Frankly, and I haven’t finished all of the Lupin III media so bear with me, I feel like we should’ve had an episode where the gang just tells scary stories, all the stories come true, and then at the end Pops comes out, tells the best one by far, and makes a bigger mess by doing so

I like when Zenigata's portrayed as a pathetic loser, but I also really like how every once in awhile you get scenes like this where it's like, "no way he's actually awesome."

I've been think about how a Ace Attorney-Lupin III crossover would playout. Usually, I see people pitch the idea of Phoenix having to defend Lupin from a crime he didn't commit, which is a very fun idea. Though - and this is something I admit is boneheadness from my part in the way I interpret Lupin's character - I can't ever a situation where Lupin goes to court and doesn't have full control of the situation and a escape route in mind, which would take away the fun of the Ace Attorney part of the equation. But again, you could just do that anyway for the sake of a fun story.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My idea would be to have Inspector Zenigata be framed for murder and for Phoenix and his team to represent him. The Lupin gang knows Pops is innocent, and know who is trying to frame him, so they decide to team up with Phoenix to help Zenigata's case. So now Phoenix has to solve a case where he can't let on that he is working with one of the most famous criminal crews in history, which can lead to a ton of fun comedic and awesome moments. Honestly the bulk of this idea is having the Wright Anything Agency lawyers and Lupin's crew just interact with each other. Feels like you get a ton of great moments just from that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, it let's us explore a bit of Lupin and his crew's relationship with Zenigata, since they would be doing this for him just 'cause they can't have they're favorite inspector be thrown in jail for a crime he didn't commit - though we can also say they want to rob the people framing Zenigata of whatever valuables they have as well.

I was genuinely looking forward to Lupin vs Holmes in part 6, but what a disappointment it was. Actually, disappointment is too weak a word. In my opinion, it was pretty much a disaster.
There were so many reasons to be hyped for that crossover. You've got Holmes, the greatest detective of his time, and Lupin, the greatest thief of his. They're both canny, eccentric, and always a step ahead of everyone else. They're also both independent and live by their own set of morals. Holmes picks which cases he'll take without concern for money, and lets people go even if they're guilty if his own convictions say they don't deserve punishment. Lupin always does what he wants, doesn't let himself get pushed around, and enjoys wreaking havoc among inhumane criminals just as much as he enjoys flouting the law.
They're even perfectly matched in the ways they're different. I was open to them either liking or disliking each other (though I feel convinced they'd definitely have respect for each other), because I can see either take making sense. Holmes is calculations with a pinch of chaos, Lupin is chaos with a measured dash of calculation. Holmes eschews relationships aside from a very few - Lupin enjoys social interaction (but prioritizes just a few). Holmes is functionally asexual. Lupin is never not horny.
Even the supporting cast was so promising! To tell the truth, from watching previous seasons I didn't really think the rest of the Lupin gang or Watson would have much to do. But I hoped they would because there was so much potential.
I mean Jigen and Watson are both war veterans in their own way. It's not the best comparison (Watson was a doctor, and got shot almost immediately... but he is also a "man of action" and does have a lot of fight and pluck, even if he's not going to be a match for Jigen in terms of marksmanship). And they're the right hand men of two pretty difficult geniuses... couldn't they spend a moment commiserating lmao.
It could have been awesome to see Fujiko interact with Holmes because her usual tricks wouldn't work on him. I admit it isn't unlikely the show would have been like "Ahh, but this time they do work on him, just like Irene Adler!" and totally ignored that book!Irene impressed Holmes with her wiliness and not her sexiness... But I'm talking about my fantasy here. And in my fantasy, Holmes would have had a similar reaction to Fujiko's manipulation and acting skills similar to how he did with Irene. It would have been pretty cool to see Fujiko interact with a man who was NOT into her, but was just as smart and brave and perhaps wiser than Lupin.
Even Goemon would have had something to do. He could have had a super cool kenjutsu vs baritsu ("what even is that?") battle with Holmes. Extra points if Goemon walks away saying "I respect the skill of that fellow warrior, even if he can't spell his own martial art correctly."
And of course Lestrade and Zenigata's shenanigans at Scotland Yard are a nobrainer. But serious bonus points if they both pine away with equal envy and admiration for their respective smart ass thorns in the side hahahahahahaha.
I mean. There was SO MUCH there. How, HOW do you mess that up???
(Answer: By knowing absolutely nothing about Sherlock Holmes to begin with and basing everything on your memories of inaccurate movies from fifty years ago x'D)
So instead we got: perpetually sad, somber Sherlock Holmes, who isn't working the job that he literally loves anymore in favor of looking miserable a lot and raising a child. And the child is Watson's kid, who Watson can't raise because he's fucking DEAD, and mom can't raise because SHE'S dead (just say Holmes is her mom. Come on. We're in the future. Just say it). Also Watson is dead because Lestrade killed him like WHAT. Of all the twists they could have gone one, they definitely surprised me with that one. Was it a fun surprise though? ... No, no it wasn't.
Add to that the extremely dull characterizations of everyone, the heavy reliance on the danger to a little girl who isn't even a canonical character but is very cute, and the slow, slow pace of the episodes... What a mess. It was memorable, sure, but for the wrong reasons.
Like the only thing I can think of that I didn't hate about the whole arc was Lily taking her first steps as Holmes's assistant at the very end. Fine, that's adorable, and makes me feel ever so slightly better about Watson being dead. And I'm desperate for something to like here so let's go with it.
("It's not really Sherlock Holmes anyway because of the generational difference, it's his great grandson who has his exact same name and job! Same with Watson and Lestrade and sexy Mrs Hudson and and and-" I'm gonna stop you right there we all know it's Holmes. Whatever excuses they make, no matter how they have to bend time and physics to make it happen, it is Holmes Prime in every way that matters lol.)
A melancholy sigh for the Coolest Crossover Ever That Wasn't. As a Lupin fan and a Sherlock Holmes fan, I'll regret it till the day I die.

I think the character in TWCFM seem darker partially because A) the giddy cartoon lens is taken off when they show violence, B) Zenigata is like that so technically he is a darker version of himself even if the others aren’t, C) Everyone forgets that Lupin matches his violence level to the situation. The situations he’s being put in are super violent so he’s being more lax about how much violence and killing he lets happen around him. Like if a bad guy decides that violence needs to be an 11 on a scale of 1-10 Lupin takes off his kiddy gloves so long as there’s not like- a child around.
Agreed! And even though Lupin is more violent in this series than in others, he still refrains from killing. That was mostly apparent in his first interactions with Jigen because the difference between how they dealt with enemies was glaring. (Don't take my word for it but I don't think he's killed anyone in that series, which is a whole lot better than any other Lupin save maybe for Cagliostro and Fuma.) So he takes off the kiddy gloves but he won't stoop as low as murder. And he still deals with the bad guys with his usual cartoon giddiness, which I find awesome <3 Even despite the darkness of the environment and situations, Lupin manages to stay a relatively "good" guy.

That is one of my favorite HCs for Looker tbh: The justice-loving Interpol Detective that eats the crimes has ancestry in Interpol's most wanted-- The great thief that got away and was never brought down by Interpol itself.
It was such a shameful failure that Interpol completely "forgot" Lady Lyken existed. Thus, a loooong time later, her descendant Looker came into his own and became one of Interpol's most prized agents, and everyone is none the wiser.
Even without Looker's amnesia or foggy memory of his pre-faller life that he may or may not recall, he would have never known about his bloodline. Lyken wiped her identity off the face of the Earth. By all purposes, she was dead, and classified as such by a very bitter Interpol.
She lives through Looker however.
Looker might be almost cartoonishly tied to justice, but he's got a thievish upbringing. My headcanon real name for him "Robert" is a pun on the Robusta coffee tree AND... Robber. He used to pickpocket/steal when he was younger until he learned how much it broke his mother's heart, albeit everything he stole was to feed himself and his poor mother. This ability to sneak off with items and disappear into a crowd is still useful for him however. Along with that, his ability to perfectly disguise himself is taking a page straight out of Lupin III (... or Zenigata, him too)
"But Vergo, Looker is so dumb in the games I played!!" off screen he's awesome Uncle Nintendo told me

okay awesome because I've come up with like an entire Part's worth of stories for Lupin III in the Ace Attorney universe so I'll just share one of the silliest:
A car chase between the Lupgang and Zeniyata leads them into a field full of crops, and Lupin fires a shot that damages Pops' car to the point it catches fire. The gang stop and pull the dazed Zenigata and Yata out of the car, using breathers so they don't suffer smoke inhalation, but then discover that the crop that's now burning? and was surrounding the car?
it was weed
Lupin, Jigen and Goemon now have two very stoned cops on their hands
needless to say, hijinks ensue

HAPPY 5/5 DAY YALL(I know it’s like a day late but hey I’m sortave made it in time!! Select your player from:
🌹a splendid darling🌹
🧰a trusty hard maintenance worker ⚙️
🔎 a quiet timid detective🔍
RAMBLING UNDER CUT CAUSE IT GETS LONG LOL:
Hands yall the pencil sketch I did of James first, would probably inked it but I’m still proud of it (Shane and Rusty I did on the same page so they’re smushed together and it’s messy ahah)
Tumblr media
James gave me the most difficulty cause I knew I wanted to be make him Latino(Filipino/Spaniard to be exact) so I searched up bull fighting clothing and I gave him the gilet-vest underneath his big coat of his cause he’s copying Gordon (to the point of absolutely antagonizing, blaming and arguing with Alfred for everything he has done though to be fair he did traumatize Thomas kidnap his sister figure Nia and almost broke Gordon but like the Rusty scenario that’s another can of worms to get to later) but also cause I’m on the whole him idolizing and copying him around bandwagon so things like similar coat patterns, his keychains, jabot/cravat,epaulettes,beret-like hat etc) and of course I had to make him eye-catching like he wasn’t you attention so lot of gold accents and of course roses (get it cause with his surname) with him having one on his coat and on his cuff pins and rings 🌹 for symbolism
Rusty was actually the easiest cause I already had a design for them cause I already wanted them to wear a tool belt and hardhat for their job , overalls and the protection knee pads I actually got from glowynviator on Twitter, same goes with having those (forgive I don’t know exactly what to call them) circles that appear to release smoke from their radiator as little silver buttons on their collars and pockets for their jackets and I changed the color scheme to for both the tv and rws versions. They’re pretty much unwillingly involved with the supernatural shenanigans (though then again a lot of folks are here but considering when they first got here, they legit witnessed their coworker get nearly crushed to death, the treatment of Duncan, the Sudrian verison of Bigfoot, a possible immortal fallen king 👑 fogman and of course the Boulder, they can’t seem catch a break)
Shane Dooiney I was completely inspired by gloynviator by Twitter humanizations of the Culdee Fell Railway (seriously y’all go check them out they’re awesome and amazing and just incredible 💕💞) but with some minor changes like more detective-esque, think Looker from Pokemon or Inspector Gadget/Zenigata cause I love them so much but also a chunk of their personality is from Crona cause I love the hairstyle . Their personality I based it off of The Trainz Adventures, he’s said to be shy cause of people constantly mock their name which leads to him keeping to himself but ain’t afraid to help others, LeatherBootlace and StarSearch1927 on Deviantart (where he feels out of place for being away for so long, suffers from Middle Child syndrome/the Black Sheep of the Railwa due to being away fro overhauled a majority of the time during important events of the series so they feel out of the loop, the latter being the main inspiration for the ““private investigator” persona they have since he has a eagle eye for everything and thinks of crime solving and a love for mysteries while former used he/they pronouns for Shane and we need more he/thems here ✨) of course the top hat 🎩 is their funnel.

I saw the Lupin recolors you did (they’re amazing btw) and I’m curious how do you keep lineart so clean on your recolors? I’ve been doing some recolors recently but my technique is usually either trace the lines on top of whatever color I’m changing to which results in slightly-sloppy and inaccurate lines or I spend a million years doing masking. But yours look so clean it’s awesome! How do you do it?
Hello, anon- thank you for the kind words and for sending an ask in!!
The screenshots anon is referring to are in this post!
Sorry it took me a while to get back to you-- I wanted to make some example images to go along with this since this is a question I've gotten quite a few times. I'll try my best to answer as concisely I can!
I personally use Clip Studio Paint (which is what I'll be using to explain this), but I've also done this with Photoshop. I'm hoping this method is simple enough so that its usable for whatever program you (or whoever else sees this guide) uses.
We'll see how it goes ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Some bits to start:
I know this is kind of a no-brainer, but a big thing that always helps is image quality. The better the image quality, the less obvious your changes will be-- so make sure the screenshot you're recoloring has good resolution. This method (in theory) should work for lower res stuff too, but it'll be harder to avoid messy lines no matter how careful you are when selecting. Here's the images I'll be using for this example:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Make sure to have a backup of the original screenshot you're editing!! Even though I didn't include this in these upcoming examples, have the original below the image you're editing so you can check your progress and make sure you didn't miss any changes you wanted to make in your edit.
We'll use this pt. 4 screenshot of Lupin as our first example!
Let's say we want to make his jacket red-- it's as easy as it sounds, but it'll still take a bit of time.
Tumblr media
I use selection tools over masking-- primarily the polyline tool. Even after testing with masking and layer overlays, this is the best way I've found to keep line integrity and cleanliness.
When you select with the tool, you'll want to go along the edge of the actual color you want to change, not the linework.
Tumblr media
It's going to be time-consuming (which is why I only outlined his sleeve lol) but from all the testing I've done, it's what gives the nicest results. Plus we don't even have to use any layers or masks-- we can just change the color of the screenshot directly!
To do that, we'll want to find the option to change hue, saturation, and luminosity.
Tumblr media
From here we can tweak the colors in whatever way we want without any of that ugly crunchy outline stuff or having to fiddle with a dozen different layer settings.
Tumblr media
This way of doing it is really good for changing the hue, saturation, and darkness to whatever we want it to be without sacrificing line quality.
Here's the final:
Tumblr media
Even though I eyeballed the color for example's sake, the final change doesn't look half bad!
The only catch I've come across is when you need to make something a lighter color. You can bring the luminosity of an image down, but once you bring it up you start having some unavoidable issues.
We'll use one of my favorite Zenigata screenshots for our second example.
Let's say we wanna change his red pt. 4 trench coat to his green one from pt. 3 (again, only changing the sleeve for time's sake).
Tumblr media
This is a tough change since there are a lot of lines and extra details on his coat that get caught and lightened in the change.
Tumblr media
At this point we're going to have to do some line tracing.
Yeah, I'm not a fan of this part either, but unfortunately it's another time-consuming necessity if we want an edit to look as unedited as possible. Every other method I've tried to keep the lines dark ends up really corrupting the linework already in the image.
Tumblr media
I'm sure you've noticed the edge of the selection we made in this; even though I skipped this part for time's sake you're going to want to go over those outer lines, too.
I recommend using a simple default brush set to a size that is as close to the actual linework as you can get. If the brush you're using doesn't have tapering or line size pressure just make sure it's slightly smaller than the actual lines. Stabilization isn't exactly a requirement; I'd only suggest turning on line stabilization if you aren't very confident with your linework (practice makes perfect and all that).
When we're done, it'll be pretty obvious that we went over the lines-- there's another really simple fix I found that helps to make this a little less obvious.
Tumblr media
Messing with the layer opacity and the blur filter helps to bring out the linework beneath what you've gone over and makes the lines look less obviously drawn in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm sure you could also tweak the layer's settings until you find something that looks right, too-- it'll be the same sorta "experimenting until it looks right" deal as with changing the colors earlier.
I generally stick within the 2.5/3.5 range when blurring for decent res screenshots. In hindsight I probably went a little too low with the blur for this one, but you get the idea.
Tumblr media
I think that it mimics the semi-blurry quality that lines tend to have in screenshots and helps to make it look less like it was drawn over.
Here's the final:
Tumblr media
I'm sure if I bothered to do the entire trench coat it wouldn't look half bad, lol.
ANYWAYS that's a crash course on how I make lines not look like doodoo in my edits :3
Hopefully this is helpful!!
Thanks again for the ask, and if you have any more q's don't be afraid to send another ask in!🫡

Need a late-night gap filler, forgot the ol queue ran out. So how about another currently watching? Finally got around to finishing something on my watch list for ages. Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine. I loved the old Lupin episodes they’d play on Adult Swim. It was one of my first forays into vintage anime and some top episodes like Shot Through the Heart stick with me to this day. So if Nami is my favorite Straw Hat pirate...how do you think I’d feel about the bold choice to shift part 4 of this iconic series to it’s equally iconic lady thief?
I’m so sad this wasn’t like, my sixth rewatch. Why did I take so long? 2012 was not a time I was super into anime I guess but still...this was awesome. Going all artsy and for more of a Film Noir vibe, making it a prequel showing how the gang got together. I about woke the neighbors when I saw Goemon cut the plane like in the old opening! It’s also batshit insane and hornier than Lupin III typically is. Which is neato mosquito. I also love these takes on Lupin, Jigen, & Goemon but damn did Zenigata get so much mileage out of a little twink lieutenant.
This was a cool outing, and I know I’ll end up rewatching this one time and again.
