Sauron might have bound himself to his physical form in Tolkien legendarium, after all
And what does this mean for his "Rings of Power" character arc?
I’ve come across this amazing Tolkien legendarium YouTube channel today, and here the author explains how Sauron, like Morgoth before him, bound himself to his physical form before the Fall of Númenor:
youtube
This theory combines evidence from several of Tolkien works: "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, "The Silmarillion", "Morgoth’s ring" and "Nature of Middle-earth".
This actually makes a lot of sense as to why Sauron physical form in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy only has four fingers (the one cutted out by Isidulr is missing, even after his “re-embodiment”). This is similar to what happened to Melkor after he became bound to his physical form; he, too, had wounds that never healed (for instance, the burns on his hands from holding the Silmarils).
"The Black Hand of Sauron" drawn by Tolkien
But true 'rational' creatures, 'speaking peoples', are all of human / 'humanoid' form. Only the Valar and Maiar are intelligences that can assume forms of Arda at will. In any case is it likely or possible that even the least of the Maiar would become Orcs? Yes: both outside Arda and in it, before the fall of Utumno. Melkor had corrupted many spirits - some great, as Sauron, or less so, as Balrogs. The least could have been primitive (and much more powerful and perilous) Orcs; but by practising when embodied procreation they would (cf. Melian) [become] more and more earthbound, unable to return to spirit-state (even demon-form), until released by death (killing), and they would dwindle in force. When released they would, of course, like Sauron, be 'damned': i.e. reduced to impotence, infinitely recessive: still hating but unable more and more to make it effective physically. Myths Transformed: Orcs; "Morgoth's Ring"
This confirms that Sauron, after having his physical form destroyed during the Fall of Númenor, has been “dammed” and he’s reduced to impotence. We know this already because he loses the ability to take on fair form after this event.
Binding to a Physical Form
But the question is: how did Sauron bound himself to his physical form?
Morgoth, we know, it was due to his endless corruption of Arda, for thousands of years. And this included the corruption of other Ainur (several Maiar), creatures, children of Ilúvatar (orcs), etc.
The things that are most binding [to Valar and Maiar] are those that in the Incarnates have to do with the life of the hroa itself, its sustenance, and its propagation. Thus eating and drinking are binding, but not the delight in beauty of sound and form. Most binding is begetting or conceiving. We do not know the axani (laws, rules, as primarily proceeding from Eru) that were laid down upon the Valar with particular reference to their state, but it seems clear that there was no axan against these things. Nonetheless it appears to be an axan, or maybe necessary consequence, that if they are done, then the spirit must dwell in the body that is used, and be under the same necessities as the Incarnate. The only case that is known in the histories of the Eldar is that of Melian (...) The great Valar do not do these things: they beget not, neither do they eat and drink, save at the high asari, in token of their lordship and indwelling of Arda, and for the blessing and sustenance of the Children. Melkor alone became at last bound to a bodily form. Note 5 (“Vinyar Tengwar”) of “Osanwe-kenta"
Side note: when Tolkien says "Melkor alone" it means the only Vala to bound himself to a physical form was Morgoth. He's speaking of the Valar in particular, here. He also tells us the Eldar were only aware of Melian as the only Maiar to bound itself to a physical form, but, as we know, the Eldar aren’t aware of everything that happens in the world.
The Fanar [physical form] of the Valar were not “phantoms”, but “physical”: that is, they were not “visions” arising to the mind, or implanted there by the will of a superior mind or spirit, and then projected, but received through the bodily eyes. [...] It is said that the longer and the more the same hröa [body] is used, the greater is the bond of habit, and the less do the “self-arrayed” desire to leave it. As raiment may soon cease to an adornment, and becomes (as is said in the tongues of both Elves and Men) a “habit”, customary garb [...] [If] the spirit (that is, one of the those not embodied by creation) [Valar and Maiar] uses a hröa for the furtherance of its personal purposes, or [still more] for the enjoyment of bodily faculties. It finds it increasingly difficult to operate without the hröa. “The Visible Forms of the Valar and Maiar, “The Nature of Middle-earth"
"Begetting and conceiving” might, indeed, mean more than just standard reproduction, because Morgoth did “begot” with creation and mastery of several races and creatures. However, the only other example of a Ainur (in this case a Maia) getting bound to a physical form in the lore is Melian, when she became pregnant with Lúthien (after reproducing with her Elf lover, Thingol).
How did this happen?
But Sauron didn’t exactly “begot” with creation like Morgoth did. We know, for a fact, he did not impregnate any Orcs during his “breeding of the Orcs” project in the First Age, because he would have bound himself to a Orc physical form, and that never happened.
And “Rings of Power” fans know this too, because Sauron would never have looked like this if he did. He would have a Orc physical form:
He would have never been able to take on the "Halbrand" form either. Nor the Annatar form, for that matter. In Season 1, and Season 2 of "Rings of Power", Sauron isn't bound to his physical form. The fact it's the same actor is irrelevant, because these are two different physical forms (one is a man, the other an elf).
One could argue Sauron bound himself to his physical form because of the One ring. But the One ring is a piece of jewelry, not the physical body his immortal spirit inhabits, like Tolkien tells us. He’s bound to the ring, yes, but apparently, he bound himself to his physical form, too, and for that reason, when he “re-embodied” after the Fall of Númenor, he was “damned” and “reduced to impotence”, and could no longer take “fair form” to deceive others.
This “binding” happened somewhere in the Second age timeline (which encapsulates thousands of years) before the Fall of Númenor. From the lore, we know that Maiar are at risk of binding themselves to a physical form when they overindulge on it: too much eating, drinking, sleeping, f*cking, etc.
However, we know that Sauron shapeshifts a lot in the lore, so his risk of binding himself to any physical form is lowered than the average Maiar. So, how did this happened?
The fastest way for him to bind himself to his physical form is to father a child, this much we know. But why would Sauron ever want a child? Especially in the legendarium, we don't have candidates for the mother (I know, I know, folks from the 1970's disagree).
One time, I joked Sauron was the only iconic supervillain in pop culture without grandchildren, and that “Rings of Power” just gave us Sauron x Galadriel. Don’t tell me they’ll actually go with the insane “Half-Maia Celebrían” theory.
Or maybe Sauron threw too much parties at Mordor and got wasted on a regular basis? Too much to eat? Too much fornication? Giving away those rings was wild, then.
We are not sure if Sauron will keep his Elf form (“Annatar”) for his Nine rings of power plan, and “King of Men” plot in Season 3 and Season 4. He might choose to take on a Man form, once again. If he does, he was clearly not bound to the Annatar form. So we’ll have to wait and see, on that one.

On Maiar Forms Part 1
I’m still fairly new to Tolkien, but I wanted to share my understanding from some deep dives on Maiar being bound to their forms (with a haladriel lens, I’m feral over them). Part 2 here, deeper analysis here
So, hröa (physical form) was known to be self-arraying, but could become something more binding. “It is said that the longer and the more the same hröa is used, the greater is the bond of habit.” It can settle into the Maiar but can also make them weaker and more dependent on their physical forms. (I've got a concept swirling of Sauron having found/formed a ‘greater bond of habit’ in being Halbrand, “Lost King”, the “hero she seeks”)
This is fascinating to me: “If a ‘spirit’...uses a hröa for the furtherance of its personal purposes… it finds it increasingly difficult to operate without the hröa.” It’s most likely meant to mean literally, do earthly things and you can’t reach higher states, but I think you could interpret this as there’s an attachment that forms; the longer Sauron spent as Halbrand, eating, drinking, and living as a Man, (loving Galadriel) the more the form lingered. (not to mention as Annatar, conniving and wicked, but soooo obviously pining after Galadriel every moment he could)
The most binding things “have to do with the life of the hröa itself, its sustenance and its propagation.” “Eating and drinking are binding, but not the delight in beauty of sound or form.” Ah, Tolkien, ever lofty. “Most binding is begetting or conceiving,” so having a child would bind Sauron to his form. (but these quotes, I’ll expand on in part 2, are in footnotes of appendices of nearly lost bits of work so as fandom my perspective is go nuts)
But then the text says more or less, hey Eru doesn’t outright say Maiar and Valar doing all this is bad and sinful, and that “it seems clear that there was no axan (Quenya for rule/law/commandment) against these things.” Then immediately turns and says “Nonetheless it appears to be an axan, or maybe necessary consequence, that if they are done, then the spirit must dwell in the body that it used, and be under the same necessities as the Incarnate.” It’s a rule, but it’s not a rule, but it’s ehhh it’s a rule.
But I think what Tolkien is almost certainly suggesting is that being bound to a form is a consequence of indulging in earthly pleasures, which is….baked into much of his work. Earthly pleasures and indulgence and lust are bad; lofty ideals and pursuits above the flesh are good.
However, the only instance in Eldar culture where a Maiar went against this axan is Melian, where it says, “This certainly was not evil or against the will of Eru, and though it led to sorrow, both Elves and Men were enriched.” I think that’s significant, story-wise.

So I was thinking about Mandos and afterlife in Legendarium (as you do), and I came up with some HC/thoughts about Men.
Warnings: ghosts. Implied possibility of Hell??? (Those are two different things). Should this be a warning? It's creepy. And typically not talked about in the context of Legendarium, except some really weird questions people asked Tolkien and that one fic?
Those are all HCs based on vibe + what seems to make sense to me + what fits for me with other things. I think none of them contradicts canon, but they aren't very supported either.
First: ghosts. I wish I came up with it earlier, now it's probably a bit too late…. still, I hope to see that story someday!
So, Men have the thing that I quoted earlier today:
have a virtue to shape their life, amid the powers and chances of the world, beyond the Music of the Ainur, which is as fate to all things else
I read it as the Men can do a lot of things with their fate that the Elves cannot, and while they can't permanently bind themselves to Arda and become immortal, they can, in some circumstances, bind themselves temporarily. I'm not sure if it can be done on purpose, maybe it can (counterargument is that the Numenoreans tried to find a way to do it and failed), but we've seen it done accidentally.
We've seen: Aragorn's ghost army of Men who bound themselves to their oath (you know, who can't bind themselves to an oath this strongly? Yes, those 8 guys. Because the Men have safety switches turned off and can do more, for better and for worse.), Gorlim who bound himself by breaking his loyalty (idk if there was a formal oath involved), the Nine who bound themselves – well, accepted Sauron binding them, but it's much the same thing — with the rings.
Sidenote: The Norns are three kinds of (fate? something): things that have happenned, things that happen now, and debts/obligations/"should" (it's etymologically that!)
TBH I know very little about them, so I maybe misinterpreting. anyway, the point is that debts, oaths and obligations are a form of a self-imposed destiny. Or at least let's assume that they are.
So yes, Men can linger as ghosts if there's something keeping them: some debt or obligation. And only as long as this thing is keeping them. When it ends, they land in the normal situation, same as Men who have just died.
And, strangely, I don't think Námo has a lot to do with those ghosts. Based on thematic and visual elements I would say: Vaire if any of the Valar deals with it. Because she reminds me of the Norns. (But this is a purely aestethical choice: you could have Námo managing all of those situation and it would still work. Just… debt-ghosts and Men who die properly are a different pipeline in the Halls.)
Námo deals with processing the Men who are leaving, not the Men who are bound (until they are not longer bound). And now we get to the stranger/less canon-based part: Men too can refuse the call of Mandos.
Why? Because I said so because this leaves space for … things I won't write about anyway? IDK. It would seem strange to me if the elves could and Men couldn't.
However, unlike Elves, they cannot linger on their own (as in: without the circumstances mentioned above), and the call is a one-time event for them*.
(And the debt-ghosts get the call when their debt is gone. Earlier it... blosks the call, sort of? Postpones it? IDK but it makes sense to me.) Edit: OK, this doens't make a lot of sense probably... Probably it makes more sense to be call→they talk with Námo→sent to linger because of their stuff→deal with their stuff. But this makes it harder to write. Or at least less fun to write because the ghosts don't have the type of agency that I like when writing? Hmm... I'm not sure I'll probably edit this part some more.
So the Men either go to Mandos, are processed (with more or less arguing with Námo and difficulty) and leave; or they refuse the call, but can't (as in: it's a law of (meta)physics, not just a moral law, Iforgot the Tolkien word… axan?) stay on Arda, so… something else happens with them? Probably not pleasant? I won't delve deeper into this question.
*For Elves the call of Mandos canonically a permanent thing and they can follow it at any time, it is said in one of NoME or similar book. If they don't follow it immediately, it's bad for their state and for their chances of reembodiment. And they can be caught and necromanced. But still, they can go to Mandos late.

Yunan mifologiyasına görə, Qədim zamanlarda biri-birini çox sevən iki gənc var imiş. Qızın adı Thispe, oğlanın adı isə Pyramus idi. Çox üzülür, ağlamaqdan bir təhər olan qız, şərfinin yarısının Pyramusun əlində, yarısının isə öz yuvasına gedən aslanın ağzında görəndə hər şeyi başa düşür və xəncəri götürüb, o da öz ürəyinə sancır ki, sevgilisinə qovuşsun. Elə bu anda yunan tanrıları, bu eşqi ölümsüzləşdirmək istəyiblər və altında canlarını fəda etdikləri ağacı, bu ikiliyə həsr ediblər. Belə ki, Pyramusun qanını ağacın meyvəsinə, Thispenin gözyaşlarını isə ağacın yarpaqlarına çeviriblər. O gündən bəri qara tutun çıxmayan ləkəsini yəni Pyramusun qanını, ağacın yarpaqları yəni Thispenin göz yaşları təmizləyir.

bir neçə ay əvvəl bildiriş gəldi ki, bu bloqun 10 illik yubileyidi. gördüm 10 il əvvəl hardaydımsa, elə indi də ordayam. əslində bəzi şeylər dəyişib, 10 il əvvəl yazdığım yerlərdən yazmıram indi. məsələn iş kompyuterimin qabağında oturub bu yazını yazmaq çox qəribədi. elə bilirəm əynimdə kostyum boğazımı qalstuk sıxır. amma mən onsuz da evdən işləyirəm, kostyum geyiniləsi işim də olmayıb heç vaxt. adətən dost-tanışın toyunda kostyum geyinməmiş o qəribə adam mən olurdum. arada anam pis olurdu qohumların yanında, sonra həmin qohumların başı qarışırdı boşanmağa, bizim də yadımızdan çıxırdı. hərdən fikirləşirəm ki, elə vəziyyətlərdə niyə anam mənim tərəfimi tutmurdu, amma öz azadlıq prinsiblərimi ondan da gözləməyim mənim səhvim idi yəqin ki. belə baxanda 2-3 saatlıq kostyum geyinsəydim də ölməzdim ki, kimə nəyi sübut eləməyə çalışırdım guya. elə sonra da bütün toylara eyni kostyumu geyinib getdim. son bir neçə il özümə kimə nəyi sübut eləməyə çalışırsan deyə-deyə bütün prinsiblərimdən əl çəkdim. noviembredə axırda deyir ki, dünyanı dəyişməyə çalışırdıq, uğursuz olduq. indi isə çalışıram dünya məni dəyişməsin. yəqin ki, bu səhnədən sonra kino qurtarmasa, mənə də bir səhnə versəydilər deyərdim ki, indi isə çalışıram dünya məni dəyişməsin, amma yenə də uğursuz oldum. hər şeyin başın o qədər buraxmışam ki, məni özümdən çıxartmaq indi çox çətindi. hər şeyə baş üstə deyib, yola gedirəm. arada da elə yerlərdə özümdən çıxıram ki, elə bil dünyanın ən əsəbi insanı mənəm. deyəsən bəzən özümü cəzalandırmaq istəyirəm, dəxlisiz yerlərdə insanların üstünə qışqırıb, hərdən təhdid də eləyirəm. indi mənə polislə hədə qorxu gəlirlər. oturub gözləyirəm ki, bəlkə bu dəfə çağırdılar, amma heç kim şikayət eləmir. yəqin onların da mənə yazığı gəlir, elə mənim özümün özümə gəldiyi kimi. sevgilim balkona çıxıb bir ayağını balkondan aşağı salanda bildim ki, bəzən mən də insanları özündən çıxarıram. sonra başa düşdüm ki, o böyük manipulyatordu, mən isə qurban. bütün situasiyalarda özümü qurban göstərməyi bacarıram. əslində heç bəlkə də sevgilim olmağını da istəməmişdim, prosto qəlbin qırmamaq üçün baş üstə deyib yola getmişdim. elə ən bərbad doğum günümü də, ən bərbad yeni ili də onunla keçirmişdim. amma hər dəfə gözündən axan bir yaşa ürəyim ağrayırdı. əslində onun da günahı yoxdu, insanlarla aram yaxşı deyil. istəmirəm heç kim daimi həyatıma girsin, buna görə onlara hər şey eləməyə hazıram. bəlkə də elə ən böyük manipulyator mənəm. özümün canı cəhənnəmə, əsas odu heç kim məndən qabaq ölməsin. hərdən başa sala bilmirəm ki, məndən əvvəl həyatıma girmiş insanlara heç nə edə bilmirəm, amma məndən sonrakıları istəmirəm. qazanmağın bir tərəfi də itirməkdi. nə vaxtsa itirmək qorxusundansa heç vaxt qazanmamaq daha xoşdu.
