Scott won.

For a moment, he won.

And then he lost. Then he lost everything.

The sensation was excruciating. Acutely agonizing — absolutely gruelling. It felt like every muscle in his body, every tendon and tissue, had been set on fire, a matchlit spark in a dry desert savannah that spread through every fibre of his being, pain infecting and inflicted in every nook and cranny of him, fused with his fuselage. It was an inferno, a bonfire of agony, of combustion and conflarigation, as if his sinews and thews were being torn apart, protoplasm and potency pilfered and pulverized. Electricity coursed through his veins as if they were overhead power lines, screeching and searing through his bloodstream with galavanting galvanism, making it seem as if his blood was on fire as an undercurrent of static electrified his entire being, ruthlessly ripping and shredding. It hurt — it hurt so much. It hurt more than anything he’d ever felt. It was like being torn apart and reconstructed, atom by atom, the lightning paralyzing his vocal cords so he couldn’t even scream.

But it wasn’t the pain that hurt the most. It was the knowledge. That despite everything, that despite being the last one standing, even he hadn’t gotten a happily ever after — not even he had been allowed to live his life in peace after so much bloodslaughter and death. No, the Gods refused to allow him to have that luxury, to allow anybody to have that luxury… even the winner was a loser. There was no winners in games like these: and he’d been a fool to think otherwise.

Scott didn’t know what he expected after death. He didn’t have much of an idea of an afterlife — would it be darkness, an unending void, where his soul would rot for eternity in the endless abyss? Would it be white pearly gates, where he’d reunite with Pearl and Cleo, where they could spend the rest of their life — afterlife — in peace? He didn’t know. He certainly preferred the latter.

So you can imagine his surprise when he was met with none of these. Because the last thing he’d expected after loosing his last life was to wake up and be alive again.

He found himself buried in a mound of powdered snow, snowdrift and sleet cushioning his figure like a mattress, a frosty fleece covering his body like a blanket as Scott frantically kicked the polar quilt off himself with a hoarse, breathless gasp once he regained his senses and wits about him. Flecks of flurries and flakes decorated his hair like icing atop a cake, but he didn’t even notice — didn’t even feel the frostbite nipping at his fingertips — in his state of disorientation and benumbed numbness. A thousand questions flooded his mind, a faucet with no floodgate.

Where was he? How was he alive? He should’ve been dead. He died; that was his final life. He had none left. He was dead — perma-dead. You don’t respawn after you perma-die. That’s how it works — how the game works. And yet… he did, somehow. Was it because he ‘won’? He didn’t know. And, wherever he was, it wasn’t at his bed, and it wasn’t at spawn, either, and those are the only two places you respawn after you die. He was in an entirely-newly generated world — one without hastily-made dirt towers, or walls of lava falling from the sky, or scorched forestry, or the shells of builds exploded by bombshells. This was unknown territory — a place untouched by the players vengeance and bloodshed. Just like their world had been, so long ago, when they were all green lives, when the world still fresh and new—

—Wait. If he respawned, after his final death, then…

Cleo. Pearl.

He didn’t waste another second. Despite the fact his limbs were heavy, listlessly languid and numb with lingering paralysis from being used as a live lightning rod, he ignored his stumbly limbs and the way his brains commands always seemed to have about a 2 second delay from his body as he staggered and lurched blindly through the untouched wilderness. He was a bumbling blunder, right now, but he didn’t care. He had to find them — Girlboss and Gaslight. He prayed to whatever Gods which had just so mercilessly struck him down to have mercy in this regard and let them be here. Let him find them. Let them be alive again.

It seemed the merciless Gods had had some mercy on him. Because he did.

He almost didn’t believe it when he saw her crafting outside the underside of a cave. When he saw Pearl — he was so blinded by the sheer thought of her being alive he even didn’t notice the ragged scar along her left eye that had definitely not been there before, or the strange red cloak she was wearing, or her fluffy ears, her sharpened canines… he didn’t noice the minute differences; all he saw was his ally. His best friend. His everything. The one he’d thought he’d lost. But the one he’d found again.

“Pearl—! Pearl, Pearl—“

He hugged her before she even had a chance to turn around and see him. He hugged her tight; he hugged her tighter than he’d ever hugged anybody before, with as much solace and ardor and warmth as he could muster after having been freezing in the powdered snow, because he couldn’t fathom the idea of losing her, not again, now that they were together again. Now that they’d found each other.

He’d found her. He’d found the Girlboss to his Gatekeep.

She was alive.

for context, the start of the playlist is abt how dl pearl feels like she’s a temporary replacement for ll pearl ( ll pearl was stuck in the ether for a while and so ll scott teamed with dl pearl while waiting for him to arrive to have an alliance in the meantime + prove not all scotts r bad ! ). obviously their temporary alliance turned permanent when ll pearl saw ll scott teaming with dl pearl while waiting for him and abandoned him for ‘cheating’ on him by teaming with her . in which, both of them respectively abandoned by their og pearls/scotts, ll scott and dl pearl’s team-up became permanent and they became the powerduo of the server !

VOTE DL RANCHERS !!!!!! HERE'S A LONGER SUMMARY OF THEIR RELATIONSHIP IN THIS AU ;

at the beginning of the awol au, jimmy felt awful abt causing their death in dl, and felt him/his curse had dragged tango down with him to the grave. so when awol started, he broke up with tango / refused to team with him again , bc he didn’t want his rancher to be stuck in the canary’s cage with him anymore, and now that they weren’t soulbound tango could finally be ‘free of him’. tango!!!!! did not see it that way!!!!!!! he was heartbroken and upset jim was breaking up with him. and so!!!! they danced :) jimmy played with fire :) and jimmy got burnt. they were separate for a while after that. tango had HIS suicide arc where he tried to get himself killed first to prove jimmy wasn’t cursed and wasn’t dragging him down (but rather he was dragging himself down). didn’t work. then after stopping tango’s suicide arc they made up for about 0.2 seconds before tango PERMADIED in a TRAGIC FALLING ACCIDENT and jimmy thought it was an omen from the watchers telling him he was a curse and that by making up with tango he’d killed him and that he was going to hurt everyone he loved by simply loving them. then jimmy had HIS self-destructive suicide arc where he tried to make everyone who’d ever loved him hate him so nobody would revive him when he died - so that when jimmy finally did what he was supposed to do, so that when the canary finally croaked, nobody would bring him back. bring his curse back. he couldn’t drag anyone down else with him if he was already sitting at the bottom. ALSO did not work. BUT then they got to have their healing arc :) he and tango talked and they both apologized and tango reassured him that he wasn’t a curse he was a blessing and they could fight fate together :) they’re no longer suicidal yippee!!!! they’re currently working on. is this ranch 4.0???? it’s made out of obsidian so nobody can burn it down and it’s the ugliest thing ever and its perfect
