I'm a struggling fanfiction writer with a lot of ideas that don't pan out. Yeah, this. The wholock connection was heavily pushed by production (both bbc shows too), and the fact that they were both iconic british characters (sherlock holmes and the doctor! you don't get bigger than that!) didn't hurt either. They had a very british feel to them, and they were good at the "found family" dynamic (doctor and companions, sherlock and john).

Some of this matches to spn, especially found family (not that the writers pushed that aspect) but you're right that it was influenced by the MCU. Avengers had just been released and most MCU fans hadn't read the comics, so characters like Iron Man and Captain America weren't mainstream yet. The Hulk and Spiderman were much more well known in pop culture, and the Hulk was relegated to a side character in Avengers due to a mistimed and poorly made movie, while Sony had firm grasp over Spiderman. So it really felt like you went to see these individual movies - Captain America, Iron Man, Thor - that you went to see for the sake of them being movies, and then there was a massive crossover movie where they got to quip and wisecrack at each other (also touching on found family, again not that the writers ever did anything with it). It was fun and novel and people really liked it. MCU wasn't like it was now, where it's seen as one big universe - this hadn't really been done on scale, and everyone really took to it. People started throwing together fandoms and seeing what stuck.

But the thing is, to get someone interested in a crossover, your friends and audience (if you're a creator) have to have seen BOTH those things to get the joy out of it. As a fanfiction writer, I learned early on to only write crossovers for my own enjoyment, because I lost 2/3 of my regular readers who just didn't read fanfiction of the "secondary" fandom, so they wouldn't click on my stuff.

There weren't many fandoms that could compete for fan numbers. The MCU had its own crossovers (though it did show up) so it felt quite complete on its own, and Harry Potter was around as well, but it was mostly finished, and somehow felt more expansive than any of the others. It had a wide enough world setup that it didn't really need crossover material. So the natural trifecta, the three biggest fandoms that got you the biggest cross-section of fans, were Super, Who, and Lock.

1. What is your favorite book/ book series?

The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien are my absolute favorite books in the world!

2. What type of pet would you like to have & why?

I have a beautiful collie dog named Diego, and he is my precious baby boy. He’s the perfect pet for me, because he’s active, playful, but also likes to cuddle.

3. What thing are you most looking forward to as of right now?

Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, and season eight of Hawaii Five-0. Yeah, I’m pretty much 10000% fandom trash!

4. Name a fictional character to that you personally can relate to.

Danny Williams from Hawaii Five-0. I have never related harder to anyone ever lmao

5. Dad jokes or puns?

I think I personally like making puns more, but when my dad makes dad jokes, there’s nothing better!

6. What is your favorite type of weather?

I adore sunny weather, when I can go swimming and sunbathe and all that, but I also love winter weather when it’s all stormy and cold and I can huddle up under a pile of blankets a mile thick and read/watch my favorite shows late into the night. 

7. Favorite type of hot drink?(you can answer with a non-hot beverage if you don’t like hot drinks.)

Coffee and peppermint tea are the best. Although I’m not supposed to have coffee because it makes me a nervous wreck oops

8. You have been suddenly turned into a goose! What is the first thing you do?

Okay, I love this question! Personally, if I turned into a goose, I think the first thing I’d do would be to freak out royally. After I got over the shock, I’d try out my wings! Hell yeah!

9. What is your favorite element on The Periodic Table?

My favorite element is manganese (mn)! The ancient Romans and Egyptians used manganese dioxide to color glass purple, which is super cool. 

10. If you were caught in a natural disaster, what would it be and why?

Probably either an earthquake or a tsunami. I adore being by the ocean, and since I spend a lot of time on the West Coast of the USA, that means either disaster is possible!

11. What is the best item you own?

My computer. I write all my stories, watch shows, use Tumblr, make drawings, and play games on this thing; I pretty much owe my lack of Summer boredom and occasional bursts of productivity to my computer.

My main theory would be that Sherlock and Doctor Who were both made by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss back then, and they also had some actors in common. It was also the begining of Avengers and the MCU, so the idea of a crossover between Steven Moffat's characters was pretty popular and encouraged by the man himself who would happily tell stories of Sherlock and the Doctor working together. The Doctor Who medias also promoted Wholock culture as a way of engaging with the fans. John Smith, the guy behind the famous Wholock video on Youtube, got hired in the special effects team to design a spaceship, and a new opening if I don't get my facts wrong.
