This is a two part series!
trigger warnings: insomnia, sleep pills, teenage cursing,
"Are you sure this is really what you want to do? I mean we can host the meetings earlier!" Connor rambled as he held the honorary midnight society speaking torch. It was an early Saturday morning, your dad was at another fishing trip which meant you both had free realm to do whatever as long as your dad didn't find out. You grabbed a mug in the kitchen to make some coffee you barely slept before the incident always juggling school, the midnight society and your band sleep paralysis paradise, now the little melatonin sleep you got was plagued with nightmares.
"It's called the midnight society for a reason, besides you knew eventually this was gonna happen." You said as you grabbed the sugar and creamers. You turned, Connor still at the table his partially eaten pancakes in front of him and the torch in his hand. "Yeah but you started this it feels wrong." He shrugged as he took a sip of his coffee.
"I'm moving up not on. There's a distinctive difference little brother. One that you'll understand when you're older." You said smugly. He rolled his eyes at you, "You're like two years at best, older than me." He said as pulled out his phone.
"Still those two years were the quietest of my life." You said placing your hand on your chest to act as if you were fondly remembering something. He picked up the dish towel that was tossed onto the table and threw it at you. "Speaking about quiet, you know that girl Gabby has been seeing, Flynn?"
You nod as you take a sip of your coffee, the caffeinated drink enveloping your taste buds. "Well her best friend is in this band called Julie and The Phantoms. They were supposed to play at the last dance, before the glow dance."
"Yeah, didn't they not show or something?" You asked not remembering much of the dance being as you were off in an abandoned classroom talking with your bandmates about anything to avoid the high school scene that you hardly fit into.
"Well, they're playing the orpheum tonight to open for panic at the disco and flynn managed to save a certain amount of tickets for your band and the midnight society!" He said as you jaw dropped, the orpheum was the starting point for every band that wanted to be something big. It was your short term goal for long term success since freshman year when your band formed. You couldn't lie when you said you were envious that they'd gotten the gig and your band hadn't.
"Holy shit, how did she do that? I've been trying to score opening for the unknown bands for months and struck out!" You said eyes wide, He shrugged, "I don't know, but she told us to never doubt her power. Whatever that means."
After the show you and your group found yourself at a diner a few blocks down. Buzzing with excitement about the show. Your mind casually floating back to the cute guitar player in blue, whose sleeves were non existent.
"Not to shamelessly self promo, but do you think Julie would want to collab with us or something?" Kora, one of your best friends and bassist of sleep paralysis paradise. For a quick second, Flynns poker face faltered at the question. "I can ask but Julie might be busy, with school and everything." She said trailing off in the last part.
"She also just played the orpheum, she's not gonna wanna slum it." Danny , self proclaimed guitar god, said as he stole a fry off your plate. "Whose the slum? Because last i check, i give it my all." Taylor, your drummer, said as they threw a ice cube at him. You rolled your eyes. While taking another sip of your milkshake. The stretched table sitting the midnight society, your band, flynn and nick.
"Oh really like to see you try the riff of now or never? Objections? Didn't think so." Danny said shrugging playfully. "You know sunset curve?" Flynn asked skeptically, which cause her to receive several stares from the table.
"Duh, my uncle was in the industry or something in the nineties. Found this whole box in his garage this summer when i was cleaning, after his funeral. All cassettes of bands that were playing the strip around that time. His husband and their partner just let me have it." He said as rambled before pointing up at the sky, "Uncle G you're a legend!" Causing several of the other late night diner's to look at your table once again.
Flynn's attention turned from the conversation to her phone and she suddenly needed to be excused. "I'll call you later." She said to Gabby before she disappeared for the night. "That was weird." Connor commented, everyone looking around in agreement.
"Danny probably scared her off." Luke said as he bite into a nacho. "Danny scares me on a good day." Jai said nonchalantly, Danny flipped off Jai.
"She probably forgot about her curfew." Hanna suggested as she threw an ice cube at Jai. "Speaking of curfews, whose riding with who?" You asked as you thanked your waiter for bringing the checks to the table.
"I gotta drop the car off to my mom for the night, so i can't drop anyone off. I'm sorry." Gabby said as you all shrugged it off telling her that it wasn't a big deal.
"I can take anyone who lives around my house and the school." Danny said as he pulled his wallet out. "I'll take anyone who lives around the pier or if you're coming over." You said leaning onto the table. "That leaves anyone who lives by me and like farthest is the park." Kora said shrugging on her jacket.
"Ok, so Danny has Jai and Hanna. Kora has Nick and Taylor. I have Connor and Luke." You recapped as you grabbed the money on the table and brought it hostess at the front of the restaurant, before returning to the table. "Lets rock and roll, homies!"
1 week later,
"Hey!" Julie exclaimed as she sat down at the table you were sitting at with your friends. You all exclaimed various greetings. "You're sleep paralysis paradise, right?" She asked with a smile that you were sure was formed with starlight.
"Yeah but usually people don't refer to us as our band name twenty four seven." you laughed slightly, "I'm Y/n, the singer and keyboardist. This is Kora, our bassist. Danny, "guitar god" as he prefers to be called and Taylor our drummer." You said as your friends threw up various hand signals. Kora a small wave, Danny a peace sign and Taylor a two finger salute.
"I'm Julie and my phantoms are not here at the moment." Your face contorted. "That's not them over there." You said as you pointed to the three in the far corner of the cafeteria.
Julies face faltered, "You can see them?"

I don’t usually make posts like this, but given that the finale of season two of the Are You Afraid of the Dark? reboot is tonight, I feel like I have to recommend it because it is now one of my all-time favorite shows.
First, I have to say that I have no recollection of watching the original series (though after tonight, I plan to get the free month trial of Paramount+ to watch it), so I can’t really compare the reboot to it all.
Back when the reboot started in October of 2019, I avoided it. But a repeat of it on Super Bowl Sunday this year changed my mind and I watched the first season of it on-demand in three days (one episode per night and the season consists of three episodes.) It only kept getting better and better, and even though I hated how short the season was, the three episodes did work and kept it all tight. Plus, the music, cinematography, and sound editing/work of both seasons of the reboot are amazing in quality for a limited series on TV. You can tell Nickelodeon really invested in it and didn’t let any money go to waste on the quality of the show.
Though I am an adult, I came to relate and enjoy our teenage characters. They felt realistic, even the ones that weren't on the screen. I found the teenage crushing to be relatable and cringe-y, but the good kind? Like I got flashbacks to my public school years, which wasn’t great, but hey, I related to it. Both seasons hit the right notes with the characters and the chemistry is great between both casts.
Now, I have watched American Horror Story and Hannibal, and I can easily say that this series made me just as uncomfortable and unnerved as them. Heck, I even gasped during the obvious jump scares. I’d say season two is a bit more scarier than season one, but both are enough to make me, an adult, feel uneasy at times. Nickelodeon has pushed the envelope and has had me shocked with what they have shown and pulled with both seasons of the reboot. Yes, Nickelodeon of all networks.
Anyways, I highly recommend watching the reboot if you’re a horror fan or just want something creepy to watch in October or on Halloween. Or just if you want something new to watch.

3 theories I wanna just throw out there before Friday and the next episode (episode 3) of Are You Afraid of the Dark Curse of the Shadows Season 2 comes out.
Tumblr media
Forgive the quality of these pictures I literally have to take screenshots from YouTube or the show on Nickelodeon's website.
Okay so June Murphy as established in Episode 2 is somehow involved in this. At least Connor thought so. He researched her, he prepared to perform a seance with her - which we literally saw in Episode 1. She is somehow an important character to this.
So far this is all we know about her.
Tumblr media
June Murphy, 15 when she passed. Born in 1981, passed on October 15th, 1996 near the lighthouse it is specified. The lighthouse that her father Charlie cares for as his father did. And she was an activist for the planet and all living things. That's not much honestly. Makes it a bit unclear as to why she's be involved. But as Hanna stated, maybe she was one of the Shadowman's victims. And considering as we were warned by Sardo, being in the woods after dark results in being cursed. The Shadowman's spirit is said to live in the old lighthouse, which is surrounded by the woods. Because the woods "guard" where his spirit lives, that makes them all part of his "domain." And also as Sardo said, "Upon nightfall, no child is allowed to enter the haunted woods." I think the fact that they specifically say child and not person is strange. Definitely suggests adults are safe from the Shadowman but not kids. So all this time June must have stayed out of the woods after dark. But at some point, she was there afterwards. Perhaps with her father, learning to take over tending to thr lighthouse someday. Perhaps just a simple not knowing how much time had passed while out there. Regardless, somehow June as potentially been another victim of the Shadowman.
Or is she?
3 theories I have. None have particularly strong evidence I just want to throw then out there.
Theory 1. June wasn't a victim, she's what started all this.
This theory is brought up directly by the show. Hanna literally asks this question in the trailer for the next episodes. Definitely something to consider. We simply don't know that much about June. We don't know why Connor selected her. Why not that little kid Zoey who we literally saw be tormented and presumed taken by the Shadowman during Sardo's warning? Why not anyone at all? What told Connor to reach out to her specifically? Sadly no answers or ideas yet.
Sadly this is pretty heavily into just strong imagination and little evidence territory but here's my theory on a specifically how and why June is what started this theory.
If we go back to June's description in that obituary, it is mentioned she's an environmental activist. (Hmm. Much like Hanna is shown to be...) Again, strong imagination with little evidence territory here but. What if June summoned the Shadowman? What if she intended to summon a spirit in the intents of protecting the woods and instead got the Shadowman? If she was in a situation where she was informed that the woods were going to be destroyed for say making more buildings, and she couldn't do anything to stop it, June went to the extreme and tried to summon a protective spirit while at the light house one night. And this resulted in the Shadowman appearing. This would also explain why his spirit lives in the lighthouse as that's where he crossed over into this world from. Then did she from there become a victim of his? Perhaps even the first? Possibly. It feels a little off though considering the curse appears to be specific to kids, if the woods were in danger of being bulldozed over, it doesn't seem for now like the Shadowman would be a great help with that and especially factoring in that his power is a night based thing whereas construction and bulldozing is definitelymore of a daytime activity. So great job June you managed to accomplish literally nothing but bad things with this summon.
Theory 2 which is a bit extra whack. June IS the Shadowman.
Definitely the wilder of the 3 but allow me to indulge my imagination. I have already been contemplating the idea that the Shadowman is similar to a Wendigo. And while I don't think that they will try to say The Shadowman is one, I think there could be an aspect of human spirit turning into a more malevolent one at play here. Picture it, June is an avid environmentalist again like Hanna is shown to be. But rather than be ignored like Hanna is, what if June is picked on? What if she's even followed one evening by these bullies who can't just leave her be? And then a "tragedy near the lighthouse" occurs? And June is so hurt and angered by that that her spirit cannot rest and becomes the Shadowman? This could potentially explain both the woods being the domain and the lighthouse being where the spirit lives and also explain why kids are being targeted. Much like that one episode of Gravity Falls, the wrath of the spirits haunting that old store went to the teens who terrorized them. And in this case the wrath of June would go towards all who were children or at least "not adults" like the ones who harassed and possibly killed her. And another weird thing that maaaaaybe gives this theory something to stand on is this shot of something from the trailer. A spell from the Book of Shadows.
Tumblr media
The Life from Death Spell
"I seek you in the darkest hour. Hear my plea and give me power. Take me in the black of night, to bring her back into the light. A curse that cannot be reversed, till what was stolen return first. Fire light and shadow black," and then unfortunately the final sentence is blurry and partially covered but I can make out "my life" so I'm guessing the line is "I give my life to pay death back." Very difficult to read but that's my guess.
The fact that this spell specifically appears in the trailer and the words here are hmm definitely seem like they could apply to June...very odd. Particularly the line "to bring her back into the light" is very specific. It makes me wonder if this could be used to try to free June's soul? Not bring her back to life but move her soul into peace so she can move on from her monster state? Or does it support the first theory? Trying to bring forth her soul to speak with her? Or heck is it a third option even?
Theory 3 Trying to actually bring June back to life?
The spell from above is very interesting and I'm the idea of it led me down another plot trail. Could the Shadowman be her father? Similarly to the previous theory, did Charlie's soul become dark? Who in his grief and pain of losing his child become something that seeks out children and tries to drag them away into the darkness, searching for the daughter he will never again find? Seems a little dark and excessive perhaps, but perhaps it would work. Even if just for a moment June was alive again, would it grant him the peace needed to move on and haunt the woods no more?
Also interesting to note, it's October in the show. October is also when June died. And anniversaries can be powerful things. Will the Shadowman regardless of any of these 3 theories have an increase in power due to this anniversary?
If only these darn kids had just gone to bed and waited till the next day to explore the woods and double checked the time when sunset was.
All a bunch of strange ideas without much proof but here you have it. Somethings to consider and possibly be right on. Only time, or rather, the next few episodes will tell.

Are You Afraid Of The Dark (2019): Final Thoughts
Tumblr media
Wow.  Honestly, wow, I was hoping this reboot would be good but I did NOT expect it to be as good as it was.  Everything from the acting, the characters in general, the cinematography and the general concept all came together wonderfully, the following are some loose thoughts I had about the whole thing, and I assure you, none of them are negative.
When the pitch for this originally leaked and it was clear it was going to be a “the story came to life!” plot I was a little skeptical, mostly just because that was literally what the Goosebumps movie did, but man did it work great!  It ended up as a wonderful blend of the fun of having the set cast of the midnight society and the variety of having a new setting every week.  If this mini series gets expanded i’d be more than okay with allowing equal time between the midnight society actors and the stories.
There were so many shots in this series that were genuinely really good, and not in the sense of “well the old show was always shot pretty weird so this one is competent”  I mean really good.  Near every time Mr. Tophat was on screen was a particular treat, excellent shots would constantly highlight how weird his character was and how bizarre the carnival of doom is just under the surface layer of a fun time.
Mr. Tophat himself meanwhile, deserves to go down as one of the best monsters of the franchise.  Not only did his actor fully commit to being this role but he infused the character with so many weird quirks and motivations that he ends up creating someone I wouldn’t even mind coming back for a future installment.  The character is supremely bizarre, almost coming off like some kind of creature that only vaguely knows how humans act and his tragic backstory is way more effective than I ever imagined it could be.  Mr. Tophat was without a doubt the highlight of the show.
The Midnight Society kids did a hell of a job selling the original concept of the show:  a bunch of kids from disparate social circles and friend groups coming together to share in the scary stories they all individually love.  Not one of the actors portraying this new generation of the midnight society was lacking, each bringing something new to the table for a modern incarnation of the show and I really can’t stress how well they all did at that.
The repeated line “It’s all part of the show” was a damn masterstroke, I don’t know who came up with that line to be used through the series, but give them a raise.
I really hope this incarnation of the show comes back next year, or better yet is expanded out to a series.  It’s clear that all the people involved, from production to acting, have a love for the original concept and series that they translated into this new show and I’d love to see more of that up on the screen.  Hell, if the show can be this good again, do we even need a movie?

Are You Afraid of the Dark? DVDs
Adding on to the Are You Afraid of the Dark? revival post covering the 2019, 2021, and 2022 seasons...
All three revival seasons are now available on DVD.
Carnival of Doom’s release was in August 2020. Along with the three episodes of the series, it includes three “fan-favorite” episodes of the “classic series”.
Tumblr media
According to the back cover, the three “classic” episodes are
The Tale of Laughing in the Dark
The Tale of the Ghastly Grinner
The Tale of the Dead Man’s Float
Curse of the Shadows was released on physical media in August 2021 and with six episodes in total, there are no special episodes.
There is, however, the choice of owning it as part of a double pack.
Tumblr media
It’s called a “2-DVD collection” but according to online listings there are 4 discs total. This version contains all 9 episodes of the first two revivals (3 for Carnival + 6 for Shadows), but there are no episodes from previous seasons.
Tumblr media
Ghost Island was the most recent release in August 2023 and other than the four episodes of the season, there are no bonus episodes or exclusives.
It currently does not have any alternatives or combinations with the previous revival seasons.
The DVDs can be purchased at Walmart, Barnes and Noble, and anywhere else DVDs are sold.
The shows can also be purchased digitally on Vudu, Amazon, and YouTube.
Since Are You Afraid of the Dark? is the property of Nickelodeon and Paramount and is also available to stream with a Paramount Plus subscription.
