Murakami, Shadowrun, Ponytail Warriors and Trolls...

“Playful Ayumi and serious Aomane are described (In 1Q84, the Murakami novel) as the best imaginable duo for conducting wild sex orgies with strangers...”  

I once met Brian Aldiss at a ‘Day of the Triffids’ lecture, and he seemed as much of a charmingly dirty old man as he does from his books. Ricky Gervais memorably spoofed Patrick Stewart in Extras, and might as well have targeted John Cleese in Fierce Creatures, to the effect that famous auteurs can put whatever they like in their films, even if what they like is half-naked girls. I sometimes get an inkling that award-winning author Haruki Murakami puts more sex in some of his novels than strictly necessary to develop his unquestionably worthy and intellectual themes. Norwegian Wood was a romance, of course (Including the most terrifying lesbian rape scene I’ve ever encountered, as well as a host of excellent scenes), but do more fantastical Murakami novels have to include multi-person sex? As Goblin Slayer so miserably showed, our fantasies are what we want, in a sense, even as far as the negation and degradation of others...

SPOILERS for 1Q84, a novel by Haruki Murakami and DISTURBING CONTENT...

  ...which I personally rate a way below Wind Up Bird Chronicle, and which I dropped after Ayumi’s death. WPC Ayumi is a wonderfully sweet-spirited good-time girl and a hard-working traffic cop in 80′s Tokyo. With exceptional firearms and unarmed combat skills, a ‘fifties’ ponytail, a gucci handbag (with cheap shoes, a la Clarice Starling?) and a full figure. As Murakami couldn’t help but state frankly, big breasts.

Ayumi’s problem is that she’s too busy with work to meet any guys except policemen, who she dismisses as fascists and sexist pigs, unappreciative of her highly ranked skills. She deals with this by picking up men in bars, two or three at a time, in the company of her gal pal Aomane (the novel’s protagonist), who likewise can’t conventionally meet guys in her job as a professional assassin...

(It is rather chauvinistic of Murakami that the men Ayumi and Aomane pick up are typically decent lovers, although the girls do ‘read’ the men they pick. I can’t imagine that men who care much about female pleasure are those who hang out in hotel bars) 

Playful Ayumi and serious Aomane are described as the best imaginable duo for conducting wild sex orgies with strangers. Which are frankly described, not exactly pornography, but clearly written from a man’s perspective of good sex. More practically and importantly, Ayumi and Aomane look out for each other’s safety as friends. In one private moment, Ayumi starts kissing Aomane; but Aomane turns her down because the friendless, cold-blooded hitwoman values their bond as friends too much.

Eventually, the assassin breaks off her dangerous friendship with the policewoman who never discovered her real job. Ayumi is next heard of having been strangled to death, by somebody she’d allowed to handcuff her to a hotel bed.

Poor Ayumi. Seemingly written to demonstrate the seemingly trite point that individuals must conform themselves even to a sexist and violent society, or be destroyed. On the level that the nail sticking out is hammered down, and girls in short skirts have themselves to blame, this is very wrong. On another level, humans have to restrain and conform their personal desires to exist in an non-ideal universe, if they are ever to find peace. The ideal is to adapt to the true nature of the universe rather than the prejudiced conventions of society. Still, letting a stranger handcuff you to a bed is extremely unwise.

In a significant conversation, Ayumi complains that the world is obviously stupid and unfair, which Aomane agrees with, but says that it's too late to change this world for another one. Which contrasts Ayumi’s doomed, Nietzschean-Last-Woman quest for sexual satisfaction (For the perfect bond she could perhaps only have with Aomane, and never will?), with Aomane’s conformity to her own rather fantastical lifestyle as an assassin used by an eccentric female millionaire to strike down abusive men. In a sense, Aomane is outside the society that traps Ayumi. In another sense it is easier in some ways for her to conform to the rules of her fantastical shadowy otherworld of assassins. Or if she eventually defied those conventions, say, by sparing a target she was in love with, I suspect she didn’t pay for it in the way Ayumi did.

Ayumi is undeniably far less deep a character than Aomane, but she is also undeniably lovable. Her doom is far more convincing than, say, Fighter from Goblin Slayer, being based in admitted personal flaws and real social problems, rather than a cheaply contrived and exploitative disgrace to cheap pulp fantasy. 

However, her story should not be the only story of women who take issue with institutional stupidity and unfairness, and it is not the only story she might have. I believe I can say it was not the story she deserved, and think you can probably guess what’s coming next.

Sakata Ayumi, Lone Star security troll, painfully felt for a while that she could never meet decent guys because she was a scary, unfeminine troll, or move forward in her career for very similar reasons. Since getting fired and becoming a shadowrunning criminal, however, she’s happily met Aria Landers, Emma ‘Frosty’ Foster, and enough strong but sensitive troll guys to make her a very happy bisexual. As well as acquiring a combat axe and a minigun, she found her totem spirit guide while lost among hostile metaplanes; Tanuki (Racoon), Japan’s famously self-indulgent and bumbling animal spirit. Plus, she kept her skintight black police uniform, and frankly, rocks it.

Okay I do now think it would be cool for Ayumi Stewart from Wave Race to join Smash (might be my fourth highest wish. Second if we’re only talking about characters whose surname is Stewart, at least assuming there’s not something I don’t know about the Proto Beasts and Neo Swords and to be fair, there definitely is but I don’t think them having a surname that happens to be Stewart is among them) and I want her and Robert to join at the same time so everyone (or at least me) can make jokes about everyone in Smash assuming the two of them are related and at the very least Robert has to constantly explain that having the same surname doesn’t make them related (“don’t explain the joke” and everything but I don’t think it was particularly clear I was trying to joke about a shared surname being retconned in Blue Storm so that Ryota Hayami from Wave Race and Akari Hayami from 1080 are siblings)

I’m not here to come up with moveset ideas (just make Robert a moveset clone of Falcon with predominately worse stats but a few things to make him less of a joke. Makes more sense than giving Falcon that moveset and makes about as much sense as giving Ganondorf that moveset) but I think for Ayumi’s Final Smash she should have Robin (her coach) talk to her and instruct her on something
