Bye, Bye AVRO RJ100 !

The 29th October, Brussels Airlines said goodbye to their last AVRO RJ100. More than 500 Belgian pilots and over 1000 cabin crew started or continued their career on the AVRO RJ aircraft type. The last commercial flight was the 28th of October to Geneva, the same as the first destination of the AVRO RJ100 15 years ago. 

But, what’s so special about the AVRO fleet? Brussels Airlines was born in 2002. They started their operations with 32 AVRO aircrafts, coming from DAT the Sabena’s daughter company. Throughout the years, Brussels Airlines replaced the AVRO’s by Airbus aircrafts.

The Brussels Airlines AVRO RJ fleet performed over 605.00 flight and transported nearly 31, 5 mil passengers.  The airplane flew to 89 different airports, such as Stockholm, Copenhagen, Geneva, Marseille, and more.

The last year the AVRO flew mainly short distances. But during its first years at (SN) Brussels Airlines, they also flew to airports further away like Helsinki, Sevilla, Riga and St. Petersburg. Once a Brussels Airlines AVRO RJ flew to Moscow and once even to Istanbul (with a fuel stop).

The AVRO airplanes where loved by all their passengers. The Avro RJ regional jet family extends from 70 to over 100 seats. Inside there are rows of 5 seats, rows of two and three. The seats are very comfortable comparing to others these days, and they offer more space for your legs. That’s why the aircraft was loved by their passengers, especially business travellers. There even was one person who came from the United States to experience the last flight of the AVRO RJ100 and say goodbye.

The type of aircraft is becoming very rare in Europe. There are still some Avro’s flying in Great Brittan, Ireland, Sweden and Greece. Some of them even come from the Brussels Airlines fleet. Some of the Avro’s from Brussels Airlines get a new beginning in the United States, Canada and Africa. Others were taken apart to use parts and there is even one AVRO which is being used  for exercises for the fire fighters at Brussels Airport.

So the 28th of october was the last commercial flight. But the 29th of October, there were still 3 flight for some members of the staff and their family. The entire day was dedicated to the AVRO family. There were flight simulators for the children, there was a Bike for Africa stand, and more... All of this was in the Hangar from Brussels Airlines. You could have drink and cheat next to a A320. Also you could watch the departures and the arrivals of the last 3 flights outside. Furthermore there were some people celebrated who had an important job in the entire AVRO family. 

The very last flight of the AVRO RJ100 was very special. When they arrived there was a water salute and they immediately drove into the hangar. Everybody was waiting for the last passengers and crew members to come out of the plane. It was a very special and emotional moment. The official last crew members where Sven Peeters, Michel Leempoels, Rita Janseune and Christelle Ruelle. When everybody was out of the plane, everybody could write a note on the airplane to say goodbye.
