He Xuan has probably wondered if there is any universe in which he lives an uneventful human life. One with a wife and children and a place to call a home. Not just a house within a village, but an actual home filled with warmth and love. Where he can breathe without the feeling of water in his lungs or sea salt on his lips. He wishes desperately for a time where he is genuinely fulfilled.

But there is another part of himself that wants nothing more than to give up on this pipe dream. Whether he likes it or not, he has to face the fact that he cannot recall a single name from his past. He cannot remember their faces nor what they were to him. All he feels is loss. When he confronts the gods its like reciting a monologue he’s rehearsed a thousand times. He’s lonelier after he finishes his mission.

He doesn’t miss Shi Qingxuan until the third month of his absence. He doesn’t feel remorse until he remembers that his old friend will die. Even then he has trouble differentiating his mind from Ming Yi’s. He doesn’t think there is a difference anymore.

So I started watching The Untamed, I got to about 16 episodes (which I watched in 1.5X speed for some parts, no kidding ) before I quit and went to watch the donghua S1 ( which is so much better than CQL honestly) and I am reading the manhua rn. The LA is so boring, It has such a slow pacing and atrocious editing,the acting's not great either, how do people keep watching it and even claim it is the best adaptation?

Like what am I missing? I have not read the novel yet but the donghua and manhua are much more interesting than the LA, the story is so much more engaging. Also I love Wei Wuxian, he is so snarky especially in the manhua.

I have to admit that I remain perplexed by the fact people who have yet to read the novel follow this blog (or at least send me asks?), because I can’t imagine what y’all get out of the experience considering all my meta posts are so novel-specific. Is it the bitterness? The pretentiousness? I’m lost.

I’m in a horrid mood so I don’t have it in me to be diplomatic. 

I am also confused and, to be candid, stressed out by the subset of people, on tumblr or elsewhere, who praise CQL to hell and back as this sort of ‘masterpiece’. Disregarding the adaptation angle, as a stand-alone work of fiction, CQL presents so many issues that should be obvious even to a layperson who is not well-versed in the technical aspects of film-making that it gives me hives when people talk about it like it’s a 10/10 drama. So many scenes feel like they came from a student film. Personally I didn’t even think the costumes and props were great, even if it is often the one thing people praise regardless. And that’s not even mentioning the screenwriting and editing.... 

For me the acting went from a scale of Xuan Lu to Adequate to 😬🥴 but then again a lot of people are ready to bow at the altar of average performances if it comes from a pretty face. It’s like, yes, WYB did a better job that I expected him to but.... I can only imagine that the sole reason people are acting like “acting with your eyes” or using micro-expressions or not being irl like your character is groundbreaking is because he’s a pretty boy because that’s just the baseline expectations of regular, contemporary acting??????

Then, looping back the adaptation angle, I just don’t think that CQL really manages to capture the spirit of MDZS or what makes it interesting so again I am surprised to see how many people load it as the best adaptation (especially when the audio drama exist). It bleeds so much tension and conflict from the narrative and ditches the non-linear storytelling for a single flashback, doing away as well (by accident or by design or because of censorship) with so many thematic discussions and symbolism. But I guess that for some people, therein lies the appeal. 

At the end of the day I suppose a lot of it might just be explained by the fact that some people have difficulties accepting that a piece of media can be enjoyable and not really good, or that an adaptation might be more to their tastes without being a very competent adaptation of the source material. Perhaps, as well, some people are unable to talk about a show they liked without slipping into superlatives or even just unable to admit to its many shortcomings. It might, as well, for some, have to do with the type of media that they generally consume; if your tv watching diet consists mostly of commercial, middling stuff targeted at teenagers or children, a series like CQL that features a few stronger scenes might perhaps seem ground-breaking. But how would I know? I’m just a bitter grown-up who’s watched way too much tv and movies and who’s too critical for her own good.

Hc that the ghost kings have inside jokes. Like Hua Chengs is “at least i didnt wait centuries for a hobo”. Qi Rong’s is “at least my cousin loves me” and then He Xuan just has so fucking many.

They meet up for hot girl shit and argue yk. As ghost kings do. They sit in ghost city and eat and talk shit. Every now and then, Hua Cheng and Qi Rong will get into a full blown argument over something stupid(usually Xie Lian). Because Hua Cheng is the definition of a simp and Qi Rong is a Xie Lian anti. Anyways, they go at it like back and forth right and the SECOND He Xuan joins in, everything goes silent.

And they both just turn and look at him and then tear into his entire fucking SOUL. Like it’s relentless. If he wasn’t dead before then he sure is dead now. It goes a bit like.

“You’re both insufferable so can we finish eati-“

“Oh i just KNOW you aren’t talking. Say, Qi Rong, do you remember asking the fateless ocean dweller for his input?”

“…”

“No actually I don’t remember that. I don’t talk to people who fumbled millions of fucking bags AND have no bitches. Do you, Hua Cheng?”

“Fuck off-“

“No, neither do I. I mean what would we even ask for? How to ruin our lives a second time??”

“I-“

And then they both talk over him. Back and forth like;

“Oh! I got it. He must have thought have we were asking about how to win his ex back after beheading his brother, forcing him to stare at a corpse-“

“Oh don’t forget gifting the guys severed head back to his ex on her birthday-“

“-and then stalking said ex for years before going back to ocean and quite literally sleeping with fucking fishes.”

“I think he’s a fishfucker.”

“So why on Earth would we ask a fishfucking-

“bottom dwelling”

“bitchless”

“friendless”

“crossdressing.”

“fateless”

“domainless”

And the list just goes on while He Xuan sinks in his fucking chair.

i think more people should talk about Hua Cheng not being able to write.

Like I swear He Xuan made fun of him for MONTHS. He found out after asking him to help write the spooky little notes for Shi Qingxuan. Mans thought it would be fine but then Hua Cheng got wildly defensive to the point of violence and started saying “im just too tired to write. it’ll add more to your debt”

He Xuan says he’s starting to question whether Hua Cheng can even write. AS A JOKE.

And suddenly Hua Cheng has gone eerily silent.

The clowning begins. Stuff like “Does Xie Lian know you’re illiterate? No wonder you can’t just write a love letter like a normal person.”

And it’s worse when Qi Rong finds out and starts trying to write out literal propaganda in Hua Cheng’s name.

Sometimes i just post the most horribly out of character scenarios just because im bored.

Hua Cheng is a fucking simp. Qi Rong is the only one who can ever bring it up tho. Because that man has literally everything over him.

Hua Cheng calling him a cannibal and Qi Rong starts pulling up receipts of the convo when Hua Cheng asked where the hell he could find Xie Lian. Literally shaking his v new ghost like “he’s your cousin isn’t he? you can help a ghost out. you’ll be a supreme if you do”

And if he tries to bring up anything on Qi Rong it’ll just turn into a debate on who’s worse. The guy who made excrutiatingly detailed statues of a man who didnt fucking remember him or the guy that is literally the definition of a fucking flight risk.

Hua Cheng goes “I would never bring you around to meet my parents. You have a face only a mother could love.”

And Qi Rong hits him with the “My moms dead. You don’t have parents. And I would never fucking look at you willingly”

And it only devolves into “Hua Cheng, you proposed to him within a day. You are literally the reason he’s disgraced. You’re basically his fucking guard dog, and you know what that means? Xie Lian’s still a dogfucking bastard.”

Then He Xuan is joining and he’s only allowed to live because he can perfectly recite all the occasions where Hua Cheng would add a zero to his debt as if he were the fucking irs. “He added 4 zeros to my debt after Xie Lian laughed at my joke.”

“Hua Cheng is gatekeeping my cousin. I looked at him and he tried to find my ghost ashes because i was ‘unworthy’ of his precious Xie Lian’s gaze”

and then Qi Rong gets killed again but yk it was worth it.

ok so. i really enjoy the idea of white calamity(i hate his name sm i cant) interacting with the other supremes and being so embarassed by them.

Like he’s constantly seeing them do things and thinking “damn i could never”. because they’re disasters??? i don’t even need to explain???

Hua Cheng: He’s playing fnaf 1. He’s unbothered for the most part. A little stressed. He doesn’t understand what is making these robots so angry. Gege said this was a ghost game. These aren’t ghosts. These are tyrants.

Xie Lian: He laughed really hard when Bonnie jumpscared him. It was hilarious and a good effort at scaring him. It’s fnaf 2 that gets under his skin. It frustrates him.

Fu Yao: Weirdly good at fnaf 2. Like strangley good at it. He’s managing everything perfectly. The only issue is Nan Feng breathing in his ear. Murder will fix this.

Nan Feng: He’s about to lose his shit honestly. He thought it would be fun to play and it isn’t. The chicken he made fun of in the beginning has killed him at least four times now.

He Xuan: He chose sister location and he’s honestly seconds from never sleeping again. This is the best thing he’s ever seen. He’s relating to all of the animatronics. Besties in festering in hatred and spite for years until finally given the chance to get revenge and ruin everything good they ever had going for them. Mmmm good soup.

Shi Qingxuan: She cried immediately. Didn’t get past the fnaf 3 loading screen. Was in tears the moment she clicked on the game.

Qi Rong and Gu Zi: It’s a joint effort. Gu Zi is a master at this. He’s saying hes doing good so he can “protect his dad” when the time came. Hasn’t been jumpscared once. A natural born speedrunner. Qi Rong is about ready to hang himself. His kid hasn’t stopped playing since he woke up. He’s been going since fnaf 1 and they’re on ultimate custom night. He should have eaten him when he had the chance.

A TREAT:

Qi Rong and Gu Zi get to security breach and Gu Zi immediately claims rights to Gregory. Qi Rong is jealous. He’s heard Glamrock Freddy be called dad four times now. How the fuck is he coparenting with a bear? Gu Zi pointed at music man and said it looked like Qi Rong. He’s beginning to regret becoming a father.

ok but He Xuan and Hua Cheng are such an underrated duo. Guys think of the comedy and the laughs PLEASE.

I’m talking about how they adamantly refuse to call each other friends but are somehow actual besties. Hua Cheng knows everything about this man. He has so much blackmail. He Xuan owes him so much fucking money. Like… I’ve never seen a debt so large. It’s giving “hey can you buy me a drink? i’ll pay you back” and then never paying back.

They’re the friends that lowkey hate each other but also know that they have each others backs so it doesn’t matter at all.

tgcf cast on new years

Hua Cheng: He’s not worried about anything for the most part. He’s dedicated a whole part of his shrine to Xie Lian(and the party). But mostly Xie Lian. He’s even coordinated their meals and made all of Xie Lians favorites. Mostly excited for the ball drop.

Xie Lian: Acting like a damn hooligan. He’s running around making sure Hua Cheng hasn’t gone too far with the decorating. Finding the part dedicsted to him very endearing and sweet. He’s made his own desserts for everyone to try! They are significantly better than his last attempt. But still inedible.

He Xuan: Was dragged out by Shi Qingxuan. Sat in the corner and watched Qingxuan dlit around the room. He’d never admit to having fun at the party. It was fun. Even though he was carrying her home by the end of the night.

Shi Qingxuan: Life of the fucking party. She drank most of the supply. Was having the time of her life. Got Xie Lian out of his shell a bit and even got a kiss by the end of the night. Life is looking up for her.

Fu Yao: Looking very dapper. He’s been very polite all evening. Not a single fight with Nan Feng. Only ever little laughs and conversations. He brought drinks. Knowing that everyone would need them if Xie Lian was cooking anything. Offered a drink to Nan Feng personally and made fun of Hua Cheng and Xie Lian together.

Nan Feng: He’s wearing a nice suit the entire time. Making a point to not ruin the party with a pointless argument. And so what if Fu Yao is significantly less unbearable that night anyways. He’s having fun and actual conversations.

Lang Qianqiu: He came with Qi Rong and Gu Zi. Won’t admit that he and Qi Rong are involved but he did bring the sparkling cider. Made a point of keeping Qi Rong in check this time around. Did indeed have to calm the both of them down after the fireworks.

Qi Rong: He’s annoyed. $100 in the swear jar. Was forced to take a fucking shower. He’s honestly his normal annoying self but less mean. He brought cups to go with the cider. Made small talk with Xie Lian for a little bit. Did not like the fireworks at all.

Gu Zi: He made a new years resolution and brought hand made cards for everyone. Except Fu Yao. Fu Yao owes him money. Helped his dad and Xie Lian make up. Was the most enthusiastic with the party poppers and the sparklers. Did not like the fireworks at all, hid behind Qi Rong(who hid behind Lang Qianqiu)

Xie Lian coming home to see Hua Cheng and He Xuan wrestling it out on the living room floor. And he just stares and then backs out of the room while they continue to fight. He can vaguely hear Hua Cheng yell something about zeros and “disabling your fucking fish”

Hua Cheng - Nick but just because he’s like weirdly complex about his feelings and the entire relationship.

He Xuan - Ben, i don’t have to explain. it’s just self loathing from his side. wahhhh i fucked everything up wahhhhh

Qi Rong - that one homophobe. Harry. i just think he’d be the guy that is homophobic as a “joke”. like obviously he’s ok with people being gay and all that but Xie Lian makes him sick. On a serious note though, I do think it’s also Ben, Qi Rong doesn’t have the ability to just understand when people are through with him. He doesn’t have a brain to mouth filter either. from my very shallow analysis, i feel like Ben can’t take the hints he’s given. He has to be the one on top and the one with the last laugh because otherwise he’s miserable. Which is kinda like Qi Rong.

Xie Lian - Charlie. Everything is his fault always and anyone who says anything otherwise is stupid. “Hua Cheng I understand that you have free will but it’s really all my fault.” Also him with the kingdom and with anything ever. He wants and deserves good things and this is a known thing to him, but he also has to humble himself. He has to feel the sadness of everyone around him and he has to atone for the sins he and every other person have committed.

Shi Qingxuan - ok i was torn between Tara, Tori, and Elle. Tara because of the entire situation where she was constantly just being herself and somehow that was made a bad thing. like the woman form was treated like shit after people realized it isnt just an image and that’s what she prefers. then Tori because of the clear little distinction between her and the main story from what ive seen. AND THEN ELLE because oh my god the unrequited love? The knowing everything and being a voice of reason but not a single person seems to listen. The “He Xuan you’re not being robbed of anything because I offer it to you.” and being met with “but it’s not enough.”

i was gonna post a tgcf on christmas thing but was overwhelmed by the sheer bullshittery of how it would go. Nan Feng and Fu Yao have no fucking reason to be there but they still have a reputation to upkeep and refuse to ruin it. So all you hear is distant arguing while on the way to the christmas party. Xie Lian cooked because he would have cried if anyone else did. Hua Cheng is pretending to like it. He has no tastebuds whatsoever so he’s just letting everyone think he has some secret ghost pallet.

Ban Yue and Pei Xiu brought christmas presents for everyone and were completely unimpressed by the lack of energy in everyone elses gifts. It was rlly cute. He Xuan brought wine(he actually bought it) for Hua Cheng only to be met with “…your christmas present is 2 zeros off your debt.” Shi Qingxuan was just happy to be invited honestly. She brought everyone handmade fans and nearly cried when Qi Rong snapped it in her face.

Qi Rong brought nothing but himself, his kid, and a swear jar. He wasn’t supposed to show up. He wasn’t even invited. Gu Zi was invited and chose his dad and Lang Qianqiu as his plus ones. It was a trap from the start. Lang Qianqiu nearly burst into tears when he found out he was once again coparenting. It wasn’t surprising at all when Gu Zi won every prize available and then give them out as christmas giftsZ

ok guys (modern human au)He Xuan hcs but it’s literally just me projecting:

1. He Xuan is touch starved. He lashes out and acts disgusted when people touch him because he’s not used to it at all. And since he’s not used to it, he can’t determine whether it’s a good or bad feeling. So he categorizes it all as bad

2. He Xuan had trouble recognizing himself in the mirror a lot of the time. Like not the “i cant recognize myself” but he’s constantly stuck between who the person in the mirror is and who he is. Not really understnding where his reflection starts and his real self ends. He’s more worried about what the hell is in the mirror than what he actually looks like though

3. Dogshit memory. He can’t remember his actual childhood whatsoever. It’s just a vague feeling about a certain situation or person and he has no clue wwhere it comes from

4. His friendship with Shi Qingxuan is completely unhealthy. He knows it is. Not because Shi Qingxuan needs him or anything but because he needs to be friends with them or else he won’t feel normal. He doesn’t have anyone else that he feels a connection to so he forces himself to have a connection with Shi Qingxuan. And sure, he does care about them but at the same time he’s not sure how to function without them.

5. I’ve decided that he’s colorblind because I am too

6. He Xuan likes fish because they’re easy to understand. They don’t have complex emotions and behaviours that he would have to figure out and keep up with. They live their lives relatively peacefully and never stress or fear. He’s just jealous bro 🙄
