we all have a struggle meal that we fall back on when the pantry is getting stretched thin. hell, we've all probably hit times where we didn't have anything to eat at all - I know I've been there a few times!

I want to put the spotlight on a fundraiser @eyadblogs has brought to me

he has been trying to raise funds to help his family evacuate gaza - and while that is something he's still striving for, right now he's just trying to get enough money to buy supplies to make food for his family.

right now, his short-term goal is to raise 500 euros so he can buy food - though if we can get him beyond 500 euros, that is also good!

I've donated 50 euros towards his campaign, and if anyone can match me that would be amazing! aside from myself, the last donation was one day ago. if you can't match me, that is also fine! just give what you can - whatever you're able to donate, it'll all add up in the end.

Second post of the night!

Some character exploration stuff I’ve had sitting around for a while, I go back and forth on sharing this kind of stuff because I can never really tell if it’s good enough to post? Anyway, spur of the moment decision, so here they are!

My characters, Lilith, Yusef Mustafa and Abraham the Mage

Some of these are oldies but still relevant to the story I’m trying to tell! Lots of loose sketches, nothing really tight because I’m still working out designs (especially Yusef’s)

There are some bird men floating around too, but Khonsu is getting a bit of an update (and I’m fleshing out his own human disguise)

he loves having an arm slung around your shoulder

when he sees your favorite color he thinks "y/n would like this" lmao

he's always bragging about you let's be honest

he doesn't like his hair being touched at all

but if you're in the hairstyling community, he'll allow you to practice on it sometimes

homeland elegies by ayad akhtar: a very personal story of a man and his father dealing with feelings of dispossession and belongings. again one of the best books in the world.

NON-FICTION

the three mothers by anna malaika tubbs: the story of the three women who raised and shaped martin luther king jr., malcolm x and james baldwin.

how to say babylon by safyia sinclair: a memoir of a childhood shaped by a volatile father.

beautiful country by qian julie wang: after moving from china to the usa young qian finds a place among books as her family struggles to adapt to their new home as undocumented immigrants.

between the world and me by ta-nehisi coates: a black father shares his fears for his son growing up in current day america.

Thank you @charliemwrites for creating Castle (Captain Daddy) because now I’ve been thinking (also thanks for giving me the ‘okay’ to write this).

Djamilla had a love-hate relationship with traveling back to Morocco to visit her family. It wasn’t a regular trip, maybe once or twice a month at most and for roughly two weeks. She loved her parents and cousins, her siblings never really around when she was there, but her mother would always drag her to get her changed into more “traditional” clothes, asking why she was always dressed in such heavy clothing (jeans and a long sleeve shirt most often with her boots) and styling her hair.

She brought Castle with her one time, warning him about her parents while assuring him that they were good people and he had nothing to worry about as long as he didn’t walk in wearing his usual attire. Thankfully he listened and decided to go for a pair of shorts and a t-shirt.

Her father approved towards the end of their visit while her mother approved almost instantly, complimenting him and telling Djamilla she had good taste and that he was welcome to visit any time.

That trip was also the first time he got to see her in anything besides jeans and a shirt or her gear, rather enjoying seeing her hair down, makeup on and wearing dresses and jewelry, not that he really felt much different seeing her how she normally dressed, it was just a welcomed surprise.

Tinariwen – Brooklyn Steel - July 26, 2024
