itself.
But sometimes, specially if you happen to find yourself hating a character that it's literally part of the main couple of the story you love, I think it's good to go back to that story you love and revisit the things you like about it and remind yourself what they really are like in canon.
The thing about Good Omens is that it is of course a very touching love story with very important themes, but it's also a clever comedy about two immortal beings and the insane divine/human world. Aziraphale and Crowley aren't two beings who are torturing themselves because of their love for centuries, they love and have fun with each other and the silly good/evil things the world has to offer.

a lasting impression by foolishlovers (T, 4k, complete)
for @sabotage-on-mercury
Crowley's dull shift at the pasta bar takes an unexpected twist when the charming bookseller from the shop around the corner drops by. To his dismay, Aziraphale doesn't seem to recognise him, despite Crowley's frequent visits during his breaks earlier this year. It's been a couple of months since then, but has he really left no impression at all?

i feel like i won’t be able to put this correctly but i love the difference between how azi and crowley express their love and how beelzebub and gabriel express it. like beez and gabriel love each other but they never kiss because they’re not humans, they’re ethereal/occult beings who don’t express love in human terms. and their love isn’t explicitly romantic or queerplatonic or platonic but it doesn’t matter the label except that they’re in love.
but with crowley and azi, they’ve lived among humans for 6000 years, and they like earth and humanity, they enjoy eating human food and drinking and they enjoy human music and dancing and books, and i think overtime they’ve become connected with the human experience. so, when crowley comes to terms that he loves azi and needs to express it, his first instinct is to express how humans do—by kissing him.
it doesn’t mean they’re suddenly explicitly romantic, just that they’re expressly in love, and crowley in his desperation needs to show aziraphale those feelings before it’s too late. but unfortunately, he’s always too late.

Getting interrupted when reading the first frisky scene 100k words into a 400k words slow-burn is the worst kind of c*ckblocking there is, change my mind.

thinking about crowley and "my lover's got humor, she's the giggle at a funeral" and "knows everybody's disapproval, i should have worshipped her sooner" and "if the heavens ever did speak then she's the last true mouth piece" and "the only heaven i'll be sent to is when i'm alone with you" and "my lover's the sunlight" and "i was born sick but i love it" and "there is no sweeter innocence then our gentle sin"
