More thoughts on 1.10b: Aziraphale and Yellow 

There’s already been a lot of fantastic discussion about this, especially regarding Aziraphale (temporarily) turning the Bentley.  However, watching Season 2 for the first (two) times, I had some thoughts on Aziraphale and yellow, unrelated to a certain demon’s eyes… 

(1) I was really hoping that yellow might be a color that Aziraphale had liked for a long, long time and one that we might get to see him wear and use more frequently now that he is a retired angel.  I know Aziraphale tends to stick to shades of blue, white, and brown, but I also feel like that could partly stem from the colors typically favored by Heaven.  Yes, Aziraphale (and Muriel) tend to wear warmer, “earthier” shades of beige and even share blue in common.  And yes, Aziraphale’s blues serve as a lovely counterweight to Crowley’s reds.  But imagine if we had gotten to see him branch out a bit more, color-wise, now that he’s free to be completely himself on his side with Crowley / Earth. Given how much he enjoys performing as a magician, I think he could enjoy wearing other bright colors!

(1b) I also think that yellow is a great color for Aziraphale to like and be associated with.  It’s sunshiny and cheerful and “pretty.”  It would also be marvelous if Aziraphale had begun wearing it more not only as a way to deviate further from Heaven’s colors but also to potentially reclaim Gabriel’s Season 1 epithet of him as “sunshine.”  (It could be a more subtle version of his “the Southern pansy” moment.  And I know that’s completely unrelated to the flower, but pansies are usually part yellow!) 

(2) I’m not going to get into the whole blue and red, water and fire ideas with Aziraphale and Crowley because it doesn’t really fit within the scope of my initial Season 2 thoughts.  But, I will say that I was similarly hoping that we might get to see Crowley branch out in his color scheme.  Like, obviously red and black emphasize his “Serpent of Eden” status if not his identity as a (former) agent of Hell.  But what if we had gotten a Season 2 where Aziraphale had started wearing or at least decorating with more yellow and was all sunshiny, and Crowley had started wearing or at least not completely scorning green!  Like plant-y shades of green!  And allegiance to Earth types of green!  And new beginnings green!!!

Crowley and Aziraphale don't need a quiet retirement in the countryside.

What they really need is for their South Downs cottage to be part of an HOA and spend the rest of their existences facing a common enemy of powertripping geriatric citizens and nosy neighbours.

I want 10 seasons of Crowley's plans for a carnivorous garden being turned down and him going scorched earth on the head of the HOA comittees' award winning Dhalia patch. I want 10 seasons of Aziraphale sniffing out HOA policy loopholes like a truffle pig or maliciously complying when he can't get out of something.

Crowley Meets "Jim"

Thoughts on 1.10: Crowley meets “Jim” in the bookshop

The line “Do we know a Jim?” is such a couple (or, at least, a group) type of thing.  Like, naturally, now they can admit to traveling in the same social circles! 

Also, I feel like Crowley is either doing a better job at remembering human names in Season 2 or is no longer pretending not to remember people’s names! This is shown more later, especially leading up to and during the ball, but I still find it interesting! Like, even given all of the meta about Crowley living in the Bentley and choosing not to settle, it does seem to indicate some willingness to develop connections with specific people and places (and also not have to hide so hard how much he likes (some) humans!) 

Crowley yelling at Gabriel honestly reminded me of what some people do when trying to communicate with other people who either can't understand or speak English or use other methods of communication.  Which I realize is not the scene or context at all, but I also wonder what it might show about Crowley and his views of angels (or at least angels who attempt to execute his only friend!)  Did Crowley actually think that approach would prompt better answers from Gabriel?  Or was he just eager for the chance to yell at Gabriel and take on the role of the person asking the questions this time? (I.e., the power position / authority.) I suppose Crowley is likely also feeling protective of Aziraphale their the bookshop, but his later comments about a house that's missing all of the furniture seem to suggest that he knew getting answers from Gabriel wouldn't be that simple.  

On the duster: (1) I think it’s such a bright yellow because Aziraphale doesn’t usually dust (don’t want customers to feel too comfortable), and he likely miracled it up to keep Gabriel busy!  But, I also feel like there are signs throughout the season that Aziraphale is, consciously or subconsciously, letting go of the bookshop and preparing to leave it (at least in some fashion.)  I had hoped that it was because he would be moving to the South Downs, but there are so many things that he seems to allow without fuss that he likely wouldn’t condone? Such as Gabriel / Jim not only dusting but also moving books around and attempting to organize them.  (We also see Crowley moving books multiple times?) I also initially thought that the fact that a fly had got in might mean that Aziraphale had allowed Gabriel to clear out some of the bookshop’s spiders.

(2) Yellow is 10,000% one of Aziraphale’s favorite colors, pass it on!  

Lastly, I love that we got to see more of the bookshop, both how the rooms in the back seem to connect to the main shop portion and the rooms up on the first floor!  And Crowley leading Aziraphale through the bookshop (looking just as at home as the angel!) made me so happy!  He knows that he doesn’t need permission to enter the more private areas; he’s always welcome!  (And he likes waiting inside.)
