Let’s Talk Beauty

I love cosmetics. Love them.  Since the first pink swipe of a tiny Avon tester lipstick in kindergarten I’ve been hooked.  If a little color on your lips can actually make your eyes look brighter, it’s obviously magic and who doesn’t love magic? Does that mean that I think every woman should wear makeup? Nope. You do you.  What I’ll never understand is why women who choose not to wear makeup try to passively-aggressive shame those who do.  “Oh, I can’t be bothered with makeup, I have better things to do”  and  “I’m not insecure about my face”.. those words have actually been said to me. I have never, EVER suggested to anyone that they should wear makeup. EVER.  I’d never dream of  telling someone what to do with their face.  I admire women who walk out into the world with a freshly scrubbed face. I also admire women who push a cart through Kroger wearing a shimmer blush and pouty lip stain ( I see you, glamour puss!).  Both of those women are making themselves happy. Why should anyone else get an opinion?   You’re probably wondering what prompted this little rant.  It was Cher.  Apparently it was newsworthy to report that Cher still colors her hair.  A couple of days ago it seemed that every news outlet and magazine from Prevention to People was pushing the headline “Cher Refuses to Go Gray!”  The world is on fire and this is an issue?  She’s 75, still gorgeous, and does a lot of philanthropic work. She commented that going gray is fabulous for some women, it’s just not for her.  Why does anyone care?  In a separate interview when asked about  cosmetics she said, "It's all about having fun, I just think that people who worry about the way someone puts on their makeup should get a life." NAILED IT. We take care of our clothing and take the time to put together outfits.  We landscape and maintain our lawns.  We cut and style our hair. We decorate and clean our homes. We do all of that because we feel better when things look nice, and probably a little bit so that other people think it looks nice.  Our faces are no different.  I feel better when I put my best face forward.  For me that means a minimum of lip color and mascara.  If I’m being honest my best face involves five products - a foundation or a cc cream, blush, lip color, eye shadow, and mascara.  I normally wear subtle colors, especially on my eyes.  A neutral, earthy tone on the lid for a little depth is my go-to.  Here’s my five-minute face that makes me feel good all day.

Yep, those are my 58-year-old crinkly eye wrinkles and forehead lines.  I earned them and I own them.  I tried to do that half face shot with a product listing like the fancy beauty influencers do but I ended up with more of a Phantom of the Opera look.  That’s okay, you get the idea.   By the way, that hair color is 9NN because I feel better with a little color.  I tried living with white hair, but I didn’t like it. You know that shirt you tried on because it looked great on the mannequin, but it looked awful on you?  That’s how it felt. I had a “friend” tell me that she was disappointed that I’d colored my hair.  Looks like she’s going to be disappointed for a long, long time. I hope this blog post doesn’t read as an angry rant.  I’m giggling my way through it because it’s just so silly to care what someone else does with their face or hair.  Never once has anyone’s lipstick or lack thereof changed my day or my life.  Never once has anyone’s ability, intelligence, or worthiness been determined by mascara.   This Christmas the wonderful men in my life showered me with Sephora gift cards and I have been happily shopping in store and online. It makes me so HAPPY!  No apologies.  I’m expecting another box today and I’ll do a happy dance when I hear the UPS truck come down our street, then I’ll swipe on some new color to impress the cats.   I don’t know why I rambled on about this, it’s pointless.  Maybe just to say that we could all stop being so judgmental.  Wearing lipstick doesn’t make one shallow any more than not wearing it somehow makes one noble.  Again, it’s all just so silly.  Whether or not Cher dyes her hair simply doesn’t matter.  If she stopped coloring her hair there’s not a single problem in this world that would go away.  Can’t we worry about the big stuff like kindness and let go of the nonsense?  Let’s try that and see how it feels. Empathy and awareness are two words that have become increasingly more evident in our society.  We hear it and see it through media outlets, we read it online and in papers. It seems as though new “awareness days” are popping up all the time.  We see awareness ribbons on the backs of vehicles and are bombarded with digital awareness posts via social media outlets.  It is almost to a point of over saturation in our world, and some how doesn’t hold as much meaning or value.  The sentiment of outwardly supporting a cause is fine, however without action these items and images are just material culture.  If you fully support a cause you aren’t only displaying conspicuous compassion with the purchase of an item to benefit a cause but you are participating in fundraisers to raise money for research, or volunteering your time to these organizations, or even donating money or goods directly.  And then there are even some folks who support these causes with no need for accolades and make the donations anonymously.

Perhaps the most well-known and the springboard for other causes is that of the pink ribbon that began to raise awareness for breast cancer.  The distribution of the pink ribbons began in 1991 when the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation passed them out at a fundraising event, which is totally legit.  However, the following years see conspicuous compassion set in when companies such as Estee Lauder, Avon, Yoplait, and New Balance began using raising awareness for breast cancer as a platform to produce and market goods in pink or with pink awareness ribbon images on them with a promise of donating proceeds to the cause.  But with these promises to donate to the cause came profit and these companies are capitalizing on a disease that has been deadly for so many.  The material culture of this “pink ribbon culture” (Pacific Standard Staff, 2016) can be seen in tools, clothing, home-goods, food packaging, service vehicles, athletic gear, and more.  

So may question is this, does a company’s display of conspicuous compassion for this cause influence your purchases of goods or services? Or does it deter you from purchasing from these companies as they are profiting off of this disease?

A Description Of Lebanese Bakery Eastlakes

The Lebanese Bakery Eastlakes is a specialist bakery that has been established in Leeds since 1992. The choice of the Bakery is wide, including such traditional delights as pastries, sandwiches, and salads, as well as being able to cater for other types of food. There are many places in Leeds that provide a variety of services to cater for the needs of the public, and the Bakery provides a perfect outlet to do so.

It started out as just a small family owned business. There were two men who started it up: Samiads Ghanem and Jamal Hanafy. By chance the first location did not turn a profit, and this led to them being extremely cautious when it came to putting money into the business. They knew that the market was huge, and that it would take some time before they could make a success of it.

This led to them hiring out some equipment, and this has led to them expanding ever since. This expansion has seen them go from a tiny one to two outlets, in addition to opening up several other 'off license' branches elsewhere in the region. It is a similar story with their 'franchises', which they have taken on in the areas of Manchester, Liverpool, Stratford-upon-Avon and York. Of course, there is no legal requirement for franchises to open elsewhere within the UK, but since everything is done so locally, it makes sense that customers will gravitate towards them. The market is very large, and there is certainly room for many more stores.

The first Bakery opened in Eastlakes on the corner of Plockton Street and did very well, attracting many local residents. Then two weeks later, it closed down while renovating another part of the building. They are due to start work on a new location shortly. However, in the meantime, they have opened another 'brick and mortar' unit at Boughton Street.

This one has been open for several months, and despite the location, customers seem to love it. It is situated just off Newquay Road and is just as busy as the original, if not busier. There is also a second restaurant in the area that does a very good food, called 'The Quinceanera'.

This particular 'restaurant' serves family style Mediterranean meals, such as soups, salads, and a wide range of main dishes. It also serves some desserts, along with coffee and tea. A number of local residents work here, as do a number of international students. In fact, there is even an English class, sometimes held every Tuesday evening. There are also several events, such as the Lebanese boxing event, which takes place here from time to time.

The 'Lebanese Bakery' in Eastlakes is also home to a number of other popular small restaurants and bistros that do a reasonable amount of business, and are also great places to go when in the area. These include 'The Lemonade Lounge', 'The Lanes', 'The Lemon Cucumber Lounge', 'The Olive Tree', 'Le Bordeaux', and 'The Cheesecake Factory'. There is also a great little Lebanese place just down the street from the 'Lebanese Bakery', which also serves some good food.

This particular'restaurant' has received numerous awards, including a 'Best New Restaurant' award at the local festivals. There are two small shops inside the 'Meadowlands End' area, one that sells clothes and shoes, and the other which sells coffee and sandwiches. There is a small supermarket as well, called 'El Kebab', which has a range of Mediterranean snacks and food items, as well as bottled water. There are also a few more restaurants in this area that serve typical Lebanese fare, and some places where you can get really exotic cocktails.
