Black actor who faced abuse over role in Romeo & Juliet calls for industry-wide action
Francesca Amewudah-Rivers, who played Juliet alongside Tom Hollandâs Romeo, says racist abuse went on for months
The actor Francesca Amewudah-Rivers, who received a barrage of online racial abuse after being cast in a production of Romeo & Juliet this year, has called for industry-wide action to protect black and brown actors.
The abuse aimed at Amewudah-Rivers began after the Jamie Lloyd Company theatre group announced the cast of its production in April, with Amewudah-Rivers to play Juliet and the Spider-Man star Tom Holland playing Romeo.
Amewudah-Rivers has revealed she also received hate mail, and that she did not feel safe while working on the play, her West End stage debut, at the Duke of Yorkâs theatre.
âThere were many days where I didnât know how I was going to get through it,â she told the Stage. âThe flurry of abuse was sustained throughout the whole job. I received death threats, hate mail sent to the theatre. I didnât feel safe at work.â
âToo much to bearâ: Black actors condemn racial abuse of Romeo & Juliet starRead more
The 26-year-old, who was nominated at this yearâs Black British theatre awards, said the minimal set and closeup camerawork of the production made her feel âvery exposedâ on stage. âOff the back of the abuse, having to stare down the camera lens and have my face be blown up in this theatre was really tough mentally,â she said.
Amewudah-Rivers said the harassment also affected her family and friends, as well as the showâs cast, crew and producers at the Jamie Lloyd Company, who condemned the initial abuse in a statement on social media at the time and said further harassment would be reported.
The incident led to an open letter of solidarity with Amewudah-Rivers being signed by more than 800 predominantly black female and non-binary actors â including Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Lolly Adefope, Freema Agyeman, Wunmi Mosaku and Tamara Lawrance.
Amewudah-Rivers described her experience as an âincredibly toughâ induction into the West End. She said: âI know what it means to move through life in a black body. Racism is something we have to navigate every day, so I was very aware of the potential for something like this to happen.
âI think what I was unprepared for was how long it went on for, and also having to navigate it while doing the job. It was four months of battling against this energy, and itâs something I still have to deal with. I really had to reckon whether it was worth it, this sustained feeling of duress.â
The actor called for âbroader conversations industry-wideâ about the protection of global-majority actors and said it was ânot enough to represent our communities on stage, there also needs to be an infrastructure of supportâ.
âSafety has to be at the forefront. We canât do our best work if we donât feel safe, if we donât feel held, if we donât feel understood,â she said. âI think more needs to be done, especially because I know Iâm not alone. I know other actors who have had similar experiences, more recently, too.â
According to Amewudah-Rivers, the response to her casting showed how the UK theatre sector was still lagging behind in terms of onstage racial diversity.
âFor it to cause such outrage that I was cast in this role means we have a long way to go. Theatre has a legacy of community, it should represent society. Especially in London â thereâs a big black British community here and in the UK. It shouldnât be a surprise. Our histories as black people have been erased. Itâs about re-education. Iâm not the first black Juliet, and I wonât be the last.â

== Love Notes ==
Hey there Lovelies! Holy Moly! What a week it's been, and it's only Tuesday!! I cannot tell you how nice it is to see so many folks so excited! It's like we got an injection of pure dopamine from all the news, and I'm so happy it's helping everyone feel a little levity!
And you know what?
You deserve a break!
You deserve to feel happy!
It's been a lot lately, and some people might try to shame you for being happy about something while there's so much not so happy going on in the world, but please oh please remember, that you deserve to have happiness too.
Even if it's just a little here or there, or bounds of happiness -- you deserve a break from all the things you have to deal with every day. You deserve a chance to smile, and to laugh, and to enjoy this crazy life we live, and bask in the warm sun, or the cold wind.
You do not need to feel bad for enjoying yourself once in a while. No matter what it is-- even if its unrelated to the fandom, or anything that's happened the last couple days, please go out today or tomorrow and enjoy something.
Do you like tea? Drink a cup of your favorite tea!
Do you like going for walks? Get on out there and move those legs!
Do you like animals? Find a random neighborhood cat (not a wild one) and give it some much needed pets if it's friendly!
Do something that brings YOU joy, not anyone else. Take a moment to savor that feeling, hold it deep down in your chest where you can feel your breath coming in and out, and remember that you deserve to feel that joy, and you don't have to do anything different, or be any different to deserve it. đ Sending so many good vibes lovelies-- may your day be filled with excitement and wonder, or calm and love, whatever it is that will brings you joy. đ

Hereâs to some real-life New Directions! In one of the earliest awards handed out in the 76th Tony Awards telecast on CBS and Paramount+, history was made as Alex Newell became the first-ever openly non-binary actor to win a Tony award, in the Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical category, for their showstopping role as cornpone character Lulu in the musical comedy âShucked.â
Then, in the showâs final hour, that record was upheld by nonbinary actor J. Harrison Ghee, who won the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical in the Marc Shaiman/Scott Wittman tuner âSome Like it Hotâ, based on Billy Wilderâs classic 1950s comedy. Ghee, late of musicals such as âKinky Bootsâ and âMrs. Doubtfireâ, was a favorite for their bold reimagining of the Jerry/Daphne role made famous by Jack Lemmon in the original film."

'Doctor Who star and unflinching LGBTQ+ ally David Tennant will be hosting the 2024 BAFTAs, and heâll undoubtedly bring his âwarmth, charm and mischievous witâ to the British film awards.
The actor â known for his amazing work on Good Omens, Broadchurch, Jessica Jones and Final Space â will take centre stage at Londonâs Royal Festival Hall for the ceremony on 18 February.
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts film awards, commonly known as the BAFTAs, have been hosted by a variety of presenters over the years, including Rebel Wilson, Richard E Grant and Graham Norton.
Tennant said he was âdelightedâ to have been asked to host the BAFTAs and âhelp celebrate the very best of this yearâs films and the many brilliant people who help bring them to lifeâ.
BAFTA chief executive Jane Millichip said the organisation was âover the moonâ that Tennant would be hosting the prestigious event, promising itâll be a âmust-watch showâ.
âHe is deservedly beloved by British and international audiences alike,â Millichip said. âHis warmth, charm and mischievous wit will make it a must-watch show.â
Tennant is, of course, renowned worldwide for his immense acting talents, winning several TV Choice Awards, BAFTAs and an Emmy over his storied career. Heâs also a stalwart LGBTQ+ and trans ally.
The Doctor Who legend has worn t-shirts that proudly declared his support for trans kids, included trans and non-binary pin badges in his wardrobe during public appearances and proudly stood up in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. Heâs just been an all-round amazing supporter.
The nominations for the 77th annual awards will be announced on 18 January by Naomi Ackie, who played Whitney Houston in the biopic film I Wanna Dance With Somebody, and Barbie actor Kingsley Ben-Adir.
David Tennant will kick off the 2024 BAFTAs ceremony on Sunday 18 February, and the awards will be broadcast on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.'

Tony Award Thoughts
Brandon Uranowitz coming out of the gate swinging and making me cry with the first speech
& Juliet performance was not giving. i actually like the show but that's my least favourite song it in and i thought it was a weird choice
(The most iconic song they could have done would have been I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman and make the Tony's feel bad for not nominating Justin David Sullivan)
Michael Arden best speech hands down. Obsessed with him what a well deserved win (after being robbed for best direction for spring awakening AND once on this island)
(ok tbh I thought he won for once on this island until i googled it rn??? I guess i got it confused with it winning best revival)
Sweeney, Some Like it Hot and Shucked had the best performances tbh, good vibes and actually showed what the show was about
was SO stressed about best leading actor and was hoping Josh Groban could get his revenge but J. Harrison Ghee rightfully won it!
(people who are still mad about the 2017 Tony's I am here for you)
Also Alex Newell deserved it after being robbed for once on this island as well
Obsessed that we had two non-binary performers win but maybe can we talk about how we should fix the gendered categories??? Especially w/ Justin not being nominated
Also can we talk about best score and choreography not being shown??? what's up with that
"it's good for Lea Michelle that she's presented a Tony that year where there's no script" - what I sent to my friend during the show
tbh i have barely heard of Kimberly Akimbo but maybe I'll check it out? The song they did seems fun
I cannot explain the amount of rage that filled my body when Funny Girl did their performance.... Lea Michelle I am out to get you. Beanie Feldstein if you need someone to fight for you, you can count on me
anyways time to go into hibernation for another year (jk im seeing the Hadestown tour in like two months)

Suffs
Suffs (2024, The Music Box Theatre): I donât know if the comparisons to Hamilton that have thrown around in reviews have done the show any favors. Itâs an easy comparison to make:
-award-winning musicals that transitioned from off-Broadway to Broadway runs
-helmed by a singular vision
-inspired by a book that the creator read about a moment in American history
-where characters are played by actors who look and speak differently than their historical counterparts.
Obviously, these two works must be paired in conversation. And since the 1776 revival flopped on Broadway after trying some of the same casting tactics as Hamilton (casting all female, transgender, and non-binary actors as the American Founding Fathers), it fell on Suffs, at least to the public, critics, and producers, to prove that Hamilton wasnât a singular event and that you could make a commercially and critically successful musical based on American history with ahistorical casting. (As I said, the comparison is superficial.) (Furthering the narrative, Phillipa Soo was original cast in Hamilton and in the off-Broadway cast in Suffs.)
Digging below the surface, one can see similar bones upholding Hamilton and Suffs inherited from ancestors like Les Miserables. The story is mostly focused on the brash Alice Paul/Alexander Hamilton, who is contrasted against her more conservative colleague, Carrie Chapman Catt/Aaron Burr. Paul is buoyed by her three friends: Doris Stevens, Inez Milholland, and Ruza Wenclawska/John Laurens, Hercules Mulligan, and the Marquis de Lafayette. Their uphill struggle to gain women the vote is opposed by the tyrannical President Woodrow Wilson/King George III, who has a signature solo in each act. Paul and her colleagues encourage each other to finish the fight/not throw away their shot, and the musical is as much an exhortation to the present and future as much as it is a walk through the past.
And yes, we thus have the setup for easy, smirking barbs about how the one credited to a man about a manâs story is one of the most successful, critically acclaimed musicals in history while the one credited to a woman about women just won two Tony Awards and wonât see any productions in other cities, much less other countries, any time soon.
Beyond that jab, however, is the follow-up uppercut that Hamilton is just a better musical than Suffs. Many actors are making their Broadway debut in Suffs, and you can feel the rawness in the simple choreography (likely affected by the period-appropriate costuming). The play launches jarringly with the ensemble number âLet Mother Vote;â there wasnât even a reminder to the audience to silence their cell phones to prime the audience, and so of course a phone rang in the second act. The pace fails to give the audience a moment to cheer for the first Woodrow Wilson solo, âLadies;â instead, the scene transitions right into âA Meeting With President Wilson.â
If we fall into the compare and contrast game, then one might hold Suffs wanting in its lack of songs that stick and work outside of its context; there are no displays of verbal gymnastics like âSatisfiedâ or âWhatâd I Miss.â I struggle to hum a melody from Suffs the morning after; I would say that itâs surprising that Suffs won the Tony Award for Best Original Score, but that is also dictated by the level of competition this year.
Thatâs not to say Suffs is a bad musical; the house was packed for the performance I attended, and I was moved by the story and songs. The American suffrage movement presents fewer moments of bombast compared to the American Revolution and the countryâs founding; thereâs no Battle of Yorktown to provide a first act closing number. Instead, we have a great and fiery number in the second act focused on the Silent Sentinels, who protest Wilsonâs unwillingness to publicly support suffrage and decision to incarcerate Paul, Smith, Burns, and Wenclawska at Occoquan Workhouse.
The cast is strong across the board; standouts were Hannah Cruz, who embodies Inez Milhollandâs magnetic personality; Jenn Colella, who gives needed nuance to Carrie Chapman Catt, Grace McLean, who delights in chauvinism and convenient ignorance; Emily Skinner, who lights up the stage as socialite Alva Belmont; and Lucy Bonino who lends a quiet strength and anchor to the show as Paulâs closest friend, Lucy Burns.
And then there is Nikki M. James, who is incredible as Ida B. Wells. Wells is the focal point of Suffsâ departure from comparisons with Hamilton, as how the show directly challenges how the suffrage movement justified compromises to placate southern members at the cost of Black activists seems to be in conversation with how Hamilton tried to make the slave-owning George Washington an abolitionist in âYorktown (The World Turned Upside Down)â by having him answer Laurensâs question:
Laurens: Black and white soldiers wonder alike if this really means freedom
Washington: Not. Yet.
Though Paul is Suffsâs protagonist, Suffs also shows how Paulâs story intersects with Wellsâs. The play sides with Wells when she directly criticizes Paul and friends for asking Black activists to wait their turn on racial justice without resolving their hypocrisy. The suffragists who demand that the men who control their political and economic lives stop deferring to hear their call for suffrage because tariffs, war, and campaigning for re-election take priority then tell the Black activists that actually enforcing Black menâs suffrage and stopping lynchings must wait until womenâs suffrage has been won. However, Suffs has a refrain on this as well: itâs important to remember who the actual enemy is and not to succumb to these divisions that only benefit conservative forces that want to preserve the status quo.
The play mostly handles these transitions in focus with deftness, and James is able to balance steely resolution, doubt, righteous indignation, sorrow at the future, and hope for the best in her limited time on stage. The play would be greatly diminished if Jamesâ Wells, Anastacia McCleskeyâs Mary Church Terrell, and Laila Erica Drewâs Phyllis Terrell had been excised so the focus could be solely on Paulâs story.
Similarly, the play reminds us of how little we know and see about the larger story of the suffrage movement and intersectional need for change by dropping a last moment revelation that Catt was queer and romantically involved with Molly Hay. It might seem like a random point to include in âIf We Were Married (reprise),â but it reinforces the point that suffrage is just one direction of necessary change and that our focus on Paul limits what we know about the other activistsâ motivations and struggles.
Given the high cost of Broadway tickets (our seats were in the theaterâs penultimate upper tier row, and they were still more than $100), we have to be very selective in what we see. Recommendations from Helen Shaw of New York magazine havenât steered us wrong yet, and weâre glad that we saw Suffs on her advice. If nothing else, itâs led me to teaching myself about the suffrage movement, since my formal schooling was woefully inadequate on this subject.

Aristotle: I donât mind ďżźďżź
Jackson: ok to the computer lab!
Zachary: Jackson we are already here
Jackson: oh
They enter the computer lab and go to a computer in the back of the room and Zachary sits down in the chair
Zachary: can you hear me Charlie? There is someone we want you to met
Charlie:* wakes up* initiating greeting protocol 47: hello Zachary and Jackson who do you want to introduce me to?
Aristotle: hi Iâm Aristotle polonoi
Charlie: are you the child of the famous actor dýo polonoi? Who played in many award-winning movies? And a model?
Aristotle: yes thatâs me
Charlie: why arenât you wearing your mask?
Aristotle: I canât wear it to school because I will get in trouble
Charlie: makes sense
Zachary pov
I almost forgot that they had a mask. The first time I saw them now that Iâm getting a better look at them I see that they have a nose ring on the side and they have some eyeshadow and eyeliner and they have long gold earrings high cheek bones and since I am standing next to them they are about a foot taller than me how the f**k is somebody straight out of my dreams exactly my type?! I mean I expected some things being different but they are perfect just perfect
Charlie: Zachary!
Zachary: what?!
Charlie: are you ok? You were staring at Aristotle for like 8 minutes
Zachary: yes iâm fine.
Aristotle: where else are you going to show me?
Jackson: the roof but itâs nothing special though so we can just say here
Aristotle: ok
A half hour later lunch ends Zachary and Aristotle head to science class
Aristotle: so what are we doing?
Zachary: looks like we are cutting open a frog
Aristotle: oh that seems fun
Zachary: what do you mean fun?! thatâs gross!
Aristotle: donât worry I have done this before
Zachary: what?
Aristotle: nothing hand me the scalpel
Zachary pov
I watched Aristotle operate on the frog and I was pretty impressed they knew what they were doing even though they mentioned that t were homeschooled and Iâm scared to ask how they learned this but then I went to the bathroom and somehow they brought the damn frog back to life!
Zachary: how the f**k did you do that?!
Aristotle: itâs simple I just rewired the veins, the brain and sewed it back together
Zachary: hmm hot
Aristotle: What?
Zachary: nothing
A few hours later the school day ends
Zachary: hay Aristotle! I was wondering if I could your number? So we can hang out sometime.
Aristotle: yea I would love to!
Aristotle and Zachary exchange numbers and Aristotle walks all the way home
Florence: welcome home
Aristotle: hello father
Florence: how was school?
Aristotle: it was good I made some friends
Florence: really already? What are their names?
Aristotle: Jackson, Charlie and Zachary ďżź
Florence: thatâs great iâm glad youâre making friends oh by the way your grandparents and extended family, and your father side of the family are coming over in two months ďżźďżź
Aristotle: why?
Florence: because itâs been decades since we seen them and you and your sister havenât gotten a chance to meet them yet
Aristotle: ok father
A few hours later Aristotle is reading and gets a call from Zachary
Aristotle:* answers* yes?
Zachary: so I was wondering if you wanted to go to somewhere with me this weekend
Charlie:* in the distance over the phone* I SAID INVITE THEM TO THE PARK DUMB A$$!!!
Zachary: calm down, Charlie I will!! Sorry I meant the park this week or next weekend
Aristotle:* laughs* I would love to I donât have anything to do this weekend
Zachary: good itâs a date!* hangs up*
Aristotle: a date?

Women Talking
For a VaRiEtY of reasons last week I went down some rabbit holes around this movie + the principals involved.
Navigating this experience illuminated how I want to stretch + grow in terms of exercising leadership, no matter my role within a group or community. I stand in wonder learning a bit about how DeDe Gardner, Sarah Polley + Frances McDormand collaborate. Their vision of how movies can create conversations to help shift important social dynamics INSPIRES ME.
If you are similarly interested, here's some links you might enjoy.
update 3/12/23 8:00pm SARAH POLLEY JUST WON THE ACADEMY AWARD FOR BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY!!! Watch her JoYfuLLy run up to give her iNsiGhTfuL acceptance speech here.
Back in Sept2022 at TIFF2022 (25 min) this L o V e L y small group convo happened. Among other bits, LOVED moderator Sonia Lawrence's summary statement that what she takes from the film into her life is not the community's lack of judgment, but their presence of care.
Here's Frances at MVFF (54 min) - where she read some bits from Sarah Polley's brave book Run Towards The Danger; spoke about the magnificient collaboration between Polley (screenwriter + director), producer Dede Gardner + herself; and described the impact of Polley's way of exercising leadership on others. Watching this video is the first time I've seriously considered using the descriptor 'matriarchal leadership style.' Loved this bit (which is mostly a direct quote), "Movies are not answers, but they are propaganda + conversation starters... we're actively screening at colleges + universities... using the moving to talk about the future, not about the horrible present, but the future + try to radicalise the conversation more. "
Claire Foy in a convo moderated by Kate Erbland (28 min) - about how Foy landed as Salome, what it was like to work with Polley as a director, and more. At 14:05 min there's a sweet bit about the experience of acting with Ben Whishaw + his role in the movie.
NYFF60 (19 min) - Eugene Hernandez does an admirable job getting each person to reflect on the movie within this relatively short panel conversation.
In February Polley + Ben, and then Buckley + Foy were on London Live (9:25 min). L O V E D how about 3/4 of the way through Buckley gently pushes back on interviewer's assumption that the women character's lives were foreign to the actors playing them. They're not, she said, not at all. What WAS foreign + welcome was the ability for a group of women to have an extended conversation about a complex issue and then to make a decision which will have an impact on the rest of their lives. D A M N, if that isn't sobering!
I didn't know August Winter before watching these interviews, so found this Autostraddle interview w/cast member August Winter about the movie + navigating the industry as a non-binary actor + this video. I appreciate hearing from them directly about their character Melvin who is a trans man + learning why silence is such a significant part of their character's behaviour.
Lastly, reading some of Polley's IG posts reminds me that the people I admire most know their worth, yet a l w a y s shine a light on those around them. After listening + watching Polley today, I am even.more.encouraged to do the same. Currently the latter is easier than the former. #work in progress

Bella Ramsey is one of a number of actors who have been thriving after first coming to mass attention in Game of Thrones.
She finds her prominence from GoT and The Last of Us to be "bizarre".
Ramsey, 20, who identifies as non-binary and uses any pronouns, spoke with ET from the carpet of the Gotham Awards where she represented the team behind the show. "It's pretty weird, actually," Ramsey said. "It was just like the best year of my life making this show with basically a group of people who became my friends." In July, Ramsey was nominated for an Emmy for Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her portrayal of Ellie in the HBO show. "I just find it very bizarre," Ramsey continued, adding that it's been hard for her to deal with the increased stardom. The Game of Thrones alum went on to also share that while a set is where she "thrives," she is getting accustomed to her new lot which includes attending award shows and daily interactions with fans who recognize her. "I go outside and I get recognized like every time I go out now," she said. "It's kind of strange but I don't think about it until it happens. I wouldn't say I like it -- it's not awful. People are nice." [ ... ] The beloved star said The Last of Us season 1 was "the best year of my life," saying she's been most appreciative of the fans who have supported her character's LGBTQ identity (Ramsey herself identifies as non-binary, and uses any pronouns).Â
Bella has a refreshing matter-of-fact attitude.

Possible Cast Members for âKnives Out 3â?
Rian Johnson has done it again with Glass Onion, an excellent follow-up to the raucously enjoyable Knives Out. The consistency in the writing and the way both films award repeat viewings make them great comfort watches, and Daniel Craig seems to be having a wonderful time playing the over-the-top Southern drawling, eagle eyed dandy Benoit Blanc.Â
The success of the series so far has been not just the clever writing, but the casting, as each film utilises an ensemble of tremendous character actors who enjoy being outlandish and ridiculous. Unsurprisingly, Twitter quickly began asking who fans would love to see in the cast, and it prompted me to consider my own ideas. It wonât shock many to hear I quickly thought of many, but below are some of my ideas. The good thing is that Benoit Blanc has the potential to be the Columbo of feature films, appearing every few years in an ongoing franchise, so even if these donât all appear in the third movie, there could always be the next one...
Brendan Fraser is currently in the midst of a career renaissance due to his performance in The Whale, where he has become a front runner for Best Actor prizes in his heartbreaking portrayal. But this kind hearted, beloved man first came to prominence with his self-deprecating manner in fan favourite cult classics such as George of the Jungle and one I particularly love, The Mummy. Heâs shown his ability to balance comedy with pathos, so heâd be perfectly suited in this world.
Jon Hamm is man who looks like he is chiselled out of perfection, and yet surprised many with his comedic timing in 30 Rock and the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Hamm could work perfectly as the murder victim in a Benoit Blanc movie, his magnetism allowing him to be depicted positively before flashbacks reveal a darker edge, akin to his more dramatic roles.
Stephanie Hsu was the surprise break out from Everything Everywhere All At Once, demonstrating surprising pathos in her support role and impressively holding her own against Michelle Yeoh. A trope in the previous two movies of the series has been Blancâs double act with a young female, firstly the Cuban-Spanish Ana De Armas, and then the non-binary African-American Janelle Monae, so it wouldnât be surprising if they continue that method. Hsu could have a brilliant double act with Craig, so I think sheâd be fantastic.
Hugh Jackman is handsome, can sing, is funny, an amazing dramatic actor, and reputedly one of the nicest human beings in Hollywood. Renowned for his classic portrayals of Wolverine, one of the few action heroes to challenge James Bond, I could see him portraying one of Benoitâs best friends, inviting both Blanc and Hugh Grantâs Phillip to a Broadway event (any excuse to see Jackman, Grant and Craig singing Broadway together).
Daniel Kaluuya is mostly known for his partnership with Jordan Peele, specifically in the excellent horror films Get Out and Nope, as well as his appearances in Steve McQueenâs Widows and his award winning performance in Judas and the Black Messiah. However, an often underrated element is his dry, deadpan line reading, epitomised by his performance in Nope especially. I could see Kaluuya in a similar role to LaKeith Stanfield from Knives Out as an exasperated detective working alongside Benoit Blanc.
Lupita Nyongâo may be better known for her dramatic roles in 12 Years A Slave, Jordan Peeleâs Us, and even her role as Nakia in the Black Panther series, but itâs actually her role in the horror comedy Little Monsters that makes me think she would suit the series. Portraying a kindergarten teacher trying to protect her class from a zombie outbreak, her mix of sincere positivity and deadpan humour could make her a Toni Collette / Kathryn Hahn esque figure.
Sandra Oh finally got the lead role she deserved in her series Killing Eve, her role as Eve Polastri allowing her to demonstrate her tremendous range in comedy and drama. She mainly now features in voiceover roles, such as Turning Red or Invincible, but it would be great to see her bring her frazzled energy to a Benoit Blanc mystery.
Pedro Pascal is currently the lead in two of the biggest possible television shows, firstly playing the eponymous character in Disneyâs The Mandalorian, and recently taking on the lead role of Joel in HBOâs The Last Of Us. Although these two roles means Pedro is likely going to be fully booked for the majority of his time, a role in a Benoit Blanc ensemble seems perfectly suited for him.
Florence Pugh is probably the least likely, considering sheâs now a critical and commercial darling with upcoming roles in Dune: Part Two and ongoing performance as Yelena Belova in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, her comedic timing demonstrated in Fighting With My Family and as Yelena is an underrated element of her repertoire that deserves more attention. She would seemingly suit a similar role to Ana De Armas and Janelle Monae, but Iâd love to see that expectation get turned on its head and reveal her to be more similar to Kate Hudson in Glass Onion, the reversal of âhidden depthsâ.
Those are just some that come to mind, but Iâd love to hear others thoughts on who they would have join the Benoit Blanc Cinematic Universe?

Some minor highlights from WJW today!
Nathan's been traveling!
Both of them are going to a bunch of American Comic Cons
Kristian has been working on his book and being crafty (turned some white Nikes into Spiked, Glittery Nikes)
Kristian and Nathan will be doing a wee WJW in Raleigh with the cast if they can
Nathan will be going to a not yet announced European Comic Con sometime this year
Kristian read a few excerpts from his book
There will be an audiobook version that Kristian will voice
During OFMD S1 Kristian asked David and everyone about his accent and if he should change it and David replied with "We just want YOU Kristian"
One of the funniest days on set was Nat Faxon and the GreenScreen teeth when the Swede had Scurvy
Nathan described himself as "Nathan Underscore Foad" and now the fandom will henceforth call him this.
These were some of my favorite shots of these two:
And this is a bit of bonus features for the WJW but you'll have to watch it for context:

== Love Notes ==
Hey there lovelies! I saw so much continuous clowning today! 2-3 days in a row? It's been a while since we've had that much all at once! I'm so happy to see people feeling the love and camaraderie with each other again! I hope that continues even if we see things calm down! Something I heard in WJW today that really stuck with me was "We just want YOU Kristian", something David said when Kristian kept asking if his Belfast accent was okay for the role. How absolutely heartwarming is that? We knew that David and the rest of the cast and crew were kind and wanted everyone to be themselves, but to hear that out of the mouth of Kristian and how it affected him, in his book where he poured out his soul-- just hit so much harder. That really is one of the major values that drew me, and I know quite a few others of the crew to OFMD so hard. Acceptance and celebration of individual uniqueness is at the core of OFMD-- it's part of the building blocks that makes our show so special. Each crew member has their own skills they bring to the table, and we can feel safe when we're allowed to be our true selves around others.
OFMD exudes that kind of acceptance in droves. We can hear it in their varying accents, in the wide array of queer portrayal, in the character's love and acceptance and forgiveness of each other-- in the music, the stage decoration, and the cinematography. We each are different, and we all bring things to the table that make the fandom, or the world a better place. We may not always get along, but it is in the uniqueness of so many crew we find creativity, love, kindness, acceptance, and a place where we can feel safe and learn to be more of our true and authentic selves. Embrace your uniqueness lovelies. You are different from me, from your moots, from your favorite fan artist/writer and that's fucking beautiful. We want YOU, crew. Be YOU in everything you do. Rest up lovelies, see you tomorrow <3

Gender-Identified Award Categories And Its Effects On The LGBTQIA+ Community: Emma Corrin
Itâs the 21st century and Emma Corrin wants the award categories to reflect that.
Notably, Corrin identifies as non-binary and uses the pronouns they/them.
As such, the actor said in a BBC interview that they âhope for a futureâ where award shows are seen as normal gender-neutral categories.
Furthermore, this year, Corrin received nominations for their filmsMy PolicemanandLady Chatterleyâs Lover. But they ultimately won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Television Series for their portrayal of Princess Diana in 2021âsThe Crown.
Nonetheless, during that period, Corrin agreed to use pronouns she/her.
But as times modernize, many film and television awards are slowly moving away from gender-specific categories.
So, since 2017, the MTV Movie & TV Awards have looked at non-gender categories. Additionally, the Film Independent Spirit Awards announced in August that they would establish gender-neutral categories for their 2023 nominations.
Additionally, the change will involve a move from the previously identified male and female categories to Best Supporting Performance, Best Leading Performance, and Best Breakthrough Performance.
