Dc x Dp Prompt #21: Petition to the King

I haven’t done one of these in a while so here we go:

AU where Thomas and Martha Wayne live in the Ghost Zone version of Gotham and have been collecting signatures from the other ghosts there for a few years now. Since the Ghost Prince Phantom has finally come of age and is now able to hold court/assemblies they approach him with their official petition and beseech him: Please allow them avenge their grandson and countless other souls, who’ve signed agreeing to the petition, to haunt and torment the Joker for the rest of his living days. May he never find peace even in sleep, even in death.

Danny being the gracious prince he is agrees. Even going as far as to take the names of literally everyone on the list and create a haunting rotation, for who gets to torment the Joker on which days, with Thomas and Martha having first dibs.

The grandson in question is a revenant and thus also eligible to be put on the haunting rotation so Danny decides to reach out and go to Gotham himself and ask if he wants to haunt the Joker with his grandparents. Thomas and Martha tag along bc they wanna visit their grand-babies, their son, and their partner who raised him.

Jason isn’t sure what to make of his doting ghostly grandparents, the beautiful interdimensional king, or the apparent laundry list of people ready to mess with the Joker’s mind, but hey! If he can’t kill the Joker, eternal torment isn’t a bad deal to swing!

I'm aware that this is largely just a direct result of adapting similar story arcs from the comics, but one of the biggest strengths of EMH is the sheer number of antagonist groups working at active cross-purposes; the show is heavily invested in depicting an ebb-and-flow super-villainous ecoysystem in a way that the MCU still can't hold a candle to after 15-plus years. Supervillain-backed coups in Wakanda to enable resource extraction, Rival terror groups duking it out in the streets. Grim Reaper bending the knee off-screen to an unseen-but-alluded-to Kingpin in order allow Hydra to operate in New York without opening another front in their war. Kang invading from the future to head off the burgeoning Kree-Skrull War, while the Skrulls run circles around everybody. A gang of supervillains take over and fortify their former prison and nearly get to the finish line on their own world-domination scheme without ever learning or caring whose larger scheme their mass breakout was acting as a distraction for. Avengers Vol 9 #1, part 1 of 2. This issue bounces between the formation of the new Avengers team and the threat they're currently fighting - I'll talk about the team in this post, and the threat in the second. Anyway. Apparently the most recently active Avengers have voted Carol to be their new chairperson, which means she gets to put together a new team. She thinks about why everyone does what they do - for Tony, it's because he wants to make up for his past; for Carol, it's Earth - "a gem of infinite worth".

Tony, looking really hecking handsome, tells her she needs to build her roster as they chill out in the Jarvis Lounge. She tells him he's his first pick. Aww. "You're my sponsor. Of course I need you. And given current events, you need us." It's hard to pin down what event she's talking about exactly, but since Tony still has his Mark 70 armor, it's probably the blowing up of his brownstone in IIM #1.

From there, she also asks Thor so that he can be the powerhouse, then T'Challa, "the most dangerous man alive". He's apparently not on great terms with the Avengers due to some previous event involving sleeper cells and kill-switch protocols, and he's not king or even officially the Black Panther anymore. Still, he's smart - "not the same way that Tony's smart", but rather canny, and in the end, he's still an Avenger. "Come home," she tells him.

Then she finds Steve and Sam training with each other in the Lower East Side. They all have a chuckle as they call each other "Cap". Then Carol asks if Sam will join the team, because they need a normal person instead of only stacking the team full of unusual people, and Sam is the closest thing there is to that. He accepts. Steve seems fine with this, and we know he'll go on to lead the Uncanny Avengers soon, so all is well.

Finally, she asks Vision, who is brooding a bit after the events of Judgment Day (no idea what that is), and Wanda, who preemptively accepts, calling the Avengers the one point of stability in her entire life, aw. And that rounds out the team!
